benchmark

LG Optimus 2X, the first smartphone with the dual-core Tegra 2, was one of the spotlights at CES 2011. Here is the first public record of its performance under the Android Quadrant benchmark. We gotta say its pretty good even though its still a pre-production unit.

Mind you, the Quadrant software is not still up-to-date with the dual-core craze and recognized the processor only as single-core. Still, the LG Optimus 2X, which by the way, is running Froyo 2.2, smashed the available single-core competition, scoring the mind-blowing 2391 points. The LG Optimus 2X is currently available for preorder. We cannot wait to get our hands on it.

We just an on-site video from CE 2011, which showed the Motorola Droid Bionic do the same benchmark. It achieved pretty much the same score, so we guess thats the general performance you should expect from the Nvidia Tegra 2 platfrom on other devices as well.

Video Below!

For those of you eager to get hands on the new LG Optimus 2x featuring the Tegra 2 SoC, now is your chance to get one step closer to the superphone for just 499 pounds.

The UK retailer Expansys has put the Tegra 2-packing beast on their site ready to be preordered. Its going to cost you £499.99 (602 Euro) and is expected to come knocking on your door on February 21st.

The LG Optimus 2x super-phone features the hyped 1Ghz dual-core Tegra 250 system-on-a-chip and runs Android 2.2, upgradable to 2.3 Gingerbread.

It is not surprising that the first Tegra 2 powered product to be unveiled was LG Optimus 2x. At a relatively accessible price of 700USD it has clear advantages. I even do not mention HDMI 1080p support, which will be standard for many Tegra 2 solutions. New chip allows fast handling of graphic operations. For example, opening of pictures from an 8 MP camera or HD video takes no more than 2 seconds. Everything works fast and offers good quality. I am amazed by the speed of operation in Tegra 2.

LG developed a new screen technology named NOVA. There are still no substantial details available. We only know that it reduces the power consumption by 50-percent in comparison with SuperAMOLED screens, while brightness and other characteristics remain the same. I think we have AMOLED here similar to SuperAMOLED Plus from Samsung. It is wonderful that competition makes companies provide new products at such speed.

Another important issue is that the weight of devices has not increased much, while the batteries offer bigger capacity. A standard Android flagship now has 1800-2000 mAh instead of 1500 mAh before. Tegra 2 is not connected with that as it consumes less power. We have already discussed the question in Spillikins.

LG have just announced what they are claiming to be the worlds thinnest smartphone, the Optimus Black. Measuring a wafer thin 9.2mm thick it will ship with Froyo (Android 2.2), but LG are saying that it is Android 2.3 Gingerbread upgrade ready.

The handset features a 4 inch NOVA display, which the press release says will radically reduce power consumption by 50 percent during general indoor use.

The claim to be the world thinnest smartphone may not stand for long though with Sony Ericsson expected to unveil the Xperia arc, which is said to be just 8.7mm at its thinnest point.

T-Mobile US has teamed up with LG to introduce yet another 4G tablet. The device is called G-Slate and runs an "optimized" version of Android 3.0 Honeycomb.

Not much info is available yet, not even photos of the thing. Probably this will change, as today LG are going to be hosting another event at CES. Who knows, maybe they will share some details about the G-Slate. Meanwhile, enjoy the official video T-Mobile has uploaded on their YouTube channel showing some Honeycomb awesomeness.
