Android & iPhone

Are you fed up with iPhone Operating System? Then, as many websites previously reported, Android 2.2 (codenamed Froyo) is now available to use on your iPhone 3G. We've seen an older Android running on iPhone before, but it seems hackers managed to get the new Froyo out for iPhone too and, why shouldn't we say, if using an older version of Android on your iPhone wouldn't tempt you at all, a new version might change your mind.

You will buy an iPhone 4G, probably, and your contract may be over soon. If you are bored and really fed up with the old phone, then you can try Android 2.2 on it. We do not recomment id, anyway, because hackers weren't able to make Wi-Fi and sound work on it, so it pretty much takes everything nice from you. The experience will be worse also because is less probable Android 2.2 will run very good on iPhone, because it's just not made for it.

INQLast year INQ announced they will release a new Android this year, but until today we didn't knew anything about it. Now we know for sure INQ Android will come in the fourth quarter of this year. The phone will be called GigaOM and will run Google's operating system. The handset will be a touchscreen with multi-touch capabilities. We do not know more about it, unfortunately.

INQ's devices are Brwe-based phones with Skype and social networking integrated, including Facebook or Twitter. INQ sold more than 1.5 million units of the INQ Chat 3G, its latest qwerty handset. Many people do not know about INQ devices, but that's because this company is successful in UK, Italy or India. Never heard of INQ devices in the United States.

It seems INQ wants to go after Samsung and Sony Ericsson, following them in the Android market. Now we will just have to wait and see if they are also going to manage it. Hutchinson Whampoa has lots of it and it seems it will not hold back when putting money into this business, especially when talking about a business that brings billion dollars each year.

X10

Today is Sony Ericsson's day for sure. After announcing the brand new full-touch-Walkman called Yendo, the Sweden-based phone producer announced the new Xperia X8 too, and some Android 2.1 updates for X10. The new X8 will be like a smaller brother for the X10, and as expected will be cheaper too.

The X8 will be powered up by a 600MHz processor, will pack a 3.0 inch (320x480) screen, a 3.2MP camera, 3.5mm headset jack, 2GB included microSD card, Wi-Fi, GPS and Bluetooth. We don't know for sure if it will run Android 1.6 or 2.1, but if it will run the first one, there is probably going to be an update to 2.1 soon after the release. No price is yet available, and the only thing known about the release date is that the phone will come in the third quarter of 2010.

Speaking of Android updates. Besides announcing the new X8, Sony Ericsson also announced an Android 2.1 update for the X10 line, which will also come in the Q3 of 2010. For the original X10 (foto) this will also bring HD video recording capabilities.

LG Optimus

LG announced today that they will expand their Optimus range with two other devices, called Optimus one and Optimus Chic. Both will run Android 2.2 Froyo. In this announcement they also said that Optimus Q and Optimus Z will also get Froyo updates in the coming months. We don't have to forget LG announced up to 10 new devices until the end of the year, and this announcement makes us happy, because they had a rather slow start.

The press release brings us no specs. We just know they will run Froyo and they will probably have Wi-Fi connectivity. We don't know more, LG kept the secret and there are no leaks out there. We know now Optimus Q and Z will get Froyo updates, but we haven't heard anything about the original Optimus. In the press release they also talked about their future Windows Mobile 7 phone, saying it will be released this year. No date, no specs, not anything.

Google Maps

Today Google announced they will offer the same free turn-by-turn Google Maps in more countries from now on. If you want to use it outside UK or US, now you can if you live in Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland. That's more than only two countries, isn't it?

Google Maps Navigation is an online GPS navigation system with voice output and is available starting Androi 1.6. The application uses the smartphone's internet connection to get accurate turn-by-turn indications. Many shops and different places were updated, petrol stations are also on the maps and there's also street view available. There's also car dock available for various handsets.

Some of the countries will also have voice search available, such as Germany, Canada, France, Italy and Spain. Other developments are expected soon, with Google declaring more than once they want to fully cover the whole Europe (with street view too) in a two-year time. Half of it already passed and as we can see, Google continued the good work they've started with Google Maps. Let's see which are the next countries that will get the Google Maps activation.

HTC DesireAndroid 2.2 went live for Nexus One, but his "brother" from Europe will also get the Froyo soon. It's possible this update to come 23rd July, so you will not have to wait too much until you can have it if you own a Desire. The guys from PhAndroid spotted Froyo on XDA-Dev, a forum for developers.

HTC Desire, codenamed Bravo, is available at many European carriers at about $250, depending on if it's a deal involved or not. It has a 5MP camera, packs 512 MB RAM, is powered up by a 1GHz Snapdragon processor and has a 3.7 inch AMOLED touchscreen.

Android ApplicationsSometimes it just happens an application is crashing and you bevome very angry with the store or the provider. Well, if that's the case, from now on you have the Android error reporting system, announced at Google I/O. Just send the report to a developer, he'll fix it and send back to you, and that's that.

You will have the option to tell the developer exactly what went wrong and the developers will find all of those informations in the Android Market control panel. This is also a good thing for developers because now they also know what is wrong with their application and can fix them as soon as possible to provide the users a good experience.

