Samsung is particularly known for packing its devices with the highest specifications possible, and the company has pioneered numerous innovations in recent years. The most notable of these is the curved screen technology that is now almost indelibly associated with Samsung, and it is expected that this will become even more significant when the Galaxy S7 is released.

Samsung is now rumoured to be in talks with Sony to include the IMX300 Xperia Z5 camera sensor within the Galaxy S7, which are DSLR quality sensors, similar to what the Nexus 5X and 6P both have, and that it would be a 12-megapixel shooter.  It will also have support for RAW images, and feature a new video recorder mode. Likely to compete with the RAW features of video recording that LG added on the V10.

Aside from this, Samsung is also likely to upgrade the display technology included in the Galaxy S7. With Sony having released the world's first 4K smartphone in the shape of the Z5 Premium, Samsung is expected by many analysts to follow suit. It is also suggested according to recent rumors that the Galaxy S7 will follow the example of Apple and include a technology similar to Force Touch. This could utilize a system known as ClearForce, which is able to differentiate between a tap and a press to trigger different actions.

The expert believes that the next-gen handset will cost 10 percent lower than the Galaxy S6. This should easily give surety to bigger sales as the tech firm is basically offering up a more formidable device with a price much more manageable than what the competition puts up.

All 2014 Flag-ship devices will have a Snapdragon 801 on-board powering it, but What is Snapdragon 801 ? Samsung Galaxy S5 have it, HTC One 2014 have it, Sony Xperia Z2 also have it... Are they all the same ? what's the difference ? Here is the Answers.

The Qualcomm MSM8974 is one of the original Snapdragon 800 SoC (system-on-chip). It has four Krait 400 cores that can be clocked up to 2.3 GHz, Adreno 330 GPU with a clock of 450MHz and LPDDR3-1600 memory controller. This is the hardware you'll find inside the LG G2, Sony Xperia Z Ultra, Samsung Galaxy Note 3, Sony Xperia Z1, Nexus 5, and Nokia Lumia 1520 among other popular S800-powered smartphones. So far, so good.

The Qualcomm MSM8974AB s a second generation Snapdragon 801 SoC. It supports four Krait 400 cores up to 2.3 GHz (same as before), Adreno 330 GPU up to 550 MHz (that's 100 MHz higher than the original MSM8974 specs), and a faster LPDDR3-1866 memory controller. So, this newer AB revision of the SoC offers faster GPU and memory speeds and bandwidth. MSM8974AB is powering the Sony Xperia Z2, Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet and is rumored to tick inside the HTC One 2014 (TBA in March).

Finally, comes the Qualcomm MSM8974AC SoC, the third generation S801 SoC. It allows for even higher CPU clock - the four Krait 400 cores are now able to operate up to 2.5 GHz, the Adreno 330 GPU gets an even higher clock - 578 MHz, while the memory controller is the same at LPDDR3-1866. It is the fastest commercially available Snapdragon chipset on the market and can be found inside the recently announced Samsung Galaxy S5.

Sony released the Xperia Z5 series loaded with top notch features in selected regions across the globe. This variant was not available in the US till now. However, the "Sony Xperia Z5 Premium's" unlocked, international variant can now be purchased via Amazon and Expansys.

You should note that the Xperia Z5 Premium available via Amazon and Expansys won't come with U.S. warranty. The retailers have listed both single SIM and dual SIM options of the Z5 handset and both of the variants will support LTE connectivity. But, the handset will work only under AT&T, T-Mobile and other GSM network carriers, as CDMA support is not available.

Coming to price, Amazon's Xperia Z5 Premium will cost $733, whereas from Expansys the same can bought for $779.99. The USP of this smartphone is the 4K display resolution of 2160 x 3840 pixels. This device is reportedly the "world's first smartphone" with 4K display.

Specifications wise, the Sony Xperia Z5 Premium will boast a 5.5-inch IPS LCD display. The screen size along with 4K resolution translates to a magnificent 806 ppi pixel density resulting in outstanding viewing experience. The device is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor backed by 3GB RAM. Although currently the OS is Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, it can be upgraded to Marshmallow.

