The Galaxy S5 was unveiled in 2014 as their flagship device by Samsung and back then, it was a pioneer in terms of the innovations that it brought to the Samsung smartphone line-up. It was the first Samsung smartphone ever to sport a heartbeat sensor, a fingerprint sensor, as well as having dust and water resistance capabilities. Nonetheless, it is over two year old now and smartphones do have a tendency to age fast. If you have a S5, then you would be pleased to know that Samsung has not forgotten about it yet. The latest reports suggest that after rolling Android M as an OTA update in South Korea earlier, the Korean manufacturer has now started to roll out the same updates for the S5 in Trinidad and Tobago as well.

As far as we know, the latest updates are being released for the SM-G900M and earlier, they were upgrading the SM-G900L in South Korea with Android Marshmallow. Provided that you are in Trinidad and Tobago, go to Settings, About device and Check for updates to see if the update has arrived on your Galaxy S5 yet. Once the 1.47GB package does arrive and you complete the update, the Android version on your phone should change to 6.0.1 and the firmware version to G900MUBU1CPC3.

If you are neither a resident of South Korea or Trinidad and Tobago, you will have to wait longer for the update unfortunately. If it is any consolation, the update is coming to your Samsung Galaxy S5 for sure, albeit a little later.

Apparently smartphone makers are planning to ship the Android 6.0 Marshmallow updates to their devices and these news are getting leaked. Yesterday we came across an alleged roadmap for Lenovo, and before that day HTC's plans also got out, and now according to a post by SamsungViet.vn, Samsung's plans are also leaked as well.

12 devices have been mentioned in that list and those are ones which will receive the update in Q1 2016, and with four more slated to receive the update in Q2 2016. We're not quite sure if this list is final and the devices mentioned in the list are the ones are the confirmed for now.

Anyway it lists devices like the Galaxy Note 5, Note Edge, Note 4, Note 4 Duos, S6 Edge+, S6 Edge, S6, S6 Duos, S5, S5 Neo, and the S5 LTE-A as being the handsets that will receive the update in Q1 2016. The Galaxy Alpha, Tab A, Tab S2 9.7, and the Tab S2 8.0 are supposed to receive the update in Q2 2016.

It's difficult to confirm the authenticity of the list but it does seem to be in accordance with another leaked plan from November. It is also in sync with an earlier report in August that said Samsung devices would get the update in 2016.

Google is holding an important event on September,29th in San Francisco, the tech giant will be announced TWO Nexus flagships. Yes, looks like Google is preparing some very cool stuff for us on this special event.

 

Google Nexus 2016

 

One of those flagships will be a smaller Nexus device with 5-inch display built by LG. The second device will be a larger one with 6-inch display built by Huawei. We have no confirmed info about the hardware specs or prices of those devices, yet. 

 

This will be the first Huawei Nexus device to be announced since the launch of the Nexus line-up, but it's the third time Google has partnered with LG on a Nexus phone. Both devices will be the first in the market to launch with Android 6.0 Marshmallow Pre-installed.

 

Android 6.0 Announcement and Updates

 

Along with these two Nexus devices, Google will also announce the official release of Android 6.0 Marshmallow final version, after 3 developer previews released in the past 2 months. The final version will pack all bug fixes that was reported in the past previews along with some new features. The current Google Nexus lineup should get marshmallow factory images be early October.

Faster updates ? You must be talking about Google Nexus devices... No, this time it's HTC, the Taiwanese company just announced a new flagship device, HTC One A9, with Android 6.0 Marshmallow Pre-installed, as you may know HTC sense 7.0 is the reason of delaying every update due to the development & integration process with every new Android version.

 

Well, HTC has officially announced through its USA twitter account that it will be speeding up this process which will make the HTC One A9 receive every Android update within 15 days of the Nexus line having received it. That's a very bold promise, and one that's unique in the Android world so far.

A report from a Strategy Analytics, shows that Apple and Samsung are the top smartphones vendor in the world in the fourth Quarter of 2014. Surprisingly, Apple and Samsung sold the EXACT same amount of devices in the Q4,2014 which is 74.5 million each.

