The OnePlus 3 is an extremely well made smartphone, especially considering the price and it's about to get even better. Engadget has received confirmation from the head of OnePlus's software department, Brian Yoon, that a beta build for the OnePlus community will be ready by the end of November. What this also means is that the final build of Android 7.0 with the new Oxygen OS on top will be reaching OnePlus 3 smartphones all over the world via OTA by the end of 2016. Considering that 2016 only has one more month left in it, it would be safe to conclude that the final build will land on the OnePlus 3 next month.

OnePlus isn't a company that's known for providing speedy updates, but that seems to have changed thanks to a pretty big decision. They have merged the development teams responsible for maintaining and updating the HydrogenOS in China with their counterpart for the international OxygenOS to create one unified strong software department that will provide their customers with much faster updates. In fact, even the OnePlus 2 will receive the upgrade to Android Nougat, later in 2017.

It was made official in November that OnePlus would be updating its current-gen flagship handsets to Android Nougat by the end of 2016. OnePlus has kept true to that promise as Carl Pei (CEO of OnePlus) confirmed that the company has managed to release the final stable version of the OS on 31st December, 2016. The Oxygen OS v4.0 firmware based on Nougat 7.0 is now live and rolling out to OnePlus 3 and 3T smartphones around the world via OTA.

Some of the changes that this update will bring to the two devices include the following.
Improved shelf customization
Redesigned notification menu and settings overlay
The ability to reply to messages from the notifications menu
The ability to change icons in the status bar
Multi-window support
Support for custom DPI
Quick Launch for third-party applications

Available only to the OnePlus 3 earlier, the Open Beta 1 program is now also available to the OnePlus 3T, as announced by the OEM. If you want, the beta firmware is available for downloading and flashing manually onto your OnePlus 3/3T, but keep in mind that this will make your device a part of OnePlus's beta release cycle and the subsequent OTA updates will keep coming accordingly. If you don't want that then just wait a few days until the official, stable version arrives for your smartphone.

Smartphones are blurring the line between them and desktop computers nowadays and Xiaomi is about to blur that line even further with their upcoming Mi Note 2 Pro. According to a screenshot posted by AndroidPure, the upcoming handset from the Chinese manufacturer will sport beyond flagship grade specs like 8GB of RAM and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 CPU, clocked at 2.6GHz! The superphone will also have an in-built storage of 256GB and Google's latest and greatest Android OS Nougat will be running on it right out of the box. However, the only catch is that this "screenshot" could very well be a fake, much to our dismay.

As we now know that the previously rumoured launch date of the Mi Note 2 Pro (September 24) turned out to be wrong, it still is a bit of a mystery as to when it will actually be released. Since the Mi5s and Mi5s Plus was just launched in China, the date for the Mi Note 2 Pro's launch could be further away than rumors had originally predicted. In case you are not aware, these two are also packing the Qualcomm SD 821 chipset and enhanced camera capabilities that the OEM has declared to be better than even those sported by the flagship grade Samsung and Apple smartphones. Considering that the smartphones also cost about half of what an Apple iPhone 7 or Samsung Galaxy Note 7 would cost, things are getting really tight for the big boys.

Although we do not usually cover Xiaomi firmware, I have noticed that a large number of our readers also have shown some interest towards certain Specific Xiaomi devices. One of the most frustrating things about Xiaomi phones and tablets is the fact that the company often takes forever to update their smartphones and this year's Android Nougat wasn't an exception to that rule either. However, the good news is that thanks to GizmoChina, we have a list of Xiaomi devices today that will be getting the update to Android Nougat, albeit much later than expected.

List of smartphones from the Chinese manufacturer that will get updated to Android Nougat 7.0

Redmi 4X

Redmi Note 4X

Mi Max

Mi Note 2

Mi MIX

Mi 4C

Mi 4S

Mi 5

Mi 5s

Mi 5s Plus

Here's another much shorter list which consists of devices which will be receiving an upgrade to Android Nougat 7.1

Mi 6

Mi Max 2

Mi 5C

Redmi 4X

Strangely enough, the hugely popular Redmi Note 4 and the budget Redmi 4 are not included in this list! It would be interesting to see if they are included later on or if they get a direct upgrade to Android O.

Gooligan is a malware that hides within Android applications found mainly outside the Play Store, but it has recently been found that multiple apps available on the Play Store are also infected by it. The malware utilizes two vulnerabilities (Vroot and Towelroot) prevalent in pre-Marshmallow Android builds to root devices and gain access to email information, as well as authentication tokens, including those of your Google account. Gooligan then uses this unauthorized access to install applications from the Play Store itself. This of course, is done to increase the revenue associated with in-app ads. Additionally, the afflicted accounts are made to leave a 5-star review for the concerned app, without the user even being aware of what's going on.

If your device is running on Android Lollipop or an even lower version of the Android OS, Gooligan can affect your device. The secret malware was found by a cyber security firm called Check Point and they have since reported that Gooligan can access Gmail, Google Photos, Google Docs, G Suite, Google Play and Google Drive on all the 1 million plus devices that it affects right now. In response to the report, Adrian Ludwig, head of Android Securities, has explained that so far, the malware, which is a variant of the previously discovered Ghost Push, has not shown any intent to steal information and has instead been only associated with promoting in-app revenue through falsified reviews and unauthorized app installations. Google has since revoked all affected tokens and has banned multiple affected apps from the Play Store.

