T-Mobile CEO John Legere might be feeling his oats these days. After all, T-Mobile is about to turn on its first LTE market and the carrier will finally be seeing its name on the Apple iPhone some time in the next few months.
During an appearance at CES 2013 in Las Vegas, Legere speaks to someone in the audience from New York and he is an AT&T customer who apparently isn't happy with his service. Legere then calls AT&T's network "crap" in terms of speed and availability, Check the video below for the video conference.
The successful TV series Game of Thrones by HBO is getting ready to its 3rd season on the TV screen. The new teaser is here and it's three times longer than the one released back in December.
The Teaser is kind of short as it only runs for 45 seconds. HBO said that the first episode of the new season will be aired on March 31.
The folks at Mozilla are working on a full-fledged mobile operating system "Firefox OS", the debut of which might be closer than we think. We've already seen the platform in action on a smartphone and screenshots of it have been made public, taken using the Firefox OS emulator.
Information regarding actual devices has been scarce to this point, but we now know that at least one major manufacturer is serious about Firefox OS ZTE.
The Chinese company announced its plans to launch a Firefox OS-based smartphone in Europe in partnership with a yet-unspecified wireless carrier. A launch of such a handset on the U.S. market is also being evaluated, although nothing is certain at this point.
Verizon Communications Chairman and CEO Lowell McAdams sat down with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to discuss football and entertainment the other day at CES 2013 in Las Vegas. Both talked about increasing the technology available to those attending a game, and since McAdams no longer is in charge of just wireless, the talk also covered the ways that those watching at home over cable could enjoy more interactive options.
But the highlight of the discussion was when McAdams revealed that Big Red is seeking to broadcast the Super Bowl to Verizon connected handsets over its 4G LTE network. Last year, Verizon streamed the game to its customers through the NFL Mobile app, but a broadcast would offer a more stable view of the game and would eliminate the buffering that takes away from the experience. McAdams said that a broadcast of the Super Bowl could take place as soon as the 2014 game.
The 2014 Super Bowl will be held at Met Life Stadium in New Jersey Next year.
The dream of quite a few cellphones nerds is to finally get rid of the per minute mobile plans, or the per text plans, and just have a pipe of data streaming to your hand. One big piece to that puzzle is voice-over-IP (VoIP) or voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) as it has become known since everyone wants to brand everything with LTE these days.
The next generation of LTE chips from ST-Ericsson could help push this agenda because they are expected to support VoLTE and use 50% less power than current chips.
LTE chips have gotten quite a bit more power efficient since they first came out, but attempting VoLTE would still drain your battery pretty quickly, which would make the dream Google Wireless carrier be a bust from the start. But, make the next generation 50% more efficient and that opens up some possibilities, especially given that MetroPCS already has VoLTE live in select markets, and Verizon is planning to begin rolling out VoLTE this year in order to have it widely available by 2014.
Canonical founder Mark Shuttleworth, said that the work to put Ubuntu on phones and tablets should be done in time for the release of Ubuntu 14.04 in April 2014. In the announcement today, Shuttleworth said that the Ubuntu Phone OS had been designed from the ground up to offer a "crisper, sharper" experience on low-end phones.
He expects these low-end phones to drive adoption, much like Ubuntu's Linux-based cousin, Android. Ubuntu will have a "lean mode" which would run well on a device with an A9 ARM processor and 1GB RAM, and a "heavy mode" for high-end hardware. Shuttleworth says that Ubuntu will also target emerging markets by offering a "less complex" user experience than the competition.
In the demo showing off the phone (Watch it below), Shuttleworth showed how that "less complex" experience may look. For instance, an Ubuntu phone won't have a lock screen, but rather a "welcome screen" which will be personally tailored to you and the information you want. Ubuntu will also supposedly offer more screen space for apps than other platforms.
NFC (Near Field Communications) is not yet that popular between smartphone users but its included on all the current mobile devices and tablets in the market. There is no many Applications for the NFC use, but if you've ever dreamed of being able to use your smartphone to unlock or start your car with just a tap... just get a Smartphone with NFC cupport and wait till 2015.
We've already got cars like the Toyota Prius that doesn't need to have a key physically inserted into the car, it just uses RFID to know when the key is inside the car, and allows the car to start only then. But, the tap-and-go option of NFC could be a nice way to make it work as well.
The new Hyundai Connectivity Concept wants to give you that option. The trouble is that the Hyundai isn't planned for production until 2015. The concept car would also include an inductive charging pad like the Toyota Avalon that we saw recently.
The space agency said it has been flooded with calls and emails from people asking about the purported end of the world which, as the doomsday myth goes, is apparently set to take place on Dec. 21, 2012.
The myth might have originated with the Mayan calendar, but in the age of the Internet and social media, it proliferated online, raising questions and concerns among hundreds of people around the world who have turned to NASA for answers.
Dwayne Brown, an agency spokesman, said NASA typically receives about 90 calls or emails per week containing questions from people. In recent weeks, he said, that number has skyrocketed from 200 to 300 people are contacting NASA per day to ask about the end of the world. "Who's the first agency you would call?" he said. "You're going to call NASA."
The questions range from myth (Will a rogue planet crash into Earth? Is the sun going to explode? Will there be three days of darkness?) to the macabre (Brown said some people have "embraced it so much" they want to hurt themselves). So, he said, NASA decided to do "everything in our power" to set the facts straight.
That effort included interviews with scientists posted online and a web page Brown said has drawn more than 4.6 million views. It also involved a video titled "Why the World Didn't End Yesterday." Though the title of the video implies a Dec. 22 release date, Brown said NASA posted the four-minute clip last week to help spread its message.

NVIDIA Tegra 4 will offer 72 dedicated graphics cores. All that silicon should deliver 6x time the raw performance currently offered by the Tegra 3, which has "only" 16 GPU cores at its disposal.
The new "Wayne" chip will be capable of handling screens of size up to 2560 by 1600 pixels and will have no troubles recording or decoding 1440p video. In addition, the slide mentions the support of a high-speed imaging chip, USB 3.0, and dual-channel DDR3 memory.
The Sharp SH930W was announced back in November and it was supposed to hit the shelves in Russia a few days later. Well, as it appears things didn't go as planned, but the smartphone still made it to the shelves in time for Christmas.
Sharp has just released the Aquos Phone SH930W in Russia. It costs RUB 21,900 or about €540. Surely it's not one of the cheapest phones around, but given the hardware you get, it still seems like a good price.
In case you need a refresh, the SH930W packs a 5" 1080p Sharp IGZO display and is running on the Qualcomm 8260A chipset Dual-core 1.5GHz CPU with Adreno 225 GPU on a 2GB RAM. The device also include 32GB internal storage, 8MP rear and 2MP front cameras, and a 2100 mAh battery.
