The OnePlus 3 is an extremely well made smartphone, especially considering the price and it's about to get even better. Engadget has received confirmation from the head of OnePlus's software department, Brian Yoon, that a beta build for the OnePlus community will be ready by the end of November. What this also means is that the final build of Android 7.0 with the new Oxygen OS on top will be reaching OnePlus 3 smartphones all over the world via OTA by the end of 2016. Considering that 2016 only has one more month left in it, it would be safe to conclude that the final build will land on the OnePlus 3 next month.

OnePlus isn't a company that's known for providing speedy updates, but that seems to have changed thanks to a pretty big decision. They have merged the development teams responsible for maintaining and updating the HydrogenOS in China with their counterpart for the international OxygenOS to create one unified strong software department that will provide their customers with much faster updates. In fact, even the OnePlus 2 will receive the upgrade to Android Nougat, later in 2017.

As we progress more into the new year, we are getting more leaks and news about the upcoming smartphones this year. The latest rumor is about the OnePlus release date. According to the news, the OnePlus 9 series is expected to be launched in the first half of 2021. The report also suggests that a Lite variant could also unveil alongside OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro. The lite variant will be further available in two different models and will be launched in China and India. The device could also be released for the European countries later on but so far, there isn't any news confirming the assumption,

Tipster TechDroider said in a tweet that the OnePlus 9 Lite will be available in two different variants - LE2100 and LE2101. The tweet further said that "It is Coming to China and India. Might come to the EU, can't confirm as of now. The device will feature a Snapdragon 865 5G CPU," Another leak suggests that the smartphone will use last year's Snapdragon 865 processing chip instead of the Snapdragon 888 which we will likely see integrated into the OnePlus 9 regular model and the Pro model. Some tech enthusiasts suggest that the Lite model will be a slightly upgraded version of the OnePlus 8T. The Lite could retain some features of the 8T as well, including a 120Hz refresh rate as well as the same primary camera and ultra-wide camera. But the 9T could be less expensive than the previous phone.

According to other leaks, the device features a 6.55-inches Full HD+ display with a flat display instead of a curved display. We don't have any official statement regarding the release of the phone yet, though rumors hint that the OnePlus 9 series could be announced in the first or second week of March. OnePlus 9 series is going to have 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage on the board. The device is going to have a triple camera system without any optical zoom capability. So far, no OnePlus camera has a periscope camera either, which means the optical zoom ranges are likely to be around 3x. Another rumor suggests that the device is coming with 65W fast charging, 30W fast wireless charging, and a 4,500mAh battery on the board.

redmi k30 pro

Last year's Redmi K20 Pro was inarguably one of the best flagship smartphones from the company. The device offered high-quality hardware at a very affordable price, making it one of the most popular smartphones of the year.

Xiaomi has officially confirmed on Weibo that the Redmi K30Pro will arrive in March, although we don't have a specific date yet. It also uploaded a poster showing a phone without a punch-hole camera in the top corners. The Redmi K30 Pro has expected the company's latest smartphone belongs to the flagship category, just like its predecessor K20 Pro.

We have heard a lot about the phone so far, and now we know that it is coming next month. The poster and the leaks also give hint that Redmi K30 Pro will feature a pop-up selfie camera instead of the K30's punch-hole cute-out. The picture doesn't show the whole display but it doesn't make any sense for having the selfie camera the bottom of the device. But it is far more likely that Xiaomi is reverting to the K20 family's pop-up camera.

A few rumors suggest that the device will feature a 64MP quad rear camera system. Other leaks suggest that the K30 Pro will be powered by a Snapdragon 865 and will support the 5G network connectivity. The device has a 4,700mAh battery that is sufficient enough to keep it on charge for a whole day even for the heavy user. Unfortunately, the phone doesn't offer wireless charging. We have to wait till next month to see what else the phone has to offer.

108MP camera seems to be a hot selling point for premium smartphones this year. We have seen a high-resolution camera up to 108MP in the past 12 months or so, including the Xiaomi Mi Note 10 and Samsung Galaxy Note 20 ultra. But all of these phones were expensive and not something everyone could afford. Samsung Galaxy Note 20 ultra was nearly over $1,000 which is an insane price tag.