In the words of Check Point, "Gooligan potentially affects devices on Android 4 Jelly Bean and KitKat, and 5 Lollipop, which is over 74 percent of in-market devices today. About 57 percent of these devices are located in Asia and about nine percent are in Europe,"

In order to check and see if you are affected by Gooligan, enter your email address and see for yourself at: https://gooligan.checkpoint.com/

It's Christmas and we have less than a week left in the year now. Given that no new smartphones will be released this year anymore, let us take a quick look at the three absolute best smartphones that were launched in 2016. Let us know if you are using any of these beasts in the comments section below. Keep in mind that phones such as the Mi Mix were kept out of the list because they are simply not available anywhere outside China as of now.

OnePlus 3T

The OnePlus 3 was an excellent flagship device with the all-powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 SoC and a whopping 6GB of RAM, available at half the price of most flagships from big boys like Samsung or LG. The OnePlus 3T keeps everything that was brilliant about the OnePlus 3 and adds an even more powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 SoC, 13% more battery (3,450mAh), a much better front camera sensor and a 128GB option at a modest price of $439 (64GB).

Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge

The S7 and S7 Edge are a bit old now, but they still are among the absolute best that 2016 had to offer. The curved Quad High Definition Super AMOLED display on the S7 Edge is quite simply beautiful and arguably the best in the business.

Google Pixel Phones

When it comes to software and actual user experience, you just cannot beat the Pixel and the Pixel XL. Owners of these two smartphones will experience the epitome of what the latest Android OS has to offer. It also helps that these are powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 chip, beautiful AMOLED displays and Google Assistant; which is arguably the most enhanced virtual assistant ever to make a public debut.

Andy Rubin is one of the major names associated with the initial development of the Android OS and he even handled the OS for Google, before he left the company in 2014. After leaving Google, Andy Rubin started a company named Playground Global, which acted as a tech incubator. According to recent reports, he is associated in the development of an upcoming high-end smartphone. His second company, named Essential Products Inc. will be launching the smartphone in question, along with "a suite of consumer hardware products, including ones for the mobile and smart home."

Although much isn't revealed about this surprise smartphone in the making, but the report does mention that it will sport a bezel-less display, as well as a modular design similar to what we saw with the Moto Z or the LG G5. The magnetic connector used for the modularity is said to be propriety, although selective third party enhancements will be supported. A spherical high-resolution 360-degree camera will be one of the first modular upgrade options for the phone, developed by Essential Products themselves.

Other specifications that we know of include a ceramic back, a metal frame, a 5.7-inch or bigger pressure sensitive edgeless display and a release date that's set somewhere near the middle of the year. Did this get you interested or do you think it will be "just another smartphone?"

In a prediction made in 2013, Gartner had declared that the Windows Mobile OS will cross the iOS in terms of market share by 2017. It is 2017, the results are out and the Microsoft's Windows Mobile OS is currently sitting at the third position with 0.3% of the market share while Apple's iOS continues to occupy the second position with 17.9% market share. As always, Android sits at the top with an overwhelming 81.7% market share. Note that all of the statistics mentioned here are based on Q4 2016 results only.

It is actually quite sad to see that Blackberry's market share isn't even there. We kid you not! It's actually not there (0.0%) as you can see in the screenshot above. iOS managed to make a 0.2% improvement in a quarterly comparison with Q4 2015, while Android gained an additional 1% in the same comparison. As 99.6% of all new smartphones sold in the last quarter happens to be either an iPhone or an Android powered smartphone, it is pretty safe to say that unless something miraculous happens, this is how the market will stay like for the foreseeable future.

Saikat Kar (tech-enthusiast)

The Galaxy S5 was unveiled in 2014 as their flagship device by Samsung and back then, it was a pioneer in terms of the innovations that it brought to the Samsung smartphone line-up. It was the first Samsung smartphone ever to sport a heartbeat sensor, a fingerprint sensor, as well as having dust and water resistance capabilities. Nonetheless, it is over two year old now and smartphones do have a tendency to age fast. If you have a S5, then you would be pleased to know that Samsung has not forgotten about it yet. The latest reports suggest that after rolling Android M as an OTA update in South Korea earlier, the Korean manufacturer has now started to roll out the same updates for the S5 in Trinidad and Tobago as well.

As far as we know, the latest updates are being released for the SM-G900M and earlier, they were upgrading the SM-G900L in South Korea with Android Marshmallow. Provided that you are in Trinidad and Tobago, go to Settings, About device and Check for updates to see if the update has arrived on your Galaxy S5 yet. Once the 1.47GB package does arrive and you complete the update, the Android version on your phone should change to 6.0.1 and the firmware version to G900MUBU1CPC3.

