HTC

Since launching the flagship One M9 smartphone earlier this year, HTC has been rather quiet. But according to company chairperson and CEO Cher Wang, there's more to come from the Taiwan-based firm later on in 2015, with a slew of new smartphones heading to the consumer market.

There's no doubt that the HTC One M9 is a great smartphone. The M9 ticks most of the boxes one would expect of a flagship device at this point. But with Samsung, the market-leader in terms of top-tier Droids, having really thrown down the gauntlet with its Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge, the One M9 has drawn some flak for being perhaps too similar to last year's One M8.

Given past release cycles, it's seemingly unlikely that HTC will drop another handset this year to equal or best the One M9 or the almost-identical One M9+. But according to DigiTimes, the company's CEO spoke of a "new series" of smartphones in the pipeline during a meeting of shareholders, although whether this will entail as few scattered handsets or an entirely new product line remains to be seen.

Last week, the HTC 850C was leaked, with the accompanying report indicating that it will be of the Desire variety and aimed towards the Chinese market. Given the inclusion of dual SIM slots, it would seem less than likely that the 850C will reach the Western market, and the same could be said of the Desire-esque HTC WF5W, which also emerged a short while ago. With a super-svelte design, though, the WF5W looks promising in terms of a new direction that HTC could take regarding the design of its smartphones, and as such, it'll be interesting to learn of what the company has up its sleeve.

We have an official confirmation from the president of Samsung Mobiles, Koh Dong-jin, that the flagship will start receiving its Android 7 updates by the end of 2016 or possibly even sooner. He specified the timeline as "two to three months," so that's November by latest. This is good news for owners and fans of the phablet, especially for those who expected the Note 7 to come preloaded with Android 7.0 right out of the box.

In the words of Koh Dong-jin himself, "It is very important for us to offer up-to-date information with the new OS, but what's more crucial is to build a stable and seamless platform for users. That's why we are planning to do enough beta testing before any OS updates." Perhaps this is the reason as to why the Note 7 came preloaded with Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow instead of Nougat like many rumors predicted it will. We do agree that it is better to take time in providing a less buggy and more stable experience to the users than just rushing out with a version of the latest OS that feels like a downgrade. However, with the LG V20 announced as the first smartphone to sport the seventh version of Android, Samsung better not delay it too much.

Samsung 2015 Tablet

Design and technological innovation coupled with ease of use make handheld devices, mainly smartphones and tablets, attractive for consumers. This, in turn, inspires manufacturers to explore newer avenues that help pack devices with innovative design and features. However, oftentimes closing the gap between imagination and execution has not been easy.

In terms of functionality, there's no information if Samsung will be adding new features to the software or just change it looks. Many users love Kies for its data backup skills and it's likely that the company plays it safe and just apply a refreshing coat of paint to the suite.

The results are in and Samsung is still the number one manufacturer and supplier of smartphones in the European region at the end of Q1, 2018, with Apple coming in second. Apparently, Samsung managed to ship 15 million units during the last quarter, while Apple managed to sell only about 10 million smartphones. At a time when smartphone shipments have fallen by as much as 6.3% (YoY comparison), it could have been commendable that the Korean company has still managed hold on to the number one position, had it not been for the fact that they have actually slipped by 15% from last year! Market share of Apple on the other hand, fell by 5.4%.

What is more interesting is the fact that even in a high-profile region like Europe, Chinese manufacturer Huawei has grown by a whopping 38.6% by shipping 7.4 million smartphones in the region during this quarter! Not that Huawei wasn't already a force to reckon with, it's just that the rate at which the company is growing in the international market is quite amazing.

There was a time when the only real competitor Samsung had was Apple, but those times have changed and they have changed a lot. Make no mistake, Apple is still Samsung's biggest adversary in many ways, but the Cupertino giant is no longer the only concern for Samsung as Chinese manufacturers like Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo are taking the market by storm by offering high-end hardware at competitive prices. Nevertheless, even amongst so much speculation, Samsung has managed to hold the number one position as the leading smartphone seller at the end of Q1 2018. The stats are not as impressive as they once were and in certain markets, Samsung has clearly lost a lot of business, but even then, the Korean MNC is still the global leader in total smartphone sales across the world. Check out some of the stats below, as presented by the analytics farm Counterpoint.

