amazon phone

Amazon is said to be developing its own smartphone, which will compete against the iPhone and the Android smartphones, says Bloomberg. The world's largest online retailer is said to have partnered with Foxconn to manufacture the handset for it.

There are no other details available at the moment but if Amazon plans to compete with iPhone their phone has to be high-end, unlike the Kindle Fire, which was a budget offering. We don't know what software it would be running but it's fair to assume it would be a heavily customized version of Android such as the one on the Kindle Fire.

Considering Amazon has its own application store, along with books, music, movies and loads of other stuff, it really doesn't matter if it doesn't allow access to the Google Play Store.

App store

Claiming that the term "App Store" has become a generic title, lawyers for Amazon are asking a judge to toss Apple's lawsuit against the online retailer for calling its applications store the Amazon Appstore.

"Apple presumably does not contend that its past and current CEOs made false statements regarding to those other app stores to thousands of investors in earnings calls. To the contrary, the use of the term 'app store' to refer to stores selling apps is commonplace in the industry." - Amazon

Amazon attorneys noted in a filing that even Apple's last two CEOs (the late Steve Jobs and Tim Cook) had used the app store phrase generically when talking about what was then called the Android Market. Apple holds a trademark on the App Store name and originally filed the suit in March 2011.

Amazon Apps

The Amazon Appstore launched fairly recently and its really cool offering a paid app for free every day but unfortunately its limited to US customers. So I did some searching around and discovered that there is a fairly easy workaround to give access to their store to everyone, not just those in the USA.

Requirements

Using the Appstore requires a US credit card, address, and phone number, but fortunately not a USA IP and there are ways to meet these criteria without living in the USA.

Setting up

Creating Your US Amazon Account

Firstly, to use the Amazon Appstore you need an Amazon.com account, it should be completely separate from your main account with a different e-mail address. To sign up just visit this sign in page and select "No, I am a new customer", then enter the email address that you wish to use.

Enter email address and select 'new customer' to create an account

Setting Up a Billing Address

Next you will need a US shipping address which is the billing address needed for the account, you can do this at the Manage Address Book page and this must be a valid US address.

I recommend using Fake Name Generator because it gives you information for a random fake person, including a valid US address and much more information: all that you need to set up this account.

Alternatively you could just enter any US address because you are not actually going to ship anything there, so 1 Infinite Loop Cupertino, CA 95014 would work.

Setting Up a Phone Number

Again you will need a valid US phone number. There are multiple ways of doing this, I recommend using the site given above because it gives you a valid number that you do not have to worry about. Alternatively you could just enter any number starting with +1

Setting Up a Payment Card

You need a valid US payment card, a number for which can be once again found on the link given above if you do not own one. Or you can just use one of these sample ones from Paypal.

Install the Appstore on Your Device

Now that you have set up your Amazon.com account, you will need to install the Appstore App on your device. You can download the APK from numerous places opening this URL on your device will download it directly and from there is it simple to install.

Using the Appstore

Open the app and you are up and running and can now download that free app of the day and any other free apps. If you have set up the account with a valid payment card then paid apps will work and you can get those Angry Bird Ad-free apps, or any of those Amazon exclusive apps you have been salivating over. If the card information you entered was just from the random person website or anything else that is not a valid US account, To buy an App you will need to:

  • "Purchase the app on the Amazon website or on your device the initial payment will fail
  • Visit the Digital Orders Page and you will see your pending purchases
  • Choose the option to retry the purchases, this time using your non-US card"

The payments will complete and you will be able to purchase paid apps too!

Android Amazon App store

According to the latest stats from Flurry, the Apple App Store has a red-hot challenger on its tail and it is not just the Google Play Store.

Using stats compiled during the 45 days from January, for every $1 in revenue that came into the Apple App Store, $0.89 was spent in the Amazon Appstore. Trailing badly is the Google Play Store that had only $0.23 of sales for each $1 spent in Apple online applications store.

Apple starts to fear the tremendous grow of the Amazon app store and the Android platform everyday, getting this close in less than one year, is a scary point for Apple.

The New Kindle fire

The Upcoming Amazon Kindle fire 2nd-generation is now just months away from production and could launch in Q2 of this year. Besides sporting a larger than expected 10-inch display instead of an 8.9-inch screen, this tablet is expected to have NVIDIA quad-core Tegra 3 under the hood. As you know by now, the Amazon Kindle Fire launched last November in time for the holiday season and quickly had Amazon as the number 2 position among global tablet vendors.

Kindle fire

Amazon has yet to announce this tablet, but on Thursday, Amazon had placed an order for chassis from the Catcher Technologies plant in Taizhou, China. We take this with the usual grain of salt, including the estimate that Catcher gross margin will be 40% on the order. If true, this could be the signal to expect a new tablet to start undergoing production within the next few months.

kindle fire HD plus

The Amazon Kindle Fire HD new family of tablets is here and the big surprise seems to be that Amazon is now focusing more on full-color tablets. Here is the Whole Family with its specs in a table so you can make your mind easily... Which one you consider buying ?

Kindle Fire HD

Earlier this week, word had it that the newly-announced Amazon Kindle Fire HD tablets might be more difficult to hack than their predecessors. The reasons behind that statement were the processor's advanced security features and the signed bootloader, which prevent users from loading custom firmware onto the slate. In other words, aftermarket ROMs with stock Android builds instead of Amazon's heavily customized, and somewhat limited software seemed like a no-go.

However, there seems to be light at the end of the tunnel now that the 7-inch Amazon Kindle Fire HD tablet has been rooted. In fact, anyone who wants to obtain root access on their Fire HD (Note, this will void your warranty) is free to open up XDA Developers and follow the how-to guide, which has been posted a few days ago.
