The OnePlus 12's QC seems to be a bit lacking

The OnePlus 12 is the company's latest flagship smartphone and commands a pretty hefty price tag, and as such, you would expect it to have a decent build quality. Unfortunately, that isn't the case as some OnePlus 12 owners in China are discovering.

According to several posts on Weibo, it looks like the QC on the OnePlus 12 is a bit lacking. Users are reporting gaps between the phone's camera housing and the rest of the phone's body, which is honestly a little unsightly once you've seen it. To be fair, it's not particularly obvious but the fact that it exists does raise some eyebrows.

Also, some users are reporting that there is an excessive amount of glue used around the camera housing area. It is unclear how widespread this issue is, but it seems to have been enough for Redmi general manager Lu Weibing to comment about it, where the executive took a dig at OnePlus for having "looser" quality standards compared to Redmi.

To be fair, it is impossible for companies to produce 100% perfect phones all the time. Sometimes things do get overlooked as QC is usually done by humans. Hopefully OnePlus is aware of this and will do something to rectify the units already sold and also those that are still in the process of being made. The OnePlus 12 is expected to launch globally in January 2024 so fingers crossed that the company manages to sort this out before then!

Samsung Galaxy Fit 3 is now one step closer to launch

We've been hearing a bit about the Samsung Galaxy Fit 3 for a while now. If you're interested in the wearable, then you might be interested to learn that it was recently spotted at the Bluetooth SIG database which means that we are now one step closer to seeing it launch.

Keep in mind that the previous rumors did suggest a 2024 launch, and while we are still in 2023, there's a good chance it won't make it by the end of the year. Samsung hasn't confirmed the launch date yet, but it could either debut at CES 2024, or maybe even during the Galaxy S24's launch which is rumored to take place on the 17th of January, 2024.

As for its specs and features, the Galaxy Fit 3 is rumored to sport a 1.1-inch AMOLED display with a higher resolution, offering users an upgrade over the Galaxy Fit 2. There is no word on what other features we can expect, but if you're the type that prefers fitness trackers over a smartwatch, this could be something to watch out for.

Also, another thing to note, the rumors have suggested that the price of the Galaxy Fit 3 will be more than its predecessor, about twice the price. It will still be somewhat relatively affordable compared to a smartwatch, but this new price suggests that it isn't really the same budget offering as the Galaxy Fit 2.

Apple executive involved in multi-touch, Touch ID, Face ID, and Vision Pro is leaving

The name Steve Hotelling might mean nothing to you but you probably are familiar with many of the inventions he worked on at Apple. Bloomberg reports that Hotelling is leaving Apple after a long and illustrious career. He was involved in the creation of several important features that are used on many of Apple's most important products today. Multi-touch was one, for example.

You might remember Steve Jobs introducing the iPhone on January 9th, 2007 when he said, "And we have invented a new technology called multi-touch which is phenomenal. It works like magic. You don't need a stylus. It's far more accurate than any touch display that's ever been shipped. It ignores unintended touches, it's super smart. You can do multi-finger gestures on it and boy, have we patented it."

Of course, multi-touch technology is the reason we can pinch and zoom on our smartphones. It became a key feature for the iPhone in the early days before eventually making its way to Android devices. Apple sued HTC in 2010 over 20 patents that Apple alleged HTC had infringed on with its smartphones. One of those patents was for multi-touch. Apple and HTC settled two years later with HTC agreeing to license the patents.

If Hotelling had worked on multi-touch and nothing else, he could have left Apple knowing that he helped create an important technology used on all smartphones today. But he also helped create Touch ID which was the first dependable fingerprint scanner on a phone. Motorola's Atrix 4G was the first smartphone in the touchscreen era to include a fingerprint scanner; the phone was released in 2011 and it set back smartphone-based fingerprint scanners by two years.

In 2012, Apple purchased biometric security firm AuthenTec for $356 million and Touch ID debuted the next year on the iPhone 5s. Hotelling also worked on secure 3D facial recognition system Face ID which debuted on the iPhone X in 2017. He also had a hand in the 120Hz ProMotion display, and was in charge of the camera engineering team which worked to develop custom image sensors. He also had a role to play in the development of Apple's Vision Pro spatial computer which will be released early next year.

A longtime colleague told Bloomberg that "No one was more brilliant than Steve." He worked his way up to vice president at Apple where he reported to Johny Srouji, the company's senior vice president of hardware technologies, and he leaves Apple as the executive responsible for touchscreen technologies, health sensors, and Face ID. Several veteran Apple executives on Srouji's team will take up where Hotelling left off.

Google's Gemini AI puts OpenAI's GPT-4 on notice

OpenAI's ChatGPT has undergone several improvements since it was launched, with GPT-4 being its most capable to date. While Google might have been late to the party, it seems that they are wasting no time as they have since announced Gemini AI, their answer to OpenAI's GPT-4.

While there is no doubt that Gemini AI will be able to process text and language, it will be able to do more than that. In addition to text, Gemini will also be able to process other forms of data including images, video, and audio, making it more versatile than what the competitors have to offer.

In fact, Google has claimed that in their tests, Gemini has managed to outperform GPT-4 in 30 out of 32 tests that involve video and audio processing, which if true is pretty impressive. We know we said Google was late to the game, but Google has actually been developing AI technologies for years, it's just that for the most part, it was never really available to the general public.

OpenAI surprised everyone when they decided to open ChatGPT to the public, which led to a scramble in the tech industry where the major players, Google included, started launching public versions of their AI tools. Google expects Gemini to power a variety of the company's products and services, including Android smartphones and even data centers.

