Android Marshmallow Key Features

Contextual Assistance
- Now on Tap: get assistance without having to leave what you're doing-whether you're in an app or on a website. Just touch and hold the home button.
- Do more with your voice. Now you can have a dialogue with any of your apps that support the new voice interaction service. For example, if a user says "play some music on TuneIn," TuneIn will respond by asking "What genre?".
- Direct Share: a fast and easy way to share to the right person in the right app.
Battery
- Doze: when your device is at rest, Doze automatically puts it into a sleep state to increase your standby battery life.
- App Standby: no more battery drain from seldom used apps; App Standby limits their impact on battery life so your charge lasts longer.
- USB Type C support: Quickly transfer power and data all through the same cable. Lightning fast charging gives you hours of power in just minutes.
Privacy & Security
- On an Android Marshmallow device, apps designed for Android Marshmallow only ask for permission right when it's needed. You can deny any permission and still continue to use the app.
- Advanced controls to turn permissions on or off for all your installed apps.
- Verified boot: when your Android device boots up, it will warn you if the firmware and Android operating system have been modified from the factory version.

System usability improvements

- Use automatic rules to enable Do Not Disturb for as many custom time blocks as you like or around events on your calendar.
- Simplified volume controls allow you to manage notification, music, and alarm volumes easily from anywhere with the touch of your volume keys.
- Streamlined Settings let you manage an app's settings all in one place, from battery and memory usage, to notifications and permissions controls.

Internationalization
- Android is now available in 74+ languages with 6 new additions: Azerbaijani, Gujarati, Kazakh, Albanian, Urdu, and Uzbek.
Android for Work
- When receiving calls or viewing past messages, you can now see the full work contact details even if you're not logged into your work profile.
- Work status notification: A status bar briefcase icon now appears when you're using an app from the work profile and if the device is unlocked directly to an app in the work profile, an alert is displayed notifying the user.
- VPN apps are now visible in Settings > More > VPN. Additionally, the notifications that VPNs use are now specific to whether that VPN is configured for a work profile or the entire device.

Android Marshmallow Change-log

#1: Easy word selection and floating clipboard toolbar
"Finally," someone in the crowd at Google I/O shouted when software head David Burke announced that Android M brings improved word selection and a new clipboard toolbar. Currently, you have a bar of obscure icons at the top when selecting text and that is changing to a floating window that appears alongside your selection (a much more logical place) and features clear and concise buttons rather than obscure icons: 'cut', 'copy', and 'paste' is what the buttons say. Word selection is now also improved as you can select jumping word by word, or character by character.
#2: Fingerprint sensor support
Finally, Google is building a standard API for fingerprint support that - it seems - apps can make use of, and it will be a unified way for phone manufacturers to encode support for fingerprint scanners, knowing that they are compatible with the new Android Pay NFC-based system.
#3: Direct Share
Sharing on Android is by far the best of any mobile operating system, but it's still far from perfect. When you have a bunch of apps installed, you end up with a huge list of sharing options that is extremely frustrating to operate. Direct Share in Android M fixes that by prioritizing and putting first the options that you use the most and that are the most logical for that particular item.
#4: Doze
Doze is a deeper state of sleep, especially useful for Android devices like tablets that spend a lot of time laying idle on a night stand, only to be picked up at night. By hibernating apps and allowing only for alarms and priority notifications to stay awake, Android M brings significant improvements to standby battery life, extending it up to twice on a Nexus 9 unit that Google tested.
#5: Simplified volume controls
If it ain't broken, don't fix it. Google, however, did try to fix the non-broken volume controls in KitKat, and that resulted in an outcry from users frustrated with volume controls in Android 5 Lollipop. So, it was time to fix what has been fixed: volume controls are now again granular, with separate control for ringer volume, alarm volume, and media volume. Finally!
#6: Google Now 'On Tap'
Google Now is getting contextually aware in Android M. What does that mean? With the new Google Now 'On Tap' feature, your voice searches will be recognized contextually within an app. Say, you have the music player on, you can fire up voice search and ask something like "what year was this recorded?", and the search will understand that 'this' refers to the song. Neat!
#7: Auto backup for apps (link to Android developers)
The Android system in M will automatically make a full data backup and restore for apps. This is something that is done for apps targeting M by default, with no need for developers to code in anything. If users delete their Google accounts, their backup data is deleted as well. Automatic backups happen every 24 hours, when the device is idle, charging, AND connected to a Wi-Fi network. This way, when you upgrade to a new device, or wipe clean a device, you can restore easily and pain-free.
#8: Contextual assist framework
#9: Secure token storage APIs
#10: Setup wizard: IMAP sign-in
#11: App Standby
#12: Flex storage

Samsung Galaxy A9 will be released following its predecessors like A3, A5, and A7 models of the revamped Galaxy A (2016) series. The images of the smartphone were leaked via official promotion and is expected to be available in the market this month.