HTC DesireHTC launched the most smartphone this year and it seems they do not want to stop here. Anyway, the Taiwanese producer announced most of their devices will run Android 2.2 until the end of this year. A full list of all the phones which will run Android 2.2 will be available soon, maybe around the date HTC Evo 4G will be launched. Indications about software updates will come in the second half of this year. It's obvious models like HTC Desire, Evo 4G or Legend will all run Android 2.2 before this year is through.

Android

When talking about market shares, we now have another important contender for the first places: Android. After surpassing Microsoft, they've reached the 4th place on a global scale. Android became now the 4th biggest smartphone operating system around the world. There's still a long way to beat Symbian, iPhone OS and BlackBerry, but smoking Windows Mobile out is a nice moment for Android.

This may also be because of the open source, that allows every user to do whatever he wants with Android, instead of Windows Mobile, which is not open source (as Windows for computers).

In the first quarter of the year, Android sold 10% of all the smartphones around. They even beat iPhone OS in US in Q1. As we told you yesterday, many experts from Sillicon Valley actually expect Android to catch up iPhone OS soon. This is an impressive growth because Android had to fight with other four major OS around. This can only mean one thing: competitivity. And as you know, competitivity always brings the best out of the contenders.

HTC Evo 4GThe 4.3 inch screen smartphone will come soon and there's always need of a short review of any phone coming. This is a high-expected device, though it's maybe not the best coming, but I think it deserves being bought. It's capable of 3G/4G, has two cameras, will be released Friday, on 4th June, has Wi-Fi hotspot capabilities and on a service plan it will not be more than $199 from Sprint.

Even if the huge bright screen improves the quality of everything, the battery is not good at all. I would even call it terrible. Having this Evo 4G, with that big screen, will never let you go back to anything else before. It's just a stunning view. The phone is thick and fits well in pocket, you will never find it uncomfortable or too big to carry. You may find it big when you are talking on it, but otherwise you won't even feel you have it with you.

Evo 4G is light, solid and strong. The back camera, an 8MP device, has a nice design and it's powerful than ever. Unfortunately, the camera may get damaged because the phone rests on the front lip of the metal housing. Anyway, the camera is one of this device strong point. The camera does a good job, sure it will not replace your DSLR, but it will still get it done. The autofocus works well and quick, maybe quicker than iPhone.

Going back to the battery, this is a weak spot of the smartphone. The phone losses a third of its battery in the night, considering it's without GPS, Wi-Fi or 4G. Even with Advanced Task Killer, it's difficult to get more than 1 day. It seems you will have to keep the smartphone plugged in all the time, otherwise you may find it dead when you need it the most.

Android vs. iPhone

It's strongly touted as Android will catch up iPhone until the end of 2010, but is it really going to be the case? Android beat iPhone in the first quarter of the year, selling 28% (64.000 shipments per day), while iPhone sold just 21%, but many experts consider this as a fight that will never end. Even if Android has a lot of potential, people also expect iPhone to reach their best condition in the same time. It's still not sure if there is going to be a clear winner in this fight.

On the other side, Android has the confidence of many people from Sillicon Valley, who are confident it is able to jump even higher than their actual standards. They also believe Android has enough potential to get on top and hold to their market share a while. And if you have Sillicon Valley's trust, why shouldn't you believe everything is possible?

HTC Evo 4GI wrote here about HTC Evo 4G being soon available, and it seems we were not the only one doing this. Many other experts previewed and reviewed Evo 4G and most of the tip it to be one of the best smartphones ever. The battery life is high, the 4G streaming quality is the same, the 8MP camera with dual LED flash is impressive and the design is nice too. HTC Evo 4G impressed almost everybody who tried it. Besides the video quality, which isn't so great, any other feature is really worth having.

Powered up by a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, 512 MB RAM and using Android 2.1, Evo 4G is one of the fastest smartphones out there. It's even faster than the first computer I had, for God's sake. Can you even imagine that? The screen is a 4.3 inch and the battery is a 1500 mAH Li-Ion. In my opinion, HTC Evo 4G is one of the best smartphone I've ever talked about and I really can't wait to see how much money I will have to spend for having it.

Game on Motorola

Gameloft, a well known game producer, decided to avoid Android Market and to sell games through their website. Now you can buy games like Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X., Assasin's Creed or Asphalt 5, which are among other very nice fun applications available. Buying games this new way will force the user to modify his known steps. He will have to set his phone to accept downloading files from "unknown source", which can prove to be dangerous.

Gameloft's vice president said Android Market is still in its "early stages" and they want to try other paths to sell their products. This happens after last year, when Gameloft significantly cut investments in Android platforms.

HTC WildfireWhen HTC Wildfire was releaved, I told you right here. Now we also found out HTC Wildfire will be available soon in UK and will be sold by T-Mobile. After Virgin Media, which will be able to sell it, T-Mobile UK will also offer the smartphone starting June 14th. The information was releaved during a tweet: "The newly announced HTC Wildfire will be available to T-Mobile customers from the 14th June. A date for the diary"

We do not know the price of the device powered up by a 525MHz processor and working on Android 2.1, but the release date is not far from today, so we will not have to wait too much.