Good news! HTC says they'll keep releasing phones for the foreseeable future

HTC used to be one of the darlings of the smartphone industry in the early days, but after several missteps, the company more or less called it quits. They do release a phone every now and then, but if you're a fan of HTC's phones, then you might be interested to learn that they aren't giving up completely.

In a report from GizmoChina, Huang Zhaoying, HTC's Senior Vice President of global business and marketing revealed that the company plans to release 1-2 new phones every year for the foreseeable future. Before you get too excited, don't expect to see any flagship phones.

Instead, the company seems to be looking towards releasing mid-range models using Qualcomm's Snapdragon 7 series of chipsets. This isn't a bad thing, though. While flagship phones have a lot of fancy, high-end features, most companies make the bulk of their money through entry-level and mid-range offerings which usually carry a higher profit margin.

Instead of spending more money investing in tech and competing with others like Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi, and so on, HTC might be playing it smart and safe by going with more established tech that's been proven to work. So if you're a HTC fan, then you can look forward to some new HTC phones in 2024.

Google's Pixel Fold could be getting a new camera feature

The Google Pixel Fold, like most foldables, has two displays. One display is on the outside which resembles your more typical smartphone display, and the other is on the inside where it transforms the phone into a tablet-like device.

A report from Android Authority has revealed a new feature that could be coming to the Pixel Fold in which when taking photos, users will be able to take advantage of the dual displays.

Right now, the only way the dual display works simultaneously is when you use the Dual Screen Interpreter Mode in Google Translate, but the APK teardown has revealed that Google could be bringing dual screen functionality when it comes to taking photos.

Based on the code strings they discovered, it seems that the outer display (or the rear display as Google calls it) can be turned on while you're snapping a photo. This will allow you to show your subject a preview of the photo, so if you're trying to direct someone to take your photo, the outer display can act as a viewfinder of sorts so you can adjust your pose or change the angles if it's not to your liking.

The code also mentions how this Dual Screen preview feature won't work if Battery Saver mode is enabled, or if your device is running too hot. There's no mention of when it will be released so we'll have to wait.

Apple to stop iPhone Pro line's periscope zoom segregation with big help from LG

In the past iPhone generation or two, Apple has embarked on a fragmentation spree like no other in its phone-making history. Not only are the "regular" iPhones with less capable camera kits and displays, but they also come with slower chipsets.

Unfortunately, with the iPhone 15 line, Apple also decided to split the iPhone Pro and Pro Max models, anointing only its most expensive handset with the unique Tetraprism periscope zoom lenses that offer lossless magnification beyond Apple's usual 3x telephoto fare.

5x Tetraprism zoom on the Apple iPhone 16 Pro

Enough, said Apple, and decided to stop the optical zoom segregation, at least for the more expensive Pro line of phones. After famed Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo probed their Apple supply chain sources and came away with the impression that Apple may expand its optical zoom exclusivity from the Pro Max line to the 16 Pro in 2024, now The Elec tells exactly which suppliers have been tasked with the deed.

LG Innotek, one of the folded zoom actuator suppliers for Apple's Tetrapism camera on the iPhone 15 Pro Max, has proved to be the most stable one, so Apple will reportedly be tasking it with the lion's share of its expanded orders next year. Currently, the folded zoom actuator module is predominantly supplied by LG Innotek, as the other supplier Jahwa Electronics had more troubles with yield and quality than LG which reflected on the iPhone 15 Pro Max's shipping times at the beginning of the sales period. Apple has reportedly trusted LG Innotek with up to 70% of its folded zoom actuator needs next year, so it will benefit greatly from the bump in order quantity.

Needless to say, the bigger order amount will be due to the fact that both the iPhone 16 Pro Max and the iPhone 16 Pro will offer Apple's unique Tetraprism 5x optical zoom concoction. It will fit, as the iPhone 16 Pro is reportedly going to grow in size to 6.3 inches next year, with the iPhone 16 Pro Max growing to 6.9", as Apple is preparing to space its display diagonals a bit more, rather than offer two phones in the same 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch categories, be they with different screen or camera tech.

Samsung could be developing their own 1-inch camera sensor

These days, many handset makers are bumping up the megapixel count on their phones, which is more of a marketing gimmick rather than practicality. Don't get us wrong, a higher resolution does have its benefits, but since most photos tend to end up on social media which are then viewed on small screens, it's not quite as useful.

That could change in future Samsung phones. According to a post by Tech_Reve on X, apparently Samsung is working on a 1-inch camera sensor. There aren't too many phones with 1-inch sensors at the moment and only Xiaomi comes to mind where they used a 1-inch sensor made by Sony.

The post claims that Samsung is apparently developing their own sensor, but it is unclear when it will debut. A separate post on X by Tech_Reve also claims that for the Galaxy S25, which is coming in 2025, will no longer use Samsung's own GN3 sensor and could use a Sony sensor, so it seems that Samsung's 1-inch sensor could debut after that.

It is also unclear if this Sony sensor that will launch in the Galaxy S25 will be the same 1-inch sensor (or a successor) as the one found in the Xiaomi 12S, so we'll have to wait and see. 2025 is still a very long way to go so while Tech_Reve does have a pretty good track record when it comes to leaks, it's still a good idea to take it with a grain of salt for now.

OnePlus 12 won't match the Galaxy S24 Ultra with this one key feature

Man, what is there not to love about the upcoming OnePlus 12? With a 6.82-inch OLED screen with 2K resolution, 120Hz refresh rate, and peak brightness of 4,500 nits, the device is expected to be powered by one of the top application processors next year, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. Toss in up to 24GB of LPDDR5X RAM, up to 1TB of UFS 4.0 storage, a huge 5400mAh battery, and a 50MP primary camera, and there will be enough features to furrow some brows over at Samsung.

