iPhone 4G

The iPhone 4G seems to attract problems. First, the phone was leaked long before Apple wanted it to be. Then, the iPhone 4G problems came in pre-ordering and delivery. Next, white iPhone 4G problems abounded. Now, the final straw, iPhone 4G reception is proving problematic.

iPhone 4G problems: Reception

Though the design of the iPhone 4G is geared toward actually improving the reception of the phone, many users have been discovering a quirk. The steel-band antenna around the iPhone 4G quickly kills all reception if a user touches the bottom-left corner of the phone. Apple’s solution to this problem is simply “just don’t hold the phone that way.” You could also spend money above and beyond the phone, iPhone apps, your data plan and your voice plan to get a case. Either way, the iPhone 4G reception problems appear to be an Apple-admitted design flaw. Perhaps duct tape would fix it?

iPhone 4G problems: Colors

Sure, there isn’t any difference in the technology behind the iPhone 4G black and iPhone 4G white, but there are “manufacturing issues.” The promised iPhone 4G white will not be available for at least a few more weeks, if not months.

iPhone 4G problems: Ordering and delivery

Though the problems with the iPhone 4G ordering and delivery are slowly working themselves out, it has been a long time coming. The promised delivery date for the iPhone 4G was changed several times. First, the online AT&T store crashed. Then, the Apple store shut down orders. Next, the delivery date was pushed back. Even still, some customers were told they had successfully pre-ordered a phone when they hadn’t, and visa versa. Finally, FedEx appeared to have iPhone 4G problems of its own — with delivery happening only sometimes.

iPhone 4G problems to come?

The iPhone 4G problems stem, partially, from the extreme demand for the device. However, there are structural problems that the iPhone 4G has which simply are not being fixed. IPhone 4G reception being killed by how most people hold the phone is a design “feature” that has existed since the last incarnation. Not having reception may be a good thing though — because AT&T’s new data plans are structured in a way that you will be able to download maybe 2 TV episodes before you go over data allowances for the month.

Are you having iPhone 4G problems? How have you fixed them?

iPhone 4.0.1 software update has just been released by Apple. It comes along with some bug fixes as well as the highly discussed improved signal strength formula that is expected to magically solve iPhone 4's reception issues.

iOS 4.0.1

There are also some other bug fixes brought by the iOS 4.0.1. The iOS 4.0.1 is only compatible with iPhone 3G (though that doesn't work particularly well), iPhone 3GS and the recently launched iPhone 4.

You may not believe it, but the model has been delayed again! The new date now is March 2011. Apple haters claim that the company cannot sell its model in another color. Surprisingly, everybody happy! Apple sells black iPhones as hot cakes and do not care about the offered colors, while its critics were proved to be right once again. Boy Genius Report quotes its sources and claims that Apple has no plans for the white model until the introduction of iPhone 5. It is also possible!

If I were the CEO of Apple I would have offered the white model to Verizon. It could be nice if ATandT sells the black model, while Verizon boasts white. Everybody will be satisfied to some extent. White model will not be sold in Europe then.

Code

Some reliable sources have discovered quad-core processor support into the iOS 5.1 beta code. So, we could expect quad-core iPhones and iPads in the near future. It is good to know Apple is already working on the next big hardware jump.

A few months ago other skilful developers discovered the "iPhone5,1" reference into the first iOS 5.1 beta code. It might turn out Apple is indeed gearing the next iPhone with a quad-core A6 chip.

iOS 5.1 Beta 3

Apple released iOS 5.1 Beta 2 on December 12 with Build number 9B5127a. The current beta now uses build number 9B5141a.

iOS 5.1 B3 OTA

iOS 5.1 beta 3 restores a sought after feature by many users, Enable 3G. The Enable 3G toggle allows users to completely shut off their cellular data, something that is currently unavailable. iOS users who use WiFi at work and home, experience heavy battery loss due to the fact that 3G and WiFi are running simultaneously. With this new feature, users can simply switch off 3G and use WiFi and can switch on WiFi just as easily. Apple noted under the toggle feature, that "3G offers faster data speeds but uses more battery power than EDGE".

Apple Store china

The much-anticipated release of the iPhone 4S in China stumbled out of the gate in Beijing, after unruly crowds kept the store closed on release day.

iPhone4s

The ChronicDevTeam has a video showcasing an untethered jailbreak on an iPhone 4S, running on iOS 5.0.1.

The video seems real. We are demonstrated a reboot after which Cydia is still functional and last but not least we are shown the different antenna design and a running Siri version.