Now, we leak by a reputable leaker with username ‘digital chat station' on Weibo social network that is surprisingly pleasant. According to him, the first 108MP Redmi phone is in the last phases of the manufacturing process and we might have it soon. He further added that it's part of three new upcoming Redmi Note 9 series devices that are expected in mid-November rather than a Redmi Note 10 series.

According to him, the phone will feature a Samsung Isocell HM2 sensor. This is a new 108MP camera sensor from the company and features a 0.7-micron pixel with a 1/1.52 inch sensor size - slightly smaller in both categories than the company's earlier 108MP camera sensors. The HM2 still features new binding technology, combining data from nine adjacent pixels into one for a crisper and cleaner image.

This isn't the first time we have such a leak, as the earlier leaks suggest that a phone called J17 by Redmi might have a 108MP camera and a telephoto macro camera. The "J17" lines up with a Xiaomi device with model number M2007J17C/M2007J17G that was previously spotted on certification websites and could offer 33W charging. The Redmi Note 9 Pro max is currently one of the most popular high-end devices in India. So, if the new phone fall in the budget-category, we could be looking at the cheapest 108MP phone.

The Vivo v17 pro has received an official price cut of Rs. 2000 within a month after its launch in India. It was launched in late September this year, and the price was Rs 29,990. You can also further reduce the price with the 5% cashback offer if you buy the device online using HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and Axis Bank credit and debit cards, This would give users up to Rs. 1,400 discount on the new retail price. If you are looking for a premium smartphone with a budget-friendly option, Vivo V17 is your device.

The Vivo V17 Pro is a mid-range smartphone that comes with many premium features, full-display notch-less design. For the selfie camera, it uses a pop-up housing. The rear camera setup uses a 48-megapixel primary sensor with f/1.8 lens, an 8-megapixel f/2.2 ultra-wide unit, a 13-megapixel telephoto unit offering 2x optical zoom, and a 2-megapixel telephoto unit with 2x optical zoom, a 20megapixel depth assistance unit with an f/2.4 lens. The Vivo V17 Pro can shoot videos on both 4K and Full HD at 30fp. The front camera is 32-megapixel with a f/2.0 lens, and an ultra-wide angle unit with 8-megapixel sensor.

The device has a gradient color on the cover and available in the crystal black, crystal sky, and midnight ocean finish. For connectivity, the device uses a USB-C 2.0 port for charging and tethering, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 5. There is also an under-display fingerprint scanner for biometric authentication. The phone has a solid 4,100mAh battery that supports 18W fast charging.

vivo

Vivo launched an updated version of S-series in March with a new model called the Vivo S6 5G. The phone was the only phone in the series with 5G network ability but it is also one of the few Vivo phones powered by an Exynos process. As per leaks, the company is about the release of a new S-series phone next month. According to the leaks, the Vivo S series will be updated next month. The company could launch a new device known as the Vivo S7.

Last month it was reported that the company will be launching a new phone called Vivo S6 Pro 5G. the phone is yet to be launched and we aren't sure if the upcoming device is going to be Vivo S6 Pro 5G or Vivo S7 to be exact, as we are still in the dark; guessing. But we can be optimistic about the phone support for 5G.

We don't know much about the specs, but it might not be drastically different than its predecessor Vivo S6. The phone has a 6.44-inch large display with 1080x2400 pixels. The phone uses Android 10 with Funtouch 10.0 on the top of the operating system. As mentioned earlier, the phone is powered by the Exynos 980, octa-core CPU, and Mali-G76 GPU. If you are like me, a long time Verizon Wireless customer, you will hate to see this, Verizon Wireless has announced that they will be increasing their loyal customers' grandfathered unlimited data plans $20 per month.

Verizon has already exerted some force on this band of unlimited data resistance fighters. It stopped offering unlimited data plans in 2011, so it wouldn't renew two-year contracts. These people continued on Verizon on a month-to-month basis, and they also had to pay full price for new phones.