Via Amazon and Expansys-USA

As per @Ricciolo1, a well-known leakster, Sony is aiming to upgrade its Xperia Z5 series to Android 6.90 Marshmallow in January and for older models the same update is planned shortly after the Z5.

Marshmallow comes with a bunch of improvements, optimizations and features that'd be very useful to any smartphone. Battery life improvements and performance boosts are the most noticeable changes to the software. But this is a rumour; nothing is fixed and there is no solid timeline. So take this with a pinch of salt.

Sony has been really good with getting the older devices updated. The Xperia Z (not the Z1) was upgraded all the way to Lollipop 5.1.1, although it had an older Snapdragon S4 Pro processor. Just like many flagships devices that were launched last year (apart from the One A9), the Sony Xperia Z5 is one of the many still operating on Lollipop.

It would be quite interesting to see what Sony has planned for their version of Marshmallow. We know that Sony has been working on a near-stock Android build for sometime and by using the Marshmallow's Doze feature in conjunction with their own proprietary battery saving software, the battery life in many devices can be enhanced.

Courtesy of GSM Arena, we are now able to take a look at the Sony Xperia F8331 prior to its launch. In case you are not aware, the F8331 is the upcoming flagship smartphone from Sony and it is supposed to be released in 2016. From what we can see, the device looks quite different in comparison to its predecessors and will probably sport a larger display as well. At the back, the position of the camera and the dual-tone flash have been tweaked slightly to give it a new look. A separate panel at the back and near the bottom can also be seen, which looks similar to an antenna window.

There's also the USB Type-C port, the 3.5mm audio jack, a NFC antenna and the much loved front facing stereo speakers. We found the device to be gorgeous and the specs look promising so far. There might be a few complains about Sony going with a Full HD display for the F8331 instead of a QHD or even 4K display, but considering how much of a battery hog those can be, we are not complaining. You can still shoot 4K videos with both the front and the rear cameras though.

The Sony Xperia XA has just been made official by the Japanese OEM and from what we know so far, it's going to be a mid-range device. The phone looks beautiful thanks to the metal build and color options (Black, White and Lime Gold), but it isn't a slouch under the hood either. The Mediatek Helio P10 SoC will power the device, supported by 3GB of RAM and managed by Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. The in-built memory is nothing to write home about as it's limited to 16GB, but fortunately, there is a micro-SD card slot on the XA Ultra.

What we found a bit strange is Sony's use of only a 2,700mAh battery to power the giant 6-inch Full HD bezel less display sported by the Ultra. Considering the screen size and the demanding SoC, the battery seems insufficient. However, Sony doesn't agree and has even gone on to declare that the Ultra will last for two consecutive days after a full charge. It does support quick charging and according to Sony, charging the smartphone for only ten minutes will be sufficient to use it for the next five and a half hours.

The highlight of the device is its front camera, which is rumored to be the best in class sensor from Sony. The 16-megapixel "selfie" cam has optical image stabilization, gesture shutter and even a flash for snapping selfies in dark surroundings. Not to be outdone, the rear camera with hybrid autofocus comprises of a beastly 21.5-megapixel sensor. If you are excited about the Xperia XA Ultra, it is due to be launched in July, but no details about the price of the device have been made public yet. Stay tuned to know more.

This year in February, Sony decided to introduce the Xperia X, Xperia X Performance, and Xperia XA. At the same time they also phased out the Z series. Now, we are expecting another member to join the brand new series. This is about Xperia X Premium, which will be the next device to take the place of Z5 Premium. This smartphone was the very first device with capability to display media in 4K format. Apparently the display screen will be the point of differentiation for Xperia X Premium as well.

It will sport an HDR display, which will be a first for smartphones (but it is gradually becoming a norm in TVs). That would mean that the device will be able to display 1.07 billion colors, in comparison to the 16.8 million color depth of various other smartphones.

