HTC promised to update its flagships within 90 days of receiving the Android 5.0 Lollipop source code from Google, released November 3rd. That makes the beginning of February the self-imposed deadline for HTC to deliver, but it seems that the flagship One M8 will do one better even.
On a closed London event HTC has confirmed that it will start rolling-out the Lollipop update January 3rd, and several other sources have corroborated the claim, it seems, adding HTC One to the mix, too.
With a brand new, 64-bit Lollipop should come a brand new Material Design-inspired HTC Sense interface. Right, said HTC, and rolled up its sleeves. What you are seeing above, are purported screenshots from a test HTC One M8 running a Lollipop build, with the eventual new HTC Sense interface. All that jazz, together with the improved notification system and other new Lollipop features will be hitting your HTC flagship less than a month from now, if this report holds water.

Earlier this year we have reported that Samsung has officially announced that it's building on a bendable/foldable smartphone for this year. Well, it looks like we are getting really close to see this device on markets, it packs codename "Samsung Project Valley" and it has faced some delays and expected to be ready to launch by January,2016.
Samsung is reportedly testing both Snapdragon 620 and 820 for the phone. It doesn't become clear if that's for two separate versions of the phone or just looking for the most suitable chipset. Either way, it will have 3GB of RAM.
The battery will be non-removable, as the Korean will have to design a custom battery for this device but Samsung Project Valley will allegedly have a microSD slot. The screen will certainly be OLED, there are no bendy LCDs.
Stay tuned for more info regarding Samsung Project Valley and this whole new series of foldable devices coming from Samsung very soon.

Even though earlier leaks had suggested that both the Galaxy C7 Pro and the C5 Pro would be released this December in China, that doesn't seem to be the case anymore. According to a leak on Weibo, the two handsets will instead be released next month. No reasoning was specified on the report, as to why the launch has been delayed by a month.
It was only in October that the two smartphones were spotted while being imported to India for R&D purposes. They have since been seen on benchmarks as well and here's what we know (based on rumors) about the two upcoming devices so far.
Galaxy C5 Pro (SM-C5010)
5.2-inch 1080p Super AMOLED panel
Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 (MSM8953) SoC
4GB RAM
64GB/128GB internal storage with expandable micro-SD card/SIM card hybrid slot (up to 256GB)
16mp/8mp rear and front cameras
3,300mAh battery
Fingerprint sensor, USB Type-C
Galaxy C7 Pro (SM-C7010)
5.7-inch 1080p Super AMOLED panel
Qualcomm Snapdragon 626 SoC
4GB/6GB RAM
64GB/128GB internal storage with expandable micro-SD card/SIM card hybrid slot (up to 256GB)
16mp/16mp rear and front cameras
3,500mAh battery
Fingerprint sensor, USB Type-C
Keep in mind that most of these specs are speculated and may not match the final product accurately.

In a brand new rumor, it is being stated that the Galaxy S9 will see release much earlier than its predecessor, the Galaxy S8. The report comes from The Bell and it states that this will happen because Samsung will likely get hold of all the OLED panels it needs by November 2017. Naturally, this will speed up the production process for the company, enabling them to release the Galaxy S9 as early as January 2018.
If you ask me though, that isn't very likely. That is not to say that Samsung can't do that if they wanted to, it's just that it would be a very strange move with virtually no business sense in it whatsoever. The Note 8 will be released to the public next month and if the Galaxy S9 was released in just four months' time after that, it would not be a very strategic release date. We would bet our money on Samsung sticking to its April - May timeline just like this year. Nevertheless, it is good news that Samsung will have everything ready by January because that means the OEM will have even more time to perfect the Galaxy S9 and its rumored modular design.

Samsung doesn't follow any set rules while rolling out the security patches and that seems to be a trend which will continue in 2018 as well. This month, it was the turn of the Galaxy Tab A (2016) to be the first device in the company's arsenal to be updated with the January patch. If you think about it, it's not very often that Samsung rolls out a security patch this early in the month, but nobody's complaining!
As per reports, firmware version T285DDU0AQL3 is being rolled out to the Galaxy Tab A (2016) aka SM-T285. The even more surprising fact is that the patch has begun rolling out in Bangladesh; a region not known for getting the first updates from Samsung. Given that the old tablet is still running on Android Lollipop 5.1.1, it's both surprising and good to see good that Samsung is still keeping it protected against security threats.