 

 

For the year as a whole, Samsung remained at the top with total shipments of 317.2 million, which translates into 24.7% share of the market. This compares to 2013, when the company's overall smartphone shipments stood at 319.8 million, giving it a 32.3% market share.

 

Samsung continues to face intense competition from Apple at the higher-end of the smartphone market, from Huawei in the middle-tiers, and from Xiaomi and others at the entry-level," the report said, adding that the company "may soon have to consider taking over rivals, such as Blackberry, in order to revitalize growth this year.

HTC was rumored to release it's first Android Wear Smartwatch, or its first Smart Wearable device. According to the latest reports apparently, the company has decided not to try to compete with LG, Samsung, Motorola and others, and has scrapped its Smartwatch project.

 

A report published on Friday, suggests that the rising costs of producing the watch was one of the reasons behind HTC's decision to cancel it. In addition, it is believed that the watch being devised by the company lacked any innovation or special design that would allow it to challenge the competition.

 

The smartwatch market is becoming more and more crowded, with Asus recently joining the group. Right now, there is a heavy air of anticipation as Apple's long awaited iWatch is expected to be unveiled on September 9th. As usual with Apple, the expectations are extremely high. While it is probable that Apple's timepiece will see the light of day this coming Tuesday, the product will probably not be made available to consumers until next year.

We all know HTC Android skins (Sense) and Apps, they're smart, clean and elegant. Sadly, these Apps and skins are only available for HTC devices... but this is about to change. A Report from Recode, indicates that HTC wants its own-build software to be available for the rest of Android devices.

 

HTC Creative Labs has started to develop apps for Android phones in general, not just HTC, the labs first products is "HTC Zoe" which has the power to stitch together up to 16 videos or images with your own soundtrack. We hope to see more and more HTC Apps available for Android smartphones in general, Especially HTC Blinkfeed and HTC Sense 6 launcher.

HTC executives reveales the company's plans for a wearable device in a conversation with Re/code. In line with past rumors, the Taiwanese manufacturer confirmed that it will not enter the market for such products until next year.

 

According to Jason Mackenzie, the head of HTC Americas, the company originally had plans to launch a wearable in this time frame. However, the gadget is not ready for the spotlight just yet.

 

 

Furthermore, Drew Bamford, the man in charge of the HTC Creative Labs team that works on wearables, took a jab at the competition. He pointed to the media that none of the current manufacturers has gotten the wearable device concept right.

If you own an HTC One M8 or One M7 Google Play Edition, you'll get your Lollipop treat very soon. Google is already rolling-out Android 5.0 Lollipop updates to its Nexus line-up right now. HTC already got the source code of the Lollipop earlier this month, regular HTC One devices will get the update by Feb,2015 and GPE is during this month.

 

 

According to a new Tweet from an HTC's Rep, they ran into a small problem but they are still targeting to a Friday release. So, if you have an HTC One M8 GPE or M7 GPE you should get the update by the Eend of this week.

HTC promised us that it will update most of its latest devices to Android 5.0 Lollipop in 90 days starting from the day Google release the official final version of Lollipop.

 

Many HTC users still waiting on confirmed info from the company, Google already released the SDK 5.0 along with API 21 as another updated Developer Preview.

Verizon Wireless has officially roll out support the Samsung Pay, if you have a Verizon Galaxy S6, S6 edge, S6 edge+ or Note 5, you'll have proper Samsung Pay support now by doing a software update then download the Samsung Pay app.

At this time just five banking institutions are on board - American Express, Bank of America, Citi Bank, U.S. Bank and Synchrony Financial.

Bank support should be expanding over time, so you'll just have to be patient if your bank isn't supported just yet. But if you meet all of the requirements, you're now good to go with Samsung Pay!

In addition to support for Samsung Pay, the software update also brings along security fixes for the latest vulnerabilities.

