I guess you still remember how AT&T held exclusivity for iPhone sales in the US for many years - up until the Verizon iPhone 4 was finally launched last year. Well, the same thing has been going on in China.

When the iPhone first arrived over there, the exclusive carrier has been China Unicom. That's the second biggest carrier, as China Mobile (who's No.1) uses TD-SCDMA for 3G, a Chinese tech which hasn't so far been used anywhere else in the world and which Apple has been reluctant to include into its iPhones. So that left Apple with the choice of selling an EDGE device to China Mobile customers or going with China Unicom, which uses the WCDMA 3G that's also found pretty much everywhere across the globe.

But the Verizon (and then Sprint) iPhone launches meant that Apple now gonna make a CDMA iPhone. And China Telecom has a CDMA mobile network in China. So, Guys, starting today, for the first time there's some competition in China for the iPhone. China Telecom has started selling the iPhone 4S today, almost two months after China Unicom did the same thing. Although it's the smallest of the ‘big three' Chinese carriers, China Telecom will surely benefit immensely from the new partnership with Apple.

As you probably know it already, Nokia sued Apple in 2009, saying the iPhone violated 10 patents. It later added claims when the iPad was introduced.  Apple countersued after which Nokia added to its criticism, saying that the Cupertino company violated its patents "in just about all of its products." Nokia's claims in opposition to Apple grew to include 46 patents.

The technology covered by the patents included such features as touch scrolling and display illumination.

But today, Apple Inc. has agreed to make a one-time licensing cost and persevering with royalties to Nokia Corp. to settle a long-running patent dispute.  While the specifics of the agreement have not been revealed, it's reasonable to assume that Apple will pay a hefty sum to Nokia, and the timing could not be better for the Finnish giant, which is struggling to restructure its smartphone business and regain its waning market share.

Steve Jobs had a lot to say Monday during his conference call with analysts following Apple's announcement of record earnings and sales. Here's the Apple CEO in his own words.

Hi, everybody. As most of you know, I don't usually participate in Apple earnings calls, since you're all in such capable hands with Peter and Tim. But I just couldn't help dropping by for our first 20-billion-dollar quarter. I'd like to chat about a few things, and then stay for the rest of the Q&A, if that's all right.

First, let me discuss iPhone. We sold 14.1 million iPhones in the quarter, which represents a 91 percent unit growth over the year-ago quarter, and was well ahead of IDC's latest published estimate of 64 percent growth for the global smartphone market in the September quarter. And it handily beats RIM's 12.1 million BlackBerrys sold, in their most recent quarter ending in August.

We've now passed RIM. And I don't see them catching up with us in the foreseeable future. They must move beyond their area of strength and comfort, into the unfamiliar territory of trying to become a software platform company. I think it's going to be a challenge for them to create a competitive platform and to convince developers to create apps for yet a third software platform after iOS and Android. With 300,000 apps on Apple's App Store, RIM has a high mountain ahead of them to climb.

The iPhone four is proving rather more fashionable than Apple's earlier model, the iPhone 3GS, which received sixty five,000 preorders in the first 5 days of reservations in the country. It took 5 days for the Galaxy S, Samsung Electronics Co.'s flagship smartphone released in June, to interrupt the 100,000 sales milestone in the domestic market.

Upon opening at 6 a.m. Wednesday, the preorder Web page for the iPhone four skilled a delay for about one hour as the server was overloaded by tens of thousands of customers accessing the site at the similar time, in response to a KT spokesman.

KT started receiving preorders with out stating the exact date it will ship the model. The iPhone 4 will likely be launched someday in September, in line with KT.

South Korea was originally on the list of 18 international locations for the iPhone four's July release, but it was the one country dropped from the list. Apple and KT postponed the launch citing regulatory requirements.

KT is hoping to boost its smartphone gross sales and retain subscribers as its rival SK Telecom Co., South Korea's prime mobile carrier, sold greater than 600,000 models of Samsung's Galaxy S as of last month, amid the delay within the iPhone four's local release.

Earlier this month, Apple came out with a statement saying that the anntenna problem on the iPhone 4 was actually a software issue and they will be coming out with a fix soon.

Michael Gikas, senior editor of electronics at Consumer Reports said in a phone interview that the earlier blog post was a "first impression" of the iPhone 4 and the latest report is based on detailed laboratory experiments showing the phones issues are clearly a hardware malfunction.

Quote statement by Michael Gikas:

"We don't believe that consumers should pay extra money to fix the problem," Mr. Gikas said. "We think either Apple should supply free cases for the phone or come up with another solution. That's why we are not recommending the iPhone 4."

Sad news for Apple, I hope they won't be dealing with class-action lawsuits regarding this problem in the future.
