Nokia N8 is the current best phone camcorder, but it has its title seriously contested by the Optimus 2X, which ups the game at Full HD 1080p. We gave you a sample video captured with the Optimus 2X not long ago, and now we have this mini shootout to show how good it really is. And there’s even a nice surprise for you if you stick with us after the jump.

It turns out that the Optimus 2X field of view is even wider than that of the Nokia N8, which has a 28mm lens. Its rather strange that LG did not brag about it when announcing the dual-core smartphone, because a wide angle lens like that is a nice thing to have.

Now to the first part of the promised video shootout. First we have both handsets compared at their best settings 1080p for the Optimus 2X and 720p for the Nokia N8. Don’t forget to switch to fullscreen!

To make the resolution advantage of the Optimus 2X easier to see, here is a couple of 100% crops, one from each video. We have upsized the Nokia sample to make them easier to compare. We can’t say the advantage is huge, but its definitely there.

On the other hand the Nokia N8 seems to have an advantage in terms of framerate here as its videos generally look smoother than the Optimus 2X output. We should bear in mind though that the Optimus 2x is a pre-production unit and it may do better when it officially hits the shelves.

A product roadmap of the Tegra family of processors leaked today and it shows what NVIDIA holds for the near future. We are already familiar with the Tegra 2 SoC but we are yet to see how the latest LG and Motorola smartphones benefit from this raging beast inside them.

Whats more interesting though are the new processors that NVIDIA holds for the future. This leaked roadmap shows the improved dual-core Tegra 2 3D and the quad-core animal Tegra 3.

The current generation of Tegra 2 chips uses a dual-core Cortex-A9 processor, clocked at up to 1Ghz. In 2011 those will be superseded by the Tegra 2 3D chips. Those will feature the same dual-core architecture, but clocked a little bit higher at 1.2 GHz and most importantly, will have support for 3D displays. That should put the company on terms with the latest TI OMAP4 platform, which supports 3D displays and 3D cameras just as well.

In fall this year we can also expect the Tegra 3, which, according to NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang, is almost done. The quad-core Tegra 3 ticks at 1.5 Ghz and according to the roadmap has 3x the graphics performance of the Tegra 2 3D, support for Blu-ray video and video output up to 1920×1200 resolution.

FACEBOOK & TWITTER are Fully blocked in Egypt Now!!

According to a number of tips we have received in the past few minutes, the chatter on Twitter and several local reports (mostly in Arabic), it appears Egyptian authorities have moved to block Facebook.

Inspired by the recent Tunisian demonstrations against corruption, protesters are filling the streets of Cairo to demonstrate against government corruption and policies. Similar to the protests in Tunisia, the Egyptian demonstrations were partly organized on Facebook and Twitter. And yesterday, Twitter was blocked in Egypt.

If Facebook has in fact been blocked, this is not particularly surprising. Facebook itself has also been actively used to organize the demonstrations in Egypt. For instance, one Facebook Group called We Are All Khaled Said, features up-to-the-minute updates on the protests and photos from the scene. Khaled Said was "a young man brutally tortured and killed by police in Alexandria" explains Blake Hounshell on the Foreign Policy blog, and his death has become a rallying point for the demonstrations which fall on "Police Day," a national holiday in Egypt. And many of those who have been blocked on Twitter have now resorted to Facebook for activism.

Facebook in Egypt is Now very Slow and will be Completely Blocked in 6:00pm this evening (Egypt Time).

Nividia Tegra 3

One of the big changes in smartphones this year will be improved chipsets with NVIDIA Tegra 2 having already grabbed many a headline. Some of the hottest devices going out this year will be packing Tegar 2 dual-core chips.

Well the rumour mill has thrown up the possibility of NVIDIA introducing the Tegra 3 quad-core at MWC next month. The rumour is based off a comment made by Mike Rayfield, the general manager for Tegra:

"I am going to come pretty close to my cadence of a launch every year. It will be in production around the same time as my competitors first dual-cores will."

The Tegra 2 was launched way back in January last year so an MWC announcement this year is pretty much on the nose for a year later. Of course this is just speculation based on a single quote so treat with the usual skepticism for now.

There is change at the very top of Google Eric Schmidt, who has been Google CEO for the past 10 years, will be stepping down from that position moving to a position of an Executive Chairman. Larry Page will be replacing him starting 4 April apparently all this is a planned effort to streamline decision making…

There is no denying that Schmidt has done an excellent job running Google if you need convincing, Google just announced a 26% increase in revenue for Q4 this year compared to the same quarter last year. The revenue was $8.44 billion, beating analysts expectations.

Anyway, from now on Schmidt will be focusing on deals, partnership, business relations, government outreach, while Page will handle the day-to-day operations concerning product development and technology strategy, which reportedly are "his greatest strengths". These new positions will clarify the roles and responsibilities of the two, which will simplify the management structure and hopefully speed up decision making.

Scmidt officially puts it:

For the last 10 years, we have all been equally involved in making decisions. This triumvirate approach has real benefits in terms of shared wisdom, and we will continue to discuss the big decisions among the three of us. But we have also agreed to clarify our individual roles so there’s clear responsibility and accountability at the top of the company.

Day-to-day adult supervision no longer needed!https://goo.gl/zC89p20 January 2011 9:07 pm via web

You might be wondering what happened to the other Google co-founder, Sergey Brin. Well, he will be taking the position of a Co-Founder and he will be working on developing new products and his personal passions. He did not say what those may be but he made a comment saying they’ve only touched 1% of social integration into search, which might be a clue as to what he is working on.