When asked about this increased, here's the response:

"How do you put a cost on reliability?" Company Rep said. "If you charge a little more, but you're providing an excellent service, customers don't mind that. They know you get what you pay for."

Press release:

We continuously evaluate the price of our plans and service, so we're increasing the price of unlimited data plans by $20 per line per month for customers no longer under contract with Verizon Wireless. At the same time, we're also offering customers currently on our unlimited data plan the added benefit of purchasing a new phone using our monthly device payment plan, instead of paying full price up-front for the device. This option is available to all unlimited data plan users once their current contract period ends.

These changes will allow Verizon to continue to maintain the highest standards of network performance for all our customers. And it's worth noting that Verizon does not manage the data connection speeds (often called throttling) for its customers - including those who have kept or plan to keep their unlimited data plans.

Most of our customers (99%) are not on unlimited data plans, and for those who are, many could save money by switching to a Verizon Plan, based on their data usage. For the small number of customers still on unlimited data plans, they will see the increase in their first monthly bill after November 15.

Verizon will not increase the price on any lines with an unlimited data plan that is currently in a two-year contract until the customer completes that contract or enters into a new contract. This increase does not affect government or corporate accounts that have unlimited data.

A tool that every Samsung user has it installed on his computer, Samsung KIES, the Samsung's smartphone manager suite for PC and Mac, will get a major overhaul update. According to confirmed reports, Samsung is planning on releasing KIES 4 with a completely new design to look similar to the company's TouchWiz  Newlook for its latest Android 5.0 Lollipop update.

Samsung Kies 4 is expected to be available for download sometimes during Next month (March). Coincidentally, that's when the company also launches its flagship smartphones, so hopefully the Galaxy S6 will have a new computer buddy to play with.

Samsung logo

In terms of functionality, there's no information if Samsung will be adding features. Many users love Kies for its data backup skills and it's likely that the company plays it safe and just apply a refreshing coat of paint to the suite.

The Mobile World Congress is the biggest event of the year when it comes to smartphones, tablets and just about any other mobile consumer products. It's almost upon us as February 27 draws near, but do you know what to expect from the smartphone manufacturers this year at Barcelona? We have a pretty good idea, so here are the most anticipated devices that we could be getting a glimpse of in a few days.

HTC Ocean

If rumors are true, the HTC Ocean will be operated entirely via voice commands, gestures and of course, touch.

LG G6

Although the G6 will probably not be sporting the upcoming Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 flagship chipset, it is expected to sport the world's first 18:9 ratio borderless display with a resolution of 1440 x 2880 pixels.

Blackberry Mercury

TCL Communications are making the handsets for Blackberry nowadays and this is going to be their third handset after the collaboration. The Mercury will sport the trademark Blackberry keyboard and a fingerprint scanner.

Moto G5 and G5 Plus

The cameras on the Moto G4 Plus were simply the best in the mid-range segment and the G5 and G5 Plus are rumoured to sport even better sensors. We will have to wait and see what other improvements Lenovo brings in with the two new handsets.

There are also the Sony Xperia X, the Nokia P1 and the Huawei P10 that's incoming in a few days and we are pretty excited about them too. Which ones are you looking forward to the most? In case you were looking for the Galaxy S8 on this list, we are sorry to inform you that Samsung has confirmed that the S8 will be withheld from the Mobile World Congress this year.

Saikat Kar (tech-enthusiast)

Although it's not really anything new because all rumors and leaksters had been saying the same thing for a long time now, but it's still worth mentioning because this is the first time that this has become official; The Galaxy S9 and S9+ will be unveiled at the Mobile World Congress 2018 in Barcelona next month. As this plan was revealed by the head of Samsung Mobile, DJ Koh himself at the CES 2018 earlier, it can be considered as authentic news without a doubt.

While we are yet to see any convincingly real live images of the device, you should not expect the S9 or S9+ to sport any radical changes in terms of the design language. They may look quite similar to the S8 and S8+ in fact, with perhaps the exception of the rear mounted fingerprint scanner that will in all likelihood be moved to the center of the back. Also, Samsung might copy Apple (that it has so often been blamed for doing) and reserve the dual camera setup only for the bigger and more expensive S9+. We will find out more soon so stay tuned.