If you are neither a resident of South Korea or Trinidad and Tobago, you will have to wait longer for the update unfortunately. If it is any consolation, the update is coming to your Samsung Galaxy S5 for sure, albeit a little later.

lollipop

Android Kitkat brought many storage problems and headache to the App developers, users complained about this many times and the only solution is to Root your phone to be able to transfer files from the Internal storage to the external storage (microSD cards). Google finally solved this problem with Lollipop.

microsd

Now with the release of the final version of Android 5.0 Lollipop, new APIs were added to allow apps to request full access to directories owned by other providers. These APIs have been improved to offer more capabilities than before, and they do it in a very user-friendly and secure way. You'll no longer have to Root your phone to access/modify your microSD data.

Here's what Google Developers said about lollipop shared storage devices:

Richer access to secondary shared storage devices
In KitKat we introduced APIs that let apps read/write file in app-specific directories on secondary storage devices, such as SD cards.
We heard loud and clear that developers wanted richer access beyond these directories, so in Lollipop we added the new ACTION_OPEN_DOCUMENT_TREE intent.
Apps can launch this intent to pick and return a directory from any supported DocumentProvider, including any of the shared storage supported by the device.
Apps can then create, update, and delete files and directories anywhere under the picked tree without any additional user interaction. Just like the other document intents, apps can persist this access across reboots.
This gives apps broad, powerful access to manage files while still involving the user in the initial selection process.
Users may choose to give your app access to a narrow directory like "My Vacation Photos," or they could pick the top-level of an entire SD card; the choice is theirs.

Today, Wall Street Journal reports that Microsoft will make an investment in, the Android ROM developer company, Cyanogen Inc. The Redmond giant is expected to become a minority investor in a $70 million round of equity financing.

The latest round of funding is said to value Cyanogen Inc. in the high hundreds of millions. Spokespeople from both Microsoft and Cyanogen Inc. declined to comment on the matter.

Cyanogen made quite a splash a few days ago when the company's CEO Kirt McMaster told an audience in San Francisco that the company wants to take Android away from Google. The ambitious startup plans to create a version of Android, which isn't dependent on Google Play apps and services.

Internet usage has become prevalent on smartphones, and last January Google introduced Data Saver mode to tackle the bandwidth usage. After getting competition from fellow browser Opera, it's boosting its compression capabilities.

Google announced on Monday that it's updating Android's Chrome Data Saver mode to decrease user data consumption by up to 70 percent.

Google accomplished this by "removing most images when loading a page on a slow connection," product manager Taj Oppenheimer reported in the blog post. If Chrome finds a weak connection, it'll load a page without images leading to less data consumption. Users can can also choose to load all the pictures, or select individual pictures to load.

These updates will be first available in India and Indonesia, with rest of the countries to follow. While there are plethora of cheap and reliable sub-$150 smartphones available in India and Indonesia, legacy telecommunications infrastructure has made some users to use 2G connection. Whether the improved functionality will be pushed Chrome's iOS app or not, is yet be revealed.

Data compression is a hot business in India and parts of Asia, with Opera announcing a deal last month to make the Opera Max data saving app come pre-installed on smartphones from Samsung, Xiaomi, Acer, Hisense and more. Samsung was the early adopter and came up with the app before others. It launched and promoted its On series in India focusing on the data-compression technology.

Data Saver mode can be accessed under Settings → Advanced → Data Saver.

The beta version of the Chrome browser often brings unique features to its Android users and this time around, they have introduced something that is sure to become an instant fan favourite. If you update your Chrome Beta to the latest version 54, it will now be able to play YouTube in the background. Prior to the update, videos would pause the moment you exited the app, like it does on most browsers. Post the update, a play/pause button will appear in your notifications panel on exiting the Chrome Beta browser, which you can then use to continue playing the video in the background, while accessing other apps on your device. Needless to say, users who largely listen to audio content on YouTube will particularly appreciate this feature.

If you are streaming music from a website on the Chrome Beta Browser, it will continue to play in the background on exiting, just like a dedicated music streaming application. Even though this is exciting news, there's a high chance that this feature will be excluded in the next update unfortunately. Let's not forget that playing videos in the background is a feature of YouTube Red, which is a paid subscription based service. As this free feature makes paying for the same thing on the YouTube app unnecessary and both are owned by Google... you can do the math.

Chrome on Android has really come a long way since its release back in 2014. 22 versions have been created, each one more capable than the previous and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich was the scene, on which everything started.

The team behind Chromium, the open-source project which powers the development of the Chrome browser, has announced that it is leaving behind the software's original Android 4.0 home, which will no longer be supported after version 42.

The team's motivation for this decision is more than justifiable bringing new features to old platforms simply takes too much time, due to increasing problems and significantly hinders future development. So, when you think about it, the move is all for the best. Here's the official statement from the Team blog:

"In the last year, we've seen the number of Chrome users running ICS drop by thirty percent. Developing new features on older phones has become increasingly challenging, and supporting ICS takes time away from building new experiences on the devices owned by the vast majority of our users. So, with Chrome's 42nd release, we'll stop updating Chrome on ICS devices. After Chrome 42, users on ICS devices can continue to use Chrome but won't get further updates." - Chromium Team Official Blog

chrome

Google Chrome's team is planning on using on using Microsoft's Pointer Events API and integrating it into the browser, this will make the scrolling on all Android smartphones more smoother than now.