This sort of a jailbreak solution has been available on A4-powered iDevices but, up until now, it had its ups and downs on the A5-powered iPad 2 and iPhone 4S.

Removing both the front and rear cameras from an iPhone 4S does not sound like the best way to attract new customers to your network.

That is however, precisely what Singapore-based carrier M1 are offering to potential customers and before you call for the men in white coats to take them away, there is method in their madness.

The operator say that the front and rear camera modules have been completely removed rather than just covered up and the altered hardware means that they 'may not be reinstalled'. But why?

Unless you are from Singapore you may not realize that men are required to fulfill two years of mandatory military service. These 'blind' iPhones have been certified by Singapore Ministry of Defense (Mindef) for use within military installations, meaning those either in the army full-time or just in the service for their compulsory two years, can use them

A5 Jailbreak

A jailbreak for the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 has just been released by the "Dev Dream Team" just moments ago. Apparently, cracking the A5 was "Not exactly a walk in the park" according to the entire team. The jailbreak is termed GreenPois0n Absinthe and is now available for download on Mac OS X alone.

Users must be on iOS 5.0.1 or this WILL NOT WORK. And for the record if you update to iOS 5.0.2 when it comes out, you will completely lose the jailbreak.

Old Apple Deivces

A new custom firmware called Whited00r lets you install portions of iOS 5 on older iPhone models.

Whited00r

Some highlights include iOS 5-style reminders, sounds, shadows, wallpapers and folders. It also jailbreaks your phone and provides a carrier unlock, if needed.

Whited00r brings a few modern improvements to the older iOS 3 and iOS 4 platforms to match the latest developments of iOS 5.

iPhone4s and iPad2

It is now possible to perform an untethered jailbreak on an iPhone or iPad with the A5 chipset, as long as you are running firmware 5.0.1 and below.

These are the downloads over the last 3 days:

  • 491,325 new iPhone 4 devices
  • 308,967 new iPad2 devices
  • 152,940 previously jailbroken (at 4.x) iPad 2 devices
  • 953,232 total

The numbers were calculated using Cydia, the jailbreak app store, which can track queries being made to the server.

Foxconn

iPhone 5, has been tipped by a Foxconn China employee and is said to ready for production now with a summer launch in the wings. This newest iPhone is said to have several iterations being tested at the moment, with no one model being the clear victor before full production begins. Each of these devices has at least a 4-inch display with one of them being made by LG.

Each of the devices being tipped here are symmetrical in thickness, this meaning they are the same width at the top as at the base with no "teardrop-shape" in any of them. Each model is also longer and/or wider than the current iPhone 4S. None of the devices being tipped have the same form factor as the iPhone 4/4S, and none of the devices are absolutely final in their build.

EarSmart

Apple refusal to put its Siri voice control system on the iPhone 4 is not a shameless play to persuade users to upgrade to the 4S, it is suggested, but a limitation of the Apple A5 chip found inside the newest iOS smartphone. The A5, Linley Group analyst Linley Gwennap says, was always too large simply to accommodate two Cortex A9 CPUs and a GPU, CNET reports; the extra bulk is to house an on-chip noise-reduction system sourced from specialists Audience, which revealed its deal with Apple last month.

siri

"Apple has integrated our processor IP in certain of its mobile phones" Audience confirmed in its IPO documentation last month. Based on the company EarSmart technology, it allows phones to use effective background noise cancellation even when the microphone is held at arm reach, rather than when it is near the user mouth.

Audience does not detail its "custom processor for Apple" but the volume inclusion timescale Q4 of 2011 fits in with the launch of the iPhone 4S. EarSmart models the human brain, using two microphones and custom DSP to filter out background sound.

GPP unlock SIM

The carrier-locked iPhones became a much lesser problem since the iPhone hit most of the major carriers worldwide. But there are those people who still buy foreign carrier-locked iPhone for various reasons. so a tool like this would be very useful.

The GPP SIM tool reportedly unlocks successfully every AT&T-bound iPhone 4S as well as the Japan KDDI and Softbank iPhone 4S. As with similar solutions such as Gevey and RebelSIM, you just put your SIM along with the insert into the provided SIM tray and insert the lot into the iPhone.

According to the GPP Team, the GPP SIM unlocks every AT&T iPhone 4S phones running iOS 5.0 and iOS 5.01 no jailbreak needed. There is no mention whether the GPP SIM will work with other carrier-locked iPhones as well.

