Android Desktop Computer

Did you ever thought about using your Android Smartphone as your Desktop PC ?

Well, Christian Cantrell did thought about it. Cantrell posted an 8 min Video on his Youtube channel showing how he used his Samsung Galaxy Nexus as a Desktop PC with Android Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.1 (Not rooted) with some cables (that you may already have!) which will only cost you about $20-40 ONLY.

Android Desktop

Cantrell showed that with only some cables and a little experience can make a useable Android-Desktop Computer with a big screen, Android devices Nowadays have enough CPU and RAM to do this, Here is the Stuff that Cantrell used to create the Android Computer:

  • Samsung Galaxy Nexus (Not-Rooted)
  • LCD Screen
  • MHL cable for the Galaxy Nexus (for Display)
  • MicroUSB Cable with a USB Hub
  • 3.5mm Cable for Sound output
  • Galaxy Nexus Charger to charge the phone while using
  • Keyboard (wireless)
  • Trackpad OR Mouse (wireless)

Chrome for Android

Ice Cream Sandwich Software buttons

He also showed how useful is the Ice Cream Sandwich Software Buttons as he no longer need to touch his phone, He can simply use his trackpad or mouse to click on the buttons which appear on the right-side of the screen as you can see on the screenshot above. So you have sound-output, Display-output, Wireless control, wifi ,Internet access and your phone is charging at the same time. What you need else? pair of bluetooth headset and you are good to go (or good to stay home!).

Chrome For Android and More

He shoed on the video Chrome Beta for Android running very smooth, Google Music, Notes, Facebook, Folders, Search, Gallery and all other Apps with no lag or anything. So, How much it will cost you to do that ? $20-40 depending on the cables prices that may vary between phones and retailers.

Android Music Streaming

We saw some rumors about a Google-Android Home Entertainment device a while ago, Today, We can confirm that Google is allegedly working on creating her own entertainment device capable of streaming music in multiple locations within a house. Imagine a Google Music Player that uses latest NFC integrations and Android OS around you gomee.

The information about the Google-branded device comes from a "Wall Street Journal" report from unnamed people briefed on the project. If true, it would mark the Google first attempt at creating a hardware product without the aid of an electronics manufacturing partner. The search giant is concentrated recently on its open-source Android operating system software for mobile and streaming media devices.

Android vs. iOS

According to a study by Crittercism on Android and iOS, both platforms have their share of apps that crash and it shows that iOS apps crash more often. The company which specializes in providing real-time crash reports for mobile apps evaluated reports over a period of one month and found that iOS apps crash quite a lot more than their Android counterparts.

Report

In the first of the three quartiles we got data for, iOS apps crashed after 0.51% of all launches, whereas Android apps only crashed in 0.15%. In the second quartile the picture is similar with iOS apps crashing in 1.47% of the cases, whereas Android apps did so 0.73% of the time. Things are much closer in the third quartile 2.97% crashes for Android vs 3.66% for iOS.

iOS and Android All versions

Crittercism even gave us a detailed breakdown of the most problematic releases by OS. As it turns out, iOS 5.0.1 generates more than a third of all iOS crashes 33.93%, while iOS 4.3.5 is the second most problematic with 10.62%. That sounds quite believable as these two software versions are the two latest releases of iOS4 and iOS5.

Botnet Android Apps invading devices

Despite a point of contention over the true nature of these applications, a string of 13 apps have been identified as potential threats on the Android Market. One of the largest security software makers in the business, Symantec say they have identified these applications and relate them to a botnet-like virus called Android.Tonclank.

The applications in question run a type of malware called Android.Counterclank. Botnets spread from a host command computer and take control of other device via means of spam messages or in this case, malicious applications.

Beware of these Apps

Un-install These Apps Immediately, If you already have them!

Symantec already say millions of users could be affected and they consider the damage level to be "medium" with regards to data and identification theft. So far a list of 13 applications have been identified on the Android Market as malicious, with the majority of them being mobile games of some form.

