Android developers

Android L official launch is near. The Android developer community has just released an Android L Emulator image specifically for Intel's x86 64-bit architecture.

It will allow developers to build or optimize older apps for the upcoming Android L OS and its new 64-bit architecture to access more RAM to boost their Apps. Moving to 64-bit increases the addressable memory space, allows a larger number of registers and new instructions sets for developers.

Apps built on Java will automatically gain the benefits of 64-bit but those built on the Android NDK will need some optimization to include the x86_64 build target.

Android L Multi-window

Google is working on improving the User Experience of Android with a new Multi-Window tool that will be included on the Android L official release, which is by the way pretty soon (October 16th).

Basically, users can have two open apps at a time. From the recents app menu, users could swipe recent entries to either side of the display, "snapping" them to that half of the screen, leaving the other half of the screen occupied by the home screen or recents app menu.

Samsung already included this feature with the Samsung Note 3 TouchWiz UI, Google took the same concept but made it a lot easier to push an App to fir half of the deices's screen. We should see this feature as a default on all Android L devices.

Android 5.0 Lion

A Benchmark result of the upcoming Nexus (2014) has been allegedly leaked on the GFXBench application. The leak brought us some of the device's Specifications and another surprise, the big revelation is the final name of the Android version it features Android 5.0 Lion.

Nexus 5 2014

Take a look at the screenshot above, listing the Nexus 5 (2014) with the following specs:

- 5.2-inch display with 1440 x 2560-pixel (Quad HD) resolution
- Android 5.0 Lion
- Snapdragon 805 running at up to 2.7GHz, Adreno 420
- 3GB RAM, 32GB internal storage

The "Android 5.0" or as known Now "Android L", final name Lion is referring to the popular Nestlé Lion chocolate candy bar. After Google partnered with Nestle for Android 4.4 KitKat, why not explore the partnership to yet another popular Nestle sweet treat like Lion? This makes sense... but still unconfirmed.

Android L

There's plenty of indication that the next version of Android, dubbed project L for now, will actually be called "Lemon Meringue Pie". Google introduced the Android L framework with the new Material Design language, and now we are waiting on a retail build to hit the shelves, most likely debuted on an HTC-made Nexus 9 tablet first, with a 64-bit Tegra K1 processor, and allegedly 4 GB of RAM.

Lemon Meringue Pie

Meanwhile, a Lemon Meringue Pie Android build, codenamed LRW50D, has been noticed in the Chromium issue tracker. Ever since Android Cupcake, Android builds have carried such short internal titles, which follow their development chronologically. "L" here stands for the Lemon Meringue Pie in question, "R" is for the code branch that the build originates from, "W" indicates the third quarter of the year, and, finally, the number 50 are the days going into the quarter, which would peg the LRW50 release happening on August 19th, while "D" is the fourth edition for that same day.

The Build was runiing on the "New Nexus 7" which refers to the current Nexus (2013) from ASUS. Will this be the final Name for Android L ? Let's wait and see...
