After a long and dramatic series of rumors, and only two days before Nokia online event, a promotional video of Nokia X7 for Three UK surfaced in YouTube, and brought a great deal of excitement to us.

The relatively short video clip should bring nothing but joy to Nokia Symbian fans. It shows the upcoming X7 with the latest version of Symbian UI and, honestly, the improvement from what we are used to seeing from Nokia up until now, is dramatic. The new Symbian UI looks sleeker and, more importantly, appears to be running much faster than its contemporary. The hotly anticipated web browser update has found its place on the Nokia X7 and is said to be three times faster than the current Nokia offering.

The changes which Nokia shows in its Symbian UI are definitely pointed at the right direction. We cannot help but wonder however, if they have not come a bit late, since it is a known fact that the OS in question is on its way out of the company future road map.

T7-00

Live photos of the unannounced Nokia T7-00 just surfaced in China. Apparently the Symbian^3 smartphone will be a slightly trimmed-down version of the Nokia N8 flagship, dropping the 12 megapixel shooter, but retaining the sleek aluminium unibody design.

At first glance the Nokia T7-00 looks identical to the N8 cameraphone champion, but upon closer inspection you see that the 12 megapixel camera is gone to be replaced by an 8 megapixel shooter. We are just hoping that Nokia did not go for fixed-focus here as they did in most of their recent smartphone.

The leak also brought confirmation of some of the smartphone specifications. We have got the usual nHD (360x640 pixels) display (supposedly AMOLED) as well as the usual well-geared connectivity set WLAN, GPS, Bluetooth, microUSB and 3G (TD-SCDMA on the pictured unit and UMTS with HSDPA on the global version). Unfortunately the HDMI port has also been removed.

Some guys over at Nokia Denmark have freed the Parrot AR.Drone from its iOS shackles and have written a control app for Symbian^3 devices (the Nokia N8, E7, C7, C6-01).

The app lets you fly the AR.Drone by using on screen controls and the phone accelerometer… The AR.Drone app for Symbian^3 supports all the drone features. You have an on-screen joystick to rotate the drone and you can control its movements by tilting the phone.

The app displays the video feed from the AR.Drone you can view the front or bottom camera or both in picture-in-picture mode. There is a take-off/landing button along with emergency and reset buttons in case something goes wrong.

Symbian^3

The Nokia vice president Purnima Kochikar has jus released an open letter to developers, revealing the company plans about their Symbian^3 platform. Apparently the Finns are planning to continue releasing new smartphones running on Symbian^3 as well as regular updates for the OS itself.

Those new devices should bring 1GHz+ CPUs and faster GPUs to Symbian^3. Kochikar also says that the company will make full use of its expertise in location-based services and imaging to make its new Symbian^3 smartphones more attractive.

Of course, its the UI thats currently holding the Symbian lineup back, but Nokia plans to do something about that too. There are several updates that should dramatically improve user experience in the pipeline. The first one is pretty major, delivering a brand new home screen, new flexible widgets, new icons, a faster browser, new Navbar and a fresh look and feel to Ovi Store and Ovi Maps, including integration of social media services in Ovi Maps.

Nokia Pure , the new typeface , which was launched recently during the design week has garnered a lot of attention. The Brandbook blog has given us a glimpse of the new type face in this screenshot comparing the old Nokia Sans font and the new Pure font. You might have seen a tutorial for changing the fonts (kind note : for symbian^3 devices only including E7) earlier, but there was a flaw , Qt apps broke. But now, after the release of beta Qt 4.7.2 those issues are gone and even Qt apps are sporting the new font. For example , the ovi store ,which used to break while it was in  Qt 4.7, proof here :

The above font , its the new Nokia Pure typeface.

Download Nokia Pure

A Quick tutorial !

Here is what you should do :

[For symbian^3 phones only, for other Symbian  devices (V5,V3) use FontRouter]

Get Qt 4.7.2 binaries : Core , Webkit Mobility

1. Make sure you have a memory card in your Symbian^3 device ,use mass memory for the E7 .

2. Then get any True type font you wish ( should be of extension .ttf ) . for example Nokia Pure.ttf

3. Now navigate to the Resource folder in memory card’s Root ( for example if M: is memory card , navigate to M:/Resource , if its not there, create one)

4.Now create a Folder called Fonts in M:/Resource ( So the folder path should beM:/Resource/Fonts )

5.Now this is the most important step :

Make four copies of the font you have and rename the same font to the corresponding filenames. ( for example: if you have helvetica(01).ttf rename it to nosnr60.ttf , like wise rename others to respective filenames given below )

nosnr60.ttf

nssb60.ttf

nstsb60.ttf

S60ZDIGI.ttf

6. After you have renamed to the above filenames, Copy them to the Fonts folder In M:/Resource/Fonts.

Now reboot the phone and enjoy your new fonts !