The Galaxy A9 will have a 6" Super AMOLED screen of 1080p resolution and a Snapdragon 620 chipset backed by 3GB of RAM will power the phone. The 620 platform has a powerful octa-core 1.8GHz processor with 4x Cortex-A72 and 4x Cortex-A53 cores, and the GPU for graphics is Adreno 510.

The Galaxy A9 will be following the suit of the smaller A3, A5, and A7 from the 2016 series and will be built with a metal frame and dual 2.5D glass panels.

All other specifications of the Galaxy A9 are the following: a 13MP camera in the back with optical image stabilization and bright f/1.9 aperture. The 8MP selfie camera will also support panoramic pictures, 32GB expandable storage, LTE Cat.7 connectivity, and a 4,000 mAh battery.

With this type of stellar specs, the Galaxy A9 is also expected to feature power bank capabilities. Those would be supported natively by Android 6.0 Marshmallow, but the Galaxy A9 will be released with 5.1.1 Lollipop, which makes it difficult to confirm the availability of this feature.

Samsung Galaxy A9 is supposed to go official very early and be available for consumers in Christmas or in early January. The price in China will be more than CNY 3,000, which implies it will be more than €430.

Samsung featured as top smartphone vendor in the world in the third quarter of 2015 and the arch rival Apple is following them, as per latest report from research organisation, Digitimes Research. While the South Korean tech giant acquired 25.6% market share in Q3, the iPhone maker managed to get 14.5% share.

This is actually quite obvious considering Samsung ships a very large variety of handsets - from the entry level to the mid-range along with good number of flagship models as well. We can be sure that they have a far larger market share, and that makes Apple's iPhone sales all the more impressive (since it is a fact that there is no such thing as a cheap current generation unlocked iPhone).

As for the rest of the top 5 smartphone makers in the world, they are Huawei standing at 7.4%, Lenovo at fourth position with 4.8% and LG is just behind Lenovo's share with 4.5% of the market. Chinese smartphone vendor Xiaomi has come to 6th spot with 3.8% market share, whereas Sony and Microsoft far away with 2% and 1.7% share, respectively. Last quarter we saw 331.9 million smartphones shipped internationally, and this also shows that there is a year-on-year increase of 7.7%.

Aside from various other rumors about the highly anticipated Galaxy Note 6, there is a more recent rumor going around that the upcoming phablet will be almost as powerful as a fully fledged laptop. This may actually turn out to be true but we will just have to wait and see how potent the Snapdragon 823 actually is or if it really is going to power the Note 6.

It would also be exciting to see if the USB Type-C port finally makes its appearance on the Samsung device or whether the Korean company sticks with the tried and tested older micro-USB ports. However, the next iteration of the Samsung Gear VR is rumored by SamMobile to be waterproof, dustproof and sport a USB Type-C port, so it would only make sense if the Note 6 also comes with the same USB technology.

One of the most interesting rumors by Android Geeks hint at an infrared-autofocus based camera with the same 12-megapixel sensor, optical image stabilization and f/1.7 aperture as the S7. Apparently, whether it will be used in the final device or not is yet to be decided. GizmoChina added an extra rumor to the mix, but this one is about an early release date. According to them, Samsung will do what they did it with the S7 and release the Note 6 in August before its expected release date. Some are of the opinion that the release may even happen as early as July, pitting it head to head against the iPhone 7.

The rumored specifications of the Galaxy Note 6 are well known to fans by now but just in case you are not familiar with them yet, here is what we know so far.

SoC - Qualcomm Snapdragon 823/Exynos

Display - 5.8" curved/flat Super AMOLED at 1440p resolution

RAM - 6GB

In-built memory - 256GB

Battery - 4,200 mAh

Water and dust resistance - IP67 certification

As per a recently released report, the Galaxy Note 6 will launched this year in August. In order to stay in the market and move ahead of its competitor Samsung will be releasing this device with some power packed features. Let's take a look.

  • 4K display - Samsung is fully aiming towards making the Galaxy Note 6 its first device with 4K display. Apple is planning to upgrade the display resolution of the iPhone series in 2016 and that would result in Quad HD resolution in the bigger variant of the iPhone 7. Samsung need 4K technology to make sure that they are ahead of the rivals.

  • Curved screen - It is quite possible that the Korean tech giant will produce both flat and curved screen variants of the Galaxy Note 6.