One major benefit of the smoother scrolling. Some of the other browsers that employ Pointer Events like Firefox and IE, run smoother than Chrome. The Chromium team listened to feedback from web developers, framework authors, and other browser vendors who said that Pointer Events would be a great addition to the platform.

The currently used Touch Events API is not going to disappear, and with IE supporting both, it is possible that Chrome also will continue using Touch Events while starting to implement the Pointer Events API. The bottom line is that Chrome users will soon have a better scrolling experience.

Official Chromium Team Blog

"Pointer Events offers some technical advantages over the existing use of Touch Events and Mouse Events. Most notably, pointer event listeners never block scrolling, and so replacing all touch event handlers with pointer event handlers will address the main longstanding source of scroll-start jank we see on Android (irrespective of whatever scheduler improvements we're able to make to better prioritize input handling)...Pointer Events has pretty broad support, but we have some outstanding concerns with the existing API which probably cannot be addressed without a non-trivial breaking change. The key outstanding challenge is to try to identify a design which addresses our concerns without seriously breaking websites which support the existing API. We will of course work closely with the other vendors to try to find a design we can all agree to implement consistently." - Rick Byers, Chromium Team

Android

Google Chrome is now the No.1 browser in the Play Store as the most popular web browser in the Android Platform. Chrome has just officially reached more than "1 BILLION" installs on the Play Store.

While induction into this elite group hasn't been quite as impressive since membership hit the double digits, Chrome is among the first of Google's apps that doesn't owe all of its success to pre-installs. The first beta release of Chrome came in early 2012 and only supported Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. At this time, ICS was still new and only a handful of devices were shipping with it. There were still brand new phones launching with Gingerbread.

Chrome play store

It wasn't until several months later that Chrome would come pre-installed for the first time on the original Nexus 7 running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Most manufacturers continued to stick exclusively to their own "stock" browsers until 2013, when many of them started to include both two browsers.

We gathered everything you need to know about Marshmallow in one place... Here's the Full official change-log and Key features list of the Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

Marshmallow

Android Marshmallow Key Features

Contextual Assistance
- Now on Tap: get assistance without having to leave what you're doing-whether you're in an app or on a website. Just touch and hold the home button.
- Do more with your voice. Now you can have a dialogue with any of your apps that support the new voice interaction service. For example, if a user says "play some music on TuneIn," TuneIn will respond by asking "What genre?".
- Direct Share: a fast and easy way to share to the right person in the right app.
Battery
- Doze: when your device is at rest, Doze automatically puts it into a sleep state to increase your standby battery life.
- App Standby: no more battery drain from seldom used apps; App Standby limits their impact on battery life so your charge lasts longer.
- USB Type C support: Quickly transfer power and data all through the same cable. Lightning fast charging gives you hours of power in just minutes.
Privacy & Security
- On an Android Marshmallow device, apps designed for Android Marshmallow only ask for permission right when it's needed. You can deny any permission and still continue to use the app.
- Advanced controls to turn permissions on or off for all your installed apps.
- Verified boot: when your Android device boots up, it will warn you if the firmware and Android operating system have been modified from the factory version.
- Use fingerprint sensors to unlock your device, make purchases in Google Play, authenticate transactions in apps, and pay in stores.
Android Runtime ("ART")
- Improved application performance and lower memory overhead for faster multi-tasking.
Productivity
- BluetoothTM stylus support, including pressure sensitivity and modifier keys.
- Improved typesetting and text rendering performance.
- Smarter text selection, built-in undo/redo, and text actions closer to your fingers.
- Text selection actions such as a new Translate option that lets you translate text from one language to another right on the spot. (Note: requires Google Translate app installed)
- Save paper with duplex printing support.
System usability improvements
- App links: enables installed apps to automatically handle their web URLs so you can jump right into the app, rather than the mobile web site, as appropriate.
- Easily toggle and configure Do Not Disturb from quick settings.
- If someone calls you twice within 15 minutes, you can choose to allow the call to ring through while Do Not Disturb is enabled.
- Use automatic rules to enable Do Not Disturb for as many custom time blocks as you like or around events on your calendar.
- Simplified volume controls allow you to manage notification, music, and alarm volumes easily from anywhere with the touch of your volume keys.
- Streamlined Settings let you manage an app's settings all in one place, from battery and memory usage, to notifications and permissions controls.
- Google Now Launcher app list refreshed with search, fast alphabetic scrolling, and predictive -- App Suggestions.
Connectivity
- More power efficient Bluetooth Low Energy ("BLE") scanning for nearby beacons and your accessories.
- Hotspot 2.0: Connect to compatible Wi-Fi networks seamlessly and securely.
- Bluetooth SAP: Make calls from your carphone using your phone's SIM.
- Portable Wi-Fi hotspot now supports 5GHz frequency bands.
Expandable storage
- Flex Storage: makes using SD cards or external storage devices as encrypted expanded storage for your apps and games on Android Marshmallow a whole lot easier.