LTE has changed both the way and the quantity in which smartphone users consume data nowadays and recent studies suggest that it will only continue to increase. With the likes of Netflix, Spotify and YouTube being used so frequently by users all over the world, it isn't really a surprise though.

The latest Ericsson Mobility Report indicates that the monthly data consumption rate will hit the 8.9GB mark by 2021 for the average smartphone user. Considering the fact that as of now, the average monthly data consumption for smartphone users is currently 1.4GB, that is a big hike!
According to the report, the huge change will be brought forth by the following factors.

1) A significantly more number of people will start using smartphones.
2) 4G LTE will become available in areas where it was previously unavailable.
3) At least some of the carriers will make 5G speeds available to the consumers by 2020.

As one would expect, North America and Western Europe tops the chart in this report as prime data consumers, followed by Central and Eastern Europe and South America. The types of content which will be most responsible for consuming all that data are predictably, video content and social networking.

Which app hogs the most data in your smartphone?

Author: Saikat Kar (Tech-journalist and enthusiast)

In about a month's time, one of 2018's biggest consumer electronics events is going to start from January 9 and last till January 12 and it's about time that we took a look at some of the most expected appearances at the show.

Google

Smack dab in the middle of the venue, Google has already booked a huge booth for the show. While a lot of experts are of the opinion that the Pixel 2, Pixel XL, Daydream View, Google Home and the Google Home Mini will be on display here, there's a chance that the search engine giant may also showcase the newly launched PixelBook. It's basically going to be a place to show off "Made by Google" hardware.

Samsung

Aside from a 150-inch Home LED Display, a new series of MicroLED TVs and an updated range of QLED TVs, the Korean tech giant is also expected to launch a teaser trailer of the Galaxy S9 and S9+. Other rumors regarding the company's possible showcases include a few new smartwatches and a foldable smartphone, aka the Galaxy X.

LG (January 8 at 08:00 PT/16:00 GMT)

To keep Samsung on its toes, LG will likely drawing the curtains off its new range of 4K OLED TVs, which will most probably be the B8, C8, G8 and the W8. A new range of mid-range smartphones will also make their appearances at the show, but we are not sure about the LG G7 yet.

Lenovo (January 9 at 11:00 PT/07:00 GMT)

We don't know what else the company is bringing to the table, but a standalone Daydream VR headset is almost surely going to be there.

Sony (January 8 at 17:00 PT/01:00 GMT on January 9)

A new range of Bravia 4K OLED TVs and 4K HDR projectors are on the cards at this invite-only get-together by Sony.

Dell

The Dell XPS 13 2017 Edition is going to make its official debut at the CES 2018 and it looks to be one very beautiful, thin and classy laptop.

If we missed something then it's likely because a lot of events have not been disclosed yet, but do feel free to let us know in the comments about what you are looking forward to the most in next year's Consumer Electronics Show at Las Vegas.

Security Researchers from Positive Technologies have recently revealed information about a buffer overflow they stumbled upon in the firmware update of Intel's management engine 11's which is secret. They stated that the Intel firmware update could be attacked by sophisticated individuals to gain access to ME functionality despite being turned off. This clearly means that sophisticated intruders would be able to play real money slots from the system they attack despite a firmware update being released by the chipmaker. The researchers have also claimed that the firmware update released by the manufacturer may not be significant to permanently resolve the issues.

The Intel management engine which is also known as the Intel ME resides in the controller hub of the platform and is a co-processor which powers the remote administrative features of the company. It has its own operating system which is the Intel Minix 3 that is similar to the Intel UNIX operating system. It has been designed to monitor computers and has access comprehensively to all the data and processes of the primary system.

The researchers stumbled upon four vulnerabilities which affected firmware Intel ME versions 11.0 to 11.20. Two of the vulnerabilities were found in earlier versions of the firmware belonging to Intel ME along with two in server platform services and a couple in the trusted Intel execution engine version 3.0.

