The SID or Society for Information Display Award is one of the most prestigious awards in the industry and thanks to their brand new quad-edge flexible OLED display technology, Samsung got it this year. Samsung had earlier won the Display of the Year Award from the SID back in 2013 and 2015 for its Super AMOLED display technology. The award was given to the South Korean company because of their technological prowess and the feature set which they displayed with the quad-edge flexible OLED display.

Although LG still maintains that curved displays are fragile and uncomfortable to hold, the SID award was given largely to Samsung because of the fact that the award winning curved displays are easier and more comfortable to hold than flat panels. Given the popularity and the apparent opinions of the experts, I think LG might need to rethink their decision to avoid curved displays. In other news, some rumors are predicting that the Google Pixel 2 could feature a curved display as well and we all know about the iPhone 8 OLED and its rumoured futuristic design.

They already have had the necessary FCC certifications and rumors are predicting that both the smartphones will be made official by Samsung anytime now. While the Galaxy J5 (2017) and Galaxy J7 (2017) will not be phones which will ever enter the US or European markets, they are a huge hit in the emerging markets of India, Pakistan and South Africa. On that note, let's take a look at what Samsung has in store for the fans of the series this year.

The design visually reminds us about the Galaxy A (2017) series. Of course, it will have more modest hardware specifications as compared to the mid-range A-series. If you are wondering what those specifications are, your guess is as good as mine. Nevertheless, let's hope that the 1080p display won't be exclusive to China this year around. Don't expect any AMOLED displays though as those are reserved for Samsung's higher end phones only.

If you are wondering who ZeniMax are and where did they come from, then let me enlighten you first with a bit of background info. ZeniMax is the company which had sued Facebook Oculus Rift for copyright infringement and had even won that lawsuit. They also own multiple gaming companies like id Software and Bethesda, which has given them access to multiple patents in the VR and gaming genre in general. Now that they have won their case and profited $500 million as penalty from Facebook, Samsung is next on their radar as they are alleging the Korean company for the following.

"(Samsung) continued to develop the Gear VR with full knowledge of ZeniMax's allegations and without obtaining any right or permission from ZeniMax to use any of its copyrights or other confidential information. "

Apparently, the codes used in the development of the Gear VR breaches copyright and enters the field of "trade secret misappropriation, unfair competition, and unjust enrichment," according to ZeniMax. We will have to wait and see how the court decides on this one.

You can now officially buy the Exynos variant of the Galaxy S8+ in the US and that's definitely good news for those of you who like Samsung's own 10nm Exynos 8895 chip more than Qualcomm's 10nm Snapdragon 835. Keep in mind though that both the chips provide near-identical performance when it comes to benchmarks and indiscernible performance when it comes to real life usage. Even then, it's worth knowing that the Exynos version has a more powerful GPU; the Mali-G71 MP20.

You can either buy the device unlocked at full price or from a few carriers that are offering monthly plans for the expensive smartphone, just like the Snapdragon variant. Unfortunately, since the SM-G955FD works only with GSM networks, it won't work on CDMA networks like the ones used by Verizon and Sprint. AT&T and T-Mobile users on the other hand will easily be able to sue the Galaxy S8+ Exynos variant on their networks.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 may sport a bigger display than the Galaxy S8+, but only just at 6.3-inches, according to a rumor on Weibo. Given that the S8+ already sports a humongous 6.2 inch display, we are not exactly complaining. However, this report does contradict previous reports which stated that the Note 8 will possibly sport a 6.4-inch display, which would have brought it to about the same size as the bezel-less Xiaomi Mi Mix from 2016.

The aspect ratio will remain the same at 18.5:9, as reported by the rumor. Although most other specifications mentioned by the rumor remains constant with what has so far been predicted by leaksters and enthusiasts around the internet, this particular report suggests that the Galaxy Note 8 will neither be the first, nor be the only Samsung device to sport a dual camera setup at its back in 2017. The Galaxy X foldable smartphone will allegedly debut before the Note 8 with a dual camera module. We are very apprehensive about the authenticity of this one though, because of two reasons. Firstly, the Galaxy X rumors have been going around forever, without any solid reason to believe that it's about to come out anytime soon. Secondly, it would make no sense for Samsung to debut its first dual camera setup ever on an experimental smartphone ahead of the immensely popular Note line-up. Stay tuned to YouMobile for more updates as they develop.
