Apple has finally managed to beat Samsung in the global smartphone market for the first time in quite a few years. A report published by Strategy Analytics clearly shows that in the fourth quarter of 2016, Apple captured 17.8% of the market share, while Samsung had to remain content with 17.7%. This difference of 0.1% may not seem like much of a difference, but it does confirm that Apple outsold Samsung, even if it was for just one quarter of 2016.

As one can guess, the defeat was largely a result of the Note 7's failure. Once you consider the fact that Samsung did not have a major flagship in the playing field during the holiday season when every other major competitor had put in one, the 5% dip in sales starts to make more sense. Apple shipped 78.3 million units around the world during the last quarter and broke a barrage of sales records with the latest iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. Samsung on the other hand, sold 77.5 million smartphones in Q4 2016, which isn't really that bad, once you consider their unfortunate situation.

In a year to year comparison, Apple lost market share in 2016. Whereas the company enjoyed 16.1% share of the global smartphone market in 2015, it dipped to 14.5% in 2016. In spite of enjoying record breaking sales numbers with the iPhone 7 series, Q4 2016 brought only 17.8% of the market share to Apple, while Q4 2015 had brought them 18.6%. Samsung on the other hand, lost more significant portions of the market share both in a year-to-year comparison, as well as in a quarter-to-quarter comparison. Evan Blass from @evleaks has leaked the model numbers of multiple upcoming Samsung smartphones on Twitter. In his exact words, "Samsung Galaxy S8 models are indeed skipping SM-G94* model numbers, will ship as SM-G950 & SM-G955. Know what else is in the works? SM-N950."

The phone with the model number SM-N950 is presumably the next Note device which Samsung had confirmed a just few weeks earlier, against reports that stated Samsung won't be releasing a Note in 2017. Interestingly enough, it seems that Samsung will be hopping straight from G930 for the S7 and G935 for the S7 Edge to G950 for the S8 and G955 for the S8 Edge in 2017, while skipping the chronological G94* serial number. It reminds us of Samsung's decision to skip the "6" in favour of "7" and how that panned out for the ill-fated Note 7!

Additionally, rumors are also suggesting that instead of there being a separate S8 and S8 Edge, Samsung will launch a 5.7-inch version and a 6.2-inch version, both with dual curved displays. In our opinion, a 6.2-inch display doesn't seem like something that Samsung would opt for in their premier flagship device as most people are not fond of gigantic phablets above the 6-inch category. In any case, the leaked model numbers should be useful for identification purposes as more leaks begin to pop up in the coming months.

The New Google Hangouts v2.5 is Here. The New update adds more Material Design to the Hangouts App UI, along with some other new features like contextual tool system, Video filters and adding the confirmed number for each of your Hangouts contact.

The location sharing function is the only contextual tool mentioned in this Googler's Plus post, but presumably this functionality could be extended in other ways. "Show me" could bring up a link to the camera app, for example. A revamped version of the timestamp will now show when the other party last viewed the conversation, and not just at what point.

Cosmetically, Hangouts is now adding stickers. These are big, colorful alternatives to emoticons, and similar systems have likewise been seen on competing platforms. Google has posted 16 themed sticker packs, all free for the time being, for users to insert into conversations when words fail them. Video chats are also getting spruced up a bit with live filters. Simply swipe on the video feed to activate Instagram-style filters on top of the active conversation.

You can Now Install Google Hangouts 2.5 on your Android device from the official APK below. It's 100% safe to install. Enjoy!
