Mozilla

There is a good reason why companies like Mozilla can give away their software for free. That is because they get a lot from search engine providers to include their search engines inside the browser. So far Google has been the default search engine in Firefox and now they have signed another three-year contract with Mozilla to keep their position at the top of the search box.

This time however, they are paying a lot more to Mozilla than they did last time, almost three times as much. Google will be paying around $300 million per year for three years, which is close to a billion dollars.

Nexus S ICS 4.0.3

The Android 4.0.3 update for the GSM/UMTS version of the Nexus S began a few days ago and by now several of them are running the latest version of Android. However, there are still many left who are not and it seems it will be a while before they get it.

Certain users are reporting that they are getting the update notification on their phones but when they begin the update process the download fails to start, after which you have no choice but to cancel the process.

When this problem was posted on Google forum, Google responded by saying that it has paused the update in certain locations and is monitoring feedback from other regions.

F9

Firefox was in a precarious position for a while because the search deal with Google was running out and that was the main source of cash for the non-profit Mozilla Foundation. Firefox fans can breathe a sigh of relief as there is a new deal that ensures Google sponsorship for another three years.

After reports that Chrome has surpassed Firefox for the second spot in the most popular browser leaderboard, it looked uncertain if Google still had interest in Firefox. It turns out it does and Google will remain the default search provider for Firefox for the foreseeable future.

Google has improved its Google+ social network, tackling circle overflow with new graphic-equalize controls over what shows up in your stream, tweaking notifications and photos, and improving how brands can control their business pages on the site.

Up to 50 administrators can now be assigned control over a Google+ brand page, rather than just one as originally allowed, with an improved notifications system that keeps all managers up to date.

As for handling circles, Google has responded to the ever-increasing number of alerts, posts and photos from those in circles with more granular control over which circles show up most often.

Google Nexus Tablet

Google will begin promoting what could be the first official Nexus tablet within the next six months, according to chairman Eric Schmidt, the latest stage in the brutal competition between it and Apple. In the next six months we plan to market a tablet of the highest quality Schmidt told Italian newspaper Corriere della Sea, while also confirming that Google plans to leverage its voice recognition technology to better challenge Apple Siri.

Schmidt was at pains to praise Apple co-founder Steve Jobs for his work in transitioning the tablet from vertical and enterprise markets to a consumer-centric product. "Steve Jobs was the Michelangelo of our time" he told the newspaper, "realized the revolutionary potential of the tablet and has created an amazing product like the iPad." However, "our companies compete" he continued, "it is capitalism."

Google

There is already a lengthy list of companies that want a piece of the search giant healthy income and we just heard there is a new addition to it.

British Telecommunications has filed a lawsuit with the Delaware US District Court, claiming that Google is infringing six of its patents with its services and the Android platform.

British Telecom is demanding triple damages for willful and deliberate infringement of its patents as well as an injunction against the violating services. The patents in question concern Google Music, Google Maps, Google Search, Google+ and even Google Offers.