AndroidThe conflict between Apple and Adobe is well known in the world of online & IT. Well, it seems Adobe didn't accepted to be thrown out from the stage and allied with Google to take on Steve Jobs' success. The next version of Android, 2.2, will also offer Flash support. After the update, many spreaded smartphones will run Android 2.2, as HTC Evo, Droid, Nexus One, and this may be a hit for Apple's business. At the upgrade the user will be welcomed by a link where he can find all the websites that are featuring Flash 10.1. South Park Studios, BBC, Google Finance and Miniclip are among them.

Android 2.2, codename "Froyo", is based on Linux Kernel 2.6.32 and is said it will improve a lot the machine's speed, will introduce USB tethering and WiFi hotspot functionality and will also have support of Application Installation to Memory Card. It's not known yet the official date of the release, but we think it will appear in the third or fourth quarter of this year.

Samsung CorbyWe've seen many types of Corbys around and rumors are suggesting the new I5500 Corby will run Android 2.1. This means I5500 will be the first Corby to actually receive a smartphone degree. There are not many leaks about the new device, but we know it has a Wi-Fi certificate for the b/g/n protocols. It also features 3G, Bluetooth and GPS. It's widely expected the camera will have more than 3MP resolution.

The price is expected to be around $200, which is one of the lowest price to pay for a smartphone, putting the new Samsung in a good, affordable price range. We haven't see any picture of the new Corby, but we think we will not have to wait too much until they will be released.

Motorola i1The new Motorola, called i1, will be released next month, on 20th June, as announced in an advertising at the Indianapolis 500 event. The smartphone is Boost Mobile's first Android device (and maybe the best). The phone will also iDEN push-to-talk functionality. The device will have incredible features, as it will be dustproof, shockproof and rainproof. I can't recall a new release that has all of those three features packed in.

The smartphone packs a 3.1" 320x480 touchscreen, Wi-Fi, 5MP autofocus camera, 256MB RAM and 512MB on-board storage. The processor is a 500MHz Zeus 2.0 and the storage capacity will be on a microSD slot. The phone will integrate Opera Mini 5, to help the user have a better browsing performance.

You will have to spend $349 at BestBuy for it, if you also get Boost's $50 unlimited data/web/text plan which, in my opinion, is very expensive. I'd rather wait a little bit more before buying it with this plan, because $50 per month is an important sum that not anyone can afford paying.

Android AppsThe Memorial Day, formerly known as the Decoration Day, is here, and we found some top Android applications for this day. Epicurious Recipes is a recipe applications, because on the Memorial Day you really need to cook and spread food out. Why cook the same food as last year, when you have more than 28.000 recipes to choose from?

You don't want a storm on the Memorial Day, or if it's going to be, then you definitely want to know. The Weather Channel is what you need to find out everything about the weather outside by using your Android phone. On the Memorial Day you will need to travel, that's for sure, and the last thing you want is a speeding ticket. Use Trapster to receive an update of all the reported speed traps and checkpoints along your route.

There's not a party without music, so for the best playlist use Slacker Radio. It will give you access to all the tunes you need, but you won't have to spend time at all for putting a mix together. Let the application do the whole work. The last application, called iTriage Mobile Health, is a cool app for any day, not just this one. If someone gets injured or happens something to him, you can try to diagnose the problems by using this application. If you manage to find which is the problem, then you will also be able to treat it, or at least to help the injured man until the ambulance comes.

Google Android PhoneAt the start of the year Eric Schmidt (CEO Google Inc.) announced that his company alongside its hardware partners reached the 60.000 milestone of daily shipments. This doesn't sound too bad, does it? This month the chairman declared at the shareholders meeting that Android is getting way better in charts, by impressingly growing with 8% in three months. Google and Android are shipping now around units 65.000 per day. Their growth is good, but the question is if when will Google be able to ship per day as much as Apple does (around 96.000 units per day).

Eric Schmidt didn't declared what shipped means, as shipped could mean sold, but could also mean built and distributed in stores. Anyway, even if he would have meant the second, this is still very good for Android because distributors don't buy if they don't sell. Probably most of those 65.000 units are also sold.

HTC Evo 4GBecause the release of the new HTC Evo 4G is an important moment of this month, it seems Walmart joined BestBuy and Radio Shack and offers the phone with $199.99. This price is available only with a two-year deal upfront. Why wouldn't we consider this a very good deal, considering the smartphone is just few days before the actual release?

There is not going to be any mail-in rebate, so the buyers will not have to spend that hundred dollars and to wait receiving them back after weeks or worse, months. This is the price, you pay it, you sign the contract, the phone is yours and that's that. It's as simple as saying "Hello", no more messy mail-in rebates.

HTC Evo 4G will be released on Friday, 4th of June, and may cost around $450 off-contract. There's not an official price anyway, because we heard about an actual possible $600 for the device without any contract and we think this is difficult to swallow for anyone. Would you be prepared to pay this amount for purchasing the smartphone?

