Latest News - / Samsung Updates - Posts

We are nearing the end of September and Samsung is still in the process of rolling out Android Security updates for the month of August it seems. The Galaxy S5 Neo has just started receiving the security patch from last month in Europe according to sources. We know that it's an old set now, but September 19 still seems a bit too late for delivering a patch for August! Nevertheless, it's here and you should be checking your smartphone to see if it has arrived on your S5 Neo yet.

The firmware carries version number G903FXXS1BQH1 with it, which contains 28 fixes for common vulnerabilities and exposures found in all Android powered devices, alongside 12 of Samsung's own fixes for vulnerabilities in its own overlying UI. The bad news is that the European version of the S5 Neo is still not receiving Nougat 7.0, although the handset is receiving the same in other regions like Canada. Let's hope Samsung releases the Android 7.0 update for the aging handset soon in Europe.

The Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy Note 8 are the current kings of Samsung's smartphone lineup, so it's no surprise that Samsung is already working towards getting the latest version of Android ready for these smartphones. However, it seems like the Oreo update will arrive on the Galaxy S8 series sooner than Nougat 7.0 did on the S7 lineup. We have come to this conclusion after finding out that the Galaxy S8 was seen on Geekbench yesterday, testing out an Android Oreo powered firmware. It was spotted by GalaxyClub and was brought to mass attention by SamMobile.

You can check out the benchmark results in the screenshot above and apart from the OS version, nothing much seems to have changed though as the scores are pretty much par for the S8. After the Galaxy S8, S8+ and the Note 8, it is expected that Samsung will update the S7 lineup next.

The situation is a bit confusing now because Samsung has likely already provided the necessary patches to take care of the infamous BlueBorne vulnerability, but an app on the Play Store which checks your device to see if it is still vulnerable is clearly showing that the Note 8 is not yet safe. Why is this happening you may ask? The answer is quite simple really! Samsung patched the BlueBorne security gap on their own with the August patch itself, while the BlueBorne Vulnerability Scanner app only marks Android phones with the September patch as "safe."

As you can imagine, this should actually be an epic win for Samsung, but as fate would have it, the Note 8 is receiving negative publicity because of it! The truth is that Samsung managed to patch a major flaw in the OS even before Google did it and that deserves some applause! The bottom line is that if you own a Galaxy Note 8, you should rest easy because as far as the software side is concerned, Samsung has you covered for now. Given my recent experience, I am not so sure about the hardware part though!