Now the handset has been officially launched with Android ICS on board in China (via China Unicom). Of course, this means that if you have already bought the Honor with Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread, an update to Android 4.0.1 Ice Cream Sandwich should be available for your device soon.

Verizon announced during its earnings call today that 15 million Android phones were activated and nearly 11 million iPhones were sold. This news comes after the largest wireless carrier in the United States activated a record of over 4 million iPhones in the fourth quarter.

Apparently these numbers were not too impressive as investors punished the company stock because costs associated with offering the iOS handset weighed heavily on Big Red earnings.

Cyanogen

CyanogenMod is working on releasing their very own application store for Android. The idea was originally by one of CyanogenMod team members Koushik Dutta, who wanted to create an application store that would host applications that were removed from Android Market for some reason. This would include stuff like one click root apps, game emulators, tether apps, visual voicemail apps, etc. Although Google Market is open, some of these apps do get removed from time to time when they do not meet Google or the carrier terms and conditions.

Dutta admitted to having approached Amazon to bundle their Appstore within CyanogenMod if the CM team got a cut from the app sales but the idea was shot down by Amazon.

Cyanogen App store

The other reason to have their own application store is so that they could use a small portion of the money coming in from app sales to fund the CyanogenMod project, which has been made available to users for no cost at all.

Google ICS design

Google has launched the Android Design site, a page of guidelines, design principles, UI best-practice and style shortcuts for developers working with Ice Cream Sandwich. Made up both of guiding principles for apps and interfaces, such as "delight me in surprising ways" and "let me make it mine", as well as the actual building blocks of an Android UI, including tabs, seek bars, switches and spinners, the site marks Googlemost obvious attempt to-date to get all Android coders on the same style-sheet.

Much of what we saw and praised in Ice Cream Sandwich is being put forward as best-practice by Google today. The People hub, new in Android 4.0, is used as an example of using pictures instead of words, while the shift from physical buttons to virtual and the changing context menu is used to push the idea of not overwhelming people with too much at any one time.

Box updated its Android app with  some major improvements in the 1.5 version.

One of the coolest new feature which also takes advantage of the unique value proposition of Android is the ability to get update widgets. This allows you to see which files have been altered and this is especially important for Box, which is used by many companies. Additionally, you will be able to send files to box from anywhere you can open files and that is another nice ability of Android. You can also look forward to new compatibility with third-party apps like QuickOffice Pro.

Galaxy Nexus

Before you begin, try plugging your phone in and see if it works straight away. At the time of writing, the only official Android Ice Cream Sandwich phone is the Galaxy Nexus and it may not work. But future ICS phones might work, depending on whether they have an SD card slot or not, and whether they support exporting the card as USB mass storage. If it works, you should be good to go.

First up, install the necessary tools:

sudo apt-get install mtp-tools mtpfs

Now, connect your Galaxy Nexus to your computer. On your phone, open up the notification drawer, and click on “USB Connection type”. Make sure that MTP is selected.

Then, run these commands:

mtp-detect | grep idVendor

mtp-detect | grep idProduct

You shall get an output like this:

Note down the numbers written in front of idVenfor and idProduct, you’ll need those later on.

Now, run this commands:

gksu gedit /etc/udev/rules.d/51-android.rules

A gedit window should open up. Type this text in it, all in a single line:

SUBSYSTEM==”usb”, ATTR{idVendor}==”VENDORID”, ATTR{idProduct}==”PRODUCTID”, MODE=”0666″

Replace VENDORID with the idVendor you had noted down earlier. Similarly, replace PRODUCTID with the idProduct you had noted down. In my case, they were 04e8 and 685c respectively, but they might have been different for you. Also, remember to re-type the quotes in the line after you’ve copied and pasted it, otherwise udev may output an error. If you’re in doubt, you can copy the same line from this pastebin instead and then replace PRODUCTID and VENDORID as needed.