Xperia X10Do you remember the walkman? No, not the music device 20 years ago. I mean Sony Ericsson's series of mobile phones called Walkman, which was a very popular set back when it was released. Unfortunately, after lots of smartphones hitting the market, not many people were interested in Sony Ericsson Walkman anymore. The Sweden-born company thought of giving "Walkman" another chance by improving its features. And how will they do this? By running Android on him, one of the most popular operating systems around.

According to an unofficial Sony Ericsson blog, the new "Walkman" will get the same features as Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini, but without the LED Flash packed in the camera. Though the camera will be weaker, the phone will run Android as an operating system.

Sure, there's not any official information yet, take it with a pinch of salt. We don't even know if there is going to be Android 1.6 or 2.1, but it really does not matter. Sony Ericsson lost ground comparing to smartphones and featuring Android may be in their advantage.

Evo 4G at Sprint

We've been waiting too much for this moment and now it's here! The Taiwanese HTC Evo 4G is not available to purchase at Sprint. On a two year deal you will have to spend $199.99 for buying the device, but in my opinion this is one of the best deals out there, also regarding the fact that we had to wait a lot the smartphone. In this situation you will also have a $100 mail-in rebate. The limit is set to five devices for each user, that's in case you want to buy for all your family an HTC Evo 4G.

The 4.3 inch display phone, running Android 2.1 and being powered up by a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, packing 512 MB ROM and codenamed Supersonic (a suitable name, in my opinion) can also be bought off-contract, but you will have to spend $499.99 without signing any deal or extending your old one. Focused on Wireless entertainment, preorders for Evo 4G are not accepted anymore from BestBuy or Radio Shack.

Even if I will have to wait a few months, I can't wait to try and test the new Taiwanese device and have it in my pocket. I just believe this is one of the toughest rival to beat in matter of Android phones.

Sony Ericsson

Each day there's a leak out there, on the mobile phones market. There's one today too, as usual. The same day HTC Evo 4G became available at Sprint, there were found some informations about a new Android phone on a Chinese forum. The rumors talk about a 5-inch qwerty Sony Ericsson.

The phone seems to be in the bottom-driven testing, according to the source. The screen is a 5-inch, which means it's similar to Xperia's display. A second source declares the screen is actually 5.5 inch and the phone will be released this fall. It seems the smartphone is running Android 2.1, but it will probably get a Froyo update around the release date. Happy times, must we say!

I am excited about the prototype, because before hundreds of smartphones were out on the market I was a 100% Sony Ericsson fan, and I can't wait to see if they are ready to go successfuly on the Android market with a qwerty as now expected.

Source: Engadget

HTC HeroToday there's been released an HTC Hero Android 2.1 update. It's not an official release, the owners have been waiting for Sprint to release it on the market. Sure, not being an official version means you can update you HTC Hero using it, but there's not any assurance it will not root your smartphone. There is actually no way to know if this version will also be an official one in the future, but you can update your operating system if you just can't wait any longer.

You can download the update from here, but I advise you again. It's an update at your own risk, because this is not a version from any carrier.

MotorolaEven if Motorola didn't officially announced the release date of the new device, FlipOut, pundits are suggesting we will not have to wait too much for it now. The latest Android phone from the American producer comes with a full qwerty keyboard, 2.8 inch display, 700 MHz processor, 256 MB RAM and a 3.1 MP camera. FlipOut will also support Wi-Fi, GPS and dual-band 3G with HSPDA connectivity. There is going to be a standard USB slot as expected.

It is highly predicted the smartphone will be released in late May or June, so we will not have to wait many weeks until we will see it on the market.  Rumors suggest the phone will cost around $400. There are not photos of the phone yet, or at least we couldn't find any real shot of the device.

HTC Evo 4GThe final price and release date of the new HTC Evo 4G was released last week and it seems the sum isn't big at all. With a two-year contract and after a $100 mail-in rebate the smartphone will be available at just $199. It will be sold by many national retailers including BestBuy, RadioShack and Wal-Mart.

Sprint confirmed HTC Evo 4G will need a $69.99 "Everything Data Plan" monthly and a $10 "Premium Data Add-on" for WiMax. The user will have to use those plans even if he lives in a 4G coverage area. The Evo 4G can also be set as a Wi-Fi hotspot but this will requite $29.99 per month.

The smartphone features an 8MP camera, a 1GHz processor, Android 2.1 operating system and a 4.3 inch touch screen, as seen in the picture on the left-hand side. The price for the device is not big, but seeing how much the feature cost per month many people will think two times before actually buying it.

HTC Wildfire

If you're ready for another HTC device, then the Taiwanese company has another surprise for you. The features of the future HTC Wildfire were revealed today and now we are also able to present them to you. With a 532 Mhz processor and 384 MB RAM, this is not the most powerful handheld device on the market, but it will do at least a decent job. It will support microSD, it will have Bluetooth 2.1, 512 MB flash memory, Wi-Fi and a 5MP autofocus camera with LED Flash.

The new Android 2.1 smartphone will have a 3.2 inch display and the producer promises a good stand by time: 480 hours. The guys from Engadget actually tested the phone and you can find their opinion at the source.

