The Android Market has come in for some criticism over the years and few would disagree that it could use some love. The release of Gingerbread, suppsoedly within the next few weeks, should ring some much needed improvements to the Market such as the ability to include more pictures and videos in descriptions, but it seems that a minor, albeit very useful, improvement is already being rolled out.

Some people are reporting that a Similar tab has been added to the Market and appears when viewing an app description. The tab, as the names suggests, shows similar apps to the one currently selected and should help to make finding apps easier.

Not all Android users are seeing the tab appear, for one thing is appears restricted to Froyo users, but even amongst that band of users not everyone can see it yet. It seems to be automatically appearing for some so just keep your eyes peeled!

Android

One of the biggest problems affecting Android, if not the single biggest problem, is fragmentation. With multiple builds now in the wild it is inevitable that not everyone will be singing from the same hymn sheet.

However, Google most recent set of figures does paint a much better picture than we have seen the past. According to the Big G 43.4 percent of users are using Froyo whilst another 39.6 percent are using Eclair. All in all that means that 83 percent of Android users are now using Android 2.1+ and thus can use the latest generation of apps.

There are of course two caveats to these wonderfully unifying numbers, the first of which is in the 83 percent figure itself, namely that 17 percent of users are still using older versions of Android. That may not seem like a large percentage, but it does represent a lot of customers as Android grows.

The other point to take note of is that Gingerbread, Android 2.3, will be upon us within the next few weeks and could arguably kick off a whole new round of fragmentation just as it seems this round is drawing to a close.

Gingerbread 2.3

Android 2.3 Gingerbread is not out yet despite the old rumors of a November launch. But it should be almost done Google Hong Kong even used it in a video tutorial for Voice Search. The visible changes are quite underwhelming from what can be seen in the video  but the changes under the hood should prove more interesting.

Gingerbread 2.3

We all Now the Famous Samsung Nexus S the Second Google phone but produced by Samsung, it will have the Gingerbread 2.3 and it will be Release According to Samsung on Early 2011. Also Don not forget the Galaxy S Flagship as it May get the Update to Gingerbread Also on 2011 may be by 2011 Summer (as it just Got Froyo on November,2010).

The notification area color has been changed to black and the icons on it are new. The virtual menu key on the bottom of the screen has been placed on a black background and it's now flanked by two shortcuts. The final bit of UI polish in Android 2.3 Gingerbread is the restyled buttons in the settings menu. Also it may support Higher resolutions Displays (1024 x 720).

Many arguments were farfetched yet some were strong indeed. OVI Maps that offer free navigation throughout the world. However, one should not overestimate navigation capabilities, which are just another factor that affects one choice of a phone or smartphone and not the most important one for the majority of customers.

In March or April, Google will offer turn-by-turn, voice-assisted navigation for virtually any country in Europe and select countries in other regions. Since the feature is offered for free, it is a strong move. When that happens, the only thing that OVI Maps will be able to oppose is the ability to work offline, without a network connection. It could be a great advantage if you are roaming but in my experience, most of the time, the maps do not work offline properly, refusing to indicate your current location. And you will definitely have to go online if you want to get some traffic data, so it looks like the navigation solutions from Google and Nokia are more or less equal in terms of functionality.

Roughly speaking, the solutions appear equal to the regular customers with the only exception that Google Maps come pre-installed with many devices and all of them will get a seamless navigation update. In a matter of weeks, the mobile version of Google Maps will become the dominant navigation system for mobile devices. Throughout August 2010, the navigation system was used by over 100 million users worldwide. And those were actual users and not a simple device count that Nokia uses for this kind of statistics.

In today second round of statistics we take a look at Nielsen smartphone figures for the US, which once again show big gains for Android. That Android has made further inroads into the market should be no surprise to anyone who has been following recent smartphone trends, but the sheer scale of Android growth, and the speed of that growth, are mind blowing.

At the start of this year Android held just 9% of the U.S. smartphone market, not even double digits. That has now rocketed up to a 22.7% share of the smartphone market. In less than a year.

The iPhone has remained relatively static, rising every so slightly from 28% at the start of 2010 to 29.7% now. That would seem to indicate that the iPhone 4 has not really done much togrow Apple American userbase, rather it appears to have held it together more than expand it.

Blackberry started the year with a very healthy 35% of the smartphone market, but that has been fast crumbling, standing at 27.4% according to Nielsen. Windows Mobile has gone from 19% to 14% although of course they have launched a new paltform and we can't be sure how it will do yet.

What is perhaps more interesting than the straght up market-share numbers are the figures that come out research into people's upgrade plans. Of those smartphone users planning on upgrading 30% would opt for an iPhone and 28% would opt for an Android device. Not much between them really. Not so Blackberry, which mustered a rather unimpressive 13% of respondents.

Its been a month since Google last report on the Android versions usage and here comes the next one. It is based on data collected during the two weeks ending on 1 December and reveals that the Froyo finally managed to take the lead.

According to the information published by Google, 43.4% of the Android devices out there are powered by Froyo and two out of every five 39.6% rely on the Android 2.1 (Eclair).

The Android 1.6 (Donut) share stands at 10.6% while the Android 1.5 (Cupcake) runs on only 6.3% of the Android-driven smartphones and tablets. The rest 0.1% of the devices are based on obsolete versions.

By the way, the last month share growth of Froyo was some 2.9%t while now it reaches 7.2% jumping from 36.2 to 43.4%.

The European Commission is not known for shying away from a fight and its set its sights squarely on Google.

The Commission will respond to allegations that Google is abusing its dominant position by imposing "
... exclusivity obligations on advertising partners." In layman terms what that means is that companies like Microsoft have complained that Google is preventing partner sites from placing ads for competing services on their websites. UK based price comparison site Foundem goes as far as saying Google is stifling innovation.

Google came out with a nice bland corporate statement in response, saying "
There is always going to be room for improvement and so we will be working with the commission to address any concerns.
If the EU does find fault with Google they can impose fines of up to 10% of the company revenue.

MTC A916

Earlier this month, The cheapest Android smartphone on the market Released. Manufactured by ZTE, the device is known as the MTC 916 in Russia and costs around EUR 150. It looks like a good deal for a handset with Android 2.1 onboard unless you know that its 2.8-inch screen has a QVGA resolution.

Our firm belief is that the fact that the OS supports such screens does not at all imply that they should ever be used. The same is true for the Samsung i550 and i580 with their 240x400 pixels displays. Even Samsung's proprietary shell can't help improve the situation as a lot of software has been created with higher resolutions in mind and simply will not work properly.

The insanely popular physics-based mobile game Angry Birds is about to get a new version for this holiday season. The Angry Birds Christmas edition will hit iOS and Android in the following days, while its webOS version is a bug-fix away from availability. The update will be free to all iPhone and iPad gamers who downloaded the one-dollar Halloween edition, as well as to Android users.