Save and close the file. Then, disconnect your phone and run these commands:

sudo service udev restart

sudo mkdir /media/GalaxyNexus

sudo chmod a+rwx /media/GalaxyNexus

sudo adduser YOURUSERNAME fuse

Replace YOURUSERNAME with your Ubuntu user name. Now, run this command:

gksu gedit /etc/fuse.conf

In the Gedit window, remove the # at the beginning of the last line (the one that begins with “#user_allow_other”) like this:

You’re almost done! Now, restart your computer, and then run these three commands :

echo “alias android-connect=\”mtpfs -o allow_other /media/GalaxyNexus\”" >> ~/.bashrc

echo “alias android-disconnect=\”fusermount -u /media/GalaxyNexus\”" >> ~/.bashrc

source ~/.bashrc

Again, do re-type the quotes in each command after you’ve copied, otherwise the command won’t work.

Connect your phone again, and then make sure your phone is using MTP, then run this command:

android-connect

Voila! You can now browse your Android phone contents using Nautilus. Just fire up the file manager, and then in the side bar click GalaxyNexus to browse your phone contents just like you would do with a USB stick. You can also add, remove and modify files just like a normal file system.

You might have noticed that you cannot use the Nautilus eject icon to disconnect the phone. Instead, to safely remove the phone, just run the command:

android-disconnect

From now onward, you just need to run android-connect to mount your phone and then android-disconnect to safely remove your phone. Everything else should be handled automatically. I tried many ways of getting the mount and unmount to happen automatically on cable connect, but this was the best solution I could come up with.

They clearly want its users to take advantage of the ability to download applications from their website and push them to their rooted phones and tablets. This update clearly helps both parties, although it still has a few bugs. One of which includes the Android Market constantly requesting to update applications that were not directly installed from the Android Market.

Sony P

The unique-looking Sony Tablet P was announced way back in April along with its bigger brother, the Tablet S. The latter went on sale a while back but those hoping to get their hands on the Tablet P have been put on hold.

Sony P

Not any more, at least in the UK, where the device has just appeared for pre-order on Sony online store for a whopping £499 ($771). Even by UK generally high prices that is quite a lot. In fact it is even more than the bigger Tablet S, which costs £349.

What you get for that kind of money is a unique dual display design that split the user interface into two parts. As you scroll across a webpage, for example, you can see is sliding across the two screens as if it were just one large single display. Each of the displays are 5.5-inch in size and have a resolution of 1024 x 400. This allows the device to fold in half like a spectacle-case and carried around in your pocket with ease.

Sony P

Other than the interesting display arrangement you get a 1GHz dual-core Tegra 2 processor, 1GB of RAM, 4GB internal memory with microSD card slot, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi with DLNA, GPS, 5 megapixel rear camera, VGA front camera, accelerometer, gyroscope, digital compass and Android 3.2 Honeycomb.

The next most powerful Android device on earth is now available for pre-order from Best Buy, that being the Asus Transformer Prime, an NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor toting 10.1-inch Honeycomb tablet.

This device is available for pre order in two forms: one with a gray back, the other with a champagne back. Both models have 32GB of data storage built-in with a microSD card slot to expand by an additional 32GB if you wish. They have also got the official champagne-colored keyboard dock and a mystery portable dock which we must assume is the gray-colored keyboard dock, both up for 149.99 USD and at pre-order status as well.

The Galaxy Nexus will be the first handset to ship with Ice Cream Sandwich and will include all the latest bells and whistles including facial recognition and improved notifications. Owners that snag one at launch may be surprised to discover that Adobe Flash is missing. According to Google "Flash has not been released for ICS yet so as far as we know, Adobe will support Flash for ICS."

Adobe chimed in and confirmed that it "will release one more version of the Flash Player for mobile browsing, which will give support for Android 4.0 expected to be released before the end of this year."

GameTEL

For many of us, the Xperia Play just was not quite tempting enough to throw out your PSP or 3DS, but there is no doubt that mobile gaming is on its way to the big leagues. The dedicated D-Pad was an excellent idea, but there simply were not enough games supported to make it a worthwhile investment.