Tegra product on AndroidNVIDIA already thinks forward and is widely expected the next processors that Android will work on will be called Tegra 2 and will be created and delivered by the Californian multinational company founded by Huang, Malachowsky and Priem. Jen Hsun Huang admitted the deal with Microsoft for the first series of Tegra may not have been in their advantage. He definitely thinks of a way to improve this also because they need to challenge Apple's A4 chip, which is a serious competitor.

Huang also admitted this new deal will also materialize with Tablets, not just with smartphones. It's widely expected that smartphones using this chipset will be seen in the third and fourth quarter of this year.

LG Optimus QThe LG LU2300, announced in South Korea last month, will be sold as LG Optimus Q in the Asian country. The phone should be available starting in the end of May via LG Telecom (South Korean mobile phone carrier). This smartphone is the second LG that uses Android, after the GT540, and it seems there is going to be a whole series of Optimus, most of them based on the same operating system.

Unlike the GT540, which is a touch-screen mobile phone, the new device has a full qwerty keyboard, WVGA AMOLED touchscreen display, 5MP camera and 1GHz processor, based on a Snapdragon chipset. This versions will only be available in the Asian country, but a modified version will also be available in the US via Verizon starting this or next week. The phone will have another name: LG Ally.

Android Apps

If you have an Android mobile phone, then you might like this article a lot. Our mates at PhAndroid released a website full of Android applications, where you can search, browse, filter apps and download them to your computer. Some of them are free, some of them are paid, but most of the ones I've seen don't need payment, and that's a very good and interesting thing for every Android user.

AndroidApplications.com aims to receive lots of feedback comments for their applications. Even if every application is rated with a number of stars, you don't know for sure if that's the right application for you, but if you read a complete review of someone who used it, then you know 100% if that's what you really need. You have quick search, filtering and sorting and that's while the website is still in Beta. You should not bother with things that are not perfect right now, but give feedback instead, because otherwise they won't fix anything.

Sony Ericsson Shakira

Let's imagine you want a Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10, but don't have enough money to spend on it, or you are not willing to. The 8.1MP camera, 1GHz Snapdragon processor and the 384 MB RAM tempts you so much that now you really want to put your hands on it. But, again, not enough money available. It seems Sony Ericsson thought of this problema dn decided to create another mobile phone that suits your needs.

It's known the Sweden-based company uses to release low-cost alternative to many other top phones, and now it's the same case. The new 'Shakira' is just like the HTC Legend to HTC Desire. The only thing we know it's that the new device will run Android 1.6 or 2.1 we're not sure about the version. We don't have enough knowledge on any other spec details.

The only thing I am not capable of liking is the name. Why would you call a mobile phone that want to be a bit less than the X10 Shakira? Is this name giving you the idea of a nice, cheap, worth-having mobile phone? Because it's not giving it to me. The name 'Shakira' only gives me a feeling of sickness, and I can't see myself answering 'Shakira" when being asked what mobile phone I have.

MyTouchAfter the Android 2.2, codenamed Froyo, was announced to come on many devices, including the new myTouch 3G Slide, many myTouch (original version) were left to wonder if they are going to taste from the latest version of the operating system. Well, according to an internal screenshot we know for sure T-Mobile wants to update the operating system for the original myTouch too.

The update will bring a modified version of the Faves Gallery, will introduce the Genius Button (as in the myTouch 3G Slide), will offer full exchange support and will bring the originator up to speed. T-Mobile, through their policy called "no phones left behind", want to assure every customer that can't upgrade to a newer phone that they will not be left behind and that they will get every update possible. There's no date of then Froyo will be available for the original myTouch, but if it's going to be the same date when the 3G Slide will get the update, then myTouch users will not have to wait too much for it.

Apps for AndroidYesterday there was a report saying that multiple Android Applications are missing from the Android market. The applications were for smartphones running Android 2.x, including Motorola Droid and HTC Evo 4G. This made the developers quite angry because they can't earn money on their own work. We didn't had to wait too much for the official answer.

The respective applications are still available for older operating systems such as Android 1.6 and also at some 3rd party viewers, but they are completely missing from the Android Market, which is actually an official apps place for every Android user. Some of the applications that were missing include VCast Video TV or Handcent SMS.

Google issued a normal apology saying also they worked to fix the problem alongside hardware partners. The applications are now back in their place, as Google said it will happen, and everybody seems to have already forgotten the problem. Now won't everyone just rush to congratulate Google for saving the day?

AndroidIf you don't have a device using Android 2.2 and use Google Chrome on your computer (exactly my situation), then Chrome-to-phone is a cool application that you would like to use. This is actually a feature of the Android 2.2 more than an application, but for older operating system it will be an application developed by LinkPush. The app lets you introduce on your phone what you're viewing on your computer using Chrome.

For the application to work you will have to install a Chrome Extension and an Android Application. LinkPush is the combination of those two and, in order to work, as I said before, both of them have to be installed.

There are also some bugs on the application, unfortunately. The app only takes the current URL and directs it to your phone, so don't expect to go exactly in the place you've been on your computer. There are also some issues with Google Maps. The app wasn't able to open the same map viewed on the computer, giving an error saying: "Unable to load the URL".