Are you a fan of the curved or Edge displays by Samsung? If not so, then you better start getting used to them because Samsung might not make flat screen variants for its future Galaxy S smartphones. In the words of Koh Dong-jin, who is the president of Samsung Mobiles,

"Samsung has considered that it would make the Edge display as the identity of the Galaxy S smartphone line-up if the company can provide consumers differentiated user experience through software and user-friendly functions (for the curved screen)."

We are pretty much sure that the reception and sales of the newly released Galaxy Note 7 with dual curved display will play a very important role in determining the future of the Galaxy S8. As no flat screen Note 7 variants were released this year, if this move turns out to be a success, the S8 may very well, follow the same trend next year. Even if they do not eliminate the flat display completely by 2017, the focus will definitely shift onto the Edge displays, provided the Note 7 manages to satisfy the customers as much as Samsung hopes it will.

OpenSignal Inc. thrive on smartphone statistics and took the time to plot Android Brand fragmentation. It was a Huge undertaking as the dominant smartphone platform has splintered in many different ways.

 

First off is that Android devices are made by a myriad of manufacturers. Samsung was by far the biggest with 43% market share and 12 of the 13 most popular devices. Despite the domination, the company's market share has actually slipped, last year it had 47.5% of the market.

 

 

Sony comes in a distant second with 4.8% market share. There's a large number of old Sony devices out there, some dating from the Sony Ericsson days. LG and Motorola also have decently-sized shares. According to Kwon Oh Hyun, who leads the components business, Samsung will also focus on smart home and health devices, as well as business-to-business market.

Currently, The highest resolution display in the Smartphones Market is the Quad-HD with Pixel density up to (500 - 700ppi) at max. Samsung is looking on breaking this record once and for all...

 

According to a confirmed reports from Korea, Samsung partnered with 13 companies and the South Korean government to develop the World's first 11K mobile display with a pixel density of 2250ppi and a resolution of (11264 x 8448), which takes the Smartphone displays to an Insane new level of clarity.

 

 

This 11K display needs a super GPU to handle this kind of High-res Graphics. The Korean giant is going to invest $26.5 million into the R&D of this new 11K display. According to the Executive Director of Samsung Display, this might look like "over specification", but the breakthrough would help the Korean industry in the future.

 

Samsung's goal with this is to implement a "3D effect". Details are scarce, but the way Korean outlet ETNews puts it, such a gloriously high-resolution screen is able to simulate the effect of a 3D screen through some kind of optical illusion. This 11K display panel will be available by 2018 in the company's flagships.

Apple released a new lineup of devices this year... the iPad Pro, iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus and Apple Watch. All these new devices are running iOS 9 and powered by Apple A9 chipset which is said to be the most advanced and fastest CPU so far.

What you may not know that all these devices are actually Powered by Samsung, the Korean giant is the main manufacturer and supplier for the Apple A9 chip. Apple have chosen Samsung to build its CPUs since the Apple A6, admitting that Samsung is the best hardware supplier in the industry even though the companies are in a serious competition in markets and court too.

 

 

Also, Samsung has been allegedly employed to provide between 3,000 and 4,000 12-inch silicon wafers for the Apple S1 SiP (which powers the Apple Watch) each month, based on Samsung's 28nm manufacturing process for all Apple Watch variants.

 

 

This clearly tells that Samsung has a big part of the Apple's devices success.

Every time we hear about troubling news regarding Samsung's Galaxy Note series, we can't help but feel a sense of Déjà vu from 2016. Up till date though, nothing major had surfaced that could put the Note 8 in jeopardy this year, but the latest news report from PiunikaWeb is suggesting that the Note 8 could be facing a big problem. Some users of the Note 8 have officially complained to Samsung and on the official forum of the company about their device getting switched off permanently.

Apparently, some devices could not be switched on after they had shut down automatically on losing the entire charge and going down to 0%.  All attempts at charging these devices have since failed and the whole device has not responded in any way to user interactions. It won't even start in Safe mode unfortunately and if this turns out to be a widespread problem, Samsung could have a serious issue on their hands once again!