Device setup and migration
- Easily transfer your accounts, apps and data to a new device.
- During setup, you can add an additional personal or corporate email account (e.g., IMAP)
- Auto backup for Apps: seamless app data backup and restore.
- Backup/restore of additional system settings such as your Sync settings, preferred apps, Do Not Disturb settings, Accessibility settings and enabled IMEs.
Media
- MIDI support: create, consume, and perform music using your Android device with USB MIDI devices, MIDI over BLE, and software-based MIDI devices.
Internationalization
- Android is now available in 74+ languages with 6 new additions: Azerbaijani, Gujarati, Kazakh, Albanian, Urdu, and Uzbek.
Android for Work
- When receiving calls or viewing past messages, you can now see the full work contact details even if you're not logged into your work profile.
- Work status notification: A status bar briefcase icon now appears when you're using an app from the work profile and if the device is unlocked directly to an app in the work profile, an alert is displayed notifying the user.
- VPN apps are now visible in Settings > More > VPN. Additionally, the notifications that VPNs use are now specific to whether that VPN is configured for a work profile or the entire device.

Android Marshmallow Change-log

#1: Easy word selection and floating clipboard toolbar
"Finally," someone in the crowd at Google I/O shouted when software head David Burke announced that Android M brings improved word selection and a new clipboard toolbar. Currently, you have a bar of obscure icons at the top when selecting text and that is changing to a floating window that appears alongside your selection (a much more logical place) and features clear and concise buttons rather than obscure icons: 'cut', 'copy', and 'paste' is what the buttons say. Word selection is now also improved as you can select jumping word by word, or character by character.
#2: Fingerprint sensor support
Finally, Google is building a standard API for fingerprint support that - it seems - apps can make use of, and it will be a unified way for phone manufacturers to encode support for fingerprint scanners, knowing that they are compatible with the new Android Pay NFC-based system.
#3: Direct Share
Sharing on Android is by far the best of any mobile operating system, but it's still far from perfect. When you have a bunch of apps installed, you end up with a huge list of sharing options that is extremely frustrating to operate. Direct Share in Android M fixes that by prioritizing and putting first the options that you use the most and that are the most logical for that particular item.
#4: Doze
Doze is a deeper state of sleep, especially useful for Android devices like tablets that spend a lot of time laying idle on a night stand, only to be picked up at night. By hibernating apps and allowing only for alarms and priority notifications to stay awake, Android M brings significant improvements to standby battery life, extending it up to twice on a Nexus 9 unit that Google tested.
#5: Simplified volume controls
If it ain't broken, don't fix it. Google, however, did try to fix the non-broken volume controls in KitKat, and that resulted in an outcry from users frustrated with volume controls in Android 5 Lollipop. So, it was time to fix what has been fixed: volume controls are now again granular, with separate control for ringer volume, alarm volume, and media volume. Finally!
#6: Google Now 'On Tap'
Google Now is getting contextually aware in Android M. What does that mean? With the new Google Now 'On Tap' feature, your voice searches will be recognized contextually within an app. Say, you have the music player on, you can fire up voice search and ask something like "what year was this recorded?", and the search will understand that 'this' refers to the song. Neat!
#7: Auto backup for apps (link to Android developers)
The Android system in M will automatically make a full data backup and restore for apps. This is something that is done for apps targeting M by default, with no need for developers to code in anything. If users delete their Google accounts, their backup data is deleted as well. Automatic backups happen every 24 hours, when the device is idle, charging, AND connected to a Wi-Fi network. This way, when you upgrade to a new device, or wipe clean a device, you can restore easily and pain-free.
#8: Contextual assist framework
#9: Secure token storage APIs
#10: Setup wizard: IMAP sign-in
#11: App Standby
#12: Flex storage

According to a tweet from the usually reliable leakster @LlabTooFeR.  Google seems to have presumably started the rollout of Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow for its Android One range of smartphones.

Early reports indicate that Android 6.0.1 does not really bring anything new. The update probably only contains some bug fixes and stability improvements.

According to AndroidBeat, Cherry Mobile G1 smartphone in the Philippines is among the first Android One devices to receive the Android 6.0.1 update.

Apparently smartphone makers are planning to ship the Android 6.0 Marshmallow updates to their devices and these news are getting leaked. Yesterday we came across an alleged roadmap for Lenovo, and before that day HTC's plans also got out, and now according to a post by SamsungViet.vn, Samsung's plans are also leaked as well.

12 devices have been mentioned in that list and those are ones which will receive the update in Q1 2016, and with four more slated to receive the update in Q2 2016. We're not quite sure if this list is final and the devices mentioned in the list are the ones are the confirmed for now.

Anyway it lists devices like the Galaxy Note 5, Note Edge, Note 4, Note 4 Duos, S6 Edge+, S6 Edge, S6, S6 Duos, S5, S5 Neo, and the S5 LTE-A as being the handsets that will receive the update in Q1 2016. The Galaxy Alpha, Tab A, Tab S2 9.7, and the Tab S2 8.0 are supposed to receive the update in Q2 2016.

It's difficult to confirm the authenticity of the list but it does seem to be in accordance with another leaked plan from November. It is also in sync with an earlier report in August that said Samsung devices would get the update in 2016.