Meet Fluctel Gametel Gaming Controller a bluetooth controller that latches on to any Android phone that runs Android 2.1 or higher. It will support over 50 games straight out of the box, including Cordy, Asphalt 6 HD, Reckless Getaway, Guns'n'Glory, MotoX Mayhem, Happy Vikings and Zenonia.

Gametel

According to PocketGamer, the Gametel Gaming Controller offers about nine hours of battery life and automatically shuts down after six minutes of inactivity. The controller connects to the phone via Bluetooth, which means that you can also disconnect the controller and play from afar. A handful of powerful Android devices sport kickstands these days so that is an option, but if your phone supports HDMI out then you are in for a real treat. No console, no expensive games just you, your phone, and the gaming controller docking it out on the big screen.

SOURCE CODE

After a few weeks of waiting, Google has finally released the source code for Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. This means you will soon be able to get the latest update running on your Android devices, assuming you have the programming skills. Or you could just wait for your favorite custom ROM to be made available in Ice Cream Sandwich flavor.

Google is saying that the code is still being pushed due to its large size and if synced at the moment it will end up being useless. Their advise is to wait for them to tell you when its ready to sync.

ICS logo

The code is actually the 4.0.1 update, the exact same one that the Galaxy Nexus will be running on. This code will have to be modified in order to run on other devices. It also comes with a full history of the Android source code tree, including Honeycomb, which was till now unavailable.

Swiftkey

Swiftkey, which along with Swype is one of the best virtual keyboards out there, has finally started adding multi-touch support. Still in Alpha, the Android application is still being tested out but we are hoping the beta release will be launched in few weeks.

Here is what Swiftkey folks had to say at itsVIP track site:

We have made improvements for rapid typists. We now properly support multi-touch so you should not get accidentally repeated letters or accidentally missed letters when typing at speed with more than one finger. If you could try this out and in particular look out for issues with long-press keys, alternative character selection or keys where the highlighting gets stuck. We are particularly interested in results from tablet users touch typing as well as phone users with two thumbs.

The Launch date for the upcoming Nvidia quad-core ASUS Transformer Prime tablet has been push back to Early December.

keep in mind this supposedly has something to do with the device debuting with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and not Android 3.2. Apparently, Google needs a little more time to prepare and by "prepare" we mean wait for the launch of the Galaxy Nexus which we are sure Google is wanting to be the premier device to show-off ICS to the world.

Vivid & Skyrocket

Last week ATT announced the HTC Vivid and Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket for its newly developed high-speed LTE network. And now those LTE beasts are on sale on the carriers website with special online discounts.

There is another good piece of news. ATT has also confirmed that both LTE devices will get Ice Cream Sandwich in the first months of next year. The exact date is yet unclear as Google has to roll-out the OS to manufacturers to develop for their devices and then they need to pass the ball to carriers for further testing and release.

Transformer prime

The 1.4GHz quad-core CPU that powers the Asus Transformer Prime sure sounds promising, but the real question is how much of a performance boost it brings. And, as it turns out, the answer is a lot. About two times, to be specific.

As it turns out, the Tegra 3 chipset is not all talk and no action that thing is blazing fast. The Transformer Prime score appeared in the results browser of the AnTuTu benchmark and its more than twice higher than that of the Tegra 2-powered Motorola Xoom.

Even the Ice Cream Sandwich-running Galaxy Nexus barely achieves 60% of the Transformer Prime score. And you should not forget that the Samsung smartphone needs to handle lower resolution than the Asus tablet.

gsmarena 002 The Android Market finally getting PayPal Checkout?

It appears that the Android Market is going to grow another checkout option. The PayPal support that we have been hearing about for quite some time now is finally going to land in Android official app repository.

The evidence for this was found in the source code of the latest Android Market app, which repeatedly mentions PayPal. And if the code is already there we guess Google will be putting it to use quite soon.

Adding another checkout option will certainly increase the reach of the Android Market and allow more people to shop from it. Here is hoping it comes in time for the Holiday season shopping spree.