There is no mention of the fourth Angry-birds supporting platform at this stage Symbian^3 we do know however that both Symbian ^3 and iOS will be getting 15 new levels and the Mighty Eagle this December as well. Rovio also shares that the Mighty Eagle will be available as in-app purchase option and will cost 59p/79c/99c depending on the currency GBP, EUR, and USD, respectively.

The promised Lite version of Angry birds meant for lower-range Android phones is also due for mid-December. Seems like the guys over at Rovio have got their hands full. I hope they deliver on all fronts.

Acer

An Acer device has just surfaced on an Italian website. We can welcome, unofficially, the Froyo-serving Acer beTouch E140, which is said to show up soon and to be quite affordable.

Word is the upcoming Acer beTouch E140 is based on the Android 2.2 a.k.a. Froyo and should arrive at the stores on time for Christmas. It is expected to feature a 2.8-inch QVGA display, a 600MHz processor and multiple connectivity options including support for HSPA, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

Acer

By the way, rumor is the inexpensive thing will also pack an infrared port but we guess its a mistake. Also on board there will be a 3.2MP flash-less camera as well as an FM radio.

The Acer beTouch E140 should start selling soon for 199 euro.

Android vs. Symbian

Anyone with even a passing interest in the mobile industry will of course be well aware that as Android continues its seemingly relentless rise to the top Symbian continues its seemingly relentless fall to the bottom. Well that trend is further reinforced by new numbers from research firm GfK.

The new research shows that in Q3 of this year Android overtook Symbian to become the largest mobile platform in Asia. That comes on the heels of Android taking the number one spot in America too as reported just last month.

The figures show that 4.6 million Android handsets were sold across Asia during Q3, an increase of 270% for Android year-on-year. Symbian , alongside iOS, is the chief competitor for Android in the Asia region, whilst in America Android faces down iOS and Blackberry OS.

Acer

Acer have unveiled the behemoth that is their new Android powered touchscreen. The device, as yet unnamed, will be sporting a very hefty 4.8-inch screen with a resolution of 1024x480

Its a wee bit smaller than the Dell Streak so that should give you some idea as to the size of this beast. In terms of the rest of the specifications it looks to be sporting a 2 MP camera on the front for video calls and an 8 MP job on the back with LED flash. Video recording goes up to 720p, which is pretty much standard these days. All the usualy connectivity options are present with 802.11n support. The whole affair is being powered by our old friend Mr Snapdragon and his 1 GHz running shoes.

Its currently unknown what version of Android the device will be running, but Acer have their own UI in there too. Is that a good thing? Time will tell, but hopefully its nearer the HTC Sense end of the custom UI scale.

We All Know about the Area 51 in USA and the Government Alien secrets their, it has been a quite while with no rumors about Spaceships or UFOs... But this just came up on Google!

Essentially people have been leaving reviews of top secret U.S. government site Area 51 on Google Maps. The feature is more commonly used to leave reviews of things like restaurants or hotels so that people can check them out before trying them, but why not an ultra secret facility that is rumoured to house extraterrestial technology?

iPhone

iOS is undoutedly the reason many choose an iPhone in the first place (considering the hardware issues some might say its the only reason), but perhaps you've been hankering after Android. If so LifeHacker has some good news for you... in just six easy steps you can setup your iPhone to dual boot Android and iOS. Take a look at the video below for the instructions and of course be sure you want to mess with your device before attempting any of this.

Justice is finally served and Google Voice is available at the App Store with its Full Features. Apple, with their no duplication of native functionality rule, kept the app out of iPhone-land for a pretty long time but they finally let it in.

And as was to be expected the native app works way better than the than the HTML5 web app clever Google used to sidestepped this App Store rule so far. Google Voice on iPhone is finally on par with Voice for the other platforms. It still offers cheap international calls, free texting and voicemail transcription among other things but now, since Google Voice for iPhone is a native app, it can receive push notifications for new messages.

It also supports Direct Access Numbers, which speed up the dialing process with Voice by eliminating the need to contact Google servers over the Internet before initiating the call.

Gingerbread is just around the corner, Eric Schmidt himself said so at Web 2.0 just the other day, but exactly what the newest version of Android will bring still isn't exactly clear.

However, it does look as if the Marketplace will be getting some much needed love and a slew of welcome changes, which will probably launch alongside Gingerbread. The changes include higher resolution graphics, no doubt to coincide with Android making an appearance on devices with larger screens such as tablets and televisions.

Devs will also be given the option of including a YouTube video in their app promo and there will also be the option of submitting up to 8 screenshots of the app, the maximum resolution of which will be 480x800. Not only would that mean that devices with larger screens are created for it might just be a signal that a web based interface for the market is on the cards.

So far the popular Google Docs supported only viewing text documents but now Android and iOS users get to enjoy the recently added editing feature which is easily accessible through the web browsers of their mobile devices.

The spreadsheet editor has been available for a while but as of yesterday you can edit your text documents on the go. Just visit docs.google.com using your device web browser and start editing your docs by tapping the Edit button.

All iOS 3.0 (or higher) devices can edit Google documents now, including the iPad. Unfortunately, when it comes to Androids, only handsets running Android 2.2 (or higher) and can take advantage of the new Google Docs feature.

Demo Below!

google docs

Google Docs is going mobile with the ability to edit documents on your mobile device being rolled out over the coming days. It will initially be available to English speakers using Android devices running at least Froyo (Android 2.2 or Gingerbread 2.3) and iOS devices running at least iOS 3.x.

All you have to do to start editing your documents is hea don over to docs.google.com on your device. You can then create and edit documents. A little extra for Android users, voice recognition! You can use voice recognition to edit the text in documents.

The relentless march of updating its apps continues unabated at Google. Google Maps for Android has now been updated to version 4.7, just a few weeks after version 4.6 was released actually.

The update to Maps launches Hotpot, which is Google's newest 'local recommendation engine that helps you discover places you'll love based on opinions from you and your friends." The updated version of the Maps app is available for every Android user running Android 1.6 and above.

The Google Mobile blog gives a rundown of Hotpot:

Now you can write and publish ratings and reviews from your mobile phone. We make it quick and easy with a new rating widget designed for rating places on the go. Install it from your homescreen by going to Menu > Add > Widgets > Rate Places. You can also post ratings and reviews directly from any Place page. So, when you polish off the crispiest carnitas taco you’ve ever eaten, you can pull out your Android phone to celebrate the event and give that taqueria the public love it deserves.

Why rate the places you’ve been? First, your ratings will personalize your search results by customizing them according to your tastes. Even better, when you add friends to the mix using Hotpot on your computer, your ratings will point them in the direction of the best enchiladas in town the next time they crave Mexican food, wherever they happen to be.

