NTT DoCoMo Offers First X10 Multi-Touch Update

Xperia X10

One of the biggest, but certainly not the only, annoyances with the Sony Ericsson X10 was its lack of multi-touch. It was an omission so glaring that one wonders what exactly went through the designers' minds when they had it on the drawing board.

Back when the handset was first announced there was all sorts of speculation over  whether it would or would not support multi-touch, but the matter was definitively settled when Sony Ericsson themselves stepped in and announced the hardware simply would not support it. Well that turned out to not be quite as definitive as we first though since Sony Ericsson recently announced that the X10 would, after all, be getting multi-touch support, albeit in a reduced form.

NTT DoCoMo have released the update for their version of the device, making it the first in th world to offer it customers. The multi-touch support is pretty much limited to pinch and zoom so gestures like rotating maps is a no go. The multi-touch support is also not guaranteed to work in all third party apps, but something is better than nothing right?

As to when we can expect to see the update outside of Japan is anyone guess. Given how long it has taken Sony Ericsson to update the X10 in the past I wouldn't be holding my breath.