A security audit was conducted by Intel after the firmware update warnings were issued by the researchers for identifying and exploring the vulnerabilities of the firmware update which were affecting the Intel ME. Intel issued a statement to its users on November 20 they were responding to issues discovered by external researchers about the firmware update and therefore they had completed a comprehensive security review of the flaws which were identified with the objective of enhancing the resilience of their firmware.

Firmware Intel identified the issues for their management engine, trusted execution engine and Intel server platform services and decided to issue a firmware update to resolve the issues plaguing the ME platform. The researchers, however, believe that the firmware update released by Intel does not prevent an intruder from using other methods for the attack which was also patched by the chipmaker during a recent firmware update.

The chipmaker has not responded positively when questioned about whether they had any plans to modify the way their management engine works or to begin producing chips without the ME. A spokesperson for the company provided a recommendation that requests such as these should be forwarded to the hardware vendors.

The spokesperson for the company issued a statement saying that the management engine is capable of providing important functionality for its users and includes features such as two-factor authentication, enterprise service management and even the option to get heart bingo reviews. They advised system owners with customers requirements to contact equipment manufacturers for the kind of request being put forward to the chipmakers. The company, however, confirmed that it would not support any configuration which would remove the functionality essential in most of their mainstream products apart from providing the firmware update.

The statement issued by the chipmaker certainly comes as a surprise since Intel has been one of the leading firmware manufacturers of such products throughout the world for a number of years. It has also issued a firmware update whenever needed.

iWatch

Tech analyst, John Gruber, has a good reputation when it comes to leaking information about Apple devices. So when he says to expect the long-awaited Apple iWatch to finally see the light of day next month, there is a very good chance that it will actually happen. Apple is holding an event on September 9th that is expected to unveil the Apple iPhone 6. It is possible that the iWatch will also be introduced at that time.

By July of last year, Apple had trademarked the iWatch name in a number of countries. The wearable is expected to come out of the box with a number of sensors that will allow it to capture health-related metrics such as heart rate, blood pressure and possibly blood glucose readings. That information can be sent to Apple's Health app, where it will be analyzed. The app will debut on iOS 8.

Windows 9

A public "Tech Preview" of the next version of Windows, Windows 9 codenamed "Threshold", could apparently land as soon as next month, according to certain unnamed sources. This version will almost certainly end up being called Windows 9 when it's going to be released in spring 2015.

Windows 9 has recently been rumored to introduce a few interesting new features, most of which are actually fixes to the niggles many have had with Windows 8 and its radical two-faced approach to computing. Long story short: using Windows with a mouse and keyboard is about to become a lot less of a hassle.

Windows 9

So, the Modern (aka Metro) apps are due to get windowing support, the elusive Charms bar will be gone forever, there will be a new "mini" Start Menu, and Microsoft may also bake in virtual desktops. Additionally, we may see Cortana make an appearance outside of the confines of Windows Phone.

Nvidia lollipop

Nvidia has just published a video on YouTube in which it teases the upcoming Lollipop update for Nvidia's Shield tablet. The roll-out time frame of "November" is mentioned quite a few times, so we're assuming Nvidia's engineers are pretty sure they'll be able to pull it off. The company still confirms that the update is coming this Month.

The video, which you can see in full below, also quickly skims through a couple of Nvidia-specific additions for the Shield tablet. The Dabbler app and the Shield Hub will both be updated, with the new versions landing alongside the Lollipop update.

Nexus 6

The Wall Street Journal today is reporting that Google will launch a 5.9-inch Nexus smartphone sometime later this month. Of course, this is what we've been hearing for quite a while now, so the report is far from being surprising but it's still good to see more reliable sources confirming the arrival of a new Nexus.

As mentioned many times before, the upcoming device codenamed Shamu is manufactured by Motorola, and will be the most advanced Nexus handset yet.

Its 5.9-inch display will have 1440 x 2560 pixels, while other features should include a quad-core Snapdragon 805 processor, 3 GB RAM, 12 MP rear camera, and a 3200 mAh battery.

Nexus 9

The Wi-Fi only variant of the HTC Nexus 9 is already available on stores. Today, T-Mobile announced that it will begin offering the LTE-variant of the HTC Nexus 9 in Early December in all 3 colors (Black, White and Sand). The 64-bit Tegra K1-packing slate will be available with $0 down and 24 monthly payments of $24.99.

