Instagram has becoming the most popular photo editing App in the Google Play. Some think that Instagram is nothing but hipster foolishness, and others wonder if there may be some value in a service like Instagram.

It looks like Instagram for Android has passed the 10 million+ download barrier, and it only took 22 days to hit that number. That is a pretty solid growth rate. The app was quick out of the gate, hitting 1 million downloads in less than 24 hours, and 5 million downloads in less than a week. Overall, that puts the number of total Instagram users almost at 50 million, 47 million to be exact.

Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg has let slip that his company plans to buy popular photo-sharing app Instagram. Facebook will pick up the social app, which got its own long-awaited Android version, for a cool $1 billion in cash and shares. Zuck confirmed the news on his personal blog, adding that the deal will not affect Instagram integration with competing social networks:

"We think the fact that Instagram is connected to other services beyond Facebook is an important part of the experience. We plan on keeping features like the ability to post to other social networks, the ability to not share your Instagrams on Facebook if you want, and the ability to have followers and follow people separately from your friends on Facebook."

Facebook to Acquire Instagram

MENLO PARK, CALIF.-April 9, 2012-Facebook announced today that it has reached an agreement to acquire Instagram, a fun, popular photo-sharing app for mobile devices.

The total consideration for San Francisco-based Instagram is approximately $1 billion in a combination of cash and shares of Facebook. The transaction, which is subject to customary closing conditions, is expected to close later this quarter.

Mark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO of Facebook, posted about the transaction on his Timeline:

I'm excited to share the news that we've agreed to acquire Instagram and that their talented team will be joining Facebook.

For years, we've focused on building the best experience for sharing photos with your friends and family. Now, we'll be able to work even more closely with the Instagram team to also offer the best experiences for sharing beautiful mobile photos with people based on your interests.

We believe these are different experiences that complement each other. But in order to do this well, we need to be mindful about keeping and building on Instagram's strengths and features rather than just trying to integrate everything into Facebook.

That's why we're committed to building and growing Instagram independently. Millions of people around the world love the Instagram app and the brand associated with it, and our goal is to help spread this app and brand to even more people.

We think the fact that Instagram is connected to other services beyond Facebook is an important part of the experience. We plan on keeping features like the ability to post to other social networks, the ability to not share your Instagrams on Facebook if you want, and the ability to have followers and follow people separately from your friends on Facebook.

These and many other features are important parts of the Instagram experience and we understand that. We will try to learn from Instagram's experience to build similar features into our other products. At the same time, we will try to help Instagram continue to grow by using Facebook's strong engineering team and infrastructure.

This is an important milestone for Facebook because it's the first time we've ever acquired a product and company with so many users. We don't plan on doing many more of these, if any at all. But providing the best photo sharing experience is one reason why so many people love Facebook and we knew it would be worth bringing these two companies together.

We're looking forward to working with the Instagram team and to all of the great new experiences we're going to be able to build together.

Instagram (a facebook Company) has grown tremendously after it arrived on Android, and now the photo manipulation and sharing service can brag about having 80 million active users who have shared around 4 billion photographs.

With Android devices covering virtually all price tiers in a huge number of countries, Instagram has also grown along to be a truly global brand. If you still haven't tried it out, Instagram is a neat little program that gives you a set of filters to make your photos look more vintage and cooler.

Recently, Facebook announced it's acquiring the app and as soon as the deal closes we expect the service to get tighter Facebook integration, and - who knows if those rumors about a Facebook phone turn out to be true, maybe an even wider following along.

You may recall that Facebook purchased Instagram App for $1 Billion. However, Facebook did promise to keep Instagram as a separate entity and not fold it into Facebook proper, but that doesn't mean that there won't be some data sharing as time goes on. And, that time is coming pretty soon as Instagram has shown off its new privacy policy with does include sharing data with Facebook.

The change in the Instagram privacy policy comes after Facebook had made similar changes to allow for data-sharing between itself and Instagram. With the changes to Instagram's policy, Instagram will be able to "share user content and your information," including cookies, location data, device identifiers, and other information with Facebook-owned companies.

However, Instagram says on its Offiical blog that "nothing has changed about your photos' ownership or who can see them," which is great to hear given that Facebook's copyright claims on photos is overly broad.
