Intel - MWC11

Intel first attempt at a SoC for smartphones, Moorestown, did not go so well. Now they are showing it successor, called Medfield, brings major improvements to the platform as a whole. Intel even showed an Android prototype phone, powered by Moorestown.

The Medfield SoC will use a new manufacturing process 32nm. In Medfield the CPU and chipset will be integrated into a single chip, while Moorestown used two separate chips CPU (45nm) and chipset (65nm).

All these changes reduce the size of the SoC and more importantly, improves performance and power usage. Intel claims that Medfield is the most efficient architecture in the world and that it offers the longest usage time. Standby is also competitive, says Intel. Medfield is sampling to Intel partners and should be ready to ship to manufacturers by the end of this year.

Intel confirmed that a Medfield-powered phone will ship, there was even a phone shown off on stage yes a real phone with an Atom core inside. Unfortunately they did not say what it was, probably the N9!

MeeGo

It has not been a terribly good week for MeeGo, but there is a scant silver lining in the cloud the first MeeGo netbook has arrived in Singapore, courtesy of Fujitsu. Actually, to be precise, its the first netbook to ship with MeeGo preinstalled, as Fujitsu simply shoehorned the lightweight operating system onto its existing LifeBook MH330 machine. Sadly, the MH330 about as boring as they come its a plain vanilla 1.66GHz Intel Atom N455 ultraportable with 1GB of RAM, a 250GB hard drive and a 10.1-inch 1024 x 600 LED-backlit screen.

The company says its customized MeeGo to take advantage of hardware buttons, but other than that there\'s nothing noteworthy here, just a (roughly $400) netbook that managed to find a place in the annals of history for being the first to preinstall an operating system thats already on the outs albeit a very pleasant, quickly-booting one. PR after the break.

Intel - MWC11

Intel may have been the jilted bride left at the altar by Nokia, but its not giving up on MeeGo just yet. The above poster has been hung up here in Barcelona, in the area us humble journalists still are not in allowed yet, and shows a smartphone and tablet running Intel Linux variant as their OS.

There are plenty of details to pore over, such as the multiplicity of home screen items on the tablet that includesBig Buck Bunny a favorite for testing HD video playback in its top right corner. the handset, meanwhile, could very well be that Aava Mobile device we have been hearing about lately. MWC is opening its doors tomorrow, so even if Intel does not announce these devices in full, we will snoop its booth out and find out for ourselves.

meego logo1 Intel to pursue MeeGo with or without Nokia

Intel said in a statement on Friday that it will continue development of the MeeGo operating system. MeeGo is a joint venture between Nokia and Intel that merges the Maemo operating system, used by Nokia on its N-series tablets, and Intel Mobilin project. The mobile operating system was designed to power smartphones, tablets and embedded systems such as those found in networked television sets and car entertainment systems.

Following Nokia announcement that it was adopting Windows Phone as its primary operating system for its smartphones, the Finnish manufacturer hinted that MeeGo will become a research platform used to explore the "next-generation devices, platforms and user experiences." One MeeGo device will be launched in 2011, but additional devices are not on Nokia roadmap. During a Q&A session following Nokia and Microsoft big announcement, Stephen Elop called MeeGo "an opportunity for learning" , which implies Intel is on its own if it wants to make MeeGo a commercially-viable platform.

About the Nokia N9 Design according to some leaked photos from the Nokia Official Blog, the Nokia N9 Design was a Community project who gathered many Developers and Innovators to make the main design from of the phone (I was one of them) just telling our ideas and concepts of an innovative device that we want and Nokia Also used the same concept to release a similar Eseries phone which was the Nokia E7 but with Symbian^3 OS instead of MeeGo on the Nokia World 2010, But Nokia product manager said then that the MeeGo tablet was delayed to 2011 and it will be "The Big Event for Nokia in 2011"

As it has been almost a year now since Nokia and Intel decided to combine their Linux-based work and announced Maemo and then MeeGo OS and decided to go for MeeGo as the Main development, the Nokia N9 will Run the MeeGo v1.2.0.0 that support the 3G HSPA+ and the other featured specs of the N9 which makes the Nokia N9 that First Device to be Officially Released by Nokia & Intel in with a MeeGo OS as its Core Operating System (Not like the N900, as it has Maemo OS) and that Explains the Intel Chip on the N9 Specs.

Last week the main Man at Intel, Anand Chandrasekher, (Nokia partner on MeeGo) was photographed holding up an unidentified smartphone. which looks very similar to this stylish design which was rumored to be the Next smartphone that will run MeeGo OS with intel Technology (processor) as he said.