The analysts from Nielsen have just published their report on the smartphone market in the US and revealed that Android is still the most popular platform there. 43-percent of all US mobile subscribers now own a smartphone and 43% of them have a device running the Google OS.

The 43% market share represents a 4 percent points increase compared to the Android result in Q2. In fact, Android is the only platform to gain ground over the past three months in the US.

In second place, iOS is not doing too bad either, managing to retain its 28% market share. Thats despite the fact that Apple did not release a new iPhone in Q3, so the Cupertino-based company should have every reason to be optimistic about the Holiday season.

The big upgrade in these browsers is the ability for the user to track data use.

The browser is fast enough that Opera claims you can surf without 3D and still enjoy your smartphone. The browser tracks both total data use and temporary use.

Asus decided to delay its smartphone/tablet product, Padfone, until February 2012. Yep that unfortunately means the device I talked about for couple of times in the past will not be available for the Christmas shopping season.

Android Device

The graphic (above) illustrates Android serious problem with the way it updates its devices. This comes after the company recently announced that Nexus One users will notbe getting upgraded to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

The chart demonstrates the major problem with the Android ecosystem. The motivations of the carriers and manufacturers are obvious, which are short term gains and keeping customers by locking them into proprietary overlays. Discussing this matter further, DeGusta says on his site:

"It appears to be a widely held viewpoint3 that there is no incentive for smartphone manufacturers to update the OS: because manufacturers don’t make any money after the hardware sale, they want you to buy another phone as soon as possible. If that’s really the case, the phone manufacturers are spectacularly dumb: ignoring the 2 year contract cycle & abandoning your users isn’t going to engender much loyalty when they do buy a new phone."

This does not mean that Mozilla is going to stop using their Gecko rendering engine that makes

Firefox what it is, it just means that they will ditch their attempts at creating a consistent user interface in order to deliver users a better experience. Johnathan Nightingale, Director of Firefox Engineering, announced the decision on the mozilla.dev.platforms.mobile usenet group, saying the three major areas that should see drastic improvement are:

  • 01: Startup - A native UI can be presented much faster than a XUL based UI, since it can happen in parallel with Gecko startup. This means startup times in fractions of a second, versus several seconds for a XUL UI on some phones.
  • 02: Memory use - We believe a native UI will use significantly less memory.
  • 03: Responsiveness - A native UI has the potential for beautiful panning and zooming performance.

Moving on to the actual apps, as you can see the Music app has received a facelift and looks a lot better. Personally, I am not a big fan of 3.0 app thats available for Gingerbread and Honeycomb right now because it looks like its trying too hard to look cool.

It looks cleaner and more focused. It also dumps the grey/green look for a uniform blue theme. The album art is shown much bigger now than before. The presence of the search key is due to the lack of a physical search button on the Nexus Prime and future ICS devices.

G+

The v2.0 of Google+ app is much simpler in comparison. Just like the current app, it uses a minimalistic and straightforward UI. But there is one notable change in the app. Recently, Google renamed Huddle to Messenger. Apparently, they are not satisfied with that name so they renamed it to Chords, for reasons best known to Google.

Amazon kindle fire

According to the data, Amazon has been reserving 2,000 Kindle Fire units each hour which works out to more than 50,000 daily. Thus, in the five days since the tablet has been open for pre-orders, 250,000 tablets have been reserved. If this trend continues, Amazon will have 2.5 million tablets "sold" prior to its launch on November 15th which would make the Amazon Kindle Fire the fastest selling tablet in history, outpacing both the Apple iPad and the Apple iPad 2 in first month sales totals.

Amazon silk

Amazon announced several new devices today, ranging from a $79 eBook reader that uses electronic ink to a $199 tablet with a 7 inch IPS display called the Fire. One thing they talked about that immediately grabbed my attention was the web browser that comes preinstalled on Fire.

Its called Silk and its supposed to improve your browsing experience because it ties into Amazon cloud services, so it will be able to do things like compress images, text, that sort of stuff. This is not really anything new. The folks at Opera Software have been doing this since 2005 on mobile devices with Opera Mini.

