Latest News - / Samsung Updates - Posts

The Galaxy S6 Edge+ is receiving the November security update from AT&T as you read this. Yes, you read that right, the carrier is rolling out last month's patch in the middle of December! Perhaps they would have skipped the November patch altogether in favor of the December patch, had it not been for the multiple critical vulnerabilities that last month's patch addressed, including the KRACK Wi-Fi hack and the BlueBorne hack. Nevertheless, that's no excuse for sending it out so late. The good news is that it brings Mobile Hotspot APN with it.

The update is a large one at more than 400MB, so make sure that you have your S6 Edge+ hooked up to your Wi-Fi first. Post the download and the installation, you should see the present build number as G928AUCU4EQK6. As you probably know already by now, it fixes 61 Android OS bugs and six of Samsung's own software bugs.

The December patch had been making rounds on a lot of Samsung handsets recently and the latest names are that of the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge. In the US, only Verizon has managed to roll the update out yet, but more carriers should soon follow, so if you own any of the two devices on Sprint or T-Mobile, you are up next!

Outside America, Germany is so far the only known country to get the December update for the unlocked version from Samsung. However, given the nature of these updates, I wouldn't be surprised if it has already started making rounds in a few other European countries as well. Do let us know in the comments if we are missing anything.

The version released for the carrier-locked S7 by Verizon in US has the build version G930VVRU4BQK4, while the S7 Edge has received G935VVRU4BQK4, if you are wondering. On the other hand, the unlocked variant of the S7 in Germany has been updated with firmware version G930FXXS1DQL1 and the S7 Edge with G935FXXS1DQL1.

Before you get all excited, let us tell you that it's not an official update that we are talking about and not even an official beta version. The version of Android 8.0 Oreo which we are discussing here is unfortunately, unfinished and will almost certainly make your experience a very buggy one, should you choose to flash it.

The ROM in question was leaked on Reddit by someone with the username mweinbach and it's an expectedly hefty download of 1.4GB. Post the download, you should be able to use the phone, albeit with a lot of limitations. In spite of all its bugs, one cannot deny that it is most certainly a chance to test Oreo before everyone else for Galaxy Note 8 owners.

Before you decide to proceed with the download, take note of the following points, alongside the many bugs.

·         Your device will fail the SafetyNet check

·         Android Pay, Samsung Pay etc. won't work

·         Play Store will constantly show your device as unverified

·         There is no Project Treble to be found here

Check out the video above to get an idea of what to expect from this one.

Head over to our firmware section to find all the latest official updates for your Samsung smartphones and tablets.

Samsung's flagship S-series handsets are receiving the December patch from the OEM in certain regions which include India, Bangladesh and Nepal. If you can see the same update in some other nearby regions, it's perfectly possible. It's good to see that Samsung isn't delaying the December patch as it did with the October and November patches. While one can argue that there is still no news about the Galaxy S8 and S8+ getting this month's security updates, it has to be remembered that Samsung does have a huge number of handsets in various regions to take care of! The good news is that Samsung has not been playing favorites recently when it comes to security updates as they are clearly being shipped out as soon as they become available and the price of the model in question has nothing to do with it.

As far as the update itself is concerned, it should address multiple Android OS related issues; alongside fixing ten of Samsung's own software related bugs and vulnerabilities. Do check out our firmware section and the daily update list if you want to try and flash the firmware manually instead of waiting impatiently for the package to arrive via OTA.