The Xperia X Premium will also come with 120Hz refresh rate, 2,000:1 contrast ratio, and the display panel will be the brightest among all the available smarphones. It will package 1,000 nits of "white brightness" and could extend upto 1,300 nits, which more than two times of what Samsung Galaxy S7 can achieve (539 nits).

The next smartphone would be powered by the Snapdragon 820 SoC from Qualcomm, backed by 3GB of RAM. A USB Type-C connector will also be there. But, there are very few news about the actual launch date of this device.

The Sony Xperia Z has been confirmed for the US market but unfortunately, it won't sport the fingerprint scanner on the side like its international counterpart. We are not exactly sure why Sony decided to leave out the fingerprint scanner for the US version, but we are guessing it must be a patent issue. Whatever the reason may be, it is kind of hard to recommend a flagship smartphone with a premium price tag that doesn't even sport a feature which has become so rudimentary now that even $100 phones sport them.

The Xperia XZ will hit the US on October 2, with a 700 dollar (USD 699.99) price tag. The handset will be powered by a Snapdragon 820 processor, 3GB of RAM, IP68 certified water and dust resistance, a 2,900mAh battery and an attractive design which will come in Mineral Black, Forest Blue, Deep Pink and Platinum color options. There's also a whopping 23-megapixel rear mounted snapper, a 13-megapixel selfie cam and a 1080p 5.2-inch IPS LCD display. Considering that there are cheaper and may be even better options out there, will the Sony brand name be enough to lure you away from them?

Sony is updating the Xperia M5 and M5 Dual this month with a security patch and an upgrade to Android 5.1 Lollipop. E5603, E5606 and E5653 are the three versions of the M5 that are going to receive the updates. Similarly, E5633 and E5663 are the two versions of the M5 Dual that qualifies for the OTA update package. It should be noted though, that there is confusion in regard to whether or not the Xperia M5 Dual E5643 is excluded by Sony. All information was provided by XperiaBlog and reports suggest that the news is authentic.

If you have the M5 Dual, expect to see the build number to be changed to 30.1.B.1.33 after the update and if you have the single-SIM M5, it will show 30.1.A.1.33 post installation. According to Sony, the new updates will solve a number of issues on the two smartphones and will improve other aspects. Better control of volume and silent-mode with overall improvements is one of the elements that were highlighted by Sony, along with the newly added ability to control the M5's camera with the Sony SmartWatch 3.

If you are new to installing OTA updates, follow these steps.

  • 1. Go to Settings and navigate to About Phone.
  • 2. Find System Updates and select Check for Update from there.
  • 3. After the system finds the update, Download it.
  • 4. Once the download finishes, Restart and Install.
  • 5. The device will now reboot into ROM installation mode and you should see the prompt Installing System Update.
  • 6. Just wait and the rest will finish automatically. Your smartphone should sport Android 5.1 Lollipop now.

Xperia Z3

The anticipated Sony Xperia Z3 is Now official, just 6 months after its latest Xperia Z2 flagship. Also Sony revealed is the sequel to the very capable Xperia Z1 Compact, the Xperia Z3 Compact.

Xperia Z3

The Sony Xperia Z3 runs on a quad-core 2.5GHz MSM8974AC Snapdragon 801 chip, alongside 3GB of RAM and Adreno 330 graphics. There's no 2K screen to be found, as all the new members of the Xperia family feature 1080p displays. The Z3 comes in at 5.2 inches, just like its predecessor.

Z3

Sony was able to trim off about 1mm from all of its dimensions as well as 11g off its weight, making it lighter and thinner than the Xperia Z2. The Omnibalance design has been furthered by the inclusion of a high quality metal frame to complement the glass front and rear panels.

Sony Xperia Z3 Specs

The US variants of the Xperia Z5 and Z5 Compact will be made available in the next month and they won't feature a fingerprint sensor. The suitable placement of the sensor in an elongated power button on the side of the phone was one of the major factors contributing to its popularity. But, it won't be made available in the US versions of these devices.