At the end of August we first caught theHuawei Honour, its the best-looking Android handset to come out from China. Now the official press photos is available.

The Honour specs are not 100% confirmed at this stage, but from what we have understood it will rock a 1.4GHz processor, 4-inch capacitive touchscreen, 8-megapixel camera on the back, front-facing camera, noise-canceling secondary microphone, and I guess 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity.

Hulu

Hulu Plus is adding support for nine more Android devices. No, its not yet universally available, but we are a step closer to that dream.

The streaming service is now available on eight new smartphones: the Motorola Droid Bionic, Motorola Droid 3, Motorola Droid X2, LG Revolution, LG G2x, HTC Incredible 2, HTC Evo 3D, and HTC Sensation 4G. The ninth device is the HTC Flyer Android tablet. Hulu is gradually expanding its list of gadgets compatible with Hulu Plus.

While Hulu Plus seems to be making all of the right moves, Netflix has been making all of the wrong moves lately. It jacked up prices by a whopping 60 percent and is now spinning off the DVD service into a separate entity called Qwikster. And yes, I guarantee you will misspell that name at least once within the next few weeks.

US

According to the first mobile media rankings based on audience measurement data from metered Android smartphone usage, aside from the Android Market app itself, Facebook, Google Maps and Gmail were the most used among U.S. Android users 18 years and older. To determine each apps "active reach" the percentage of Android owners who used an app within the past 30 days Nielsen analyzed the data from on-device meters on thousands of Android smartphones.

While many of the top 20 apps, including the streaming music service Pandora and two versions of the popular game Angry Birds, showed similar usage by both men and women, there were notable differences in active reach for social apps. Facebook mobile app saw an active reach of 81 percent for women compared to 69 percent for male Android users. Twitter also had slightly higher active reach among women (16.5%) than men (13.4%). However, Google+, Google new social network, had more than twice the active reach among men (15.8%) than women (7.2%).

Fusion Garage

It seems these days if you are a tablet manufacturer other than Apple, the only way to get your device noticed and start flying off the shelves is to give ridiculous discounts on the price.

After the HP TouchPad fire sale a few weeks back, Fusion Garage, who were planning on announcing their Android-based Grid 10 tablet this month has decided that their original $499 and $599 price tags for the Wi-Fi and the Wi-Fi + 3G model was perhaps a bit too ambitious. Fearing they may have another JooJoo on their hands, they have announced a rather generous price-drop.

$299 makes the 10-inch, 16GB Android tablet with Tegra 2 processor.Unfortunately, the launch date of the device has been pushed back by a couple of weeks, and it will now be coming out on October,1.

gsmarena 001 Netflix comes to all Android devices running Froyo or Gingerbread, aims to sweeten their service

Compatibility has only slowly been opening up since, but has now come to support a much wider variety of handsets since launch. However, the Netflix team have just announced that their app will now be able to work with any Android device running Froyo 2.2 or Gingerbread 2.3.

Originally, those without official support could easily instil their droid with Netflix goodness once the .apk had been uncovered but this news means that for most, they can keep it all above board from now on and access their content on-the-go with Netflix blessing.

Of course this is not quite as good news for those who have been hoping for some Netflix action on their Honeycomb tabs, but all in due time, baby steps and all that.

Android

We have very little to go on when it comes to Google latest version of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich. Also not known about Ice Cream Sandwich is the actual version number, but we do know that it should debut on the next Nexus handsetsometime in late October or early November. So, even with the little we know about ICS, we are already beginning to hear a few tidbits about the next version of the mobile OS, which is set to be named "Jelly Bean".

What do we know about Jelly Bean is Not much, actually. Other than the name itself, the only thing that is known is that some "game-changing" features that were supposed to land in Ice Cream Sandwich have been pushed to this update. Obviously we do not know what these features may be but apparently they were ambitious enough for Google to want to spend more time on them. Whatever these features may be, we can imagine they will be worth the wait.