Google Shopper has also been updated, now up to version 1.3. The update brings new filters for search, 'brand' and 'price'.

Welcome a new IM application named KIK. The startup is associated with the person, who took part in the development of Blackberry Messenger. The concept of KIK is slightly different from that of other IM clients. The company claims to have found the replacement for text messaging. The client is very simple and today it can only send SMS. Every message has its status sent, delivered and read. It is easy to use, but so far we have no settings to customize these confirmations. If you have read the message the sender will know about it. There is no black list as well, but we are promised to see it in forthcoming versions.

The interface is undemanding and the concept is easy to understand for any mobile phone user. Unlike other IM clients you cannot set a status. You cannot be invisible or busy. SMS are delivered no matter what you are doing at the moment.

In KIK blog several feature boosts are promised for the next months. The app is supposed to work faster and need less power (this parameter is already acceptable for Android as the battery does not become dead within hours). Interestingly, we will get a chance to use profile pictures and geo tags will come to the frame. Probably, people or places could be detected in real time, but it is still not clear.

I would be happier if the contact list had been broken into groups to classify people. On Twitter I tested the application and asked people to send me several words. Surprisingly, my KIK list contains around 100 contacts. During the day I talked to everybody who replied. I had extensive discussions with some, while others got only an emoticon. It cannot be considered as a fully fledged testing, but the app showed its strengths during these 24 hours. I liked the simplicity of use above all.

A Nexus S day would not be complete without a leak detailing a few specs that we can expect when the next Google-branded handset launches in the coming the weeks. While this particular shot remains mum on goodies such as processor speed and internal storage size, we get a detailed look at the handsets radio bands, which, just as expected, are primed for T-Mobile network. EDGE/GPRS 850/900/1800/1900 and HSUPA 900/1700/2100 bands are supported, the latter capable of up to 5.76mbps in uplink and 7.2 in downlink speeds. Still, no HSPA+ is present for the carrier now claiming it constitutes a 4G network.

The 5.0MP camera suggested by pics uploaded by GT-i9020 devices is confirmed on the spec sheet, and the phone will pack a 1500mAh battery. Still missing are all the juicy details that could make or break this phone in the minds of many, but we are digging deeper for more dirt.

The Dell Streaks will be jumping from the past to the future they will start ditching Android 1.6 Donut and going straight to 2.2 Froyo very soon. Along with the usual updates that come with Froyo, the Streaks will receive a new UI as well.

Dell will start rolling out the Android 2.2 Froyo update in the UK by the end of November and move on to other regions from there. It will not be available for all regions simultaneously, instead it will be done in stages. Performance improvements, Flash 10.1 and Wi-Fi hotspots are of course on the list of new features, but there is the new Stage UI for the Dell Streak as well.

We first heard of Stage UI when Dell droids were announced. Now the new interface will be replacing the current custom UI of the Streak. Here’s a 7 minute video of Android 2.2 Froyo with Stage UI running on the Dell Streak.

Netflix

Where the hell is Netflix for Android? you probably Ask this Question alot...Well Its been a fleeting rumor formonths and months, and still we don't have it. But now we at least know why.

Greg Peters of Netflix product development took to the company blog tonight to explain why the iPhone and Windows Phone 7 get streaming movies, but Android shut out. It comes down to "the lack of a generic and complete platform security and content protection mechanism available for Android", continuing with:

"The same security issues that have led to piracy concerns on the Android platform have made it difficult for us to secure a common Digital Rights Management (DRM) system on these devices. Setting aside the debate around the value of content protection and DRM, they are requirements we must fulfill in order to obtain content from major studios for our subscribers to enjoy. Although we don’t have a common platform security mechanism and DRM, we are able to work with individual handset manufacturers to add content protection to their devices."

The good news? Peters says "we will launch select Android devices that will instantly stream from Netflix early next year," and they will keep working with carriers and manufacturers to develop a better solution for the entire Android platform.

Dell Streak

Dell UK just announced on its official Facebook account that it will start pushing Froyo update to Streak users before the end of November. The update will start from UK and will be later pushed to other regions.

Dell also mentioned that it will be an OTA (Over the Air) update. It how ever did not commit any fixed date for the Android 2.2 rollout.

We All Know Froyo Features Flash 10.1, New UI...etc!

android

Two security researchers at Intel have uncovered a rather worrying bug in Android that could allow a malicious sort to pilfer your contacts or other personal data.

Normally when you download an app for Android is presents you with a list of things that the app will have access to if you choose to install it. You can peruse through the list and if you think the app has access to too much information on your handset you can decide not to install it after all. Well the two researchers, Jon Oberheide and Zach Lanier, created an app, an Angry Birds level pack, that looks harmless when it shows you that list of things it needs access to.

However, its a spoof app. It actually goes on to install other apps on your handset that are not very friendly, apps that track your location for example, or apps that give the controller the ability to send paid for texts.

The idea that users can download a seemingly harmless app that is in reality a front for far more malicious software will not be something that Google will want hanging over them so hopefully they get a fix for this out of the door pronto.

For the moment just make sure that that app you are downloading is from a reputable publisher and that it really does what it says on the tin.

Rovio has unleashed a new bird and a whole new level board for the Android version of the Angry Birds. The fourth level package is the same as the latest one on the iPhone its called The Big Setup and offers 45 new levels and a few golden eggs.

There is a new bird too the big red one, which has no special power but to smash everything on its way.

With this update the Android version of Angry Birds catches up with the iOS one, so I guess in the future renewals should be released almost simultaneously

You can update your Birds from the Market right now.

Google are pretty good at keeping their apps and services updated so it should come as no surprise to learn that Google News for mobile has had a bit of a revamp. The updated focuses on the UI, making it easier to use on the smaller screen of the mobile. Tapping an article opens that article, for example, and tapping a section heading takes you to that topic.

The deafult view has been changed, it used to be the case that stories were expanded, but of course on a mobile device that takes time to scroll through so the new version will have stories collapsed. You can then expand them one by one as you find stories that interest you.

The update has gone live for Android users and also iPhone and Palm Pre users. Unfortunately Blackberry, Windows Mobile and Symbian users will have to wait a little bit longer.

YAhoo logo

Yahoo! have been busy bees updating their Android app to now include support for video chatting. Front facing cameras on Android devices have not actually been that common traditionally, but that has been changing and with the launch of Facetime ont he iPhone it makes good sense for Yahoo! to be supporting this feature.

The update also brings improvements to the mail feature with support for linking multiple accounts and viewing picture attachmnets in a gallery. There has also been support for contact syncing added so that you have access to your Yahoo! contacts.

Now whilst all that is all very good and true there is, as is usually the case, an itsy bitsy tiny weeny problem that completely undermines all that good work the video calls have to be initiated from a computer. Seriously. So the whole point of mobile video calling is pretty much wasted here since you'd be as well as just using the computer you started the call from.