One feature allows the touchscreen to register touch input even when it is wet from the rain. The IR blaster will allow a user to employ the OnePlus 12 as a remote control for the television. Yes, the OnePlus 12 seems to have it all except in one area where it won't match the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, water resistance. Ever since the beginning with the OnePlus One when the company tried to save money by not paying for IP certification, water protection wasn't so important as getting the phone down to a lower price point.

For the OnePlus 7 in 2019, the company created an ad (which we've embedded in this story) that showed the new phone getting submerged in a bucket full of water. That was cheaper than getting the phone certified with an IP rating and hinted that the device would still work after swimming in a bucketful of water. Eventually, OnePlus started paying for IP ratings; for example, OnePlus has started promoting the OnePlus 12's IP65 rating which is a slight improvement over the IP64 rating of the previous model.

IP65 means that the OnePlus 12 has the highest level of protection from dust (that is what the "6" rating means) and can withstand low-pressure water jets from all directions. We expect the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra to carry an IP68 rating which would make it impervious to dust and able to be submerged in up to 1.5 meters of fresh water (nearly 5 feet) for up to 30 minutes.

IP65 means that the OnePlus

While the OnePlus 12 won't match the same level of water protection that the Samsung Galaxy 24 Ultra will have, the important thing for phone buyers to understand is that water damage still won't be covered by the warranty on any phone. As a result, no one should be using their phones in the swimming pool or in the shower (the hot steam is not good for the device). So if you like the OnePlus 12 more than the Galaxy S24 Ultra, that's the phone that you should buy next year; don't base your phone buying decisions on a handset's IP rating.

OnePlus is also promoting

OnePlus is also promoting the USB 3.2 Gen 1 charging port for the phone. Like other flagships with it, with the right cable, this will allow fast data transfers up to 10Gbps. Once again, we must repeat that the OnePlus 12 will be as packed as any Android flagship including Samsung's top-of-the-line flagship.

Apple's latest iPhone 15 ad promotes a couple of new, nifty camera features

On any iPhone 15 model, users can convert a picture of a person, a dog, or a cat into a portrait after the picture has been processed. That's pretty cool. And to make this feature even better, you can shift the focus on any of the subjects of the photo. Again, this is available only on the iPhone 15, the iPhone 15 Plus, the iPhone 15 Pro, and the iPhone 15 Pro Max. To convert such a photo into a portrait, follow these directions:

Open the Photos app on your iPhone.

  • Tap any photo taken in Photo mode to view it in full screen, then tap Edit.
  • If portrait effects are available, tap the Depth Adjustment button, then tap Portrait at the top of the screen.
  • Use the Depth Control slider to increase or decrease the level of background blur in the portrait.
  • Tap Done.
  • To undo the portrait effects, open the photo, tap Edit, then tap Revert.

It should be noted that if you do this with a Live Photo, the Live Photo effects are not available. To shift the focus on any of the photo's subjects, follow these directions:

  • Open the Photos app on your iPhone.
  • Tap any portrait to view it in full screen, then tap Edit.
  • Tap a new subject or focus point in the photo.
  • Tap Done.

In a new promotional video from Apple called "Album Cover," Apple shows how these features work. A female member of a musical trio is using her iPhone to turn a picture of the three into a portrait for the next album cover. When she presses the Portrait button, she remains in focus while the other two members of the group are blurred in the background. Showing one of her bandmates the picture, she asks what he thinks of the image for the group's next album cover.

While he says he likes it, he wants to make one little change and when the phone is returned to its owner, we see that the guitarist has put himself back in focus and put both his bandmates out of focus. A little bit of gaslighting is called for here, and the woman says to the guitar player, "Ok, I just feel like I see you more when I see you less."

The two go back and forth quickly changing the focus of the photo between them. She feels that she should be the one in focus since the album is about her recent breakup. "With me," says the guitar player. To break the tie, they decide to ask Brian, the third member of the band, to decide which version of the portrait is better. But Brian chooses a picture with him in focus and the other two blurred. "Feels iconic," he says.

No, this is not Apple's best ad, promotional video, or whatever it turns out to be. But it does show off the new features in a way that is easy to understand. If this is an ad, a heavily edited version might be seen during this weekend's NCAA hoops and football games, NBA and NHL games, and Sunday's NFL battles.

The Galaxy S24 Ultra's S Pen has been spotted at the FCC

Samsung killing off its Note series was a great idea as it helped consolidate the company's lineup of phones into a neat little bundle. Now users won't have to decide which phone to get as the Galaxy S Ultra series will now offer the best specs while also featuring support for the S Pen.

That is expected to continue in 2024 with the upcoming Galaxy S24 series, and now thanks to a report from MySmartPrice, it looks like the S Pen that is expected to accompany the Galaxy S24 Ultra has been spotted at the FCC with the EJ-PS928 model number.

In terms of the design, it doesn't look like anything has changed as it still looks pretty much like its predecessor. The physical button is still very much present, and according to the FCC listing it looks like it will have a 2402-2480MHz frequency range along with BLE support, which is honestly not too surprising.

While the sighting of the S Pen doesn't reveal any surprises, it does suggest that the launch of the phone could be close at hand. Samsung has been rumored to announce their new Galaxy S24 phones in the middle of January 2024 shortly after CES, so we only have a little over a month before we get all the official details.

Microsoft wants to challenge Apple and Google with its own mobile gaming store

Apple and Google are currently dominating the smartphone space, especially Google where their own app store is on pretty much nearly every Android device out there in the market today. This is a huge deal because all purchases made will see a portion of that money go to Google in commission fees.