·         Samsung shipped a total of 78 (22%) million smartphones in this quarter, out of the 360 million total

·         Apple came second with 52.2 million (15%)

·         Huawei holds the third position with 39.6 million shipments (11%)

·         Apple remains the number one seller in North America (38%), with Samsung coming in at second (27%)

·         In Asia, Huawei, Xiaomi and Samsung are tied for the first spot with 13% each, while Apple has slipped into the second position with 12%

·         Samsung is the dominant smartphone seller in Latin America, Middle East & Africa and Europe with 37%, 28$ and 33$ of the market share respectively

Goodbye Evleaks, He was the one who first shared to the world, among other things, that Nokia is working on an Android phone, and it was he who showed us the first images of the Sony Xperia Tablet Z2. He gave us the first image of the HTC One M8 and was first to show the Nvidia Shield Tablet to the world. Most recently, he's been showing us a stream of images of the yet unannounced Samsung Galaxy F.

Evan Blass, the man behind the infamous Twitter channel, @evleaks, has been steadily supplying the phone industry with fresh leaks of images of yet unannounced devices. Tech journalists and phone manufacturers have been following his Twitter with equal eagerness in the past two years.

Evan however has just announced that he's about to retire @evleaks, which currently has about 187,000 followers. However he said that he's unable to properly monetize it and with his health progressively deteriorating, he feels like he needed to prepare better for the future.

It has become official news that the latest flagship ARM chips by Qualcomm will be powering a new range of Windows 10 PCs by the end of this year. However, Microsoft themselves may not be the ones to introduce them to the market, as was previously believed.

A new report suggests that Lenovo is also trying to bring forth its own range of SD 835-powered Windows 10 PCs and it may just beat Microsoft to it. However, there is no guarantee either that Microsoft won't be the one to reach the market first with their new series of Surface laptops. From the point of view of the customer though, it's always good to have more options, so we are not exactly complaining!

If you are interested in these upcoming laptops, know that they will be quite affordable as expected. However, the ARM-powered PCs will actually run on a cloud based Windows 10 OS, instead of a local installation like computers powered by Intel or AMD chips.

Android 7.1 is coming to your Nexus phone by the end of the month, albeit in the form of a Developer Preview. Now that Nougat 7.1 is confirmed by Google as the first maintenance release since it became available, we expect both new features as well as overall improvements.
The incremental update will add brand new features to Nougat like A/B system updates, support for image keyboards, Daydream, rounded icons and app shortcuts API access for developers. Unfortunately, Google Assistant won't be a part of this preview, unless you are using a Pixel phone. The virtual assistant will probably not be a part of even the final build on most smartphones for a while at least.

The Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P and the Pixel C will be the three devices that will be getting the Developer Preview this month. The Nexus 6, Nexus 9, Nexus Player and certain Android One phones will also be getting the final build, but Google hasn't mentioned them as eligible for the Developer Preview. The Pixel and Pixel XL on the other hand, are supposed to get exclusively updated to Android 7.1.1 (expectedly) or later in December.

LG G3

The LG G3 is going to get the Android 5.0 Lollipop Update by the end of this year, according to an LG representative for the Netherlands and Belgium cited by TechTastic. He didn't give a more specific time frame, as we suspect the company is going to make an official announcement regarding its update plans.

The LG G3 is probably going to be joined by the LG G Pro 2 since both are the company's flagships as of now. However, we suspect more devices will be blessed with Android 5.0 Lollipop goodness such as the LG G3 S, G3 Stylus, G2 and the mid-range L90 and L70.

We don't know yet how LG plans to alter its most recent Optimus UI to better suit the new spirit of Android. The company likes to add a lot of additional features, so it'll be interesting to see how it manages to incorporate them in a hopefully clean and useful fashion.