Opera Mobile

Opera Mobile 10.1 has hit the Android Market as an open beta as of today and its looking pretty damned sweet we have to say. You get the sort of functionality you wouldd expect from Opera, and indeed from a modern smartphone browser, like the pinch to zoom support, desktop browsing sync, "Speed Dial", which is Opera grid of bookmarks that you can touch to access pages quickly and of course tab management.

Official Promo Video Below!

Well we knew it was coming soon, but if you still needed proof that Gingerbread was on the horizon then a tweet from Open Handset Alliance should be enough to assuage any lingering doubts.

Tweet translation:

"Prepare your Nexus One (Developer version) for Android OTA update 2.3 (Gingerbread) in the next few days :-D"

Nexus one

Nexus One Owners Good luck with the Gingerbread Update 2.3... New Features is coming to you but wait for our review of these features First!

Evernote

Universal memory tool Evernote has finalized the features in their recent 2.0 beta, giving its free application speedier access through offline caching, a dramatically improved look and interface, home screen shortcuts, and Google search bar integration.

Evernote

Evernote for Android in its first release was, at best, a mostly functional, Android-sized interface for reading notes at a speed that often seemed slower than just pulling up the Evernote site in your browser. The new release makes good on a lot of irksome failings in that release. All the metadata about your notes is now stored offline, so searching for your stuff in the app, or through your phone general search button, happens a lot more quickly. In addition, every time you look at a note, its contents are stored offline, so you can pull it up inside the deepest, most concrete of bunkers.

Firefox 4.0 BETA

If you have been riding along with Mozilla through Firefox 4 Beta period on either Android or Maemo, its time for a refresh. Just a few minutes ago, New Upgrade to the Firefox 4 Beta for Android has been pushed out!

The NEW! Features:

  • Localization: Its now available in 10 different languages
  • Page loads are 40% faster than in the last build, and the Sun-Spider javascript benchmark is clocking this one in at 25% faster than Android stock browser
  • Minor tweaks: Recently closed tabs can now be reopened, the memory usage requirements have been decreased, Geolocation support in Android, and "Improved Text Spacing"
  • This build takes up about 60% less filespace, though you have have to do the uninstall/reinstall dance if you’re coming from an old build and want that space back.
  • Multitouch zoom has been polished up for speed and accuracy

Google Instant

Google Instant, the real time search suggestion service, has become a bit of a favourite amongst Google desktop users and it has been known for a while now that it would be making the transition to the smalls creen, but until now it hadn't been available for too many mobile users. The open beta has now been released on the Android Market for those running Froyo (Android 2.2 or above) and for the iPhone (iOS4).

There is a video of it in action below, but none of this answers the question of how useful this actually is on a mobile device. Smartphones with a large screen are better able to make use of it, but for devices with smaller screens it will be a case of scrolling up and down to see the suggestions.

Gingerbread

The Android platform was born on this day three years ago, on 5 November 2007, and the first device based on the platform was introduced nearly one year later on 22 October when the T-Mobile G1 saw daylight for the first time.

However, the story began back in 2005 when Google acquired the Android. Then, it was only a matter of time for the Android platform to show up. Now, a few years later this is one of the fastest developing operating systems.

Android 2.3

As for the applications compatible with the Android platform, currently there are more than 100 000 apps over at the Android Market and their number is continuing growing and growing.

LG has been working on a tablet of their own and Join the Tablets Race! But they made a hard choice Android 2.2 Froyo is just not suitable for tablets as they and Google said and even though the hardware was ready, the tablet got delayed, waiting on the software.

So it may be running Android 3.0 Honeycomb and the Device will be Called the LG Optimus Pad... Cool Name huh!

The leaked slide is promising superior performance and the rest of the rumors are in the same vein the 8.9-inches tablet will be running on NVIDIA Tegra2 platform with a dual-core processor away better than the iPad A4 and the Intel Atom 1.66Ghz.

Research firm Canalys released some very impressive numbers for Android back in Q2, showing growth of 886%. It was always going to be hard for Android to beat that and some wondered how sustainable that pace of growth really was. Well it seems that it is sustainable for another quarter at least as the latest Canalys figures show that Android growth was measured in four figures during Q3 is 1,309%.

That astonishing figure translates into a 43.6% share of the U.S. market. It was not doom and gloom for the rest of the pack though, well not all of them anyway, as Apple managed to secure 26.2% of the U.S. market, which made it the number one hardware choice for smartphones ahead of RIM, which slipped to 24.2%.

Globally Apple also overtook RIM, with 17% versus 15%. Even so Apple pales in comparison with the continuing market leadership of Nokia and Symbian, with a still hefty 33% share of the market. Down from 38% in Q2 it has to be said though. Microsoft only managed to scrape up a 3% market share in these figures, but of course their new Windows Phone platform has yet to make a splash so the next round of figures will be most interesting to see how much of an inroad they manage to make.

Google are not known for standing still when it comes to keeping their Android apps updated and the latest app to get the treatment is YouTube. Lets start with the bad news first though, if you are running any version of Android below Froyo (Android 2.2) you won't be able to get the update.

Google have not made the update available to Android 2.1 users the boffins at XDA Developers have! Its not as simple as just downloading the update as you might expect, for starters your device has to be rooted. You also need to make sure the previous version of the YouTube app has been deleted. You can then download the XDA version and install it.

Google have added a handy little feature to their search page rendered on the iPhone. the ability to search through iPhone apps. The new search option is accessed just like any of the other search options like Video, Finance, etc. The results are displayed just like a standard Google search, but with the star ratings alongside the apps and the first line or two of the app description.

The really nice part is that when you click on one of the results you are taken into the app store all ready to download the app. Great to see Google rolling out this kind of functionality for platforms other than Android.

According Google Forums the next major Android OS release is 2.3. But will it called Gingerbread?

The bomb was dropped in a support theme on the Google Code forums, so the source is reasonably trustworthy. Apparently 2.3 is the next major Android version, but this doesn’t necessary mean it will be the Gingerbread.

As you know both Android 2.0 and 2.1 are Eclair, so 2.3 could be easily another Froyo release. We will wait and see how things unfold, but it seems Android 3.0 is not as close as we thought.

Lets wait and Hope that the upcoming Android will have More New Features we will like.

Lumigon T1

Remember the sleek Lumigon smartphone we told you about yesterday? It turns out its name will be T1 and it will be running the latest version of the Android OS 2.2 Froyo. The Danish company finally took the time to announce the handset properly and confirmed most of its specs. There is also a live photo of the device and several videos demonstrating its home-brewed interface.