Outright pricing of the LTE Nexus 9 is not mentioned, though a quick calculation of the monthly installments reveals that the Big Magenta will be asking $600 for the tablet. The 4G device is solely available with 32GB of built-in memory.

Nexus 9

The LTE Nexus 9 will be available through T-Mobile Underground. This particular section of the carrier's online store is reserved for products, which are available in limited quantities.

Xperia Z3

Sony has been gathering a lot of attention in the past few days with a lot of rumors and speculations about its CES 2015 announcements. It appears that the tech giant has opted to put off major announcements in the mobile division and save the heat for MVC in a few months. This of course means that there is no word yet on a future Xperia Z4 device lineup, which has been a persistent rumor for quite some time now.

Sony users do, however have a lot to be happy about after the presentation and especially owners of devices from the Xperia Z family. The Japanese company has not forgotten its promise to bring Android 5.0 Lollipop to its entire Xperia Z3 lineup and according to Michael Fasulo, the company's CEO, first builds for Xperia Z3 devices can be expected as early as next month.

The Galaxy Note 4 and the Galaxy Note Edge have started to receive security updates for the month of November just recently. If you are wondering why the two devices did not get the update earlier, the answer is that they are both old devices now and have therefore slipped way down the ladder of priority. Even though these phones were flagships from Samsung in 2014, the two year expiry date is already over.

The security patch is around 60 MB in size and alongside the Android SMR for November, it also brings improvements in domestic data roaming on the two smartphones. After you have downloaded and installed the small update on your device, the firmware version should change to N910TUVS2EPK2 on the Note 4 and to N915TUVS2DPK2 on the Note Edge. If you have any of the two handsets on T-Mobile, you should be prompted to update your device anytime now. Don't be confused by T-Mobile's official page where the last update rollout date for these two phones from the carrier is still being shown as October 24. It's just that they haven't updated that page yet.

Although the Galaxy Note 5 on T-Mobile is running on the latest version of the Android Nougat OS upgrade offered by Samsung yet, strangely enough, it did not receive the April security update for some reason. However, that should no longer be an issue because T-Mobile has already started to roll out the May security Update for its users across the US.

The firmware version of the update is N920TUVU4EQE1 and it comes in at a decent size of 209.56 MB. Even though it's not a particularly big file, use your Wi-Fi if you have it (you better get one soon if you don't!). Check out the improvements it brings to the Galaxy Note 5 below and in the screenshot.

• Updated Application: GMS
• The Security of your device has been improved.
A software update can include but is not limited to:
• Device Stability Improvements, bug fixes
• New and/or enhanced features
• Further improvements to performance

It took a while for Samsung to start sending Android 7.0 Nougat out to the Galaxy Tab A 10.1 (2016), but now that it's finally rolling out to the tablet from last year, the OEM has decided to also bless it with the latest Android SMR update. Do you own the version with the S-Pen or the standard variant? It doesn't matter really because the same update is making its way towards both the devices simultaneously.

If you own the standard Galaxy Tab A without the S Pen, you should see firmware version T580XXU2BQE4 arrive on your tablet and provided you paid a bit extra to get the S Pen variant, you will be receiving your firmware in version P580KXU1BQE6. All the essential and latest bug fixes from Google will be included in the update, along with some of Samsung's own. We are not sure how much of a performance improvement this will actually bring to your device, given it's only a minor monthly update, but if you experience anything positive or negative, do let us know in the comments.

The month might almost be over, but it isn't over just yet. So, in a way Samsung is on time with the May security update for the Note 4 and Note Edge. As per the source, the update is only available to European users right now, but it's only a matter of time (which hopefully won't be too long) before the same goes live in all regions. This news concerns only the unlocked versions, so if you have one of these two handsets on a carrier contract, you will have to check with your carrier for details about the SMR.

