According to Reuters, Samsung Galaxy S3 became the world's best-selling smartphone model last quarter, pushing aside Apple Inc's iPhone, which has dominated the chart for more than two years, research firm Strategy Analytics said on Thursday.

Strategy Analytics estimated Samsung sold 18 million S3 models in the third quarter, compared with iPhone 4S sales of 16.2 million.

Strong sales of the flagship Galaxy S3 - which comes with a large 4.8 inch touchscreen - helped Samsung post a record $7.3 billion operating profit in the July-September quarter.

"Samsung's Galaxy S3 has proven wildly popular with consumers and operators across North America, Europe and Asia," said analyst Neil Mawston, adding the new iPhone 5 would likely reclaim the top spot for Apple in the current quarter.

Sprint's top five smartphones surprisingly does not include iPhone 5. Galaxy Note II is takes the lead on thebest-rated smartphones among customers. It received a score of 4.7 out of 5.0 and beat out other devices from other makers such as HTC and Motorola, among others.

Interestingly, the Galaxy Note II is also on top of Verizon's list for "most appreciated". Sprint offers the Note II on contract for $299.99, which can be quite expensive for some.

Others that made the top-5 list are the LG Optimus G and another Samsung product, the Galaxy S III, the iPhone 4S and the HTC Evo 4G LTE.

Time and again, Samsung has proven that they can beat out other brands of smartphones, despite the slew of lawsuits that it has weathered in the past few years and the allegations of other bigwigs that it has a penchant for stealing designs of components and devices.

According to DRAMeXchange, a division of global research firm TrendForce, in the first quarter of 2013 smartphone shipments increased steadily worldwide, with total shipments reaching 216.4 million units, 9.4% Quarter on Quarter growth. Since the beginning of 2012, smartphone shipment figures have been up every quarter despite seasonality, indication the electronic device is here to stay.

Looking at first-tier manufacturers' shipment volumes, Samsung continues to take the lead in the first quarter as the maker uses its vertically integrated supply chain, global marketing, and various sales channels to its advantage. Samsung's smartphones series is expected to see 65M units shipped this quarter, which accounts for 30% of the global market.

As for Apple, the iPhone 5 has been unable to satisfy consumers' desire for innovation, and shipments were unsatisfactory as Android manufacturers have stepped up to the plate. The Cupertino company shipped a mere 37.5 million units in the first quarter, giving them 17.3% market share, a decrease of 1.2% from the previous quarter. Currently, circumstances surrounding the announcement of Apple's new device are unclear, while Samsung, HTC, Sony, and other global corporations are planning product unveilings for the second quarter, which will likely lead to another dip in Apple's shipments.

Nokia and HTC are other companies who have found themselves having smaller shares in the beginning of this year, with Nokia down 0.9% and HTC down 0.4%. Sony and Lenovo seem to be among the few companies that have actually registered a growth. Sony, which recently launched its Xperia Z smartphone, has climbed all the way from 3.5% to... 3.8%, while Lenovo currently controls 3.9% of the market, up from 3.3% in 2012.

When someone notices and makes a prototype of your logo, it just goes to show how excellent you are doing and this is exactly what Android is for this guy that created a LEGO bugdroid. Enter: Bugdroid. The ubiquitous Android character may now very well be a definitive LEGO masterpiece.

Marc Young, alias GLHTurbo, created a beta LEGO version of the Bugdroid and at present, has over 10,000 supporters already. The prototype includes movable antennae, arms and head and consists of over 200 lime-colored bricks and some special parts. It could cost more than $30 to build on your own, if you want something like it.

The success of Android is measured on the number of users and smartphone sales. Additionally, it can now be possibly measured on the number of LEGO Bugdroids released, assuming that it gets to pass review stage and actually gets sold by LEGO.
