Forget 4K display when you can have 5K display with Sony Xperia 1R

That's 2160 x 5050 pixels. Sounds a lot. Isn't? Sony may not sound like a big name when it comes to the smartphone industry in 2019. It used to have a huge reputation for its display and camera technology but then it kind of got lost in the sea of all the smartphone manufacturers. Especially, in India, where all smartphone companies are facing a new mid-range device war you won't hear much about the Sony devices. However, Sony still holds a visible share in the industry, and the most recent launch from the company is the Sony Xperia 1, which support a 4K-resolution 21:9 aspect ratio and OLED display panel. A few new reports suggest that Sony is looking to move one step ahead with the Xperia 1R which could have a 5K-resolution screen.

A Japanese site Sumahoinfo discovered a leaked user-agent profile for the upcoming devices, which shows the resolution of the smartphone to be 5040 x 2160 pixels, making it the first 5k-resolution screen on the device. This is now believed to be called the Sony Xperia 1R, and not Xperia 2. Sony may launch this phone at IFA 2019. So far, the screen size isn't known by as pointed by GSMArena, it could be a 6.5-inch screen at the very least given that the Xperia 1 has a 6.5-inch 4k screen. This would put the pixel density at 899ppi. The aspect ratio is expected to be 21:9 just like Xperia 1.

At this point, some of you may wonder why we need such a high resolution at a cell phone. In normal cases, we don't but if you are using VR-based applications or want to watch a movie with lots of detailed sci-fiction effects, it might be worthwhile. While Sony is certainly pushing the boundaries of screen resolution on its smartphones, the company has long since lost its standing in the smartphone space, and recently withdrew from India and other markets in a bid to turn the business profitable.
