HTC: Hero UI upgrade for existing phones possible

it's not possible according to an HTC representative we asked. Turns out that the same licensing terms that restricted HTC from putting its Microsoft Exchange client and other tweaks on "with Google" branded phones, like those sold by T-Mobile USA and Vodafone, prevents the company from offering the new user interface as an upgrade for those same phones.
Even if you have one of the non-Google branded devices, like the Magic sold by Rogers Wireless in Canada, an upgrade doesn't sound like a sure thing. The company is trying to figure out a way to offer it to as many customers as possible, but there are most certainly logistical issues that have to be dealt with, as well as likely R&D costs.
Of course there's always the dark underbelly of the Android world where people load "baked" ROMs on their phones that they were never intended to run, but those types of procedures certainly aren't for the lay user. For the rest of us, we'll just have to wait.
It's worth mentioning that the upcoming T-Mobile myTouch 3G that will be available this summer is a "with Google" phone.