Lumigon T1

The aluminum-clad Lumigon T1 will be powered by a 1GHz Freescale CPU and will pack a 3.5-inch capacitive touchscreen of WVGA resolution. A universal remote control feature will allow the T1 to control a variety of appliances straight out of the box.

Connectivity is well covered with HSDPA, Wi-Fi, FM transmitter, 3.5mm headset jack. There is no official confirmation on the GPS receiver just yet but we can not imaging they have left that one out. A 5MP camera with LED flash is what the Lumigon T1 offers on the photography end.

If you get the external dock you can also enjoy HD TV-out through HDMI.

Acer Metal

The following leaked pics suggest that Acer will be the next company to make a major announcement before the holiday season. The Taiwanese company is obviously next to completing the work on a couple of hot Android smartphones and an Android tablet.

The first of those is an old friend of ours, going by the name of Acer Liquid Metal. Packing an 800 MHz CPU and Android Froyo inside its aluminum shell it makes a second appearance, following the cameoback in September.

Acer Pad

In the End we come to the Acer tablet that too remains nameless for now. Its screen measures 9 or 10 inches in diagonal and it will too be running the latest Google OS currently available. Its announcement is rumored to come in early 2011.

Many people remember Winamp glory days the veteran of the desktop PC has now made the transition to Android. Back in the early days of the web as Winapm was the Most popular Music player on the web, Well in the past!

The Android version is available right now in the Market and works on versions 2.1 onwards. The app comes with some pretty nice features, such as Last.fm integration and a syncing mode with its desktop counterpart that allows you to manage your music library either via USB or WiFi.

Download it by scanning the Barcode below:

Customized Android

If you want to make your own customized smartphone with Android on it, you can get to Synapse where you can build your Android Dream phone, Synapse offers you to completely customize the hardware of the phone point by point.

Prices seem reasonable, too. They start from 299 euro. Sadly, the company website is currently down but thanks to Google cache you can still take a look at the diverse feature options.

For instance, you can go for a 5, 8 or even 12MP camera. The 8MP snapper will cost you 20 euro more than the 5MP, while the 12MP sharpshooter calls for 35 euro extra.

If you want, you can order your phone with 1GB RAM, 32GB of storage, support for WirelessN and Bluetooth 3.0, a promising 1500 mAh battery, a 3.5mm audio jack, a 2MP front-facing cam, a Xenon flash, etc. but all those come at a price.

Android Menu

We already know the names of the next two upcoming Android versions 3.0 Gingerbread and 3.5 Honeycomb. As Google is following an alphabetical order, its no big secret the 4.0 version will be called I-something. Well, a today’s leak has it that the I release will be code named "Ice Cream".

There is no confirmation from Google on this information, but the Ice Cream name was mentioned by the ARM president Tudor Brown!

So if you looked at the Android Versions Names you will discover an Alphabetic order:

Alpha

Cupcake

Donut

Eclair

The Android-compatible final version of the popular Angry Birds game was released last Friday and now, two days later, more than two million people around the globe are already enjoying it.

But while some people were having fun playing, others were waiting for the crashed GetJar servers, which hosted the download to be brought back to life.

The fact that the game is a free download sure helps for its popularity too. If you happen to own an Android-powered device and still have not downloaded the top-notch Angry Birds game, feel free to follow that link or drop by the Android Market.

Tweetdeck beta

TweetDeck for Android is finally out of beta and into the Market for all to enjoy!... Its not got quite the same rich feature set as the more familiar desktop client, but nevertheless it does offer good functionality albeit without the iconic multiple column approach. Instead the Android app merges different streams into one so as to offer you a single united feed of all your social media goings on e.g. Twitter, Facebook, Foursquare, Google Buzz. The app is free so you can pop along to the Market this very minute and give it a bash yourself.

Watch Video Below!

Angry Birds is probably the most eagerly anticipated game for Android this year, arguably ever in fact and it is finally available in its full form. The game had previously been released as a free beta product for Android users to try out, but today saw the release of the real deal, but not in Android own Market.

The game went live on getjar and it seems that they were not up to the task of handling the enormous demand for the game. "getjar" website has been experiencing problems all day and actually downloading the game has been impossible for many given the current demand. Its a popular game sure, Well probably because it has been released free on "getjar".

Firefox beta

We have been hearing for a long time years about Firefox Mobile. The app for Android has now hit beta status, and its available for download. Keep in mind that we are talking beta and not a Full release, so you can expect some Bugs or non-response. But we recommend that you give a try!

its beta quality, It only runs on Android 2.0+ devices and it takes up a whopping 32MB on-board + an additional 12MB on your SD card.

LG Tablet

LG will likely delay the unveiling of a tablet computer until next year to focus on offering handsets that can rival Apple iPhone, an LG official said.

LG will probably introduce the product running on Google Android operating system at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January, said the official, who asked not to be identified because the plan has not been announced. While the hardware is ready, LG is still working on the devices software, the official said. The company said in July it planned to sell its first tablet computer during the fourth quarter.

In the past month, the South Korean electronics maker replaced its chief executive officer and overhauled management after LG failure to capture the booming demand for smartphones led to a record loss at its main handset business. LG aims to sell 10 million units of Optimus One smartphones before it takes on Samsung Electronics Research In Motion and Apples iPad in the tablet market.

"The company may not fully enjoy the expected boom of tablet computers next year" said Im Jeong Jae, a fund manager in Seoul at Shinhan BNP Paribas Asset Management which oversees $28 billion of assets. "Now is the best time to launch such a product to become top-tier sellers."

Skype

Finally Skype is Available for Android phones. It can be installed on Any smartphone running an Android OS v2.1 (Eclair) or higher. The new Android app has all the usual functionality you would expect from the official mobile application.

With Skype for Android you can chat, manage Skype contacts, and best of all, make calls over Wi-Fi or even the 3G mobile network . The app allows both free Skype-to-Skype calls and paid SkypeOut calls. but so far the mobile Skype app has been reserved for Verizon Android smartphones only.

Android

Google is finally rolling out paid Android apps to more countries. Until now there were only 9 countries that could submit paid apps to the Market and only 14 countries could actually buy them. Not very good when you are trying to make your platform into a global success. Well Google have beefed up the submission list to include another 20 countries and the number of countries that can buy the apps they submit has increased to 32.

Android is very rapidly expanding around the world and whilst its obviously important for more people to be able to buy paid for apps, its arguably even more important at this point for more people to be able to submit apps. Android Market has been increasing in volume steadily and the 100,000 marker is not far off now, and that's with just 9 submitting countries.

LG

LG has just released the official Android 2.1 update for what seems to be their most successful handset this year... the LG GT540 Optimus.

Its only available for the handset in the Baltic region at this stage so the rest of the world will have to wait a while longer. Or they could take matters in their own hands and use a third party tool to flash their handsets with that Baltic ROM.