  • Design - The body will be fully made up of metal (aluminium alloy) with special attention to the design aspect.

  • Standout features - The Galaxy Note 6 will come with its S-Pen stylus and a fingerprint sensor is also expected.

  • New chips - Samsung has started mass production of 256GB UFS 2.0 memory chips to power the Galaxy Note 6. These chips will primarily be used for data storage.

  • RAM memory - The Galaxy Note 6 will be backed by 6 GB RAM and the iPhone's 2GB RAM looks miniscule in front of this. Considering the higher screen resolution, gigantic RAM might just become necessity for this device.

  • CPU - East Asian market will see the device with Exynos 8890 chipset, and the device for Western market will package a Snapdragon 820 chip.

  • Camera - It will boast a dual-pixel camera system with 12-megapixels, powered by Super Optical Image Stabilization Plus (which features include a 5-axis OIS system).

Although there was not an iota of doubt regarding existence of the soon to be launched Samsung Galaxy S7 edge (or its name), an official confirmation from Samsung's own website is surely an important thing before the launch.

They recently added a new page about the edge screen features on the website where the company lets developers download SDKs and other similar development kits. This page is not only dedicated to description the edge screen features, but also used to show the devices in which they will be used. The most likely candidates, the Galaxy S6 edge and Galaxy S6 edge+ are listed just like the Galaxy S7. Hence the existence of the flagship device along with the name is officially confirmed.

Apart from this, new edge display functions, which are matching with the S6 edge models's display features after getting the Android 6.0 Marshmallow upgrade, have also been displayed on the website. Adjacent to the normal, narrow edge panels (‘Edge Single'), wider type (‘Edge Single Plus') panels will be added which will show more information and functionality. Those who loved the extensive functionality of the edge display panels present in Galaxy Note Edge, would sure love these wider edge panels in this smartphone.

It is nice to know that Samsung is proactive when it comes to finding fresh and and improved ways use the most popular features that came with nice aesthetics, but didn't score much in terms of functionality. It looks like the Galaxy S7 edge is moving in the right direction.

The Cyanogen OS version 13.1 update is now out for relevant devices and it brings a unique feature along with it, called "Mods." This is not exactly a single feature, but an integration of multiple features from different external apps, built right into the Cyanogen OS itself. In order to understand what we are talking about here, consider the following example. Since it is a part of the Operating System's in-built Phone application, your Skype contacts can now be found in your smartphone's contacts by default, just like all the other contacts. You can place a Skype voice/video call directly from there.

Other popular third-party applications integrated in the OS are; Twitter in the lock screen, OneNote in the E-mail app and Hyperlapse in the camera. You can also instruct Cortana, Microsoft's virtual assistant, to take a selfie by simply saying, "take a selfie!" If you found these features to be interesting then there's much more waiting for you once you actually start using the new OS. As of now, it is only available for the OnePlus One, but YU and Zuk devices are also sure to start receiving the upgrade any day now.

***Cyanogen OS is different from CyanogenMod OS and this news is in relation to the former, as stated throughout the article.

Now that Android Nougat is finally here for Nexus devices, we have a few cool but hidden features that for you to try out on the new OS if you have not already.

1. Turning on the System UI Tuner - On the Quick Settings menu, long press the Settings icon until it starts to spin and when it does, System UI Tuner is enabled. The experimental features in this section include Power Notification controls for restricting or allowing app notifications on a finer level. You can remove the entire Quick Settings panel altogether from the drop down menu as well.

2. Multi-Window Compatibility - Go to Settings > About > Software information and then touch the Build Number seven times and do it fast. Developer Options should now be enabled. Go back to the Settings menu and find the Developer Options. Turn on Force activities to be resizable, and you should now able to open any app on your phone in the multi-window mode, even if they were not compatible with it before.

3. Block spam calls - Go to your phone's Dial app and go to Settings > Call Blocking from the menu. Turn on Caller ID & Spam and also enter any number you wish to block manually. You should now be fairly protected from unwanted callers or spammers.

Play services 6.5

Google Play services 6.5 is now Rolling-out. This release of Google Play services Adds New features to Fit, Maps, Drive, And Wallet Apps. Also, when the SDK lands, it will finally answer the single most common complaint from developers that the GMS library is just too damn big (4-5 MB).

Maps will receive the lion's share of new features with Play services v6.5 update. To begin with, applications making use of maps will now include two convenient buttons in the lower-right corner that will instantly take the user to the Google Maps app for directions and turn-by-turn navigation to the currently selected address. Developers are free to disable these buttons if they prefer to offer a more customized interface. Another handy addition will come in the form of a new "lite mode" map which is designed to be smaller and less interactive.

maps

These simplified maps are intended to be used more like thumbnails, allowing several to comfortably fit on a screen at once. To round things off, developers are finally gaining the ability to send users directly into the Google Maps application and immediately initiate a search, turn by turn navigation, or Street View.

