Dell

Today, Dell has announced that the company is quitting the whole smartphone business and pulling-out its products from the market starting from next year. If you already bought a Dell smartphone... Hard luck!!

This news was delivered by Jeff Clarke, Dell's head of consumer business at the Dell World Conference. The reason behind the decision is that "It needs a lot of investments to really be successful".

gsmarena 002 Dell kills the Streak 5, delivers a brief eulogy

The device that was too big for a phone and too small to be a tablet has finally been put to rest. Dell website informs anyone still interested in the now deceased Streak 5 about its departure.

Unfortunately, I cannot find myself to agree with the "Its been a great ride" part about the message on the website and Dell has itself to blame. Right from the confused form-factor to the outdated software and the high price, the Streak 5 was a recipe for disaster and Dell could have surely done better. If only they knew what they wanted it to be, a smartphone or a tablet.

Dell

Aside from its Android tablets, Dell is preparing to return to the "Windows tablet scene." What we have here is the upcoming Dell Peju, which will be launched at some point in October. We are talking about a high-end device with Intel Core i5 processor, 4GB of RAM, 64 or 128 GB of SSD storage, 10.1-inch 1920×1080 pixels Gorilla Glass-protected touchscreen, 5,500 mAh battery (6-8 hours) and 3G/4G and Wi-Fi connectivity.

In addition, there are two cameras (5-megapixel on the back and 1.3-megapixel front-facing one), USB slots, mini VGA and HDMI out. All this is packed in a box measuring 10.8×6.7×0.63 inches and weighing 1.9 lbs. Windows 7 Pro will run the show, though allowing upgrade to Windows 8, once its out.

As a company, DELL is not particularly well known for the design of its products. Aside the Adamo series of laptops, most of the tech giant creations are utilitarian by design. The leak of a 7-inch tablet prototype however, is about to make me completely change my mind about the design philosophy of the Texas based company with its sliding-out, split QWERTY keyboard, it is simply gorgeous.

There is no information on the OS which the tablet will be running, or any hardware specs aside a rear camera with unknown resolution. I personally wonder what will the space in the middle of the sliding keyboard be used about is going to be a touch pad of some sort, or is it simply going to bear the DELL logo.