Given the popularity of some mobile games and the millions of dollars that can be made through in-app purchases, it's not surprising that Microsoft now wants in on the action. Phil Spencer, Microsoft's head of the Xbox division, has confirmed that the company is in talks with various partners about the launch of a mobile game store.

Microsoft currently has their own storefront for Windows apps, but a mobile game store could be a great alternative for developers of mobile games who might not want to pay the commission that Apple and Google takes. Presumably Microsoft could be offering a lower cut compared to Apple and Google otherwise it's hard to imagine why developers would go with them instead of using Apple or Google's native app stores.

That being said, there are definitely challenges that lie ahead for Microsoft. Firstly, they would need to convince customers to download or use a separate app store for games, especially if users prefer to consolidate all their apps. Secondly, there could be an issue with Apple, who at the moment still does not allow third-party app stores on its iOS platform.

The EU does have a law that is coming into effect that would effectively force Apple to open up its ecosystem, but Apple is fighting it and it remains to be seen how that will turn out.

Samsung might have confirmed that they are working on a new chipset

Samsung's Exynos chipsets have been getting a bad rep over the years to the point where this year's Galaxy S23 ditched the Exynos chipsets entirely and went with Qualcomm. That will change next year where the Galaxy S24 series is expected to see the return of the Exynos chipsets.

Recently, there have been rumors that Samsung will be rebranding its Exynos chipsets to the "Dream Chip". It turns out those rumors were false, but it also turns out that the "Dream Chip" is real. Samsung has since officially denied the rumors in a statement to Android Authority, claiming that the rebranding rumors are not true.

They also revealed that the "Dream Chip" brand name is actually referring to an internal project name. This is interesting because previously, there have been rumors suggesting that Samsung could actually be developing chipsets specifically for their Galaxy flagship phones, similar to how Apple has its A-series of chipsets for its iPhones, and Google has its Tensor chipsets.

This statement from Samsung seemingly confirms the existence of the project, but what exactly it entails is anyone's guess. More importantly, there's no way of knowing if this project will be commercialized either. Also just to play devil's advocate, this "Dream Chip" project could refer to something else entirely and not necessarily be related to mobile.

Many companies do work on internal projects as part of R&D that never see the light of day, so until we hear otherwise, don't get your hopes up just yet!

It looks like Apple will have to continue relying on Qualcomm for a while

As it stands, many companies rely heavily on Qualcomm for a lot of their components for their smartphones and tablets. The most obvious would be the chipset that powers our phones, then there is also the GPU, and also the modem.

Now, Apple was reported to be trying to build its own 5G modem in a bid to reduce their reliance on Qualcomm, but that effort seems to have failed as there are multiple reports claiming that Apple is apparently calling it quits on their custom 5G modem development. This is according to a post by "yeux1122" on Naver, as well as a post on X by @Tech_Reve.

While none of this has been confirmed, it does lineup with earlier reports in which it was suggested that Apple was running into various issues and hurdles during the development process. It seems that whatever prototypes Apple developed were far behind whatever was already commercially available, not to mention there were issues with the Intel code Apple had inherited when they bought over Intel's smartphone modem business.

It is unclear if Apple will attempt to pick this up again later on. The company is notorious for trying to do everything in-house where possible, and while they've had quite a bit of success with that, it looks like this 5G modem will have to be chalked up as a loss, at least for now.

Google Says that the Screen Bumps on your Pixel 8 Display are Fine

A while back, a growing number of Pixel 8 owners noted that their devices' screens seem to have formed tiny bumps and ripples, which are most visible whenever the display is turned off and viewed under a direct bright light. Some have even complained that the bumps were present from the moment their phone was unboxed, leading to concerns over durability and performance.

With that being said, it seems that Google has noticed the complaints online, and has since issued a corresponding statement regarding the mysterious screen bumps, which have since been clarified as components pressing up against the display. According to a statement made to 9to5Google:

"Pixel 8 phones have a new display. When the screen is turned off, not in use and in specific lighting conditions, some users may see impressions from components in the device that look like small bumps. There is no functional impact to Pixel 8 performance or durability."

While this does bring some peace of mind at the moment, it still remains to be seen whether or not the screen bumps will affect performance and user experience over the next few months, since the Pixel 8 series handsets are still fairly "new" on the market.

The Pixel 8 series phones feature Google's newly-branded "Actua" displays, which (screen bumps aside) have gained favourable benchmark scores in terms of display quality and power efficiency.

Redmi's Upcoming Phone will Come with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2

While a lot of smartphone manufacturers are working on incorporating the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip in their new and upcoming phones, that's not necessarily the case with Redmi's upcoming K70 handset, which is scheduled to launch tomorrow in China.

More specifically, it's expected that the Redmi K70 will feature last year's Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 - while it is technically an "older" chip, the 8 Gen 2 has got to be one of the more well-received Qualcomm chips in recent times, thanks to impressive performance and power efficiency. The information was initially shared via Chinese social media site Weibo.

Redmi's Upcoming Phone will Come with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2

With that being said, it's not exactly surprising to see Xiaomi use older chips on newer devices, given the brand's push for budget-friendly devices which don't necessarily lose out on performance. Other details of the Redmi K70 include two color variants which are available in purple and blue, as well as a 1220p resolution display with up to a whopping 4,000 nits of peak brightness.

Redmi fans will have to tune into tomorrow's K70 launch event, which will be held online and will also showcase the spec'd out Redmi K70 Pro variant.

How Mobile Technology Affected the Way We Use Our Phones

Something needs to be said about the development of mobile technology. From the humble rotary dial to payphones, the evolution of communication would be unthinkable then if not for mobile technology. For a long while, only our voices were the only information that would go through Alexander Graham Bell's famous invention.