LGLG is the third mobile phone producer in the world, but regarding smartphones and Android phones, they are still far behind other producers, such as HTC or Motorola. Until today LG announced only five Android devices: LGW620, Optimus GT540, Ally for Verizon, Optimus Q LU2300 and LG SU2300. For a company that just started producing smartphone this seems to be a good amount of phones. Well, LG doesn't want to stop here. They've declared they will release 15 more smartphones until the end of this year!

Probably because they don't have such a big smartphones portfolio, LG's profit sales dropped from 6.7% last year, to 0.9% this year. Launching 20 devices until the end of this year can be considered as an aggresive policy, and in my opinion when you produce and release 15 more smartphones in 6 months, they can't be high-quality enough to challenge HTC, Samsung or Motorola.

Considering the fact that in the beginning of 2009 LG declared they want to make Windows Mobile their default operating system, we can see now how much their policy changed since that big drop of sales and the big growth of Android.

Samsung Galaxy 3 and 5

At CommunicAsia, an international communications and information technology conference, there were announced two new Android 2.1 phones: The Galaxy 3 (left) and 5 (right). The first one, the Galaxy 3, will pack a 3.2 inch 240x320 screen, will have a 3MP camera with autofocus, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0 and can even play DivX/XviD movies. There's not anything sure about the official release date, but it's probably July 2010 for Europe and Asia. Nothing known for the US.

Despite being called "5" instead of "3", the Galaxy 5 will have a tinier display, 2.8 inch 240x400, becoming one of the smallest Android devices out there. It packs a 2MP camera with autofocus, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR and will also be launched in July 2010 in Europe, Middle East, Africa, South America, China, Australia, South-East Asia and, weird enough, South-West Africa.

Both of the new device will run TouchWiz 3.0 (cstomised Android skin) and will include aGPS, 170MB on-storage, 3.5mm headset jack and microSD card slot. There's no doubt about the fact that Samsung Galaxy 3 packs better features than the Galaxy 5, but my questions is why did Samsung decided to give the better one a smaller number? There's not anything known about the prices, which is something usual when talking about Samsung.

OS chart

Well, what have you actually expected? With thousands of new application each month, with lots of new smartphones hitting the phone carriers week by week and with enough quality delivered, why shouldn't Android grow in charts? I think everybody expected Android to grow steadily, and they did it. There's a new report showing Android is at about 20 percent, while iOS is well in the fron, with 58.8%. Android shares increased since last October, up to 4.6% for the quarter and 12.2% for the year.

The big difference between iOS and Android is not made by iPhone, which has just 10.7 million compared to Android's 8.7 million units. The big gap is made by iPad and iPod Touch and this makes the big picture more difficult to undersand. If one thing is for sure, then that's Android fast growth and if Froyo will be a hit on the market as Android 2.1 was, then it's more than sure there is going to be a clich between iOS and Android soon.

HTC Legend

The new HTC Legend arrived at Bell, and it seems there's not any reason to be happy for that. The phone was released right on schedule, as announced before, but there is something weird about this release. Some time ago, Virgin Mobile released the Android 2.1 operating system before Bell, which is considered a parent company. Then, they came with very good prices: $79.99 on a three-year deal, $349.99 off-contract.

Even if it's considered a parent company, and the prices should be lower, Bell has the same price regarding the three-year contract, but for purchasing the phone off-contract you will have to pay $399.95. That's $50 more than at Virgin Mobile.

The new HTC legend is a solid device, comes with HTC Sense, 3.2 inch display, 5MP camera with autofocus, flash and video capabilities, 3.5mm headset ack, music player, radio and Wi-Fi. It can hold up until 32GB with microSd card.

HTC Hero

There were reports last days that Android 2.1 may come sooner than expected for HTC Hero. We didn't knew what "soon" meant, but now we can even see the update coming. The HTC Hero will get Android 2.1 update until the end of June. That's way sooner that we would have expected. As a tip, back-up all your data, right as you should do at any kind of update, because this new version will clean all the data that are not on your SD card. There are not anymore informations, we don't know what Android 2.1 will come with for the Hero version, but developments are expected soon.

The HTC Hero is the third smartphone manufactured by HTC using Android as operating system. It has a 320x480 screen, 3.2 inch HVGA LCD, 5.0 MP camera with autofocus, multi-touch capacitive touchscreen display, volume controls, ambient light sensors and digital compass. Is powered up by a 528MHz Qualcomm processor, packs 288MB RAM and 512 MB ROM. The flash memory is 256MB and the phone can carry up until 32GB on the microSD slot. There is also Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and aGPS.

Chart

A chart with timelines for operating system updates is been made available today, as you can see. The big questions of the day is why CLIQ users will not have Android 2.2 support this year. There is going to be Android 2.1 update in Q2 of this year, which means soon (and everybody knew that there is going to be an update soon), but it remains the same question. On this chart there are not phones which will get Froyo update this year at all.

If the CLIQ will get the Android 2.1 update soon, then the things are not so good for Backflip and DEXT users. They will have to wait until Q3 of this year to get the new operating system.