The Galaxy S10 is all set to be unveiled in less than a month's time and this year around, there will be three devices in the S10 line-up, instead of two. However, the existence of the S10, S10 Plus and the S10 E (Lite) is old news now, but what this render from the famous leakster Evan Blass does is that it gives us a very clear and side-by-side look at the upcoming devices.

If rumors are to be believed, then Samsung will also release a fourth Galaxy S10 smartphone, which will be called the Galaxy S10 X. The S10 X is rumored to feature a huge 6.7-inch display and even 5G, but we will have to wait to find out if there really is any truth to this rumor. Even if it's true though, Samsung will likely keep it restricted to specific markets such as South Korea and luckily, the US as well.

Samsung is reportedly rolling out November's security patch and updates to the Samsung Galaxy devices including this year's Samsung Galaxy S20. The security patch is meant to overcome several serious security vulnerabilities in the Android OS. The Android security bulletin, published on Nov 2, 2020, contains details on security vulnerabilities affecting Android devices and not just the Galaxy devices.

 

If you own one of the Galaxy devices, you will be getting the new software update automatically which improves the stability of the camera app, Wi-Fi connectivity, and also includes several other security updates. We highly recommend you to install the new security update as it addresses all of the high or critical vulnerabilities known so far. If you leave it without updating, your phone could be exploited by a hacker to achieve remote code execution, privilege escalation, or denial of service. The new update patches several problems being discovered in the operating system's core framework, media framework, and system.

 

Two important bugs existed in the framework, two high-risk escalation bugs, a high severity information disclosure bug, and finally a high severity DoS bug. The security update also patches one critical and one high remote code execution bug in Android's media framework as well as one high severity escalation of privilege bug and one moderate one. The patch works on 4 bugs, one escalation of privilege bug, one DoS bug, and one critical remote code execution bug. For the owners of Galaxy S10 5G, the latest update is due in a few days.

The good news is that Google has now rolled out an official update for Android powered devices that will warn you as soon as spam callers call your number. The bad news is that this update and the ensuing features are only available to Android One and Nexus devices. We bet hardcore Google loyalists are feeling pretty smug right now!

"Spam callers be gone! Today, we're beginning to update your Google Phone app with spam protection on #Nexus and #Android One devices to warn you about potential spam callers,"

Spam Protection should become effective as soon as you download and install the update but in order to use the feature, you will have to have Called ID turned on from the settings menu of your phone. In addition to providing protection against the spammers, there will also be an option to report the shady numbers as spam. You can simply block the number from the app itself if they continue to bother you with repeated phone calls.

Google released a standalone Slides application for Apple iOS devices. Google Slides joined its already available Docs and Sheets relatives in the App Store.

 

As expected, Google Slides for iOS allows you to sync your spreadsheets with Android devices, as well as laptop or desktop computers. All you need is your Google ID.

 

Offline editing is available too. Your work progress will be saved to the cloud once you go back online. You can also edit and update already Microsoft PowerPoint files.

When it comes to security of the Nexus devices. Google is practically living a nightmare. The most recent bug in that Google needs to fix is consumer-facing and exploitable without any geeky tricks. It seems the Nexus devices are vulnerable to an exploit that lets users bypass factory reset protection.

For the uninitiated - factory reset protection has been kept in place to help you to keep your device password protected in case someone tries to reset the factory settings. It is supposed to render the phone practically unusable without the password, but a work around has emerged that does the job by pressing series of buttons. Google pushed a security patch that covered the fix for this issue, but RootJunky - the first person to report the bug - has come up with yet another video that shows vulnerability of the device in spite of the patch released in January.

Although it has become more difficult to exploit the loophole, it is still achievable.This essentially sends out a message that the development and quality testing are done thoroughly. Google might take more time to provide fix for this bug, as they would like to get it right in the next release.