And it has exponentially made the world faster and bigger, events unfold at the palm of your hand as it happens. Wide coverages are at the ready on every social media channel available, all of which can be accessed by the press of a button. No one could have predicted the convenience that this development has brought to the everyday telephone decades ago!

Naturally, this has led to different opportunities for all kinds of industries which would utilize this impeccable convenience. Its development gave an immense growth to all kinds of ideas that helped revolutionize from almost every service and business. From government offices to business conglomerates, phone technology today creates bridges for information out of thin air to ensure seamless communication anywhere in the world.

Mobile technology for phones in emergency services and responses

One of the best uses for mobile technology for phones, which it will definitely always be thankful for, is for emergency responses. It could be unimaginable not to integrate mobile technology for phones, especially when it comes to disaster responses.

From its workers to the people it has serviced, search and rescue operations owe endless gratitude to people who have devoted themselves to developing mobile technology. Responses, calls, notifications all arrive at an instant from almost anywhere because of mobile phones. Locations are also easily identified through radio detection from these portable devices.

Apart from the evident communication advantages, emergency services have also used mobile technology to its fullest by pinpointing location devices. Tracking becomes much easier, faster and more accurate when it comes to pinpointing locations. The presence of such an invaluable technology despite its size could potentially decide whether a person would be lost and found, maybe even life and death!

An exemplary instance where mobile technology has been an immense boon when going through emergency responses is the development of autonomous search drones. These drones can be notified through apps on phones to ask for help whenever there is an emergency. Data from these apps will help drones track with efficiency and cadence that would not have been present many years ago.

High-end entertainment on the go

Mobile devices have seemingly overtaken the traditional entertainment mediums which were thought to be untouchable many years ago. Today, the shows that you needed to tune your TV to can also be searched in a matter of minutes. Whether it's uploaded on YouTube, various internet archives, or your favorite streaming platforms like Netflix, Disney, Amazon Prime, Peacock, or Max, entire libraries of shows can be accessed at the click of a button.

This remarkable technology makes use of cloud storage devices and services can cast these immense media libraries through smart devices, which also includes your phones! So say if you want to catch up with famous series without buying a TV guide, you can watch these on demand by subscribing on these platforms. Download these shows on your phone, so you can watch Game of Thrones or even The Simpsons while you're on the commute to the subway or during lunch at work.

Another industry that mobile technology helped spring up to the stratosphere are video games. During the industry's early years, gaming consoles cost a fortune! They also took up a lot of space while running only small processes of code. Fast forward decades later, more powerful and advanced games can be played with your fingertips! These are more competitive and definitely more immersive games, especially compared to the games of old.

Speaking of games, you don't need to rush to Sin City if you're feeling lucky. Finding online casinos is significantly easier this time around. You can enjoy slots, blackjack, keno, craps and more games all at the palm of your hand, and it's all thanks to mobile technology applied for phones. Depositing to play these games on these websites is much easier too. Just press and swipe on your smart screens!

Unleash creativity everywhere

Ever since phones became smart devices, cameras have also become a part of mobile phones. In fact, you might not find a phone that wouldn't have a camera! Download a few apps for editing so you can find and experiment in comfort while snapping photos anywhere you are.

Enjoying music has also immensely benefited from developments from phone mobile technology. Apart from streaming services like Spotfiy and Apple Music, there are a few apps that would also help users produce their own music. You don't need instruments to create sonic creativity, or an extensive console to edit your masters.

As you can see, the technology used in mobile phones has opened a lot of possibilities towards a faster and connected future. While we can enjoy the benefits of these developments today, the future holds even more creative possibilities, doesn't it?

Under Pressure: Vivo'x X100 Throttles just After 2 Minutes in Performance Test

A while back, Vivo announced the arrival of its new flagship phone, the Vivo X100. The handset carries the highly-anticipated Dimensity 9300 chipset, MediaTek's new premium mobile SoC and a major competitor to rival chips such as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.

With that in mind, while the chipset holds a lot of promise, it seems that early testing with the X100 has yielded some rather concerning results, especially for fans looking forward to getting their hands on the 9300. It's reported that recent testing with the X100 (and subsequently the Dimensity 9300) resulted in the X100's vapor chamber - which is essentially its cooling system - to fold in just around two minutes, with the Dimensity 9300 losing up to 46% of its performance.

This drop in performance is attributed to the 9300's architecture, which does not include efficiency cores. Instead, the chipset features four high-performance cores, which is one of its biggest differences in comparison with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. As a result, even the X100's cooling solution wasn't able to keep up with the tremendous draw in power that the 9300 exhibited, a shown in the CPU stress test.

Given all this, it should be interesting to see how the Dimensity 9300 fares in the long run, as more testing and more market-ready products arrive in the coming months.

Realme Celebrates Milestone with 200 Million Shipments

Realme's debut on the smartphone scene a few years ago yielded some of the most affordable but worthwhile Android smartphones, which managed to balance both specs and performance at wallet-friendly prices. With that in mind, the brand recently celebrated a major milestone after reaching a whopping 200 million unit shipments.

The landmark number was posted online by Realme CEO Sky Li on his official social media account. The post reads:

Realme originally arrived on the market as a sub-brand of Oppo, but has since grown to be its own brand, competing with the likes of Redmi and other budget-focused brands, although it has come out with some rather impressive devices in recent years such as the Realme GT5, which packs 24GB of RAM.

Other features of the GT5 include a variant that features 150W fast-charging speed, available in 12/256GB and 16/512GB storage configurations, although there's a much faster 240W fast-charging variant, which features 24GB of RAM and 1TB of internal storage, and a 4600 mAh battery.