The Backflip is a touchscreen smartphone released by AT&T in march. It has a 320x480 HVGA display, qwerty keyboard, it is powered up by a 528MHz processor and packs 256MB RAM. The CLIQ (known as DEXT outside US) is powered up by a 528MHz Qualcomm processor, has 256MB RAM and sliding qwerty keyboard.

Wunder Radio

Didn't you like the options available in the Android Market in matter of straeming audio? Well, then you have another application you can use now, called WunderRadio. The streaming applications is very popular on iPhone, BlackBerry and Windows Mobile. With this new application you can access more than 50.000 radio stations from AOL Radio to BBC, national and international. You will be able to search between lots of stations.

If you want to buy the application it will be $6.99, which is a more expensive than other streaming apps available in the Android Market, but you won't have to face a recurring fee. You can grab it from here. WunderRadio was initially developed to play local weather radio streams, but evolved to include many other stations.

HTC Legend

We reported before there will not be too much to wait until Google will release Android 2.2, and now the news is confirmated. Besides Nexus One, which was already confirmated, we've heard news about two other devices. It seems HTC will deliver Froyo to HTC Desire and HTC Legend within the next two weeks! After giving a taste of Froyo on Desire and Legend, HTC wants to deliver the new operating system to several other handsets. The news come from a German site, and the translation says the update will come "in the next two weeks". This is pretty soon, isn't it?

Adobe also announced some time ago that they will send Adobe Flash 10.1 to several retailers, and that the new service will be available on some Android 2.2 handsets, such as Google Nexus One, HTC Desire, Evo 4G, Motorola Droid/Milestone and HTC Droid Incredible. Samsung Galaxy S may also be on the list, but is not for sure.

Wildfire

T-Mobile is shipping HTC Wildfire since this week, and Vodafone doesn't want to lots ground. The "Red" company started to ship HTC Wildfire after not managing to do it on 15th June, which was the first official date. THe handset can now be bought even for free with monthly plans starting from 20£. The device can be ordered from here, from the official page of Vodafone.

Wildfire is another smartphone developed by HTC Corporation, announced on 17 May 2010 and released this month. It is powered up by a 528 MHz Qualcomm processor, runs Android 2.1 Eclair as operating system and includes a TFT LCD capacitive touchscreen. There is also a 5MP camera with autofocus and LED Flash. The phone has been described as the "Mini HTC Desire". The screen is a 3.2 inch 240x320, and the phone packs 512 MB flash and 384 MB RAM. It supports up to 32GB on microSD and features Radio, social media integration, aGPS with turn-by-turn navigation and full Flash support.

Apps

Applications are one of the most important part of every smartphone, because when you buy a smartphone, you're not just thinking about calling and sending an SMS now and then, but also about apps. Some of the applications are free, some others are paid, but the prices are not so big. At least for Android. More than half of the apps for Android, Nokia and Palm are about $2, the ones from BlackBerry being $2.99.

Android offers 57% of its applications for free, and that's the most a phone producer offers, while most of them have around 25%. Besides Android, only Palm offers more than 33% free. Android Market is available in 46 countries, but only the users from 13 can download the apps for free, while only 9 countries offer the developers the possibility to distribute them.

HTC Desire

HTC said that they want to update every new device to Android 2.2 Froyo, and it seems they will really do it soon. Soon means by Christmans, but we all know there's a lot of work and there are lots of devices out there, so I think Christmas is an ok deadline. The HTC Desire is tipped to get the Froyo in August, for example. Anyway, it's very possible the owners of Legend or Wildfire (not high-end devices) to have to wait until the last month of this year to get it. They might even change their handsets until then...

Eric Lin, global PR and community manager at HTC said why is it going to last so much: "It takes time to port all of our applications over to Froyo and then make sure that it is running well on each of our devices. That's nor like a one week kind of project. We need to make sure that our applications are taking advantage of the Froyo features", said Lin. True, it takes, time. And I really understand them. Everybody expects to get updates over updates, but no one ever thinks of the work that is behind one update only.

Motorola Droid

Since the original Android 2.2 has lots of bugs, the Android hacking community thought of improving the software themselves. And they did. The hacked 2.2, considered bugless, was downloaded more than 40.000 times in a week only! Normally it's difficult to count how many downloads there are, because every hack is spreaded around on different websites. They decided to count the number of e-mails sent to the hackers. Which, usually, is not that big.

This time it proved to be a lot bigger. Also tracked by the bit.ly link spreaded on Twitter, they could count the number exactly: 37.642 exactly a week after the release. Considering the fact that there are way more Droids sold, around 40.000 does not seem too much, but remember this version is a hacked one and is spreaded by the word of mouth.

HTC Wildfire

Australia's largest phone carrier, Telstra, announced they will release HTC Wildfire in the Oceanic country starting soon. The phone will probably arrive in August and will feature the same specs as the smartphones released in Europe and US. People in Australia will be able to stay connected through the same HTC Sense.

Some of its feature include a 3.2 inch capacitive touch screen, a 5MP camera with autofocus and LED flash. The operating system is Android 2.1 with the latest versions of Sense. Some other specs include an optical trackpad for navigation and text editing and many other things.

Pricing hasn't been announced yet, but the press release says that Telstra will have exclusivity in Australia for the Wildfire.

