BlackBerry recently shipped 1M units of Z10 devices to various key markets and has apparently sold most of the shipment, resulting in early profits this year. This is very unlike the typical earnings news by BlackBerry as they have posted a net loss of $125 million last year in the same quarter.


Aside from BlackBerry Z10 devices, they have also sold 370,000 units of their Playbook tablet as well as 5M units of earlier smartphones. However, the company saw a decline in the number of users from 79 last quarter of the previous fiscal year to 76 million at present.


According to Thorstein Heins, cost-cutting has been implemented to ensure that BlackBerry will not suffer from further losses. Looks like whatever it is they're doing is effective and that the Z10 is looking good, considering it's been only out since January in UK and February in Canada and the UAE.

Samsung has now officially been confirmed as top cell phone supplier of 2012. Three research companies have identical results in this matter. According to the strategy analytics, Samsung ended on shipping 213 million cell phones in 2012, with an increase of 21.6 percent in the handset sales and a whopping 213.8 percent increase in the Smartphone sells. In the last quarter of 2012, Samsung shipped 63 million phones; Samsung even beat the previous best record of Nokia with 100 million sales in a year.


According ABI research company, Samsung shipped over 60 million phones in 2012 and IDC reports 67 million. But, according to both of them Samsung ended on top of the shipped. Lastly, the research companies have also named top 3 cellular brand of this year but there is slight conflict in it. According to strategy analytics: Samsung, Apple and Nokia were the top 3 brands, whereas according to the other firms: Samsung, Apple and Huawei were the top three.



With Samsung Galaxy S4 is set to be shipped to 50 different countries, speculations have started going around as to the exact phones that will be sold. According to some insiders who work in the Samsung supply chain department, 10,000,000 Samsung Galaxy S4s will be shipped within the first month of release of the gadget in to the market. The same sources are predicting that 30,000,000 Samsung Galaxy S4s will have to be shipped to meet the expected demand by the 2nd quarter of 2013. These predictions are based on the growing positive reputation of Samsung in the market of smartphones. By the end of 2013, Samsung will launch Galaxy S4 in 155 countries. This launch is expected to take the sales even higher before the end of the year.


Samsung is a South Korean company and there have been worries that the tensions of the country with North Korea may affect the production and shipping of Galaxy S4. The good news is that the company has eight other manufacturing facilities in different places around the world. Therefore, even if production in the South Korean production plant was to be affected, the other locations can pick up the flop.

Samsung's has now shipped more than 20 million Galaxy S4 phones since the device launched in late April, according to multiple reports from South Korea on Wednesday. The reports cite Samsung mobile chief J.K. Shin as confirming the number.


Samsung shipped 10 million units of the Galaxy S4 by late May. The company is said to have taken around two months for reaching the 20 million mark with their handset. This is certainly great news for the South Korean giant when considering that it took them 100 days to hit the same mark with the Galaxy S3.


Mark Newman, senior analyst at Sanford Bernstein in Hong Kong seemed to reject the rumours too, saying to the Korea Times, "From conversations we had with some of the key suppliers of the GS4, we remain convinced that the production is in line with their original schedule, and well on track to reach our target of 22 million in the second quarter."

Verizon Wireless is accepting pre-orders for the Note 3 as of now. However, it will ship it a bit latter: on October 10. Customers will have to pay $299.99 for the handset (on contract, of course). Verizon is also offering the option of bundling the Note 3 with the Galaxy Gear smartwatch - for $599.98 on contract. While the smartphone comes only in black and white (at least at Verizon), the smartwatch will be available in black, Wild Orange and Mocha Gray.

A report by strategy analytics today confirms a shipment of about 1.6 billion mobiles in the year 2012. An increase of two percent from the numbers shipped last year. Samsung was the top brand to be shipped all around the world with nearly 400 million phones shipped during the year, 396.5 million to exact. 1 of the 4 mobiles shipped was relating to Samsung, which allowed them to snatch 25 percent market share in the world of cell phones.


The main reason behind Samsung's successful campaign in 2012 was its beautifully designed Galaxy series. Nokia was the second best brand of 2012 shipping 20 percent of total mobile phones shipped. Nokia was 2011's number one brand but due to Samsung's Galaxy series the demand for its handsets went down during the year. Strategy analytics declared Samsung, Nokia and Apple the top cellular brands of 2012 which was quite obvious after high demands were observed throughout the 2012 for the brands.

Smart watches have been around for years but they never really gained enough following to sustain the demand for them. However, this year is bound to be different. Almost all popular brands of smart devices have expressed their interest in launching high-tech smart watches and it's only a matter of who goes to launch first this year.


Furthermore, according to a forecast by ABI Research, an estimated 1.2 million units of smart watches will be sold this year and if this were true, then 2013 might be the year that sales for this interesting device will truly increase.


Also, customers who have smart devices tend to buy similar-brand gadgets and manufacturers like Apple, Samsung, LG and Google would like to bank on this theory and sell their very own smart watches. We think it's about time that the smart watch finally gets its accolades and that manufacturers step up their game and create watches that will shame James Bond's gadgets. If there are Google Glasses, why can't there be smart watches?

More Than One Million Smart Watches will be Shipped in 2013


London, United Kingdom - 16 Apr 2013 - Smart Watches have been around for the last decade. The wearable computing device has failed to take off for one reason or another: they looked ugly, were too bulky, had weak functionality, or the battery life was not good enough. However, over the last nine months a number of new smart watches have emerged that could change consumers' perceptions. Market intelligence firm ABI Research projects more than 1.2 million smart watches will be shipped in 2013.


"The strong potential emergence of smart watches can be attributed to several reasons," says senior analyst Joshua Flood. "Contributing factors include the high penetration of smartphones in many world markets, the wide availability and low cost of MEMS sensors, energy efficient connectivity technologies such as Bluetooth 4.0, and a flourishing app ecosystem."


The wearable computing device can be split into four categories: notification types, voice operational smart watches, hybrid smart watches, and completely independent smart watches. Notification type devices are the MetaWatch and Cookoo smart watches, for example, offering alerts for incoming calls, messages and other notifications. Voice operational smart watches enable users to conduct calls and speak some commands via the device such as Martian's smart watch.


Standalone smart watches with their own OS are moving beyond a smartphone accessory. With the potential to be purchased as a standalone product without the need for a smartphone, they offer high functionality and can connect to other consumer devices like audio speakers. A good example is the Italian smart watch maker, I'm Watch. Other good possible archetypes for this category could be Apple's hotly anticipated iWatch, Samsung's Galaxy Altius and Microsoft is also reportedly planning to release a new touch-enabled watch for its Windows-based smartphones and tablets. "Smart watches that replicate the functionality of a mobile handset or smartphone are not yet commercially feasible, though the technologies are certainly being prepared," adds Flood.
