 Location in Pokémon GO

Heard you can spoof your geo-location in Pokémon GO, and want to know if you can actually do it?

Well, we're happy to say that yes, you can definitely do that. Unfortunately, it's a multi-step process, but we'll show you some guides for Android and iOS that (we hope) will make the whole process simpler.

So let's get started.

How to Spoof Your Geo-Location in Pokémon GO

We're going to show you how to do this on both iOS and Android devices. Before we start, though, make sure you get yourself a decent VPN. You'll need it on both platforms. You can find the best Pokémon GO VPNs here.

Once you subscribed to a service and downloaded and installed the VPN app on your device, you can move on to the next steps:

On Android

  1. Download and install a fake GPS app. We recommend Fake GPS Location.
  2. Head to Settings > About Phone > Software information.
  3. Look for Build number, and tap it seven times. Once you do that, you'll enable developer mode.
  4. Now, go back to the Settings menu, and look for Developer Options at the bottom of the list.
  5. Tap Mock Locations App and enable it. Depending on your version, you might see Allow Mock Locations instead.
  6. Pick the fake GPS app you just installed.
  7. You're not out of the woods yet! Follow this link to download and install the Mock Mock Locations module. Without it, Pokémon GO will think you're using a mock locations app.
  8. Turn on the module.
  9. Now it's time to run the VPN app. Use it to connect to the server you want.
  10. Next, run the fake GPS app, and use it to set coordinates that are similar to the VPN server's location.
  11. Finally, launch Pokémon GO and enjoy it to the max!

On iPhone

  1. To hide your location on iOS, you'll first need to jailbreak your device. WikiHow actually has a pretty good guide covering that.
  2. Now, you need to get a fake GPS app. You can't get it on iTunes, though. Instead, you'll have to use Cydia - an unofficial app store for jailbroken iPhones. Alternatively, use Sileo.
  3. You're going to have to find, download, and install tsProtector. It's not a fake GPS app. Instead, it's an app that hides the fact that your iPhone is jailbroken from Pokémon GO.
  4. Once that's done, it's time to get a fake GPS app. Location Spoofer is the best one for the job.
  5. Time to start the fake GPS app. Use it to pick a location - just make sure it's the same region like the VPN server.
  6. Now run the VPN, and connect to the server you want (it has to match the location chosen in the fake GPS app).
  7. Start Pokémon GO, and enjoy a restriction-free gaming experience.

DISCLAIMER: We are not responsible for any issues you encounter or damages you might do to your iPhone when trying to jailbreak it. Make sure you follow the guide really close so that you don't make any mistakes.

Can't I Just Use a VPN to Change My Location in Pokémon GO?

Unfortunately, no. While a VPN can spoof your geo-location by hiding your IP address, it can't really hide it too well from Niantic (the company behind Pokémon GO).

Why?

Because Pokémon GO doesn't just use your IP address to see your geo-location. It also collects GPS data which it uses to track your movements. So just hiding your IP address from the game won't do much. Niantic will see that your IP address points to one location, while your GPS data tells a completely different story.

That's why you also need to use a fake GPS app. That's the only way to make your phone's GPS data match the VPN server's IP address.

Why Hide Your Location in Pokémon GO in the First Place?

Doing this will benefit you the most if you live in a suburb or rural area. Compared to people living in big cities, you'll find far less Pokémon, PokéStops, and gyms in your area. So you'll always be at a disadvantage compared to them, which is hardly fair.

What's more, you'll miss out on all the fun too. That's because the big cities are where most of the socializing in Pokémon GO takes place (battles, gym raiding, swapping Pokémon).

So hiding your geo-location to make it seem like you're in a big city is a no-brainer.

Besides that, here's why else you might want to spoof your geo-location in Pokémon GO:

  • Unlock geo-restricted Pokémon that are only available in specific regions. For example, Sigilyph is only available in Albania and Greece in Europe, and Pachirisu only shows up in Russia in Asia.
  • Get around firewalls that block your access to the game's servers - like on college campus or in a country whose government banned Pokémon GO (like Iran).

Will Using a VPN in Pokémon GO Get You Banned?

If you don't use it together with a fake GPS app, that could happen. Similarly, using a fake GPS app without a VPN server that matches its location will likely result in a ban.

Why are we so sure?

Because Niantic considers it cheating. It says so in their Player Guidelines:

Change Your Geo-Location

The third bullet point: "using tools or techniques to alter or falsify your location (‘spoofing')."

So bottom line - don't change your location in Pokémon GO too often. Their system might be configured to detect sudden geo-location changes, and automatically ban accounts linked to them. And always use VPNs and fake GPS apps together, never alone.

Did You Ever Change Your Location in Pokémon GO?

If yes, how did things go? Were you able to bypass geo-blocks and bans easily, or did you encounter any issues?

Please tell us about your experience in the comments or on social media. Also, if you know other ways to hide your geo-location in Pokémon GO, please let us know.
