The team standing behind the ChevronWP7 jailbreak tool for WP7 announced that after a meeting with Microsoft they decided to discontinue the unlocking tool effective immediately.
In return Brandon Watson, the Windows Phone 7 Director of Developer Experience, agreed to "open the Windows Phone 7 platform for broader access to developers and users". In other words, its only a matter of time for home made apps to come to the Windows Phone 7.
Today and several weeks later than expected, Dell finally launched its first smartphone based on the Windows Phone 7 platform. The Dell Venue Pro is one of the few WP7 handsets equipped with a hardware QWERTY keyboard and what an unusual keyboard it is.
The Dell Venue Pro was first said to start selling on 8 November but, apparently, it took the company a bit longer to launch it. Anyway, what really counts is the phone is already available, at least in the US, and can be had for 450 USD without a contract or for 100 USD with a new 2-year contract with T-Mobile.
Apart from packing a full QWERTY the Venue Pro also sports a zippy 1GHz Snapdragon processor, multiple connectivity options, and a 5MP autofocus camera with HD video recording.
The word on the street, and by street we mean the net, is that Windows Phone 7 is set to get a gargantuan update in January,2011. So big is the update, it is said, that "... Microsoft might as well call the platform “Windows Phone 8" according to Chris Walsh, one of the devs behind the ChevronWP7 unlock tool.
The chatter says that leaked screenshots should be appearing soon, but for the moment the following features lead the pack as being expected in the update:
- Bing turn-by-turn directions
- Copy/paste (why is this always such a big deal with mobile OS?)
- Multi-tasking
- Ringtone customization