As per Sony it was a business decision to discard the sensor and to us it surely seems like a completely unexpected move. Certainly it won't contribute to the success of these devices in North america. We hope Sony has a rock solid reason behind this.

Sony's primary concern right now is to get things moving in the US, considering the plethora of problems the Xperia Z4v had during its US launch and problems that made Verizon ditch the device completely. Sony had to release the same device after few months under the Xperia Z3+ brand on Amazon and B&H. But it seems like Sony is on the verge of another botched up product launch.

There is a major unanswered question: why would Sony get rid of one of most popular feature from a flagship device? We'd have wait and watch to check out how the story will unfold and how would Sony tackle the any kind of adverse situation.

Sony Xperia Z2 Full Specifications

There's no official word from Sony as to why the price has gone up. However, we suspect recent reports of supply shortages and stock limitations for the company's latest flagship to be the culprit here. Xperia Z2 price in the UK is £564 SIM-free in major retailers.

Today, a DigiTimes report revealed that Sony will adopt liquid heat-pipe cooling technology for its new products, starting with the Xperia Z2, which seems to be the reason behind why the Z2 is delayed to June,2014 for the launch. Samsung and Lenovo were also looking up the technology together with Taiwan-based thermal module makers. While specialized heat pipes for smartphones are already available for mass production, the two technological giants decided against adopting them for the time being.

Compared to PC and laptop heat-pipes, which range from 0.003 inches (0.8mm) to 0.08 inches (2mm) in diameter, smartphone pipes measure only 0.02 inches (0.6mm). They are said to have better heat-dissipation effects than graphite carbon fiber sheets. Although cooling technology doesn't seem to be an obstacle for device performance right now, heat pipes could become common in next year's flagship models. It goes without saying that, as chipsets and basebands grow increasingly powerful, they will be emitting larger amounts of heat.

Heat-pipe cooling Z2

Heat-Pipe Cooling Technology

Heat pipes are hollow metal pipes filled with a liquid coolant that moves heat by evaporating and condensing in an endless cycle. As the lower end of the Heatpipe is exposed to heat, the coolant within it starts to evaporate, absorbing heat. As the coolant turns into vapor, it, and its heatload, convect within the heatpipe.

The reduced molecular density forces the vaporized coolant upwards, where it is exposed to the cold end of the Heat pipe. The coolant then condenses back into a liquid state, releasing the latent heat. Since the rate of condensation increases with increased delta temperatures between the vapor and Heat pipe surface, the gaseous coolant automatically streams towards the coldest spot within the Heat pipe.

As the coolant condenses, and its molecular density increases once more, gravitational forces pull the coolant towards the lower end of the Heat pipe. To aid this coolant cycle, improve its performance, and make it less dependant on the orientation of the Heat pipe towards earth gravitational center, modern Heatpipes feature inner walls with a fine, capillary structure. The capillary surfaces within the Heatpipe break the coolants surface tension, distributing it evenly throughout the structure.

As soon as coolant evaporates on one end, the coolants surface tension automatically pulls in fresh coolant from the surrounding area. As a result of the self organizing streams of the coolant in both phases, heat is actively convecting through Heat pipes throughout the entire coolant cycle, at a rate unmatched by solid Heat spreaders and Heat sinks.

Sony seems to be following Samsung on revealing a New Flag-ship phone and in the day too. Samsung already announced that it be releasing the Galaxy Note 4 on Sept,3 IFA event. Today, Sony is also announcing a Exclusive Unveiling Event for a new flagship device, which is the Xperia Z3 of course, Sony picked the same date as Samsung which is September,3rd.

Sony's invitation simply says "You are invited to the IFA 2014 Sony press conference and exclusive booth unveiling", and, how thoughtful of Sony, the event is set to start at 4:15pm local time. The invitation further hints at the products to be announced at the event with a collage of product pictures.

Sony Mobile released 6 Apps that showcase the water resistance of its flagship Xperia smartphones. Sony Underwater Apps is currently Available in the United States for Xperia Z1s and Xperia Z2 via Google Play Store Here.

