Earlier reports in regard to market share in India had shown that Xiaomi and Samsung were tied at the number one spot last quarter and now the unthinkable has happened; Samsung has been dethroned as the market leader of the smartphone business in India by the Chinese manufacturer! Not that it was unexpected though, given how rapidly Xiaomi has grown in India, especially after launching their own manufacturing and assembling plants in the country to reduce the expenses.

According to the data published by Canalys, Samsung's shipment of 7.4 million smartphones in Q4 2017 paled in comparison to Xiaomi's 8.2 million shipments in the country. This essentially puts Samsung in the second spot with 25% of the total market share and Xiaomi at the top spot with 27%. Vivo, Oppo and Lenovo took the following spots with significantly lower market shares. It should be noted that Samsung India's smartphone sector did show a 17% rise in growth, but it was just not enough to topple Xiaomi's meteoric rise to the top spot, all thanks to its superb range of budget and mid-range smartphones that offer better specs than any Samsung smartphone in the same price range.

We reported yesterday that the Note 8 had started receiving this month's security update and now another one of Samsung's Note devices are up on the list for the same. The Galaxy Note 5 is still one of the best Note devices in Samsung's arsenal and firmware version N920CXXS4CRA1 is all set to make it more secure than ever before.

In case you are wondering which regions are getting the update, it's a mouthful! Nevertheless, they happen to be mostly African and Middle-Eastern countries such as the UAE, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Nigeria, etc. The only South Asian country reported to get the January security update for the Galaxy Note 5 (SM-920C) is Pakistan. Wherever you are though, if the update is released in your region, you should be getting a prompt anytime now.

The update will fix six critical Android OS related security issues and multiple other less threatening vulnerabilities in the OS. As always, Samsung has also bundled in some of their own fixes, which happens to be 13 at the moment. Do check out today's daily firmware updates list if you want to manually flash the update without having to wait for the OTA push.

We are no longer surprised these days to see Samsung's latest flagship handsets being updated after low-mid range handsets form the company, because that's the route which the OEM had followed lately. However, we do not blame the company for this. As far as I can tell, it's simpler, faster and easier to roll out these security updates for the lower-end handsets and Samsung has decided that they will not hold up critical security updates for any of their devices, just for the sake of updating the costlier sets first. If that is truly the case then it's a noble approach and I can respect that. Keep in mind that this is speculation only and not exactly a fact!

As per the latest report by SamMobile, the update is only rolling out in France at the moment and the size of the file is huge! It's a 707MB update so make sure that you are connected to your Wi-Fi before starting the download. This almost makes you wonder what that patch brings alongside the 13 Samsung exclusive fixes and multiple Android OS related vulnerabilities. Interestingly, the source reports that the changelog doesn't mention anything about that at all, strangely enough! Do keep us updated if you see the January security patch making its way on devices outside France as well.