The Galaxy Note 4 is being upgraded to firmware version N910FXXU1DQE2 and the curved Note Edge will be receiving its update with firmware version N915FYXXS1DQE1. There isn't much to say about the May security update than the fact that it addresses 54 Android vulnerabilities and bugs this month. Samsung has bundled in its own set of 11 fixes with the OTA update as well. Let us know if you see anything new.

It might already be July but Samsung is still in the process of rolling out last month's security update to many of its lower end smartphones. As per the latest report, the June security update is currently being rolled out to the Galaxy Xcover 4 in the European Region via OTA. Although you probably know already, it's worth mentioning that this includes the original Android June SMR update from Google which contains fixes and patches for 96 bugs and loopholes, in addition to the Galaxy patch by Samsung which contains 23 exclusive patches for all Galaxy branded smartphones.

If you are in the European region, you should see firmware version G390FXXU1AQF8 landing on your Galaxy Xcover 4 anytime now. If you are not in Europe however, we are not sure when you are going to get the update as the handset was released exclusively in that region as far as I know. In case you already have the update on your phone, let us know in the comments about it.

If you happen to own a Galaxy Note 8 in the US without contract, we have good news for you because as per a report by PhoneArena, the latest flagship handset from Samsung just started receiving the November security update via OTA in the United States. The update fixes 6 of Samsung's own bugs and vulnerabilities in the User Interface, along with 61 problems common to all Android OS powered smartphones and tablets. The fix for the KRACK Wi-Fi security threat is also included.

The Verizon versions of the Galaxy Note 8 also started receiving an OTA update, but as it turns out, it does not contain the November security patch, but only the update for October; talk about being late! Even the Verizon update includes the KRACK patch though. What the this update from Verizon does have however, are modifications and improvements on the camera app. The details of which, you can check out below.

The March security update has actually been rolled out by Samsung much faster this month, especially compared to the last few months. This time it is time for the Galaxy J3 (2017) to receive the March security update in Italy, so if you have the phone, do check to see if firmware version J330FNXXU3ARC1 has made its way onto your notification bar. Even if you are not in Italy, there's a good chance that by the time you finish reading this, Samsung has already started rolling the OTA package in some other regions as well. This update should take care of five Samsung UI related issues and all of the multiple vulnerabilities shared by every Android device.

While a lot of people tend to complain when the low and mid-range smartphone models from the company's arsenal receive security updates before the more expensive ones, we think it's actually a good move by Samsung that shows they do care about all their handsets (at least up to an extent anyway!).

We are about to enter the last week of March, but the month is not over yet, so you should be glad to know that Samsung is now rolling out the March security update to the Galaxy S8+. As of now, reports indicate that the rollout is being carried out in Germany for the unlocked variants, but it wouldn't be surprising if the update is waiting for you, even if you don't live in Germany. Once these updates start to roll out in one region, they don't take too much time in appearing in all the other regions as well. The US and China has a slightly different time schedule though.

In case you are not aware what you are going to get with the patch, go through the following.

·         9 critical vulnerabilities will be addressed in the base Android OS

·         Multiple less severe vulnerabilities in the base Android OS will also be addressed

·         The patch will include 5 of Samsung's own fixes

·         The firmware in question carries version number G955FXXU1CRC7

If you have a Galaxy S8, we are expecting the same update to hit the device any day now.

As far as major OS upgrades are concerned, the low - mid end Samsung smartphones are usually not the ones who get their updates when they should, but it's different scenario as far as the security updates are concerned though. Whether you support the strategy or not, Samsung has proven time and again that they roll out their security updates, as soon as they are ready to run on a specific model, rather than prioritizing the high-end models over the low to mid rangers. Staying true to that philosophy, Samsung has just started to roll out the January security patch the Galaxy A5 (2016) and Galaxy A5 (2017).

a5-galaxy-2017-update

While 2019's first security update isn't the heaviest we have seen from Google or Samsung, it still is an essential update that will patch three critical vulnerabilities in the Android OS and four bugs in Samsung's overlying software interface. If you own a A5 (2016), chances are that you will see the update sooner than you would if you own a A5 (2017), given that users from more varied regions have reported getting the update for their A5 (2016). Nonetheless, irrespective of your location or device, the security update for January should reach both devices in all areas within a week or two.
