Nokia Lumia

Nokia sale rumors continue with a prediction that the company will sell its smartphone unit to Microsoft in a deal will be announced as early as the first half of 2012. The Finnish company share price rose over 3-percent over the speculation, Bloomberg reports, though Nokia itself remains adamant that a deal is not in the offing.

Danske Bank analysts maintain that a sale of the smartphone segment at least "makes sense", with Microsoft the likely buyer. Nokia, though, is keen to move past speculation of a sale. "We put these rumors to rest a long time ago" spokesperson Doug Dawson insists.

Nokia Maps 3D

Nokia unveiled its Nokia Maps 3D back in April of this year and they were certainly cool. Nokia has announced some really cool new features. One of the new features is the ability for the user to search for local attractions, restaurants, and shops. That means you can see the shop you want to visit and then get directions how to get there.

The directions are given on maps with photorealistic views of the locations you are looking for. You do have to install a plug-in to get the 3D maps. After installing that plug-in, you can enter addresses in the search field as well as business names and points of interest you want to see. It will then find the thing you are looking for and put it on the screen for you to check out.

Images and specs have leaked of an unannounced Nokia device, bound for China with a dual-mode quad-band GSM and TD-SCDMA network codenamed 801T. In the specs sheet that was uncovered it says it uses the Symbian^3 and not WP7. It could be Anna or Belle.

The screen will have an nHD resolution and will measure about 4.3-inch, the camera is an 8 MP unit and there are no visible buttons on the front.

There is no word on the processor but the quoted RAM is 256MB, which does not exactly scream high end these days. And it is a hefty device at 171 g.
Being dual-mode GSM and TD-SCDMA device, the 801T will be able to operate globally on most networks.

Symbian

At the Developer Day in Mexico, Nokia shed some light on the next two Symbian versions Carla and Donna plus further information on the Symbian Belle update rollout.

Symbian Carla is intended for smartphones with a 1GHz processor or higher and will be released in late 2012 or early 2013. It is going to offer a new web browser, new widgets, lots of new NFC capabilities and Dolby Surround audio enhancement.

The processor minimum requirement means all the Symbian^3 and Symbian Anna handsets (N8, C6-01, C7, E7, E6, X7-00) are not going to get this version
Symbian Donna will be exclusive to dual-core processors, but at the current release intervals, most probably we won't see it before the end of 2013 or the early 2014.

Nokia

Rest assured cameraphone fans, Nokia is still thinking about you. The manufacturer of the N8 is already working on its successor, which will come out some time next year. The confirmation came at the Nokia Lumia 800 launch event in Russia and was brought by the company VP Eric Bertman so its pretty official.

According to him, next year Nokia will be releasing something even better than the N8 in 2012. He did not provide any more details, like the OS that the device will be using. Previously we heard that Symbian is very much on the cards, but Windows Phone certainly seems the more probable platform of choice of the new cameraphone king.

Nokia Research loves its concept phones the flexible Kinetic concept was one of our favorite things at Nokia World last month and for the team 25th anniversary they have produced this, the Nokia GEM. Built around the idea of the entire phone surface being a touch-sensitive display front, sides and back GEM learns from your most common tasks and adapts its default appearance to suit, so if you play games most of the time the phone will usually look like a gamepad.

However, there is also the possibility of resizable QWERTY and numeric keypads, which can be pushed along with the ongoing IM conversation around to the back of the phone while you look up details on the front. The flared upper edges work as an app carousel, shuffled around with a thumb and then dragged to the main display to launch them, and everything is resizable.

Because so much of the body is given over to screen, when you run an app say, triggering the camera with a circle gesture shortcut the whole phone can adapt its appearance to suit. Alternatively, as in Nokia non-functional mockup shown in these photos, you could have browser favorites circling the edges and media playback controls on the top.