Gorilla Glass

Not all of us know that iPhone uses Corning Glass on its screen. However, Apple never confirmed this officially before, Apple even removed Corning from its 2011 list of suppliers. But NOW, Apple has finally verified that it is indeed using the company latest glass technology in a statement about the over half a million jobs Apple has created (statement link below).

"Corning employees in Kentucky and New York who create the majority of the glass for iPhone," Apple credits the company in its Job Creation report.

Apple A5X

According to some leaked reports, Apple has seeded a new iPhone to its internal testers. The exterior design has not been revealed just yet. The only thing different is the A5X chipset, the same on the 3rd generation iPad (New iPad).

Predictably, Apple has put the A5X chip in the iPhone 4/4S body and has seeded it to testers in Cupertino. The variation of the A5X chip in question is the S5L8945X, which packs 1GB of RAM. This iPhone prototype model number is N96.

iPod touch 5.1

Also, Its good to mention that the iPod Touch did not get any hardware upgrade last year and it is only logical for Apple to make up for it this year. And if an internal build of iOS 5.1 is to be trusted, Apple is indeed working on the next iPod Touch. Labeled 5,1, the next iPod Touch should finally introduce a dual-core CPU to the portable player.

Camera Joystick

Playing games on your touch-enabled phone can be frustrating if you have small screen device like the iPhone 3.5-inch. But here comes a solution, A research group from Keio University are in development of a joystick add-on that's placed on top of your front-facing camera and can, depending on the precision of your hardware, perform the simple actions of navigating left, right, up and down in apps and games.

The small elastic joystick has markers that your camera can detect and track and give you a "variety of inputs".

Verizon

Verizon announced during its earnings call today that 15 million Android phones were activated and nearly 11 million iPhones were sold. This news comes after the largest wireless carrier in the United States activated a record of over 4 million iPhones in the fourth quarter.

Apparently these numbers were not too impressive as investors punished the company stock because costs associated with offering the iOS handset weighed heavily on Big Red earnings.

Samsung ad

There is nothing like a good burn to start off your Tuesday afternoon, that being exactly what Samsung has aimed at doing today as they release their next in a long line of burns on the iPhone with the Galaxy S II.

As this particular video spot shows, the Samsung Galaxy S II running Android has the ability to translate your voice into text and send a text message without a hitch, this much to the dismay of a very chilly customer whose iPhone does not do the same. When he steps in the hipster clothing store it all becomes rather apparent where his heart lies.

Samsung Ad Street challenge

Samsung can not stop sniping at Apple, and the latest Galaxy Note street challenge seems to have convinced at least one disgruntled iPhone4s owner, Comparing between the two phones capabilties "Embarrassed" the iPhone user. (Watch the Video Below!)

For its latest commercial, Samsung apparently took its 5.3-inch smartphone-tablet hybrid to the mean streets of New York City, giving Android users a few hours to get to grips with the "phablet", and then pitted them against iPhone owners on a series of challenges. The Two companies still have HUGE issues and patents between each other in the US and many other countries.

Apple vs. Samsung

The street tasks go heavy on in-built functionality, with the Galaxy Note annotation abilities as well as its photo editing tools each put through their paces. In contrast, the poor iPhone owner is left gaping at her Samsung-toting rival.

The app in question is called Clear and it is not even out yet. I stumbled upon a video ad for it and I was amazed. It has been a while since we have ever seen a user interface so beautifully simple, elegant and intuitive.

Clear main and only function is to help you organize your life by creating easy to follow to-do lists. There are many to-do list apps and organizers out there, but it is Clear user interface that will make you buy this app when it comes out, Make sure you check out the App Demo video below.

Tether

During 2011, Tether submitted its iTether app to the App Store to let users tether to their iPhones even if the functionality was not available by default from the carrier. Although Apple initially allowed the app, it was later removed from the App store as apple was saying that the app burdens the network.

But Now, Tether has come up with a new HTML5 version of iTether, which lets you tether to your iPhone using the Safari browser instead of a dedicated app.

For this to work, you first have to install the companion app on your PC, create an account and then create an ad hoc network. Once that is done, you connect to that newly created Wi-Fi network from the phone and then launch the Tether website and log into the account you just created. And that's it, your PC is now connected to the Internet through the phone.

You can save the website to the homescreen so you can quickly launch it just like a native app. This service comes for a small fee of $30 for one year and Tether even offers a 30 day money-back guarantee in case you are not satisfied with it.