With all that being said, the popularity of budget-friendly Android devices in Asian markets has no doubt helped boost Realme to the mainstream, and it's a bot of a shame that most Western markets aren't able to access the brand's impressive lineup of devices.

Samsung's Galaxy A15 5G could be one of the most affordable OLED phones you can buy

As much as display technology has advanced, OLED screens are still more expensive compared to their LCD counterparts. This is why when it comes to budget phones, it's not surprising that many of them still rely on LCD to help keep costs down.

If you're looking for a cheap smartphone, then perhaps Samsung's upcoming Galaxy A15 5G could be a phone to look out for. The handset hasn't been officially announced, but a listing on Walmart's website has revealed its existence and some of its specs, including the use of an OLED display.

Why is this a big deal? According to the list price, the handset will be sold for $139, which is insanely affordable especially when you consider its OLED display. This would make the Galaxy A15 5G one of the cheapest OLED smartphones around. Other specs include a MediaTek chipset, a 50MP main camera, and a 5,000mAh battery.

With budget phones, there's really nothing to shout about, but at this price and with its OLED display, it could be a great option for those shopping on a budget and want a phone that gives them the best value for money. We'll be keeping an eye out for the official announcement so be sure to check back with us again later for updates.

OnePlus 12 design revealed ahead of announcement

OnePlus will be officially announcing the OnePlus 12 at an event on the 5th of December, 2023. This is according to a post on the company's Weibo page in which they also revealed the design of the upcoming phone.

At first glance, the OnePlus 12 doesn't look too different from its predecessor, the OnePlus 11. There are some minor revisions and changes, which includes moving the Alert Slider to the left of the phone along an integrated antenna, which according to OnePlus will help improve the gaming experience (presumably through a better connection).

OnePlus 12 design revealed ahead of announcement

The renders of the phone also suggest that the OnePlus 12 could feature a textured back, but other than that, it looks pretty much like the OnePlus 11 with the Hasselblad branding on its camera module. For those who own the OnePlus 11 or even OnePlus 10, we're not sure if it might be worth upgrading to the OnePlus 12.

OnePlus 12 design revealed ahead of announcement

So far based on the specs the main upgrade here will be on the chipset, where it will utilize the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. It will also come with a newer and brighter display courtesy of OnePlus' partnership with BOE, but otherwise there's really nothing particularly outstanding on paper.

Apple tipped to release the largest iPad Pro tablet ever in 2024 topping the 12.9-inch model

Not all tipsters are right every time they post on "X," Weibo, or whichever platform they use. Take tipster Majin Bu, whose tips and leaks we've passed along from time to time. A few days ago he posted a tweet (via AppleInsider) that included some information about the upcoming iPad Pro line that he says he was told about.

The tweet says that we could see three iPad Pro models next year with two of them equipped with OLED panels. The 11-inch and 12.9-inch models will be the first iPads ever to sport an OLED display. This part of the tip seems legit as it is a rumor that has been around for some time. But Majin Bu says that he was also told about a third model that will feature a 14.1-inch mini-LED display.

A mini-LED display iPad Pro screen offers many of the same features that an OLED iPad Pro screen does

The mini-LED backlighting allows a display to be as close to OLED as possible without the expense. With mini-LED, the display is brighter and the contrast ratio can be as high as 1,000,000:1. These screens also show deeper blacks and there is no risk of screen burn-in as there is with OLED. The current 12.9-inch iPad Pro sports a mini-LED screen.

On the other hand, the tipster might not be way off on the possibility of a third iPad Pro with a 14.1-inch micro-LED screen. In 2022, according to the highly accurate co-founder and CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) Ross Young, Apple was working on a 14.1-inch iPad Pro model for 2023 although there have been no new iPad models this year and such a tablet could easily have been pushed back to 2024.

All three new iPad Pro models for 2024 will be powered by the new powerful and energy-efficient M3 SoC

Majin Bu also said in his tweet that all three iPad Pro models will be powered by the powerful and new M3 chip with 8GB RAM. The displays will each deliver up to 3000 nits of brightness and the tablets will support a new Apple Pencil with interchangeable magnetic tips (for drawing, technical drawing, and painting). He also expects Apple to introduce a new aluminum Magic Keyboard for the top-of-the-line tablets with two USB-C ports and somehow MagSafe would be used to connect to the tablets instead of using a Smart Connector.

Additionally, there would be a "software only" Dynamic Island on the new iPad Pro (2024) tablets. The latter isn't needed to hide the True-Depth Camera on the iPad Pro as it is on the iPhone. In his tweet, the tipster is already covering his tracks by writing, "I'm not sure of the source so I can't take this information too seriously but I think it's okay to report it anyway." Right now the Dynamic Island can be found only on the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

This year is the first time in the history of the iPad that Apple did not introduce new or refreshed versions of the tablets which means we should expect to see Apple make up for lost time next year.

The iPad Pro, according to TF International analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, will start mass production late in the first quarter or during the second quarter of 2024. Majin Bu does say to expect thinner bezels on all three iPad Pro (2024) models.

Google's unparalleled Pixel Tablet will be a very soft hit on your wallet at new lower price

Google has proved to be a disruptive company in the mobile space, doing things differently than most other companies. The strategy has proven to be successful, giving consumers the option of buying phones that feel unique. The same philosophy has been applied to the first Pixel tablet and it's on sale right now.

Many things we buy end up rotting in our drawers and this can end up happening with all top tablets of the year except the Pixel Tablet. That's because the Pixel Tablet is not just a tablet, it's a dockable device that can serve you round the clock. Talk about getting your money's worth!

The Pixel Tablet has a 10.95-inch screen and it's powered by the premium in-house Tensor G2 chip. Not only is it snappy, but it also brings some of the tricks that Pixel phones are famous for to the slate, such as Magic Eraser and smooth dictation.

