Facebook Data center

Facebook latest data center is being built in North Carolina and the next one will built closer to the North Pole.

The company confirmed Thursday that it plans to build a server center in Lulea, Sweden, about 60 miles outside of the Arctic Circle. The new center will be Facebook first outside of the United States.

Facebook told the Associated Press that the cool climate of Lulea which in summer months rarely sees temperatures above 80 degrees Fahrenheit is one reason for the decision to build a data center there. Cooler outside air temperatures make it less expensive to keep servers from overheating.

The new facility, which is scheduled to be completed by 2014, will consist of three 300,000-square-foot server buildings and be powered entirely by nearby hydropower stations.
