Thanks to Vodafone Australia, we now know that Android version 7.1.1 is coming to all the eligible Nexus and Pixel devices on December 5 - 6. According to the Nexus 6P update advisory by the carrier, the first rollouts of Android 7.1.1 for the 6P (NMF26F) will begin on December 6 (Australian Time). Android Central even specifies the starting time as noon PST, December 5.

The report is in sync with what Google had declared earlier when it stated that Nougat 7.1.1 will be ready for release in early December. Also, as carriers usually have access to OEM updates before their official release in order to customize them for their customers, there is no reason to doubt the authenticity of the report. Additionally, the OTA file will also contain the SMR release from Google for the month of December. This one will be the first big update for the recently released Pixel phones and other manufacturers will finally be able to utilize Android 7.1.1 for upgrading their own smartphones.

Officially, the Galaxy S4 and the Galaxy S5 would be lucky to get even so much as a maintenance update, let alone a full-fledged upgrade to Android Nougat. That however, doesn't necessarily mean these two smartphones will never experience the latest and the greatest of what Android has to offer. If you want to experience Nougat 7.1 on your Galaxy S4, try out the Substratum ROM based on the AOSP firmware, compatible exclusively with the LTE version of the Galaxy S4 (I9505). You can expect features such as Battery optimization options, Advanced Reboot, Ambient Display, Smart Storage, Launcher Shortcuts, etc. from the custom ROM.

Flashing the AOSP ROM on the other hand, will upgrade your Galaxy S5 to Android 7.0 Nougat, provided that you have the G900F LTE variant. In fact, there's even an AOSPExtended version of the ROM for the Galaxy S5, that's based on Android 7.1 Nougat. Follow the links to go to the concerned pages and follow the provided instructions carefully. Remember that flashing these ROM packages will require for you to root your device and in doing so, your warranty will become void (if it still is active of course).

Android 7.1 Developer Preview 2 is now available for the Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Nexus 9 and the Pixel C. If your device is part of Google's Android Beta Program, you should receive a prompt for updating the device via an OTA update very soon. Just in case you are not enrolled into the beta program or if you are not willing to wait for the OTA file to come to your device, factory images are also available for users to download and flash manually. Post the update, the build number on your Pixel C should change to NPF26H. On the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P, the build number should change to NPF26F.

The second preview brings support for the Nexus 9, as stated by Google earlier and this build is pretty close to what the final version of the Nougat 7.1.1 OS will look like when it's released in December. As explained by David Burke from Google, these are some of the changes that the second build brings to the OS.

1. Bug fixes and improvements in overall performance
2. Retains the developer features and level 25 APIs of Developer Preview 1
3. An experience that's almost identical to the one which will be provided by the final build

Anyone who is even mildly interested about the Android OS knows CyanogenMod for developing and releasing custom ROMs for multiple handsets across numerous brands. The best part is that they often bring latest versions of the Android OS to smartphones which will never receive the same from their original manufacturers. This time around, Steve Kondik has announced the name of the models that will be compatible with the latest CyanogenMod 14.1 beta Night Build, based on Android 7.1 Nougat. Take a look at the list below.

LG Nexus 5X
LG G3
LG G4
Motorola Moto G 4G
Motorola Moto G2
Motorola Moto G 3rd Gen
Motorola Moto G4
Motorola Moto G4 Plus
Samsung Galaxy S5
Xiaomi Mi 3

If your device isn't listed, do not be disappointed as more models will be added to the list in the coming week. Before you download and install it though, keep in mind that it isn't a stable version and the ROM still is missing a few features (Themes for example). Many of the glitches will be patched and missing features will keep getting added in the coming updates.