Rumors started flying about a possible Galaxy S7 even before the current Samsung smartphone arrived in stores. Most rumors had no reliable basis, but ETNews, a Korean news outlet, has a more promising report. They're reporting a possible release date of January 19th with a premium and sub-premium option.
The two offerings aren't new. Samsung did the same thing with the S6 and S6 Edge. The SM-G930 is the standard version while the SM-G935 includes the curved display.
The report also details the Galaxy S7, codenamed Project Lucky, will feature an ePOP chip to boost efficiency. So far, the specs are up in the air. Processors could vary based on where the S7 is sold. It's possible the flagship device might use something similar to Apple's pressure-sensitive display.
Also rumored are a dual camera arrangement up to 20 MP and USB Type-C support. Pricing isn't worth speculating about. All of this is rumor, but it's a more sound rumor than we've had before.

Microsoft would be updating its IE software to protect against older, malicious plug-in malware. The catch was, the new updates would leave older versions of Internet Explorer without any updates or support any more. New info reveals that Microsoft is going to be pulling the plug on older versions of IE.
This is a move to get users to update to the newer software offered by Microsoft, which explains that IE 11 is a faster, more secure web experience, and that users are halting the progress of developers who need to spend time coding for older web technology that doesn't play nice with modern web tech.
So, When will Microsoft finally decide to pull the plug? January 12th, 2016 and after that, the company will no longer support any versions other than the current IE build: IE 11. Microsoft even provided links to users to different resources that assist with browser migration.

Google released the Android 5.0.2 Lollipop update to Nexus 7 (2012 Wi-Fi) users last week, the minor update brought some much needed bug fixes and performance enhancements. However, only the Nexus 7 (2012 Wi-Fi) got the 5.0.2 update so far...
Latest reports suggests that Google will release Android 5.0.2 Factory Images for the rest of the Nexus family (Nexus 7 2013, Nexus 9, Nexus 10... etc) by Early January,2015 and OTA Updates to start rolling-out by the End of the same Month (Jan, 2015).

As per @Ricciolo1, a well-known leakster, Sony is aiming to upgrade its Xperia Z5 series to Android 6.90 Marshmallow in January and for older models the same update is planned shortly after the Z5.
Marshmallow comes with a bunch of improvements, optimizations and features that'd be very useful to any smartphone. Battery life improvements and performance boosts are the most noticeable changes to the software. But this is a rumour; nothing is fixed and there is no solid timeline. So take this with a pinch of salt.
Sony has been really good with getting the older devices updated. The Xperia Z (not the Z1) was upgraded all the way to Lollipop 5.1.1, although it had an older Snapdragon S4 Pro processor. Just like many flagships devices that were launched last year (apart from the One A9), the Sony Xperia Z5 is one of the many still operating on Lollipop.
It would be quite interesting to see what Sony has planned for their version of Marshmallow. We know that Sony has been working on a near-stock Android build for sometime and by using the Marshmallow's Doze feature in conjunction with their own proprietary battery saving software, the battery life in many devices can be enhanced.

Ever since Stagefright came into public limelight in 2015, Samsung had taken up a policy to keep all its top-tier handsets updated with the latest security patches on a monthly basis. This was a step by the Korean smartphone manufacturer to ensure that this chink in Android's armor cannot affect its flagships. So far, Samsung has kept its promise and as a result, all the major smartphones under the company's banner usually get monthly security patches.
2015 is behind us now and the January, 2016 is coming to an end, but Samsung still makes good on its promise as January security patches for the S5, Note4, S6, S6 Active, S6 Edge, S6 Edge+ and Note 5 are now going live OTA. The update is designed to not only thwart present attacks by hackers, but also has elements programmed into the kernel to prevent attacks that have not yet been exposed.
In fact, the security update won't even have a fully disclosed changelog accompanying it as that would make it accessible to hackers, who can then use that data to penetrate the security system of Samsung smartphones. Nonetheless, Samsung has assured its users that this will fix prime susceptibilities that the aforementioned smartphones may have to remote code execution. Although this is good on Samsung's part, it leaves us with a question, what about the other, cheaper Samsung smartphones and their users?

