Facebook Messenger for Windows 7

Facebook today began allowing a limited test group of users to download a new Facebook Messenger for Windows 7 desktop client. It provides access to Chat, the Ticker feed, and notifications. Facebook is looking to gauge interest in desktop access to these real-time features that could keep users engaged with the service all day without having to keep a browser window open. The client could become popular, considering that the Facebook-integrated Windows Live Messenger desktop client that lets you Chat with friends as well as third-party instant messaging contacts is the top app on the Facebook Platform with 18.2 million daily active users.

Facebook is pushing to get more users onto its Chat service. This summer, it released its standalone Messenger app for iOS, Android, and BlackBerry as new distribution points for Chat. Through Messenger, Facebook is challenging instant messaging, SMS and to some extent, email.

Remember the HTC Status and HTC Salsa from ATT, Facebook phones that were not exactly up to their titular status. But just hours ago, reporters over at All Things Digital claim that social-networking company itself is working with a cell phone manufacturer to build and its code-named Buffy. Most likely it will not be only with just a tiny little Facebook button on the front.

All Things Digital claims that "the phone is planned to run on a modified version of Android that Facebook has tweaked heavily to deeply integrate its services." Tweaking Android heavily seems like the common theme of every company out there not named Google. It is also reported that Facebook is working with Taiwanese smartphone maker HTC to build the smartphone, although Facebook had also allegedly considered partnering with Samsung to make the device, but went with HTC instead.

Skype

There are new Skype betas available for download, bringing the Facebook video-calling feature for both PC and Mac users. Back in July Facebook launched its video-calling feature, courtesy of Skype, and now you can video-chat with your friends straight from the Skype app too.

Starting a video call is easy enough. All you need is the latest beta of Skype, where you sign in with your Facebook account and voila you have enabled video calls with your Facebook friends.

If you have been following Siri in the iPhone 4S closely, you might be interested in this. Siri sprang from a DARPA program that was looking into artificial intelligence. A new web discovery engine is set to debut that sprang form that same program that sired Siri. The web discovery engine is called Trapit. Trapit is an interesting concept that works by having the user type key words in rather than by voice like Siri.

The user can type in a couple keywords and Trapit will search around the web looking for images, video, recipes and other content on the topic entered. That sounds a lot like Google at first glance, but Trapit has another trick up its sleeves. Once you put in those keyboards and send Trapit out to find your information, you can save that inquiry.