Here are some screenies. At first glance things don’t look any different. But when you start to go through the menus, there are new settings here and there, there are new transitions effects as well.

Eclair

Eclair

30 September, 2010 Android

This a Chart for testing web browsers speed on Android OS devices and in many versions and this result is the final Average speed of the browsers Skyfire 2.0, Opera mini, Dolphin HD, Fennec and Android default browser 2.1 and 2.2.

Each browser has something going for it  low-bandwidth usage and good performance in poor reception areas for the Opera Mini, streaming videos on Android 2.1 devices without the need for Flash for Skyfire 2.0 some installable add-ons and gesture control for the Dolphin HD and Firefox Sync and a lot of add-ons for Fennec.

But the default Android Browser has good features going for it too especially on Android 2.2 Eclair, which adds Flash support. However, when raw speed is important the standouts here are Skyfire, Opera Mini and the Android 2.2 browser.

Altek Leo

Altek Leo The First phone with a 14MP camera with Android OS on it...Good choice! The Most amazing thing about this phone is that it has a 14MP camera with 3x optical zoom and HD video recording. There are also a xenon flash and a LED video light on board, which makes the handset a must for everyone hoping to leave their digicam at home in favor of their cell phone.

The rest of the Leo specs sheet also looks really impressive. The handset comes with a 3.2-inch WVGA multi-touch display and runs Android 2.1 (Eclair). Connectivity is taken care for by Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS, as well as full range of network data transfer options (GSM/GPRS/EDGE and 3G with HSPA). Built-in accelerometer, digital compass a microSD card slot complete the list of the Altek Leo extras.

This Monster will hit Europe in Q1, 2011 with No info on the price yet.

google nexus one

Customized ROMs for Android are ten a penny these days so you could be forgiven for becoming a tad blase when a new one appears. However, the MIUI ROM is a little different, not least of all for the fact that it looks pretty damn awesome. Its based upon Froyo and at first glance looks like some sort of mashup between Android and iOS.

The ROM  looks to have been built from the ground up and the customisation is very far reaching with everything from the lock screen to the app drawer having been modified, indeed there is no app drawer! It was developed by Chinese devs and is mostly in Chinese at the moment so despite it being availble for the Nexus One, Desire and EVO 4G you might not get much use form it if you do not speak Chinese. For those who do not you can check out the video below whilst you brush up on your Mandarin, if the ROM does not get you excited the rather too excitable soundtrack probably will.

Android Euro

it looks like France Telecom, Vodafone and Deutsche Telekom are getting together in Paris on a Conference next month to see if they cant come up with their very own smartphone OS. Seriously.

At the risk of editorializing mobile network operators do not exactly have a great track record when it comes to creating and pushing their own operating systems, one need look no further than Vodafone's 360 efforts to see the truth in that. Why they would want to pump more resources into the same strategy is a bit baffling. Then of course there is the very pertinent question of whether the market needs, We already have Android, iOS, Symbian, Blackberry OS, MeeGo, Bada, Windows Mobile and the forthcoming Windows Phone 7. Thats a lot of Confusing for users.

Of course this probably has more to do with the networks wanting to regain some control rather than increasing consumer choice. For years the networks were able to dominate handsets with their own branded content and services, but iOS, Blackberry and Android have been eating into that control.

Google Instant search on Android

Search as you type. Its a simple and straightforward idea people can get results as they type their queries. Imagining the future of search, the idea of being able to search for partial queries or provide some interactive feedback while searching has come up more than a few times.

Instant Search for mobile works just like its desktop counterpart. You start typing in a query and Google delivers search results based on what it predicts you will type. There are a few restrictions but in the demo we were given earlier today, it worked like a charm. We expect that this feature will work best on the iPhone and Android devices. Google also says that its mobile apps will eventually support Instant Search functionality.

Here are a few of the core features in Google Instant:

  • Dynamic Results - Google dynamically displays relevant search results as you type so you can quickly interact and click through to the web content you need.
  • Predictions - One of the key technologies in Google Instant is that we predict the rest of your query before you finish typing. See what you need? Stop typing, look down and find what you are looking for.
  • Scroll to search - Scroll through predictions and see results instantly for each as you arrow down.

chrome

Google wants to bring Chrome to More Phone to platforms other than Android, but it a dream that probably will not come to True in the near future. The search giant designed the service with Android in mind and as Hugo Barra the Google director of products for mobile said: "We would like to bring Chrome to Phoneto other platforms, but we have to figure out the right way to do it."

The problem porting it across to say that iPhone essentially revolves around notifications. "The notifications infrastructure for Android [2.2] is amazing and unique" said Barra
. Even if there are technical problems or Difficulties that Google is trying to bring its services to as many platforms as it can, it may become REAL very soon as all platforms is mostly open-source and depending on each other Nowadays.

The mobile Google Maps app just got better. Google has just announced a handful of new features coming to the Android version of the Google Maps application. Meet the Walking Navigation, the Street View Smart Navigation as well as the new search bar, which are all a quick application update away from your handset.

main Google Maps on Android gets Walking Navigation, Street View Smart Navigation and new search bar

Its been a few months now since Google brought voice guided turn-by-turn navigation to the Google Maps but up until now it was only usable while driving a car. Thanks to the Walking Navigation beta feature (accessed through the Navigation icon) you can now get walking directions and see the pedestrian pathways.

Google are putting it about that Froyo is not meant for use on tablet devices. Not that manufacturers cannot use it on a tablet. Hugo Barra Google products Director says: "Froyo is Not optimized for Tablets." Google have already said of course that they will promoting their upcoming Chrome OS for use in tablet devices, but then it also seems that future iterations of Android will be optimized for tablets, as Samsung recently announced they will be releasing Honeycomb powered tablets in the next year or two.

Froyo

All this means of course a certain degree of confusion amongst consumers as to which they should opt for. Google seems quite sure that Froyo is not the one to go for on a tablet though. Apparently it all comes down to the Market and how apps work, or do not as the case may be, on tablet devices. "The way Android Market works is its not going to be available on tablets that do not allow devices and applications to run correctly." said Hugo Barra, director of products for mobile at Google.

Whether you are going for an urban hike or wandering from your hotel to find that restaurant you passed earlier, you will not have to flag down a local if you have got the NEW Google Maps for mobile v4.5 on your Android Phone as Google Maps already had Navigation and walking directions, but today Google is Mixing both: Walking Navigation (Beta) and Google Street View on Mobile. Walking Navigation lets you use GPS navigation with walking directions that are more direct and use pedestrian pathways when we know about them. To try it now, choose the Walking option from the Navigation icon. Walking Navigation has a few changes that help when you are on your feet. For example, your phone will vibrate when you need to make a turn. You can even turn off voice guidance and just use these notifications while soaking in the sights and sounds around you. Google Maps for mobile 4.5 and Street View smart navigation are available now for Android 1.6+ everywhere they’re currently available. Goggle China COP

KaiFu Lee (the former president of Google China operation). is set to launch a new mobile operating system in the next few weeks called Tapas according to The Wall Street Journal. Its based on Google open source Android operating system, but is tailored for the Chinese market with additional software that can identify which city a person is calling from, the ability to sync contacts with Chinese social networks, a music player that goes out to the internet and grabs the lyrics to the song currently playing and then displays said lyrics on screen, as well as an eBook reader. Hardware partners that have committed to launching Tapas based devices are Sharp, Haier and Tianyu.