Although there hasn't yet been any official confirmation to this, reports suggest that the Galaxy J3 (2016) and the Galaxy S5 mini will receive their Android M updates sooner than later. In fact, the update has been due for a while now as the versions released in the US and South Korea were launched with Android Marshmallow 6.0 right out of the box.

The Galaxy S5 Mini was released way back in 2014 and back then, it was launched with Android KitKat 4.4.2 inside. It was upgraded to Lollipop 5.1.1 by Samsung in 2015 but there is one more major upgrade that the handset is entitled to. According to one of SamMobile's reports, the Marshmallow firmware for the S5 mini was seen at the Wi-Fi Alliance recently.

All its major smartphones from 2014 - 2016 have either been already updated to Android 6.0.1 by the Korean OEM or is in the process being updated, but one cannot help but feel that some of them are arriving a bit later than they should have. The Galaxy Alpha, Galaxy A5, Galaxy A7 and Galaxy A8 are some of the other models that are still awaiting an upgrade to Marshmallow and hopefully, that wait won't stretch much longer than it already has.

Users that chose AT&T as their carrier while buying the HTC One M8 and HTC One M9 were left a little disappointed in the fact that they had not yet received the Android M update on their smartphones. Given that Verizon, T-Mobile and Sprint had already released the update for their respective versions of the two phones, the disappointment is understandable. However, this was expected as HTC had earlier made it public that Marshmallow will reach the M8 and the M9 on AT&T, later than their counterparts on other carriers.

Nonetheless, we have good news for you because Mo Versi (VP of Product Management, HTC) just confirmed on Twitter that both the smartphones will begin receiving the much awaited upgrade, starting today. Although the OTA update package won't reach every phone at the same instance, it is only a matter of time before it does reach all the HTC One M8 and One M9 handsets that are on AT&T. Google introduced the "Adoptable Storage" feature with Android Marshmallow back in May, 2015. However, there is still a bit of confusion regarding how the option works exactly. Let us try and clear the smoke here.

What is it?

The Adoptable Storage feature allows you to turn a micro-SD card into the internal storage of your phone. Once you do this, the memory card will well and truly be adopted as a non-removable part of the smartphone, after being reformatted as a 128-bit AES encrypted EXT4 drive. Imagine the 16GB internal storage of your smartphone which had previously kept your app installations at check, replaced with the 64GB memory of your SD card.

How to do it?

As soon as you enter your memory card into a device that is running Android M (Some devices do not support the feature), you should see the following prompt, "Set up SD card." Tap on it, select "Format as internal storage" and select "Erase & Format." Remember to read the warnings just as a precaution.

Can I switch back?

Yes, you can switch back to using your SD card as an external storage by reformatting the card in the same way as before, but this time as "Portable Storage." Do it from Settings >Storage >Select card >Format as external. Remember though that in doing so, all applications and files on that SD card will be lost.

Should you do it?

It depends on your needs really, but if you do choose to try it, make sure that the SD card is at least a Class 10 or UHS. There is a small possibility of your card failing and a rather large one of your phone becoming slower than before. Most cards were not built to handle the high rate of caching, reading and writing data that an internal storage drive must handle. Even though Google has taken measures to prevent this by reducing the indexing operations, the load will still be heavy. Therefore, the advice is, do it if you have low in-built memory, but if you already have sufficient space on the internal storage, it might not be a bad idea to avoid it for now.

If you are in Europe and you are still using a Samsung Galaxy Note 4, we have good news for you today. It is only a matter of time before you are notified that the much awaited Marshmallow update has finally arrived on your Galaxy Note 4. The SD 805 powered N910F is among the last of the Note 4 variations to receive the major upgrade as Samsung looks to finish off its Marshmallow update schedule.

As expected, the update comes in a large OTA package of roughly 1.3 gigabytes. While all of the N910F models will be upgraded to Android version 6.0.1 post installation, the build number will vary depending on the particular country as well as the carrier. So far, news of the update's arrival has been reported mainly from the UK, Ireland, Germany, Austria and Hungary. We expect similar reports from the other European countries to turn up soon.

The Note 4 will see significant improvements in speed and stability, along with a more up to date S-Pen interface. As was seen with similar updates for other versions, the screen off memo feature from the Note 5 will now be available on the Note 4 also. Expect Android M to arrive on the N910F with all its bells and whistles, like Dozing, customizable app permissions and a redesigned, lighter TouchWiz.

If you own a Samsung Galaxy S5 G906S, your smartphone is about to receive an upgrade to Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. The update package should arrive on your smartphone via OTA soon and it is sure to bring in a number of improvements and changes along with it.

The LTE-A G906S is actually a more powerful version of the regular Samsung Galaxy S5, thanks to an extra gigabyte of RAM. The handset is powered by the old but still powerful, Snapdragon 805 SoC and it is exclusively available in South Korea only. It was launched in Samsung's own nation just a few months following the launch of the original Galaxy S5 in 2014.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 LTE-A G901F was dubbed as the S5 Plus and was made available for purchase in several European countries, as well as in Singapore. In case you are wondering whether or not an Android Marshmallow update has been released for the 901F, check your smartphone right now because that update was rolled out over a week ago in both Europe and Singapore. Check out our firmware section for easy access to all the latest firmware updates right now.

