Android updates are a bit of a mess, especially if you have not paid a very hefty price for a flagship device. In fact, it is even debatable whether it is Google or the OEM who should be held responsible for providing consumers with timely updates. In this state of confusion, a Dutch consumer protection group named Consumentenbond has held the OEM responsible for not providing timely updates to its devices, and the OEM in question is the market leader in Android Smartphones, Samsung.

The non-profit organization based in Netherlands had approached Samsung over a month ago on December 2, but without avail as Samsung had not reverted back to them with any substantial response. As a result, "injunctive relief proceedings" were issued against Samsung which alleges the company of employing immoral business tactics by keeping the consumers uninformed about updates and patches for the device that they are investing their money into.

Consumentenbond is demanding full disclosure about the plans of the company in regard to Android updates, firmware updates and security patches for its smartphones. In addition, a time period of two years from the date of purchase is demanded by the group, during which it must keep all its devices, including the old ones updated.

While this may sound like the right thing to do on paper, such a policy would definitely increase the cost of the mobile phones significantly. Also, Samsung would have to stop releasing so many devices in order to keep updates a real life possibility. The increased cost may hurt the budget segment, but a more select set of polished releases does not really sound like a bad idea. We will have to wait and see how the lawsuit pans out over time.

Samsung has pushed an unexpected and quick Android 6.0.1 update to the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge. Although it is still in beta, it seems like a huge update to bring practically all of 6.0.1's functionality to these two smartphones, in addition to a few ‘cherry on the cake' improvements for the Edge. If you're a beta user, you can enable this by going to Settings > About device > Software update.

Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow's most visible enhancement is the expanded set of emoji, and this beta release gets all of them to Galaxy S6 models. Functionality wise, we're seeing some fine-tuning and UX improvements in the notification panel. The Private Mode has got quick setting options that helps users navigate quickly. Users can now opt for "install overnight" feature which will automatically download and apply updates at night (2am to 5am) thereby minimizing usage disruption.

The settings for Edge panels have become highly accessible. In Android 6.0.0, to enable or disable various panels, user had to enter each specific panel's submenu and toggle them on and off. Now in the main menu there are checkboxes, to help you quickly select active panels. The "Tasks" Edge panel has become highly customizable and seems to work like a very stripped down version of Tasker, letting you set profiles based on situations/locations and quickly complete tasks through a set of assignable shortcuts. Still this is in beta, and there is no official word on stable release of Android 6.0.1 to the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge.

After Samsung launched its Android 6.0 beta program on two of its premier devices from 2015, people were curious whether or not some of the older 2014 models will receive the Marshmallow update. As it turns out, the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge are just the beta platforms for the Company to consolidate its Android 6.0 Marshmallow firmware, but certainly not the only ones who will get the update.

Historically speaking, Samsung always updates its major/flagship devices twice when it comes to big Android version updates. Therefore, the Galaxy S5 for example, should receive Android Marshmallow as its second update is still due. Our previous reports regarding the ongoing work on the Marshmallow firmware for S5 also confirms our educated guess. The Note 4, the Note Edge and the Galaxy S5 LTE-A among others should receive the same sometime in 2016.

Needless to say, the more recent devices launched in 2015 will also get Android 6.0 but the exact time for those updates are not yet clear. Unlike Nexus or Motorola devices, Samsung phones do not necessarily get the fastest updates because the company also needs to customize its own TouchWiz UI on top of the new Android version. The delay might irritate some users, but it is better to get a bug-free, solid version than a faster botched up update in our opinion.