This is an exciting time for China who is now trying to break through the stigma that they are doing nothing but copying products and services from the west, but instead trying to create solutions tailored specifically for a market of over 1 billion people who will soon be demanding smartphones and the ability to browse the mobile web at speeds we have been enjoying in Europe and America for quite some time. Whether or not Tapas takes off is debatable.

Froyo

Some guys at xda have stumbled upon an updated Froyo build for the Nexus One. The FRG33 update corrects a few minor bugs and adds a new version of the installed radio. Those who have downloaded the software on their N-One have said that the handset is quicker when connected to Wi-Fi. Overall, the FRG33 seems to provide a bump up in speed, surpassing the benchmark score of the phone using the prior Android 2.2 build.

At first, the developers thought they had stumbled on to an Android 3.0 ROM because of the use of the letter "G" in the build description, which, it had been hoped, could have stood for the "Gingerbread" code name for the next level of the Android OS. Instead, what was discovered was the next build up for Froyo. There is some speculation that installing this on your device could prevent you from visiting the Android Market. There has been some discussion on forum boards on how to handle this problem.

It gets the job done for the most part, has the user dictionary to learn based on your typing so it knows what words to suggest, and has the usual trick of pressing a space or punctuation symbol when a word is highlighted to insert that word plus the space or punctuation symbol pressed. I will not go in to a great amount of detail about this keyboard because of how standard it is, but I would recommend using it for a couple of days before jumping in to one of these other options if you are new to android or smart phones in general. Every one is different and you need to get used to how to press keys on the screen before jumping in to more intermediate/advanced options.

Recommended Types of Users for this Keyboard: People new to the Android OS or smart phones in general (only use this for a couple of days though, once you’re comfortable typing, take a look at one of the options below).

If you are looking for a multimedia player/internet tablet, you might be staring at it right now. ARCHOS has just announced five new devices and along with the many differences among them, there is one thing they all have in common – all five of them have the Android 2.2 (a.k.a. Froyo) on board and feature touch sensitive displays (varying from 2.8 to 10.1 inches in size, the device names indicate the screen size).

As for the display resolution, it starts at QVGA (ARCHOS 28, pictured above) and reaches WXVGA (ARCHOS 101). The new tablets are capable of playing diverse type of audio, image and video files (subtitles are also welcome) and give you access to the Internet as well as to thousands of apps found over at the Android Market.

The Android tablets also pack support for 802.11n Wi-Fi and, except for the tiny ARCHOS 28, they also offer Bluetooth connectivity. The new ARCHOS devices are powered by fast 800MHz (the ARCHOS 28 and 32) or 1GHz (the ARCHOS 43, 70 and 101) processors and have spacious built-in storages (some pack microSDHC slots too).

The ARCHOS 28, 32 and 43 should start selling this September while the more powerful ARCHOS 70 and 101 should show up a month later, in October 2010. The ARCHOS 28 is the first Android tablet priced at less than 100 euro. It will cost only 99 euro.

Bluetooth is also on board, as well as a microSD card slot, Wi-Fi and a GPS receiver. USB is also supported and the tablet has full access to the Android market.

Curiously enough Viewsonic does not mention the screen resolution (though we know its going to be an LCD unit) or the battery life. We guess we will have to wait a while longer to find out more about those quite important aspects of the tablet performance.

The Viewsonic ViewPad 7 first review samples will come in early October, Its price will not exceed 350 GBP including VAT.

State Farm might be an insurance company that like any other preys on the misfortunes of everyday people to make a huge profit, but that does not mean they don’t have your safety as an interest. Take the inclusion of a new (On the Move) widget in the latest version of their Pocket Agent app for example. While they aren’t to first to devise an app or widget that will auto-respond to texts in various situations, it certainly does a pretty good job. Of course the aim is to get you to leave your phone alone while in transit, allowing a pre-set message to answer for you, but you could get some other uses out of it too, say when you are in the movies or at a meeting.

Take a look at the new Google Voice widget for Android 2.2 that would come bundled into the firmware of the T-Mobile G2. It turns out that was just the setting portion of the widget, which will also display the text of recently-transcribed voicemail. One of our readers was kind enough to boot up the leaked Froyo ROM for the G2 and snap some screenies of what we can expect come September 29th. It is not anything necessarily earth shattering considering that it looks the same as any other vanilla Android 2.2 we have seen but there are a few additions worth mentioning.

You will see that while HTC Sense is not present on the device, HTC Calibrate is still present. We also get a look at the standard TMo apps that will come on the device. This should give Android-purists that love HTC hardware something to get truly excited about. Feel free to peruse the images below at your own leisure.

Fennec is the codename of Mozilla’s mobile project, however, the official product name is Firefox. For pre-beta releases of Firefox we refer to it by the project's name, Fennec. This is an alpha release of Fennec.

Built on the same technology platform as Firefox 4 for desktop computers, Fennec is designed and optimized for browsing on a mobile device, yet ships with many of your favorite Firefox desktop features like Firefox Sync, Add-ons and the Awesome Bar. T-moble G2

Based on a tweet by Cyanogen, the G2 is not going to be sporting another rehash of the Snapdragon family of chipsets that has come to dominate HTC devices for the past 6 months.

You may remember back in November of 2009 that Qualcomm demoed an updated family of chipsets for mobile multimedia devices. The name of that chipset is the remarkably catchy MSM7X30, and it is bringing a little more to the table than its predecessors. its known that the G2 would be shipping with HSPA+ connectivity.but thats only one of the goodies Qualcomm upgraded chipset will be offering:

  • 720P video encoding and decoding at 30FPS
  • Integrated 2D/3D GPU’s with OpenGL ES 2.0 and Open VG 1.1 API support
  • 5.1 surround sound output
  • Up to 12 megapixel camera support
  • Integrated GPS
  • Support for processor speeds between 800MHz and 1GHz

huawei logo

Huawei may not be a name that immediately springs to mind when thinking of handset manufacturers, but that's an image the company is trying to change. Currently Huawei produces various hardware for networks around the world who then rebrand it with their own colours, but now the company is planning on releasing an own-branded Android handset at IFA.

