Nokia HQ

Sadly, Nokia financial status is not so good these days, As a result the company is selling its headquarters building in Espoo, Finland for approximately €170 million. The building offers 48,000 square meters of office real estate and has been housing Nokia's HQ since 1997. Nokia will finalize the deal by the end of this year.

Chief financial officer of Nokia, Timo Ihamuotia had to say:

We had a comprehensive sales process with both Finnish and foreign investors and we are very pleased with this outcome. As we have said before, owning real estate is not part of Nokia's core business and when good opportunities arise we are willing to exit these types of non-core assets. We are naturally continuing to operate in our head office building on a long-term basis. - Nokia CFO

Nokia Android

Nokia's Media Relations fellow, Doug Dawson, puts an end of the rumors that Nokia is not looking into building a hardware for the Android OS. Rumors started online as Nokia was looking for Software engineer to Embedded Linux Middleware on LinkedIn.

On the other hand, we did point out that the listing could be for software engineers to help build a version of Nokia's HERE mapping app to Android. And as it turns out, that is exactly what Mr. Dawson revealed in a tweet that he send out on Sunday. Dawson said that the job listing is related to HERE Maps support for both Android and iOS and other platforms.

HTC 8X vs. Lumia 820

Latest Rumors claim that Nokia considers seeking ban for the upcoming HTC flagship Windows Phone 8X. The Finns Company accuse HTC of copying the Lumia 820 front panel design for its Windows Phone 8X. As you can see above both devices looks very much the same.

Nokia unveiled the Lumia 820 and 920 in the beginning of September. HTC announced its two WP-powered headsets two weeks later. Shortly after Nokia's EVP of Sales and Marketing tweeted "It takes more than matching color to match the innovation of the Lumia 920." aimed directly at HTC's new phones.

Today, Nokia announced that they have completed the acquisition of technologies, developers and intellectual property from imaging software specialists Scalado. The Finns first hinted at this deal last month, and they are now ready to finalize it.

As you may know, due to some reasons that the two companies have chosen not to disclose, Nokia is not actually buying the Scalado company, but only its personnel and technology. From a users' perspective there's little difference though, as the cool software features developed by the Swedish-based company will soon be making their way to Nokia smartphones.

Stephen Elop

We all know Nokia's CEO, Stephen Elop. He lives in Helsinki, after he announced that he was going to let go 10,000 employees he opted to go home with some security guards according to the Finnish publication Iltalehti. When you look at Finland alone, roughly 3,700 Nokia employees will lose their job. You have to remember, this is a country with approximately 5.3 million people.

Nokia is also intrinsic to Finland's identity, so you can see why their current situation might cause a lot of locals to be upset. Still, would they be crazy enough to attack Elop as he was coming home from work? Highly unlikely.

Nokia released a few teaser images on its US Facebook page that contain the date, Monday, June 18th. This is the same day Microsoft is holding a tablet event and people started speculating that Nokia's announcement is related to the Microsoft event. The two announcements are not related. Sources told the blog that Nokia will likely announce the US launch of the 41-megapixel 808 PureView.

The 808 PureView is a Symbian-powered handset with a 41-megapixel camera. It's mid-range phone with a 4-inch OLED display, a 1.3GHz processor and 512MB of RAM.

Nokia Teaser

Nokia USA has posted a series of teaser images on Facebook with June 18, 2012 on them, which naturally caused quite a stir. Initially, it was thought that Nokia's news will be somewhat related to Microsoft's announcement, which is bound to take place on the same date. A careful examination of the photos however points at an announcement of Nokia 808 Pureview availability in the United States.

Nokia fans still waiting for an official announcement from Nokia main Department in Finland, but if this really true, this will mean that Symbian is fading away quicker than expected. We don't know whether there's a direct connection between Symbian sales and the update plans, but in either case, news is that the last update to the burning platform will be Nokia Belle Feature Pack 2.

Nokia 808 PureView

The 41-megapixel Nokia 808 PureView is a device for the people who interested in mobile photography. When the phone was launched, Nokia disappointed us by officially stating in the product page that the phone won't arrive to the US. BUT Now The 808 PureView will come to the United States, but it won't be subsidized by carriers as it will be shipped unlocked.

"We'll figure out a way to make that available in the U.S. in the next couple of months," said Nokia US President Chris Weber.

Even without Nokia's help, the unlocked 808 PureViews would have arrived on interested retailers.

A New Patents war begins, After Samsung & Apple here comes Nokia. Nokia has decided to sue HTC, RIM and ViewSonic for patent infringement in the US and Germany.

Nokia has waged legal war on the three companies with 11 separate lawsuits concerning 45 patents in virtually all spheres you can think of starting with antennas and power management, and going into software and application stores.

HTC

Nokia Offiical Statement on this Matter:

"Nokia proprietary innovations protected by these patents are being used by the companies to enable hardware capabilities such as dual function antennas, power management and multimode radios, as well as to enhance software features including application stores, multitasking, navigation, conversational message display, dynamic menus, data encryption and retrieval of email attachments on a mobile device,"

Nokia

Nokia just announced their financial results for Q1 of 2012 and things are not looking that good, but CEO Stephen Elop is keeping his chin up. Nokia smartphone division was hit the hardest, but the good news for them is that this is due to the decline in sales of Symbian phones, with the Lumia range starting to make up for it.

Table

Nokia combined net sales were down 29% year-over-year (YoY) to €7.354 billion and the company posted an operating loss of €1.34 billion.