The older flagships from 2014 have just started to receive the January security update from Verizon. This list of the lucky handsets consists of the Galaxy Note 4, Galaxy Note Edge and the Galaxy S5. If you own a Galaxy S5 under Sprint, you will get the same January update as well from your carrier, but Sprint has not yet rolled it out for the Note 4 and the Note Edge yet.
The update comes in at roughly 30MB or less for all the three handsets and will address the 67 bugs and security issues just as all Android SMR updates for January do. However, this one will also fix 28 additional problems found only on the Samsung smartphones. You will find the firmware version numbers below, pertaining to the specific smartphone models.
Galaxy S5 (SM-G900V) - MMB29M.G900VVRS2DQA1
Galaxy Note 4 (SM-N910V) - MMB29M.N910VVRS2CQA1
Galaxy Note Edge (SM-N915V) - MMB29M.N915VVRS2CQA1

Google is already rolling-out the Android 5.0 Lollipop for its Nexus line-up devices. Samsung is also working hard on bringing Lollipop to its latest flagships by the end of this year. Here's the latest Update Status for Samsung's Lollipop Update...
International Unlocked Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note 4 devices will get the update first, it will start Rolling-out by the End this December with some major changes to the TouchWiz UI.
Other Variants of the same devices (Dual-SIM, LTE-A.. etc) will get the same update starting from Jan,2015. Carriers versions will be a little bit late due to carrier's testing and approval process which always the reason for delaying updates, so don't expect it very soon.

According to a new report published by SamMobile, the much awaited final Nougat update could see the light of day, starting from January 17. The report was literally "retrieved" after converting the piece of information to Spanish from the original source, which was in Turkish. In order to make things easier for our readers who are not familiar with the language, here's a rough (very crude!) translation of what the text in the image means. Keep in mind that the oddities are a result of two machine translations across three different languages, therefore, some of the grammatical and spelling details might be totally off!
"71 = 1 E Translated from Turkish
.7 Dear Sir,
I've used SM is predicted G935F Go dolo of your device to be released as Android 7.0 updates. Of January of 17 of nougat.
Agreed with the competent authorities We would like to reject your comments
OB1. Mnoranuest, - lelas,
All your questions and problems. Ask us to report again.
Thank you for your interest in Samsung Electronics Turkey Customer Service"
The conclusions to be drawn from this garbled translation are the following facts:
1. The Android Nougat 7.0 update mentioned here, concerns the SM-G935F, which is the European variant of the Galaxy S7 Edge.
2. The rollout may start from January 17, at least in Europe.
3. As per the screenshot, the base Nougat version will be 7.0 and not 7.1.1, or at least not in Europe anyway!
4. Online translations can turn out to be pretty confusing!
In case you are not aware, there have been reports of a very limited number of S7 and S7 Edge smartphones receiving the update already, check it out here for more deatils.

If you own a Galaxy Note 4, we have good news for you. Samsung has now officially started to roll out the January security update for the older Note. Keep in mind that this update is only out for the unlocked variants and as of now, Germany is the first country to receive it. If Samsung follows its usual routes, then Netherlands will receive the security patch next. From there on, Poland and UK could be next in line.
The update will come in with the same 67 patches and fixes which are part of all Android January SMR updates. Additionally, 28 of Samsung's own custom fixes should also make their way onto your Galaxy Note 4, post the updating process. Check the details here on the official changelog. You should automatically be prompted to download and install it once it arrives on your phone, but feel free to check for the update manually from Settings > About device > Software updates, if you wish.

The security patch for January 2017 has started to roll out to the Galaxy J2 Prime and the Galaxy Grand Lite. While it's only natural for the J2 Prime to receive the update as it was only released last November, it is both surprising and good to see that Samsung still remembers the Grand Lite which was released almost three years ago in 2014. However, an upgrade to Lollipop is not officially on the cards for the Grand Lite as it continues to run on the ancient Android 4.4.4 KitKat OS.
The firmware version containing the update for the J2 Prime is G532GDXU1AQA4, while the one for the Grand Lite is I9060CUBS0AQA1. If you have an old Samsung smartphone that you want to upgrade but an official upgrade from Samsung is highly unlikely, head over to our firmware section and find the right custom ROM for your particular handset model. The only thing is that we recommend taking a look at our tutorial at least once before attempting to flash any ROM updates.

It was just yesterday that we reported about the Galaxy J2 Prime being updated by Samsung with the latest security patch for 2017 and now we already have news about the Galaxy J5 Prime receiving the same update. The J5 Prime was released near the end of the third quarter of 2016 and even though it is fairly new, chances of the mid-range handset being updated to Nougat isn't that great. However, Samsung has changed its strategy when it comes to delivering updates to its budget smartphones, so let's just hope that we are wrong about this.
You can check manually for the update if you wish, but you should get the prompt automatically when the January security update reaches your smartphone. The firmware version coming with this patch is G570FXXU1AQA2.
If you can't wait for the latest updates which may or may not be officially rolled out by Samsung, or you would simply like to try something else on your device, head over to our firmware section and check out the hundreds of firmware packages we have for you. Just make sure to go through the tutorial first and download the package that matches with your device's name and model number.
