While the name of the next Android OS might still be undecided, the first developer preview of the OS is here. As of now, the developer version of Android O is eligible for being rolled out to the Google Pixel, Pixel XL, Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X, the Pixel C tablet and the Nexus Player.

Google has already given us the timeline regarding the Developer Preview release schedule for Android O. The first one already came out on March 21 and other three will follow consecutively in mid-May, mid-June and mid-July. It is being expected that Android 8.0 will see the first stable public release from late August or early September at best.

Significant changes seen so far in the OS include changes and improvements in the Notification menu, the status bar, the navigation bar, Quick Settings, App badges, System UI customization options, physical keyboard support, Autofill API, background processes, PIP support and much more. It's still too early to predict much about Android O, but reports are coming in to suggest a few of its features nevertheless. Let's take a look at what they are talking about.

"Copy Less"

The alleged "Copy Less" feature will make sure that the user has to do less copy pasting while trying to share info from one app, via another. It would be hard to explain how exactly it will work until we have more information, but it has been hinted that the text which you want to copy paste will be suggested automatically. It could be a part of the new OS as a whole or just the Gboard keyboard.

Gesture Features

Drawing alphabets on a locked screen to initiate apps is not something that's new to Android users as most third party manufacturers have lock screen gesture shortcuts in-built on their phones. However, Google will reportedly integrate the feature inherrently in Android O. Draw a C on the screen to bring up your contacts or a V to turn on the flashlight for example.

More Functionality in Text

It could be so that the OS (or just the keyboard app) will recognize when someone sends you a text with an address in it. Tapping on that address will open Google Maps and maybe will even show you the location in-app. The functionality will not be limited to addresses and Google Map of course.

The info you just read was brought forth by VentureBeats and cannot quite be confirmed as of now. We will keep you updated on things as they become more apparent.

No, Google is not making chocolates and yes, it's been hinted that Android v8 could be called Oreo. Hiroshi Lockheimer, the head of Android had earlier posted a GIF image on Twitter that showed a dessert with Oreos sticking all around it in a ring formation. Normally, we would think that this almost confirms that the next Android OS will be called Oreo. However, we are not so sure this time.

It is very likely that Lockheimer is actually trying to pull one on us! He did the same last year when he had hinted in a similar way that Android OS v7 could be called Nutella. As Nutella never really came to be, Oreo could be looking at the same fate. We will have to wait for at least a few more months before we know for sure though.

Did you like the name Oreo? Do you think this would be a good name or do you agree that the head of Android is trolling us? Let us know your point of views regarding the matter in the comments below.

OEM manufacturers might be struggling to get even Android Nougat 7.0 to their latest devices, but as expected, Google is way ahead of the curve. The internet giant has just started to roll out Android Nougat 7.1.2 for a select number of devices which are rolled into the Android Nougat Beta program. This is of course, a beta version only and there will be more incremental updates before the final version is ready and rolling out.

The list of eligible devices includes the Google Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel C, Nexus Player and Nexus 5X at this point of time. The Nexus 6P is also on the list, but it will take a while longer before the Google flagship from 2015 starts receiving the beta update. If you did not roll into the beta program and would simply like to flash the 827.9MB file manually, download the firmware from here. Keep in mind though that the ROM files are only available for the Pixel, Pixel XL, Nexus Player and Pixel C right now.