CEO Stephen Elop remains confident in Nokia's strategy, saying that they covered the top and bottom range of the Windows Phone market with the launches of the Lumia 900 and Lumia 610 (which just started rolling out in Asia) and that they will strengthen their S40 portfolio in the next quarter. Nokia is also working on cost-cutting measures.

Nokia PureView

As MWC hype is picking up momentum, Nokia decided to join the fun and released a short video trailer of its upcoming PureView smartphone to be release on 27,Feb at  the MWC.

The Nokia PureView is the rumored successor to the Nokia N8 camera-centered smartphone. Earlier online gossip had it its official name will be Nokia N808 PureView and it will be wielding the most capable camera mounted on a smartphone to date.

The Nokia video teaser does not really do much to confirm or refute those rumors, but we are hoping they come out right. The camera division of the company did an excellent job of the N8, but the handset was let down by its unimpressive chipset and less than stellar OS and UI.

Nokia Maps 3D

Nokia unveiled its Nokia Maps 3D back in April of this year and they were certainly cool. Nokia has announced some really cool new features. One of the new features is the ability for the user to search for local attractions, restaurants, and shops. That means you can see the shop you want to visit and then get directions how to get there.

The directions are given on maps with photorealistic views of the locations you are looking for. You do have to install a plug-in to get the 3D maps. After installing that plug-in, you can enter addresses in the search field as well as business names and points of interest you want to see. It will then find the thing you are looking for and put it on the screen for you to check out.

At the Developer Day in Mexico, Nokia shed some light on the next two Symbian versions Carla and Donna plus further information on the Symbian Belle update rollout.

Symbian Carla is intended for smartphones with a 1GHz processor or higher and will be released in late 2012 or early 2013. It is going to offer a new web browser, new widgets, lots of new NFC capabilities and Dolby Surround audio enhancement.

The processor minimum requirement means all the Symbian^3 and Symbian Anna handsets (N8, C6-01, C7, E7, E6, X7-00) are not going to get this version
Symbian Donna will be exclusive to dual-core processors, but at the current release intervals, most probably we won't see it before the end of 2013 or the early 2014.

Nokia Research loves its concept phones the flexible Kinetic concept was one of our favorite things at Nokia World last month and for the team 25th anniversary they have produced this, the Nokia GEM. Built around the idea of the entire phone surface being a touch-sensitive display front, sides and back GEM learns from your most common tasks and adapts its default appearance to suit, so if you play games most of the time the phone will usually look like a gamepad.

However, there is also the possibility of resizable QWERTY and numeric keypads, which can be pushed along with the ongoing IM conversation around to the back of the phone while you look up details on the front. The flared upper edges work as an app carousel, shuffled around with a thumb and then dragged to the main display to launch them, and everything is resizable.

Because so much of the body is given over to screen, when you run an app say, triggering the camera with a circle gesture shortcut the whole phone can adapt its appearance to suit. Alternatively, as in Nokia non-functional mockup shown in these photos, you could have browser favorites circling the edges and media playback controls on the top.

Nokia Bendable phone

Flexible displays and devices seem to be the holy grail of mobile technology, as you can have the power and connections we all expect but have the ability to warp the shape into anything thats most convenient. While we have seen flexible displays before, the prototypes Nokia was showing at its Nokia World 2011 conference were pretty freaking mind blowing.

The company was showing off multiple Nokia Kinetic devices, working portable electronics that can be bent and twisted but still work. One device looked like a large touchscreen slate phone but you could bend it to scroll through music and photos. This is definitely a prototype device but one could easily see phone capabilities being thrown into there one day.

The other Nokia Kinetic device could take pictures and display them in its elongated teardrop shape. The plastic sturdiness of its casing meant that you could drop it on the ground or bend it and it would still work. A representative even said you could wash it under the tap and it would not hinder the device usability.

Some argued that the working conditions Foxconn put their employees through caused them to take their lives, meaning Foxconn is to blame for the deaths, not Apple. Thats debatable, especially since Apple is known to inspect each and every part of their supply chain, from component sourcing to product manufacturing to the retail stores that sell their hardware. Now Nokia is different. They own their own factories and hire their own people, opting to have their goods made as close to, or even in, the countries where they will eventually be sold. This makes logistics far simpler.

No suicides have taken place in Nokia factories, as far as we know, but the Finnish handset maker is being accused of paying wages that are far below what's required to live in India. The human rights group Finnwatch says Nokia employs 11,364 at a factory in Chennai, India that produces more than 300,000 devices per day. The average salary for a permanent employee, meaning not part time or a contracter, is around $125 per month. According to the Asia Floor Wage Campaign, you need $170 a month to live a decent life in India.

gsmarena 001 Symbian Belle firmware for Nokia N8 leaks, you can flash it if you dare

Symbian Belle will debut with the Nokia 600, 700 and 701 trio, but the older Symbians should be getting it soon after that. Yet if you are knowledgeable and brave enough to flash your smartphone with a custom ROM, Belle has been available for a few weeks now. And now there is a newer ROM for the Nokia N8 available that should be much closer to the final deal.

Still, as with all software that is not fully finalized, there is a risk of trouble, but Nokia Head of Social Media, Mark Squires, has already installed Belle on his N8.

The new firmware is N8-only and supports only English and Russian languages. You can grab the files from Symbian Coders, where you will find flashing instructions, too. Again, this is a proceed at your own risk deal.