The apps, which look undeniably fun and goofy, utilize a great deal of clever engineering to work. The end result is an Xperia device that detects and changes behavior when submerged under water.

The abovementioned feat is achieved via a detector, which generates a test tone with frequency beyond that of the human ear. The device uses its dual-microphones to record sounds that are subsequently processed. The resulting spectrograms contain data that helps the device detect if it is in the air or under water.

Sony has been gathering a lot of attention in the past few days with a lot of rumors and speculations about its CES 2015 announcements. It appears that the tech giant has opted to put off major announcements in the mobile division and save the heat for MVC in a few months. This of course means that there is no word yet on a future Xperia Z4 device lineup, which has been a persistent rumor for quite some time now.

Sony users do, however have a lot to be happy about after the presentation and especially owners of devices from the Xperia Z family. The Japanese company has not forgotten its promise to bring Android 5.0 Lollipop to its entire Xperia Z3 lineup and according to Michael Fasulo, the company's CEO, first builds for Xperia Z3 devices can be expected as early as next month.

Purple had become a sort-of trademark color for Sony's premium Xperia Z line, until the Xperia Z3 came along and broke the streak. The fourth-gen Z flagship added Copper and Green to the traditional Black and White color options, but Purple may soon make a comeback.

And not a moment too soon either, the Xperia Z4 family is expected at the MWC 2015 in early March so the window for Z3 launches is closing. ePrice has gotten hold of unreleased product images. It looks like there will be two versions one dark purple and one that's a more traditional Xperia purple.

Reports online suggests that Sony's upcoming flagship smartphone, Sony Xperia Z4 might have been certified by the FCC in the US. It turns out that a unknown Sony smartphone has just visited the agency wearing very little identification. FCC papers show that the device supports LTE bands 2, 5 and 7, which gives away nothing special about the handset.

The latest rumored specs for the Sony Xperia Z4 include two different variations of the phone. A model carrying a 5.2-inch screen with resolution of 1440 x 2560 features a pixel density of 565ppi. Another model with a 5.2-inch 1080 x 1920 resolution screen offers a pixel density of 424ppi. Both models are equipped with a 64-bit octa-core 2GHz Snapdragon 810 processor.

In the states, the device will come with 4GB of RAM; in Europe and Asia, the phone will feature 3GB of the stuff. A 20.7MP snapper adorns the back of the handset, while a 5MP "selfie" camera will be found in the front. The 3400mAh battery will keep the lights on, and Android 5.0 will be pre-installed. IP68 certification means that the phone can survive contact with dust and water. The device will be offered in white, black, blue and silver.

Sony has just announced a New High-end tablet at the MWC 2015, Sony Xperia Z4 Tablet comes with a 10.1" IPS display of 2560 x 1600 pixels resolution, which results into a nice pixel density of 300ppi. The display is enhanced by Sony's Triluminos technology and X-Reality Mobile engine.

The rest of the Xperia Z4 Tablet specs include 32GB expandable memory, a rear 8MP Sony ExmorRS camera and 5MP wide-angle front selfie snapper, stereo speakers and GSM, 3G and 4G LTE connectivity. The slate is powered by a 6,000 mAh battery and Sony says it will last 17 hours on video playback.

Sony Xperia Z4 Tablet is IP68-certified, which translates in to a dust-tight shell and waterproof design with endurance for up to 30 minutes into 1.5m deep fresh water.

z lollipop

Sony Mobile made an announcement today regarding the official Android 5.0 Lollipop updates for its Xperia devices, sadly this announcement brings some BAD NEWS to few Sony users, as the company will focus only on its main flagship "Xperia Z" series.

Sony surprised everyone by stating via its official Twitter account that the Lollipop update will be released only for the the "Xperia Z" series devices. That means, the Xperia E1, E2, C3, M2, M2 Aqua, T3, and T2 Ultra will not be getting the Lollipop update officially.

This decision will affect the sales of its current non-Z series devices on the market, like the Xperia M4 Aqua for example, as these devices may not get future updates. However, Xperia users that won't get the update can still flash custom Lollipop ROMs but this will void their warranty.

