Samsung might get lazy with the Galaxy Z Fold 5's cameras

13 March, 2023 Samsung

When the Samsung Galaxy S23 series was launched, Samsung gave the phone's cameras a massive upgrade by sticking a 200MP ISOCELL HP2 sensor in the phone. Whether or not we actually need a 200MP is a debate for another time, but in terms of pure tech advancements, it's impressive.

Unfortunately, it looks like Samsung might not be bothering to do the same with its upcoming foldable, the Galaxy Z Fold 5. This is according to a report from Ice Universe who claims that the Fold 5 is expected to use the same module as the Fold 4, which means that it will still feature the same 50MP primary camera alongside a 12MP ultrawide, and a 10MP telephoto.

It was previously rumored that the Fold 5 could adopt the 200MP sensor in the Galaxy S23 Ultra, but according to Ice Universe, that's a no go as apparently it will be "impossible" to use the HP2 in the Fold 5. Seeing as how it was possible it was used in the Galaxy S23 Ultra, we can only assume that by "impossible", it means that due to the design of the Fold 5, Samsung will not be able to fit the HP2 sensor in the phone.

Is this a bummer? Yes and no. Assuming the tweet is accurate, seeing no camera upgrade certainly makes the phone seem kind of boring, but on the other hand, the Galaxy Z Fold 4's camera is already pretty good, plus the selling point of the phone is its foldable display that turns it from phone to tablet, so customers who buy it might not necessarily want or need the best possible camera out there.

Either way it's still a good idea to take this with a grain of salt, but hopefully we'll have more details in the coming months to share with you all.