It seems Verizon has been developing Android Marshmallow update in the background. They are rolling out the latest version of Marshmallow for the LG G3 and flagship G4, as well as HTC's One M9 devices. Those where were eagerly waiting for this update can now enjoy the new Android flavor.

The Over the Air notification will connect with your device within a few more days. Then you'll be able to continue with the install. As usual your device needs to have at least 50 percent of full charge, and Wi-Fi connection is always recommended. Apart from that you should also keep a backup of your important data. This is a good way to avoid data loss if anything goes wrong while updating the smartphone.

There is an option to get the update manually. To go ahead with this, open up the Settings app on the LG G3 or G4, then browse through the following:

About Phone → Update Center → System Updates → Check for Update. In case of the HTC One M9, use the following steps: Settings → System Updates → HTC software update → Check Now.

Following Verizon, today T-Mobile is also about to release Marshmallow support to users of the HTC One M9. But, there is no info as of now on whether it's still on track. T-Mobile's LG G4 Marshmallow upgrade was initiated few week back, while the G3 is still in the waiting list.

If you own a Galaxy Note Edge (unlocked) in Europe, the chances are that you will soon be notified about the much awaited Android M 6.0.1 update. According to Sam Mobile, the 1.4GB update will change your handset's firmware build number to N915FYXXU1DPE1, along with installing the SMR patches for May.

We also have good news for our readers in China because the Samsung Galaxy A9 just started receiving the upgrade to Marshmallow as well. The A9 is the first in Samsung's A-series to receive the update so far. After downloading and installing the file, you can check from settings to see the firmware version changed to A9000ZCU1BPE2 and the base Android version changed to 6.0.1 Marshmallow.

The Blackberry "Priv" may not have been a good name to be honest, but the manufacturer was certainly ahead of many greater and better names in the industry when it rolled out the Marshmallow update to the Priv before many. The latest update released is a humongous 1.8GB file that will upgrade the handset to Marshmallow beta. The STV100-1, STV100-3 and the STV100-4 models in the applicable geographical areas are eligible for the upgrade as of now.

Android M

Android M is just around the corner and as its announcement nears, and rumors about more and more plausible features of the platform's next version come to surface each and every day. We already have a pretty good understanding of what Android M is going to be all about, but we are certain that Google has a lot of hidden functionalities hidden up its sleeve.

One of these might be granular, user-manageable app permission controls. All versions of Android after 4.3 Jelly Bean have allowed users to grant or revoke app permissions after they've installed a given app, but this functionality is deeply hidden in the OS itself and can't be accessed without a third-party app, with the most popular being App Ops (requires root for certain versions), making it a bit tricky to access it.

Android M

Android M might finally bring this undoubtedly handy feature up front and allow users to manage permission to their heartfelt content. There might be a dedicated menu in Settings that deals with app permissions. Also, it's rumored that on the next versions of Android, you won't need to grant various permissions before you install an app from the Play Store, which is a slightly cumbersome task that usually requires you to tap "yes" in a handful of dialogs.

Android M is now official and it will be all about the user experience

First and foremost, it is already being perfectly clear to us that Android M will be largely focused on the user experience instead of major UI design overhauls, like was the case with Android Lollipop. The very first feature announced on stage at I/O 2015 were changes to app permissions - a seemingly unimportant aspect of Android, but one that we clash with on a daily basis. In Android M, which will have its own developer preview available as Lollipop did, users will have to battle with, and okay, permission requests much less often. Why? Because app permissions will be granted only once, instead of every time you install an app. For example, if you want to send a voice message through Whatsapp, you'll only have to agree to grant the app the permission once, and will never be asked to allow microphone usage in apps again. The above will apply to all other categories of permissions, which have been simplified to be more understandable than before - so things like 'Camera' and 'Location'.

Since you may want to revoke a permission from an app at a later time, you'll be able to do so through a menu in the settings, which will let you to control whether all or select apps have access to a certain category of permissions.

Android Pay and native fingerprint scanning support

Android Pay

Another major announcement has to do with a new service alike to Apple Pay. Called Android Pay, it's Google's reboot of Wallet, allowing for mobile payments within stores. As you can imagine, it'll use NFC to communicate with terminals. On top of this, Android M is also introducing native support for fingerprint scanners, so manufacturers will no longer have to bake in support themselves  at least unless they want to. Coupled with Android Pay, it's obvious that Google is getting really serious about mobile payments.

Chrome Everywhere

Android M

Android M is now official and it will be all about the user experience.

If you're big on reading through Facebook, you will likely have noticed that the app no longer sends you off to do your thing with the help of third-party browser, and instead does everything within Facebook. This very same type of functionality is coming to apps (Pinterest being confirmed), allowing third-party developers to bake in such functionality within their apps. The heavy-lifting will be done with Chrome, though the interface will remain consistent with the app's design.

Why you should care? Because this implementation will allow apps to pre-fetch content before you even open it, so load times will be lower than ever.