Sony skipped the MWC 2015 and didn't announce any new device, many of its fans are getting impatient to see the Xperia Z4. So far, all we got is rumors and nothing is confirmed. The Japanese tech giant is definitely taking its time with it's 2015 flagship.

The Xperia Z4 rumored to pack a Snapdragon 810 chipset and Android 5.0.2 Lollipop, along with 3GB of RAM and an Adreno 430 GPU. It has been suggested that Sony will launch the Xperia Z4 in both 1080p and QHD versions.

Finally, Sony officially launched the Xperia Z4 in Japan today. Sadly, the Japanese giant announced that Sony Xperia Z4 will be Exclusive to Japan Only and will release a another flagship for the rest of the world.

The Sony Xperia Z4 has a slightly tweaked OmniBalance design with 6.9mm profile with a metal frame running around the sides. Just like the predecessor, the Xperia Z4 brings IP68 certification for dust and water resistance.

Sony sticks with 5.2-inch 1080p display and still hasn't succumbed to the QHD wave. Under the hood, it houses a 64-bit octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chipset armed with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of on-board storage. A microSD card slot will let you expand the storage by up to 128GB. By default, the smartphone runs Android 5.0 Lollipop.

Along with the usual set of HDR and the imaging modes, Sony has added new 'Cooking Mode' for clicking the best images of your food.

Sony Xperia Z4 Specifications

Front side 5MP wide-angle camera with Exmor R sensor has been optimized to take selfies along with new shake feature to record videos with reduced shake.

The Xperia Z4 now supports high quality audio performance for wireless playback. Weighing 144 grams, the Xperia Z4 packs a 2,930 mAh non-removable battery. As of now, there is no word on the price and the launch of this flagship in other markets.

sony xperia z5

Just last week, the Sony Xperia Z4 become official. Now, we are passing along what is alleged to be a picture of the Sony Xperia Z5. Earlier this month we passed along speculation about the fifth-generation Xperia Z handset that could arrive in the fourth quarter of this year if Qualcomm has the Snapdragon 820 SoC ready by then.

From the picture, we can see that the rear camera will be placed on the top left of the phone, where it has been. The side of the device appears to be metallic. The photo was found on a Weibo site out of China, and the posting mentions "Type-C" which could refer to a USB-C port. This will allow users to plug in a USB-C connector with either side of the plug facing up. The posting also shows the number "9" which could refer to a September unveiling for the phone.

Other rumored specs include a 1440 x 2560 resolution screen, a Snapdragon 820 chipset with 4GB of RAM inside, an improved rear camera, the Qualcomm Sense ID fingerprint scanner, and a new design.

Japanese girl using xperia in shower

Sony is one of the most popular and first company that makes its whole flagship series water and dirt proof, while we are all amazed with that sort of protection that Sony gave to its flagship smartphones Z series (Xperia Z2, Xperis Z3, Xperia Z4... etc), the question that has never been asked is why making it waterproof ?

Making a smartphone device fully operational under water is a big deal, especially in the japanese market, the feature is not just used for just protection or premium-look but to Sony it has a whole different reason !

Apparently, the exclusive waterproof smartphone's existence is rooted in a peculiar user habit of Japan's female population! ...young japanese teenager girls, to be more precise. According to Panasonic executive "Taro Itakura", 90 to 95% of smartphones sold in Japan are waterproof because young Japanese women prefer to use their smartphones even while they are taking their showers! That's right your Sony Xperia or Sharp AQUOS smartphone are considered as a "must products" in Japan, possibly right next to soap, shampoo, and a trusty sponge all because that young japanese girls like to shower with them.

xperia shower

Can you really take a proper bath when your attention is preoccupied with the latest notifications and updates? We don't know, but we certainly cannot underestimate Japanese women!

sony xperia 5.1.1

Most Android users are waiting for their Lollipop 5.1.1 update. Sony decided not to leave its royal users with older devices without this important update.

