It has now been almost five months since Google publicly released Android Nougat 7.0 on August 22, but not all OEMs have managed to update their smartphones to the latest and greatest from Android yet. Unfortunately, some of the low to mid-range handsets will in fact, never even receive the update. Nevertheless, let us now look back and take a look at some of the smartphones that were fortunate enough to be upgraded to Nougat in these five months or so.

Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P and Pixel C: Eligible units began to get updated to the first build of Nougat v7.1 Developer Preview on October 19.

LG G5 on Sprint: Just after a month since the first of the Developer Preview builds went live for the Nexus phones and the Pixel C tablet, the Sprint version of the LG G5 started to receive its Android Nougat 7.0 update from November 20.

HTC 10: Although HTC One M9 also received the Nougat package just a few days later, the HTC 10 was the first HTC smartphone that started to receive the OTA update from November 25.

Sony Xperia X Performance and Xperia XA: We are not entirely sure on which date it started, but both the Sony phones were among the first to tout Android Nougat from somewhere near the end of November.

Nexus official release: All eligible Nexus devices began receiving the final public version of Nougat 7.1.1, starting from December 6.

Sony Xperia X, Xperia X Compact: Sony delivered the Nougat update to the two smartphones on December 16.

Google Nexus 9 (T-Mobile), Moto Z and the LG G5 (Canada): December 20 was coincidentally the day on which all these smartphones started to receive the update via OTA.

OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T: Keeping true to their promise of releasing the update by 2016, OnePlus managed to roll out the Nougat update for its latest flagships just in time, on the last day of the year.

Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge: Although January 17 is set to be the official release date for the Nougat update, reports have confirmed that many users have already received the final Nougat build, starting from January 12.

After what happened with the CyanogenOS, people were in confusion regarding what would happen to the much loved CyanogenMod community. As it turns out, the events within Cyanogen Inc. has taken its toll on CyanogenMod as well. It was officially declared on their blog that the CyanogenMod OS versions are now discontinued as it is no longer possible to carry the community-driven project forward due to the current failing of the company. Even the very name, "Cyanogen" is up for grabs if any company wants to patent it.

The good news is that the OS might live on in the form of Lineage Android Distribution. According to reports, Lineage Android will be based on what CM has achieved so far and hopefully will continue to improve and update it. We are sad that one of the best alternatives to OEM supplied UI is going away for good, especially since it managed to touch so many hearts by providing Android firmware upgrades to phones that were abandoned a long time ago by their manufacturers. It is nevertheless, inspiring to see the basic admirable ideas behind the project live on, albeit with a different name.

As the new year is almost upon us and Google has officially released Android Nougat 7.1.1, let us now take a quick look at when and if your device is going to get upgraded to the latest and greatest OS from Google.

Samsung

Timeline: No confirmation yet, but the roll outs should start in early 2017.
Eligible devices: Galaxy S7, S7 Edge, Note 5, S6, S6 Edge, S6 Edge +. More might be added later on.

HTC

Timeline: Q4, 2016
Eligible devices: HTC One A9, HTC One M9, HTC 10.

LG

Timeline: Roll outs have already started for the LG G5 (South Korea) and will continue well into 2017.
Eligible devices: LG G4, LG G5, LG V20.

Sony

Timeline: The rollouts have already begun from December, 2016.

Originally scheduled to be released on December 6, the first update file to Android 7.1.1 Nougat is already being rolled out by Google to a very specific smartphone; the General Mobile 4G. We are surprised that instead of the Pixel or the Pixel XL, it was the General Mobile 4G (Turkey) that received the update first.

The file contains the latest Android SMR patches right up to the month of December. Since there have been no announcement or post from Google about this yet, we are not entirely sure about all the details as of now. Nevertheless, the screenshot you see below was taken of a General Mobile 4G phone, which shows us that the update will be a 240.6MB download. Keep in mind that the files will greatly differ in size, depending on the model concerned. For example, Vodafone Australia had earlier declared some details about the upcoming Nougat 7.1.1 upgrade for the Nexus 6P and that was a 650MB OTA download.

Other devices that are scheduled to get upgraded to Android 7.1.1 directly from Google are the Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel C, Nexus Player, Nexus 9, Nexus 6, Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P. Head over to https://forum.youmobile.org/downloads/ to find all the latest updates for your smartphone.

Thanks to Vodafone Australia, we now know that Android version 7.1.1 is coming to all the eligible Nexus and Pixel devices on December 5 - 6. According to the Nexus 6P update advisory by the carrier, the first rollouts of Android 7.1.1 for the 6P (NMF26F) will begin on December 6 (Australian Time). Android Central even specifies the starting time as noon PST, December 5.

The report is in sync with what Google had declared earlier when it stated that Nougat 7.1.1 will be ready for release in early December. Also, as carriers usually have access to OEM updates before their official release in order to customize them for their customers, there is no reason to doubt the authenticity of the report. Additionally, the OTA file will also contain the SMR release from Google for the month of December. This one will be the first big update for the recently released Pixel phones and other manufacturers will finally be able to utilize Android 7.1.1 for upgrading their own smartphones.