When you are done using it, you can plop it on the charging speaker dock. The dock will keep the slate charged, so it'll always be juiced up for you to use. And that's not all.

The dock acts as a stand for the device, allowing you to use it as a smart display. You can play podcasts on it while you are in the kitchen, make it display the clock, set timers on it, or use it to control smart devices.

Unlike the iPad, this is a shareable device, so all your family members can have their own accounts on it.

The 128GB Pixel Tablet and the complimentary charging dock costs $499 and currently, it's $100 off on Amazon. For comparison, the 64GB iPad Air costs $599 and the base Galaxy Tab S9 retails for $799.

If you want a snappy tablet that's not as expensive as comparable slates from other well-known companies and don't want a device that will only collect dust, grab the Pixel Tablet before the deal expires.

Honor 100 series premiers Qualcomm's Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 chipset

While Black Friday is about to start in the United States, the Chinese customers had a very busy day, as at least three handset manufacturers introduced new products today: Oppo, ZTE, and honor.

Unlike Reno11 and Red Magic 9 Pro, honor 100 is a mid-range smartphone that premiers Qualcomm's Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 processor. On top of that, both the basic honor 100 and the improved model, honor 100 pro, come equipped with a custom-made RF chip C1 that promises better calls even in areas with weak signal reception.

The vanilla honor 100 sports a large 6.7-inch OLED display that features an under-display fingerprint sensor and houses a big 50-megapixel selfie snapper. On the back, the mid-range phone packs a dual-camera that includes a 50-megapixel Sony IMX906 sensor with OIS (optical image stabilization) and a 12-megapixel ultrawide camera.

The phone is powered by a massive 5,000 mAh battery and ships with MagicOS 7.2 based on Android 13 right out of the box. The phone is now available for purchase in China in four different colors - black, blue, purple, and white, for just $350 (12/256GB model).

Honor 100 series premiers Qualcomm's Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 chipset

On the other hand, the honor 100 pro is the company's new flagship. Equipped with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor coupled with 12/256GB or 16/1TB storage, the honor 100 pro is a real beast when it comes to performance.

Honor's new flagship comes with a 6.78-inch OLED display and a triple camera setup: 50-megapixel main sensor, 12-megapixel ultrawide camera, 32-megapixel telephoto shooter.

Just like the basic model, the honor 100 pro is powered by a large 5,000 mAh battery that features 100W fast charging support, as well as 66W wireless charging support.

Honor is now selling the 100 Pro in China for $480 for the 12/256GB model or $620 for the 16/1TB variant. The phone is available in four different colors: black, blue, purple, and white.

Oppo's new Pad Air2 tablet is a rebranded OnePlus Pad Go

Oppo only briefly showcased the Pad Air2 tablet during its recent event in China, which focused on the company's new flagships, the Reno11 and Reno11 Pro. Even though not much information about the tablet was revealed at the said event, the tablet's official page provides a lot of details, including technical specifications, price and availability.

As the title says, Oppo's new Pad Air2 tablet seems to be a rebranded OnePlus Pad Go, specifically designed for the Chinese market. The tablet will hit the shelves over the weekend, but it's now available for preorder for as low as $180 and as high as $240.

The tablet sports a large 11.4-inch LCD display with 2408 x 1720 pixels resolution and 90Hz refresh rate. This affordable Android slate is powered by a large 8,000 mAh battery with 33W fast charging support.

Also, Oppo's tablet comes with Dolby Atmos sound, coupled with four speakers. The Pad Air2 is a Wi-Fi-only affair, so there's no cellular connectivity available on this particular tablet.

The tablet packs different amounts of memory: 6/128GB, 8/128GB, and 8/256GB. If this is truly just a rebranded OnePlus Pad Go, then we expect Oppo's new tablet to be equipped with a MediaTek Helio G99 chipset (or something similar).

Of course, the Pad Air2 features stylus support, as well as an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera and another 8-megapixel shooter in the front. According to Oppo, the Pad Air2 ships with ColorOS 13, which is based on Android 13.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 Android 14 update arrives in the US

It's a good time to be a Samsung customer, as the South Korean giant is now rolling out Android 14 to multiple devices. Samsung Galaxy S22 and S23 series are already in the process of receiving the long-awaited update, as well as several of the company's tablets and Galaxy A series phones.

As the title says, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is the next Samsung smartphone to receive the Android 14 One UI 6 update. Granted, the software upgrade is only available for customers in the United States, it's safe to say that Samsung will expand the roll-out to additional countries in the coming weeks.

For now, you can only update to Android 14 if you own a carrier-locked version of Galaxy Z Flip 5, specifically the Verizon-bound model, according to SamMobile. The update comes with firmware number F731USQU1BWK9, just so you know what you should be looking for.

It's also important to mention that this is a pretty big update weighing in at 3GB, although that shouldn't be an issue considering the amount of storage the Galaxy Z Flip 5 packs inside.

The Galaxy Z Flip 5Android 14 update includes the November 2023 security patch, so if you're a Verizon customer who owns Samsung's flagship foldable smartphone, there's a high chance that you'll be able to upgrade your phone to One UI 6 by heading to Settings / Software update / Download and install.

Apple explores two new screen technology solutions to shield your iPhone from prying eyes

Ever wished for a bit more privacy while using your smartphone? Yes? Well, Apple seems to be working on making that happen with some innovative screen technology. Recent report from Apple Insider reveals two granted patents shedding light on the tech giant's efforts to enhance iPhone screen privacy.

The two options that Apple is researching are using a privacy film layer over the screen and displays with adjustable angles of view.