Android Market

Android Market is set to reach an incredible milestone those days. Upon almost reaching 100.000 applications available to download, they've also reached 1 billion apps downloaded already. Sure, Google didn't confirmed yet, but there are enough sources on the internet who think Android Market surpasses 1 billion already. Google is probably waiting for the 100.000 applications to be available and then they will announce both things. Anyway, 1 billion applications is an impressive number, no doubt about the fact that they fight for supremacy with iTunes.

Android has become in the last quarter of 2010 the best sold operating system in the world, overcoming Nokia's Symbian. With almost 39 million handsets sold around the world in Q4, Android passes over Nokia, which stalls at a level of 31 million handsets sold in the same amount of time.

Android

Android is right now spreading around the world fastest than even the iPhone, so this is a remarkable achievement. The battle at the top is between Google, RIM and Apple, and it seems Google is taking over the mobile phone world. Nokia, on the other side, seems to lose a lot of ground - and fast. Apple and Android are growing quarter after quarter, while Nokia stalls or goes down. The Finnish producer's future ideas does not even seem interesting for the market anymore, so I can't see a very shiny future for them.

Google held an event today at their headquarters to show off the new Android operating system, codenamed Honeycomb 3.0. Few demos on the stage for the new OS were not enough for the guests, as Android engineering director Chris Yerga walks on the stage to show another new feature: the Android Market Webstore, which can be easily found here.

Android applications can now be purchased from the Android Market Webstore, while up to now the applications could only have been bought via a mobile phone running Google's operating system.

Android

Social media integration works well with the new Android Market, with users being able to share links to apps on Twitter. The market is now fully live, though in the beginning users could not log in. If you're running Android you should take a look at it.

Blogger app on AndroidBlogger (or Blogspot) - launched in 1999 - is the second most used blogging platform in the world, after Wordpress which, in the last years, had a blast. Nevertheless, Blogger is still used by millions and millions of users. Now with Google owning the business, they thought it would be appropriate to create a Blogspot application for their operating system, so that mobile phone users can post on their blogs without having to fully load the website.

You will need to have Android 2.1+ to use the application and you can grab it for free from the Android Market. Now there's not any excuse anymore from not blogging from wherever you are on Earth.

It may come as a surprise for some of us, or not, but Motorola cancelled the Android 2.1 update for the Cliq XT, which was planned to happen soon. The update was announced few months back and was even showed in the media. The community manager of Motorola stated in the press that though they tried their best, over the last months Motorola's developers did just not managed to create the perfect OS version for the Cliq XT. It's just not doable.

Motorola Cliq XT

Motorola users became pretty annoyed and went in on the official forums ragging around about not buying a Motorola device again. Total understandable considering the fact that some bought a Motorola because of the Android 2.1 update promise.

After the release of the Android Market Website in the beginning of this week, many Android users tried to download applications on their computers but couldn't, because the website generated an error saying that no phone is associated with the respective mobile phone. Well, now we solved it and we are glad to bring you the right way of doing it.

Android Market

First, login into your account, click on "My Account" and then on "Recover password". You will then have to enter your current password to prove it's you. Access the "SMS" section and click "Edit". If your phone number is already there, then you will have to remove it. If it's not there, you just enter it and save. If it is there, after removing it you will have to sign out, then sign in again, go back to the same menu and put your number there again. Save and log out. After logging it, that's it, the problem is solved.

Samsung Galaxy TapeThe new Samsung Galaxy "Tape" will get on the market as soon as Android 2.2 operating system will be launched, says a Vietnamesse tech website. We didn't knew too much about this new handset, but now there are also some specs available for us. The smartphone will be powered up by an AMR Cortex A8 processor, clocked at 1.2 GHZ (which can be a hit) and will have 16GB on-board storage. There's also the option for a microSD card slot (expandable to 32GB, but available until 48). The battery will be a 4.000mAh.

There are actually two mobile phones that will be released with this name, the second being probably called "Mini". The 7-inch variant will have, for sure, the Super AMOLED Display Samsung used us with. Rumours suggest there is also going to be a name change in the process, but because we don't know anything for sure, we'll leave it like that.

So, about the launch date, there's still nothing sure about when Android 2.2 will come, but as we heard and told you earlier on, Samsung Tape will come as soon as Froyo will be released.

T-Mobile PulseWe don't know too much about T-Mobile's Pulse, but if there is something to know, then we found out T-Mobile Hungary's smartphone got Android 2.1 update this week. If you want to update yourself the operating system, then you can download it directly from T-Mobile Hungary's website. There are also instructions there, so it will not be so difficult.

Don't forget! With any update you make, it's veri possible you will lose all the data you have. Don't forget to backup all your files before starting to update the operating system. And another thing: once you will update your smartphone to Android 2.1, you will never be able to revert to Android 1.5 again. We know you wouldn't do that, but who knows?

Huawei, the manufacturer of the phone, released it in Octomber 2009, and the phone features a 528 MHz processor, 192 MB SDRAM, 320x480 screen and a 3.2 MP camera, autofocus included. The phone has Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB micro-B and A-GPS.