Sony is now rolling-out its official Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update (build number 10.7.A.0.222) starting today to the Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, and the Xperia Tablet Z in both Wi-Fi only and LTE-enabled iterations.

lollipop 5.1.1

Currently only certain variations of these models are receiving the update. For the Xperia Z we're talking about handsets with the model number C6602 and C6603, as well as the C6503 and C6506 Xperia ZL units, C5503-badged Xperia ZR, the SGP311 and SGP312 Wi-Fi-only Tablet Z, and the SGP321 Tablet Z with LTE.

lollipop 5.1.1

Unfortunately the most important Stagefright exploit has not been fully patched in this release, so we expect to see a further, smaller update coming in the future to address that.

Sony unveiled its premium smartphone Xperia 1 at the MWC event held in February 2019. However, the launch was only for a few selected markets. Recently, rumors started to surface about the Sony Xperia 2 smartphone and also a mystery Xperia smartphone with no name - and six rear cameras. Now, the latest rumor is about the launch of a new smartphone in the same series as Xerpria 1. The new phone may be launched in Japan on July 9th. The leaked images reveal the triple back camera on the top left corner of the phone.

Above the rear camera setup, we can see the flash light and laser autofocus. Just like its predecessor, the phone may come up with a glass body. It will have the primary microphone at the bottom side of Xperia 1s with additional two more microphones. Apart from the rumors about its design and launch date, we don't have much information but it seem that it would something similar to Xperia 1. The Xperia 1 came with a 6.5-inch OLED display with 4k (3840 x 1644 pixels) resolution, HDR10 playback support, and 21:9 aspect ratio.

Based on the rumors, Xperia 1s is the budget variant of the premium Xperia 1 and could launch with a cheaper LCD display. However, the aspect ratio and the size of the display may not changed. Talking about the specifications of the Xperia 1, the devices comes powered by the 7nm Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 mobile platform coupled with 6GB of primary camera with f/1.6 aperture, a 12MP ultra-wide angle camera with f/2.4 aperture, and 12MP telephoto camera with f/2.4 aperture. The device features an 8MP front facing camera with f/2.0 aperture and 84-degree wide-angel lens for selfies. The handset comes with Android 9.0 Piet out of the box with the custom Xperia UI laid on the top. There is no support for 3.5mm audio jack for standard earphones or headphones. Unlike the other premium flagship smartphones, the Xperia 1 comes with a fingerprint scanner being placed on the side.

xperia R1

That's 2160 x 5050 pixels. Sounds a lot. Isn't? Sony may not sound like a big name when it comes to the smartphone industry in 2019. It used to have a huge reputation for its display and camera technology but then it kind of got lost in the sea of all the smartphone manufacturers. Especially, in India, where all smartphone companies are facing a new mid-range device war you won't hear much about the Sony devices. However, Sony still holds a visible share in the industry, and the most recent launch from the company is the Sony Xperia 1, which support a 4K-resolution 21:9 aspect ratio and OLED display panel. A few new reports suggest that Sony is looking to move one step ahead with the Xperia 1R which could have a 5K-resolution screen.

A Japanese site Sumahoinfo discovered a leaked user-agent profile for the upcoming devices, which shows the resolution of the smartphone to be 5040 x 2160 pixels, making it the first 5k-resolution screen on the device. This is now believed to be called the Sony Xperia 1R, and not Xperia 2. Sony may launch this phone at IFA 2019. So far, the screen size isn't known by as pointed by GSMArena, it could be a 6.5-inch screen at the very least given that the Xperia 1 has a 6.5-inch 4k screen. This would put the pixel density at 899ppi. The aspect ratio is expected to be 21:9 just like Xperia 1.

At this point, some of you may wonder why we need such a high resolution at a cell phone. In normal cases, we don't but if you are using VR-based applications or want to watch a movie with lots of detailed sci-fiction effects, it might be worthwhile. While Sony is certainly pushing the boundaries of screen resolution on its smartphones, the company has long since lost its standing in the smartphone space, and recently withdrew from India and other markets in a bid to turn the business profitable.