The handset, known as the U8150, will be running Froyo out of the box, but it's not going to be a high-end effort. In terms of the specifications you will get a 528 MHz processor, a 2.8" capacitive touchscreen and a 3.2 MP camera. Nothing particularly exciting there although it will suport 802.11n to be fair. The specs might not be earth shattering, but they are reflected in the price of the handset, which in the UK will be around the 100 pound. It's obviously going to be aimed at the budget crowd, which is fair enough, after all that's one of Android's strong points, the fact that it can be tailored to different audiences.

dell

Dell unveiled the Aero back in March 2010 and even then nobody was happy to hear that the smartphone is offering plain Donuts instead of Eclairs. And now, when it finally made it to the stores, the Android OS version is still the same v1.5

Despite the software woes, the sleek Dell Aeroweighs only 104 grams and is 11.7mm thin. Under the hood it's got a 624MHz processor, 2GB microSD card, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth support as well as an inbuilt GPS receiver.

The Aero has a 3.5-inch capacitive touchscreen of the uncommon nHD resolution. That is yet another strange decision made by Dell and it may have a poor impact on application compatibility.

Especially during the summer months, staring out into the ocean leads to daydreams of sailing the open water, freedom and exploration. Now you can take three-quarters of this vast planet - the ocean - with you on your mobile device by downloading the new Google Earth 1.1 for Android.

With the release of this feature, escape the hustle and bustle of life on land and discover the marine world using Google Earth on your mobile device. Now, you can check out the landscape and terrain in Monterery Bay Canyon, which is larger than the Grand Canyon, by zooming in on Google Earth below the ocean surface just off the coast. Once underwater, we can use the “look around” button to tilt the view and see the extent of this great undersea canyon.

The latest version of Google Earth for Android also introduces the “Explore the Ocean” layer, which features hundreds of photos and videos from more than 100 contributors who are excited to share their stories of sea. Plan your next vacation during your daily commute by clicking on any of the little blue icons. The gold highlighted icons represent content from th
e Mission Blue Hope Spot initiative.

For those of you running Android 2.2, there are some more treats in store. Google Earth now supports Flash in balloons, so if you have the Flash player installed on your mobile device, you can watch videos right in the balloon. We’ve also made the program easier to navigate; for most devices, you can now use two fingers to “look around” and change your viewpoint, as an alternate to using the on-screen button. This makes it even easier to tilt your view to see mountainous landscapes or underwater canyons. Rotating your view with a simple twist of your fingers is now available on more devices as well.

Google U

TAT UI ConceptIn 2010 and 2011 there will be a device explosion in the Tablet space. We can expect to see a wide variety of new devices ranging from 5 to 12 inches on operative systems such as MeeGo, Android and Windows 7. What kind of user experiences will these devices offer? How do you design astonishing tablet interfaces?

 UI

On one hand we have companies that scale phone UIs to tablets. On the other hand we have companies offering the full blown desktop experience scaled down to tablet size. We believe that both of these approaches will result in crippled user experiences. For example, the tablet form factor is perfect for media consumption and this could be manifested in the UI.

TAT recognizes tablets as a radically different type of device - personal and mobile yet powerful and creative. We are now on a quest to design fantastic UIs that are optimized for this device space. "

Google Nexus one Developers Edition SOLD-OUT AGAIN!

Press Release from Google:

"A couple of weeks ago, we arranged that registered developers could buy an unlocked Nexus One via their publisher page in Android Market. We think it's a good development platform and a nice phone. Apparently, you agree. Somewhat too many of you, in fact; we blew through the (substantial) initial inventory in almost no time, and they’re back-ordered from HTC, who are doing a pretty good job of managing runaway success amid a worldwide AMOLED shortage. Everyone appreciates that it’s important to the platform to get phones in the hands of developers, so we’re working hard on re-stocking the shelves; stand by. "

Android

It's common knowledge that Android is fast pacing it to the top of the smartphone market and some new research by DigiTimes firmly cements that picture. The report basically lays out a vision of the global smartphone market growing by some 57% in 2010 with Android taking the lion's share of that growth. Last year Android had just 5% of the global smartphone market, but that has ballooned to 13.8% in the first six months of this year and DiGiTimes are projecting that figure to almost double to 24.5% by the year's end. That figure would put Android in the number 2 spot globally, behind Symbian, which commands around 40% of the market.

In terms of actual units shipped the projection is that Android will see an astonishing 55 million units ship this year. A year on year comparison means that 55 million this year would represent a 561% growth over shipments last year. Of course big growth figures aren't surprising given that Android is coming fromhaving just one device back in 2008 (the G1) to the multitude of devices that now adorn the shelves at your local mobile shop. However, it is worth pointing out that alongside those impressive growth figures are equally impressive sales figures; 55 million units is a lot in anyone's book, whether they're coming from behind or not.

Android phones

Vlingo Company that developer the Google Voice Actions is announcing that Google Voice action Android version is FREE for all Android OS versions and Phones. Here is the Official Press release from the Company Blog:

"Just a few hours ago here at Vlingo, we all watched along with the rest of the industry asGoogle launched Voice Actions for Android. After playing with it for the last hour on our Sprint Evo running Froyo our conclusion is: Awesome Product. The Google guys have done it again. The app is snappy, has great polish and usability.  Voice Actions has set a new standard that the teams at Apple, Nokia, RIM and Microsoft are going to be measured by.

It’s hard to believe it was only 18 months ago when many in our industry were still saying voice recognition would never be good enough for consumer mobile markets. What a difference 18 months makes. We founded Vlingo in 2006 on the belief that voice is the next revolutionary UI in mobile and since then we have created apps to turn users’ words into actions across all phones. We love to see someone of Google’s stature validating this market.

In many ways Voice Actions for Android is very similar to the Vlingo for Android product just by pushing a widget button on the home screen you can speak to your Android phone and have Voice Actions turn your words into actions. Just like Vlingo you can speak to send a text message or an email, navigate to a business location, search the web, and much more. The Voice Actions business dialing feature is very similar to Vlingo’s SuperDialer—you just say “call <business name>” such as “call Blue Ribbon Barbecue” and Voice Actions dials the business for you. It even goes farther in some areas—my favorite is setting the alarm clock on the phone just by speaking “Set alarm for 8 am.”

For all the appeal of Voice Actions, we think we still have something compelling to offer the market by virtue of Vlingo being an independent provider of voice-enablement: namely we don’t have to preference any particular content. So just as our product runs across all smartphones (iPhone, Android, RIM BlackBerry, Nokia Series 60, Windows Mobile), we also mash up with content other than Google content. Our current Android product leverages Facebook and Twitter for example (and here’s a hint—look for more such mash ups coming out very soon in our Vlingo for Android product). And of course we also have other features not yet present in Voice Actions, such as our SafeReader feature that reads your incoming text and email messages to you."