Google's ground-breaking 3D-spacial mapping project, Project Tango, has long been under development at the company's Advanced Technology and Projects division. The captivating new concept has always been very promising, but also strictly confined to future research and development. Now it seems this is finally changing and we might just get the chance to experience some real-world implementations of the Google's 3D technology on the consumer market.

 

 

It seems that project ARA is finally leaving the development realm and transferring over to Google's current project portfolio. What this actually means is that the new 3D technology will not follow the fate of Google glass and is set be incorporated into actual products in the near future.

 

 

In a short term perspective this might mean that Google's Project Tango tablet development kit might just be marketed as a consumer device. While owning the 7-inch NVIDIA Tegra K1, 4GB of RAM beast of a tablet is exciting by itself, Google still hasn't revealed any of its plans for actual uses of the product. The technology is all there and the most apparent gaming implementations are clear, but little to no consumer content is currently available.

Up until yesterday, Google's new voice assistant was exclusively available to the Pixel and the Pixel XL. However, Google has now made it official that the company is currently rolling out Google Assistant to multiple devices that are running on Android Marshmallow 6.0 or higher and Android Nougat 7.0 or higher. We knew that some of the upcoming devices like the LG G6 and the Moto G5/G5 Plus were going to come with the AI powered voice assistant right out of the box, but this is a pleasantly surprising and new development. The original announcement was made at the MWC earlier and now it's happening as you read this.

The United States is of course the first to get the personal assistant, but Australia, Canada and the UK should also start to receive the same soon enough. By the way, in case you are wondering if a package will need to be downloaded via OTA, let us assure you that it won't be necessary. The eligible devices will simply see Google Assistant show up on their phones. Long pressing the Home button on an updated device will bring up the AI assistant, actively replacing Google Search. It is now official, all iOS devices will be getting Google's latest AI powered voice assistant. It looks like Siri's days of monopoly are finally over for iDevices. No date was confirmed but the news was made official at the I/O earlier. It would have come as a complete surprise, had it not been for an earlier report by Android Police which hinted at the same. According to Android Authority, "it will "likely" combine its voice command features with the chat functions found on the Google Allo version of Assistant." It would be interesting to see how they implement it on the iPhone.

Microsoft Cortana is already available on both the Google Play Store and the App Store, but till date, the Google Assistant had been exclusive to certain Android smartphones only. It looks like the competition is about to get really hot for AI assistants on both platforms sooner than we previously thought. If only Bixby (outside South Korea) had a bit more to bring to the table, things could have been even more interesting.

Today Google released the December report of its distribution chart for the Android platform which is targeted for the developers (it can be seen in the image below). This primarily tells us about the progress it has made in terms of market share in each month when it comes to the different Operating System variants. The newest flavour of Android is version 6.0 Marshmallow, which now powers 0.5% of devices out there. There is an increment of 0.3% in the last month. Also in the same time period, Lollipop's market share has gone up to 29.5%, which is almost 4% more than what was in November.

With 36.6% of the market, KitKat's share has decreased slightly and the three Jelly Bean releases altogether are now at 26.9%, around 2% less than last month. Both Ice Cream Sandwich and Gingerbread have lost some market share, and for some unknown reasons the historic Froyo OS is still stagnant at 0.2% share. It is also evident that the devices running on older variants of the OS are not included. It is expected that Marshmallow's share will increase in the first half of 2016, owing to the upgrade of the devices bought in 2015.

Google has published the latest Android platform distribution shares, unveiling that Marshmallow - which is the newest variant of its Android mobile operating system - is now powering 0.7% of all active Android devices across the globe. That's marginally more than the December figure of 0.5%.

Lollipop in the meantime got 3% increment in share, touching a total of 32.6% this month. But, KitKat retains the top spot with 36.1% Android market share, though there is a little bit decline from the 36.6% share reported in last month.