One of the first new features that we stumbled upon was that the LED notification light now lights up for incoming notifications regardless of what sound mode your phone is in (None, Priority, or All). As you probably know, Android 5.0.x. only allowed the LED to flash in the All mode.

2. Improved Wi-Fi quick toggle

wifi

In Android 5.0.x Lollipop, once you tapped on the the text right below the Wi-Fi toggle (which displays the name of the network you're connected to), you were automatically taken to the dedicated Wi-Fi selection menu in Settings. In Android 5.1, tapping the network's name opens a Wi-Fi selection menu directly inside the notification shade.

3. Improved Bluetooth quick toggle

Similar to the Wi-Fi toggle, tapping the text right below the Bluetooth icon will open a dedicated notification shade menu displaying the nearby Bluetooth devices that have been paired with your phone. Have in mind that this new menu doesn't allow you to scan for available devices in order to do so, you'll still have to head on to the Bluetooth menu in Settings. Hence, you don't have to leave your current app in order to switch between your paired Bluetooth devices.

4. Improved lock screen behavior

In Android 5.1, when your device is locked and you swipe down the notification shade, you can unlock your phone by swiping up outside said shade. If you, however, swipe up within the notification settings, your phone will remain locked. That's a subtle change over Android 5.0.x, in which you'll be taken directly to the lock screen regardless whether you swipe from within or outside the expanded quick settings shade.

5. Removable Invert Colors/Wi-Fi Hotspot toggles

If you've been fiddling and tinkering with Android 5.0 Lollipop, you might have inadvertently added two toggles in the quick settings toggle menu - Invert Colors and Wi-Fi Hotspot. This happens by simply trying out these features and unfortunately, once you enable them, you can't remove the respective toggles from the quick settings drawer. Luckily, Android 5.1 allows you to do so once these pop up, just press and hold the respective toggles and once the dialog appears, tap "Hide".

6. More user-friendly screen pinning

pinning

The screen pinning feature that debuted with Lollipop comes in handy, but somewhat unfinished and not that user-friendly. In the newest version of the OS, the feature acts just like as it previously did, but enabling it is much more user-friendly. Open the app you want to pin, go to the app switcher, press the pin icon on the first app card, and voila, a better-looking menu will inform you that you are about to pin the given app.

7. Improved heads-up notifications

Once you receive a notification and it pops up right at the top of your display, you can now swipe it up to get rid of the heads-up message but keep the notification itself in the notification bar. In the first Lollipop, you can only swipe it away to the left or right, dismissing both the heads-up message and the notification.

8. No interruptions until next alarm

alarm

This is actually a quite handy addition to Priority mode: if you set an alarm, you'll be provided with the option to enable priority mode until the alarm goes off. In our case, we've set an alarm for 4:23 PM and have enabled the newly-included option, meaning that we'll only be interrupted by the priority interruptions that you have previously configured.

Although some of these features may not make it to the final version of the firmware, let's take a look at the best of what we have seen so far in the beta builds of the Android Nougat 7.0 OS for the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge.

The New Look - Everything from the app icons and fonts, to the general color scheme of the device has been changed. Although opinions may differ, we think it looks better now than it ever did before.

Blue Light Filter - This will help relieve the pressure usually accumulated in our eyes from spending long amounts of time looking at a phone screen.

Changes in the Notification Panel - You can rearrange the icons in the Quick Settings panel, change the grid size and move the brightness slider around. A revamped notification panel will also allow you to reply to conversations right from the notifications menu.

Resolution Scaling - You will have the option to choose between 1280 × 720 (HD), 1920 × 1080 (Full HD) and 2560 × 1440 (QHD) resolution for your phone's display, with the default set at 1080p for better power-efficiency.

Put to Sleep - This one is a very useful feature which lets you stop an app from auto-starting, receiving updates, using power in the background or send you push notifications by just long pressing on the icon and choosing, "Put to Sleep."

Performance Mode: The performance of the S7 or the S7 Edge can now be put into the following gears, depending on the task at hand.

Normal: 1080p, video enhancer on, game launcher on, game tools on

Game mode: 1080p, max brightness, game launcher on, game tools on

Entertainment mode: 1440p, max brightness, video enhancer on, UHQ upscaler on

High performance: 1440p, max brightness.

There are plenty of other tweaks, both big and small and we are sure to see a few more before the final build is released.