Android M "Dozing"

Dozing

Seeing how battery life continues to be an overarching issue with smartphones, it only makes sense that a major update such as Android M will focus on this aspect of the experience as well. With M, Google is introducing 'dozing', a special mode that will only activate when your device's various sensors determine that your device is not being used (say, it's just standing on your desk), and enter an even deeper state of sleep. Thankfully, dozing won't stop your alarms and priority notifications from reaching you.

The results? Google claims that an identical setup with Android M manages up to x2 the standby time of a device on Android Lollipop. If true, dozing truly is a big deal.

On a related note, Google has made its support for USB Type C charging ports public, meaning that we can expect more such devices to creep up on us rather soon. The end of failed attempts at connecting your device is in sight, people!

The small things

Not every Android M feature is as noteworthy as Android Pay or better power management, yet the smaller things do make life easy (or a living hell). Two such examples are sharing content on (stock) Android, and volume control.

Direct share

android m

While sharing various types of content has been core to the Android experience, one could (successfully) argue that the implementation has been in need of a serious improvement for a while. Not only are we bombarded with tons of apps we can share content to, but many devices don't really learn from your usage habits.

Seeing as Google is pitching Android M as all about the user experience, it makes sense that it worked on that. With Android M, your device will finally make sense of how and who you share with, allowing for ever smarter suggestions next time around. So if you constantly send over content to your girlfriend, your Android M-toting device will know that you're most likely to share with her again in the future. So she'll be your number one option.

This feature has been available in proprietary, Android-based UIs, but it's good to see Google is both paying attention and willing to implement smart ideas into Android.

Finally! Volume control by category

Another exceedingly smart feature available with select manufacturer UIs, and unavailable with Android Lollipop, is volume control by category. This means that if you wish to change the volume for notifications and alarms, but not music and your ringtone, you could only do so whilst in an app the controls this category of sound. So the media controller was only available when in a music app. With Android M, this will finally change, as the volume bar will now include the sliders for all groups.

Android M Logo

Google's new Android M Developer Preview is Now Available for download (on Nexus 5, 6, 9 only) for devs to start optimizing their apps to make them fully ready for launch when Android M launches on retail devices at the end of Q3 2015, and while we're all busy flashing the build to our Nexus devices, we noticed Google gives a very detailed break-down of all the new features in Android M.

Apart from the 6 key improvements in Android M - app permissions, web experience, app links, mobile payments, fingerprint support, and power and charging - there is a lot of interesting stuff that Google just couldn't show at the event, or it would have become a marathon for the viewers.

Android M Full Change-log

By hybernating apps and allowing only for alarms and priority notifications to stay awake, Android M brings significant improvements to standby battery life, extending it up to twice on a Nexus 9 unit that Google tested.

Android M

Google already announced the Android M major release. However, this is just a developer preview which has very few UI changes and some other unstable new features that still needs lots of testing and developing. Google made a schedule for Android M releases during the I/O event.

Android M

According to the official schedule (pictured above), Google is going to release 3 Developer Previews in the next 3 months. The Android M Official final release will be during the end of the 3rd Quarter (Q3,2015), still no exact date confirmed yet. By the final release Android "M" will be given a Name like "K = KitKat , L = Lollipop"... it might be Muffins, M&M's, Milkshake... etc.

Android M

Sense 7, TouchWiz, Bravia Engine... All the major Android manufacturers already sporting some kind of theme support, it was a bit logical for Google to bake in a similar functionality in Android OS itself, which will make it even easier for willing manufacturers to embrace theme support in their custom skins.

From the looks of it, Android M, which is currently internally known as Macadamia Nut Cookie, might be the first release of the OS that will come with baked-in theme support (we are not talking about the already-present interface themes, but of full-blown, interface-wide themes).

Android M themes

It seems that Android M has adopted Sony's RRO (Runtime Resource Overlays) commits, which means that native theme support is at least supported.

The well-hidden theme support in the M Developer Preview was spotted by a user that has been meddling with the Layers Manager app. Reportedly, the latter has allowed the user to try a few themes on a rooted Android device. It is still pretty limited at this point, as we are, after all, dealing with a developer preview, The final Android M version may fully support themes.

Android M

When Google's Android M was first announced we all assumed that it will be version 6.0 build... as Android 4.3 is Jelly Bean (J), Android 4.4 is KitKat (K) and Android 5.0 - 5.1 is Lollipop (L).

Android M 5.2

Surprisingly, Android M will have version number 5.2 according to the latest speculations. What we have is a screenshot taken from the new, exclusive to Android M, feature called "demo mode" exclusive only to the 2nd developer preview release, which clears notifications, simulates a full battery, and generally make the UI presentable for snaps.

Android M 5.2

The important bit here is the clock, it shows 5:20. This is presumably for "Android 5.2" at least provisionally recall that all official Google press images for Nexus phones show the current version of Android in the clock, i.e. 4:40 for Android 4.4, 5:00 for Lollipop, and so on.

Looks like that Google won't be going so far to version 6.0 with this release as the changes are mostly minor and based on the previous Lollipop APIs with no Key major features available.
