According to Reuters, Samsung Galaxy S3 became the world's best-selling smartphone model last quarter, pushing aside Apple Inc's iPhone, which has dominated the chart for more than two years, research firm Strategy Analytics said on Thursday.

Strategy Analytics estimated Samsung sold 18 million S3 models in the third quarter, compared with iPhone 4S sales of 16.2 million.

Strong sales of the flagship Galaxy S3 - which comes with a large 4.8 inch touchscreen - helped Samsung post a record $7.3 billion operating profit in the July-September quarter.

"Samsung's Galaxy S3 has proven wildly popular with consumers and operators across North America, Europe and Asia," said analyst Neil Mawston, adding the new iPhone 5 would likely reclaim the top spot for Apple in the current quarter.

Requested by a UK court, Apple has posted a tiny link in the footer of https://www.apple.com/uk The notice acknowledges the judgement that Samsung hadn't infringed on the iPad design making use of their Galaxy Tab. The written text of the notice starts:

On 9th July 2012 the top Court of Justice of England ruled that Samsung Electronic (UK) Limited's Galaxy Tablet Computer, namely the Galaxy Tab 10.1, Tab 8.9 and Tab 7.7 usually do not infringe Apple's registered design No. 0000181607-0001

But Apple's notice is somewhat playful and procedes to quote from the judgement in which the Judge describes that Apple's design is "cool" and eventually the Samsung design is simply not as cool. The Judge wrote:

"The informed user's overall impression of every of the Samsung Galaxy Tablets may be the following. From your front they belong to the family which include the Apple design; but the Samsung items are very thin, almost insubstantial members of that family with unusual information on the back. They don't have the same understated and extreme simplicity that is possessed through the Apple design. They're not as cool."

Apple procedes to explain that the case was also tried in Germany understanding that in that court Samsung was discovered guilty. Ultimately, they write

"So as the U.K. court didn't find Samsung responsible for infringement, other courts have recognized that throughout creating its Galaxy tablet, Samsung willfully copied Apple's a lot more popular iPad."

The link must remain on Apple UK website for a period of one month, and Apple is also required to run ads acknowledging the ruling.

Samsung, the world's top technology firm by revenue, reported record quarterly profit of $7.4 billion dollars today, with strong sales of its Galaxy range of phones masking sharply lower memory chip sales.

The South Korean firm said July-September operating profit almost doubled from a year ago to 8.12 trillion won, in line with its earlier estimate.

Samsung, reporting its results just hours after main rival Apple Inc, did not detail its third-quarter smartphone shipments, though these are estimated to have soared to 58 million. Apple said it shipped 26.9 million iPhones in July-September. It launched its latest iPhone 5 on September 21.

Profits from Samsung's mobile division more than doubled to 5.63 trillion won - more than two-thirds of the group's total - as sales of the Galaxy S III, introduced in late May, powered ahead of the iPhone 5 launch. Samsung is estimated to have shipped 18-20 million S IIIs in July-September.

Keep up the good work Samsung!