Android Marshmallow just reached 15% recently in terms of the percentage of devices running on the OS and that's good news. Android Lollipop still leads the chart with a whopping 35.5% of all current Android devices (divided in between the two versions) in the market running on it. Even Android 4.4 KitKat is enjoying a huge market share at 29.2%. Android Jelly Bean continues to power 16.6% (all versions from 4.1 to 4.3 included) of the Android devices out there till date, but if you go before that to the likes of Ice Cream Sandwich and Gingerbread, the numbers are quite low at 1.6% and 1.7% respectively. Finally, Android Froyo is the oldest Android version to still be used by some users on their smartphones and the percentage is a negligible 0.1%.

Although Marshmallow is lagging behind, it is definitely gaining in size and it's good to see. However, Android 7 Nougat is almost out and once it is out, it will surely take the crown as the most advanced Android OS with the least number of devices running it, as is the system with Android devices unfortunately. In the API usage situation, the ancient OpenGL 2.0 is at the top of the list with 46% of all Android powered devices running it. OpenGL 3.0 is used by 42.6% of the population, while OpenGL 3.1 is utilized by a disappointing 11.4%. The Vulkan API is the latest and most powerful of the bunch, but it will take some time before enough devices start using it for the API to be even listed.

Google surprised a lot of people when they released Android N in its beta version yesterday, especially since Android M itself was released just a few months ago in last October. Many of the market leading smartphone manufacturers have not even been able to update their high-end devices to Marshmallow yet. Samsung is the worldwide leader when it comes to Android smartphones and things do not exactly look good when they have not been able to update their major flagship devices like the Galaxy Note 5 to Marshmallow in all locations yet; especially, since the next iteration of the OS is already out.

Back in February, it did look like Samsung was about to make sure that Marshmallow reaches all their high-end devices everywhere, within a few months. However, things did not pan out that way and many regions are still waiting for it impatiently. Taking the fact into account that Android 6 went official about six months ago, it seems like Samsung is living up to its name for being slow and unpredictable with software updates. After seeing how slow Samsung is even with their most expensive phones from 2015, things are looking really dim for our low or mid-range Samsung smartphones as far as being updated to Android Marshmallow is concerned.

A total of 1 Billion Android devices shipped over the last year (2014) alone, as reported by Strategy Analytics. The analyst firm estimates 1.3 billion smartphones were shipped in 2014, of that over 1 billion ran Android (this works out to 81% market share).

 

Smartphone shipments grew 30% compared to 2013 (from 1B to 1.3B). Androids alone went from 0.8B to 1B in that period, while iOS lost some ground in terms of market share. It still shipped around 193 million devices, up from 153 million units in 2013.

 

 

The third horse in the race, Windows Phone, kept pace with the growth of the market and stayed at 3% share (shipping just under 39 million units).

Google has just published the Android platform distribution up to June 1st,2015. Last month, Lollipop was trying very hard to reach 10% of all Android installs, and it finally did manage to get there.

 

 

What's more ? Android Lollipop is now powering 12.4% of devices worldwide, if we count both releases called that together. That said, KitKat is still the prevailing version among devices out there, reaching 39.2% of the market this time around. Interestingly, KitKat's share has been dropping steadily for a couple of months or so perhaps those Lollipop updates are starting to make themselves felt.

 

The three iterations of Android collectively called Jelly Bean are still (together) in second position, with 37.4% share right now, down from 39.2% a month ago. Then we have Ice Cream Sandwich with 5.1% (down by 0.2%), Gingerbread with 5.6% (down by 0.1%), and Froyo with 0.3% (which, surprisingly, is flat).

One of the first things that Google announced at its big event today is that Android just keeps on growing. Google CEO Sundar Pichai said on stage that at the moment, there are more than 1.4 billion active Android devices in the world. "Active" in this context means that they've been used within the last 30 days.

 

This number is up 40%, from 1 billion, back in June of 2014. Keep in mind that this doesn't represent the total number of Android devices that were ever sold, it's just those that are still active, or have been so in the last month.

 

The Google Play Store is now being used on more than 1 billion devices. Again, this means 1 billion phones and tablets have used Google's content store in the last 30 days. So it appears that the Play Store either isn't installed or simply isn't used on a staggering 400 million devices out there.
