Samsung TE4

Mysterious Samsung TE4 device has appeared in rightware's benchmark database, causing quite a stir as it popped up with an ARM Mali-T604 graphics processor, indicating an Exynos 5-series processor with ARM Cortex-A15 cores. Given that TC4 is the coding for Samsung's tablet reference platform, through which it demonstrates its Exynos 4 chips prowess, that TE4 development board has to stand for something else.

Exynos 5250

The device sports a 1280x752 pixels of resolution, to which we have to add the on-screen Android navigational buttons, and the cores are clocked at 1.7GHz, just like on the officially announced dual-core Exynos 5250. It is highly unlikely that the device is a tablet, then, like the WQXGA monster Samsung demonstrated to us at the CES expo in January, as the company wouldn't waste all that graphics power on such a run-of-the-mill tablet resolution.

Exynos 5

The Samsung-made Exynos 5 chipset, has gone through some benchmarking and to has proved to be quite the performance champion.

The test in question is GL Benchmark and currently the dual-core Cortex A15 processor running at 1.7GHz and quad-core ARM Mali T604 GPU tops the charts, beating the LG Optimus G and the Pantech Vega R3. The Mali-T604 inside the Exynos 5 smokes the Adreno 320 GPU (found in the Optimus G), managing nearly 34 fps in the GLBenchmark 2.5 Egypt HD Offscreen (1080p) test.

You may already know that Samsung Exynos 5 (aka Exynos 5250) Dual-core processors that Samsung included on its latest Nexus 10 tablet, it's the first Cortex A15 cip to be paired with Mali T604 GPU, but Samsung want to improve it even more adding another 2 cores to double its performance.

Evidence suggests that a Samsung Exynos 5440 is already in the works. This new SoC will be of the Quad-core kind and will also utilize Cortex A15 processors. All this lines up nicely with the rumors about a new 28nm chip that Samsung is currently being tested.

Exynos 5440

We hope to learn more about the Quad-core Exynos 5440 during the first months of 2013. Details about the new chip might be announced at MWC 2013, which kicks off on February,25th.

Samsung will present an 8-core Octa Core chip of Cortex A15 and Cortex A7 CPU cores in a "Big.Little" configuration at the CES 2013 event today. "Big.Little" architecture combines very low-power cores like Cortex A7 with very high-performance cores like Cortex A15, for a well optimized mobile experience and balanced battery life.

First 8 Core Mobile Processor

It's possible that for the time being we'll only see a chip that contains 2 clusters of dual core CPU's for smartphones (2 A15+2 A7), although there's no rumor of this chip existing yet, but it seems like the natural progression for Samsung Exynos 5 Dual that currently lacks the A7 parts.

This would be the first 8-cores mobile processor in the markets, showing us the future after the Quad-core, let's wait and see if this Exynos beast will beat the Nvidia Tegra 4 with the 72 GPU cores.