The first patent, "Privacy films for curved displays," explores the possibility of adding a privacy film layer to the screen. This film acts like a polarizing filter, allowing light to emit in only one direction. When viewed from the right spot, users experience full brightness and the quality of the retina display.

While similar film layers exist in the market, and you can add one to your smartphone display, they prove to be somewhat limited as visibility is restricted to a single point. This can pose challenges not only for onlookers but also for the device user.

While anyone trying to view the screen from an angle will see a blurry or completely obscured image, this film layer does not provide complete privacy, as anyone standing directly behind the user will still be able to see the screen.

Moving on to the second patent, "Displays with adjustable angles of view," Apple takes a subtler approach by proposing alterations to the viewing angle of the display.

According to the patent, in a private viewing mode, the control circuitry applies a current to electrodes, causing the electrochromic material to become more opaque, thereby limiting the display's angle of view. Essentially, this patent introduces an "electrically controllable filter" within the display, giving users control over screen polarization.

Unlike the first approach with an external film layer, this second method integrates privacy features directly into the display itself. The display, comprising a series of substrate layers, could include an additional layer of liquid crystal. This liquid crystal element might incorporate a color filter, enabling users to limit certain colored images to their eyes only.

These patents hint at Apple's ongoing efforts to enhance user privacy without compromising display quality. As technology continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how these innovations shape the future of smartphone displays.

Revive Your Email Experience: Apple Mail App Troubleshooting

Emails serve as vital links in the massive digital network that links people, companies, and ideas. When these connections go down, however, for technical reasons like Mail app not working, it may be quite annoying. Even more so if you're using Apple's Mail program, which is well-liked for its intuitive layout and trustworthy functions. But have no fear! The most frequent problems with email may be fixed by following this detailed tutorial.

Don't Put All Your Eggs in One Basket: Diversifying Email Practices

The aphorism serves as a caution against putting all of one's eggs in one basket. Since emails play such an important role in our daily lives, it's important to make sure they're both secure and easy to access.

Backing Up Emails

There is always the chance that something will go wrong or that data will be lost, no matter how stable the platform is. Emails may be protected against loss or corruption by regularly backing them up to iCloud or external storage.

Exploring Alternatives

While Apple Mail is a fine email client, it is also beneficial to become familiar with other options. Outlook and Thunderbird both have alternative user interfaces and sets of capabilities that may be more suited to your requirements.

A Stitch in Time Saves Nine: Addressing Common Apple Mail Glitches Early On

Like a little tear in cloth may lead to a large hole, unresolved issues can grow into much larger ones if left unchecked.

  • Syncing Issues: Make sure every device is connected to the internet if your emails aren't synchronizing. Make sure the Mail option is enabled in iCloud settings.
  • Missing Emails: If your inbox seems to have vanished without a trace, check your spam or trash folder. The problem can be avoided in the future by modifying the spam filter settings.
  • Performance Lag: A full inbox may cause the program to sluggishly respond. Maintaining a regular routine of archiving or removing unnecessary emails can have a positive effect on productivity.

When the Going Gets Tough, the Tough Get Going: Tackling Complex Issues

For those times when basic troubleshooting doesn't cut it, let's dive deep.

Rebuilding the Mailbox

You might think of it as a clean slate for your mailbox. Select the mailbox you wish to rebuild in Apple Mail, go to the "Mailbox" menu, and then choose "Rebuild." Keep in mind that this process might take some time.

Resolving SMTP Server Issues

The problem may not always be with getting emails, but with sending them. If that's the case, check your SMTP (mail server's outgoing settings). Verify that you typed in the right server address, user name, and password.

Fixing Corrupted Databases

If your Apple Mail database becomes compromised, mayhem can ensue. Take care of this by opening Finder on your Mac, going to the Library folder, opening the Mail folder, and erasing the envelope files. These files will be recreated when you restart Apple Mail.

A Breath of Fresh Air: Refreshing and Reinstalling Apple Mail

Reinstalling your email software is a last option, but it may be essential. If Apple Mail still doesn't work after upgrading, deleting cache, and sorting emails, attempt a clean reinstallation. Crashing, unresponsiveness, and damaged settings may need this step. Before reinstalling, back up essential emails and settings to avoid data loss.

Step-by-Step Guide to Cleanly Reinstalling Apple Mail

If you've decided that reinstalling Apple Mail is the best option, do it the right way by following a detailed tutorial. To get started, uninstall the existing program and delete all of its leftover files and configurations. Then, update Apple Mail to the latest version available on the App Store.

Setting Up from Scratch for a Smoother Email Experience

To use Apple Mail for the first time, perform a clean installation of OS X. It is imperative that you configure your email accounts, filters, and other options. Resetting to factory settings might help eliminate any remaining conflicts or issues from the previous configuration. Your email correspondence will be more error-free and fluid once you're done.

An Apple a Day Keeps the Doctor Away: Keeping Your Mail App in Top Shape

Taking several simple measures might have a significant effect on the stability and performance of your email client. Please use the following principles to make the most of your email communications:

  • Updating the App: Like your device's operating system, email clients receive updates that correct bugs and increase security. If you want to take advantage of the newest features and bug fixes, you should regularly check your app store for updates and install them as soon as possible.
  • Clearing Cache and Redundant Files: Over time, your email client will become increasingly sluggish as cache and unnecessary files accumulate. You can keep your app running smoothly and clear up space on your smartphone by regularly removing these files. Most email applications provide delete capabilities for past emails and attachments.
  • Organizing Emails and Decluttering: Having a large number of messages in your inbox might make it difficult to locate certain messages. Sort your email into folders, label them, and get rid of any spam or junk mail that has found its way in. To prevent your inbox from becoming overly full, it is recommended that you delete old emails on a regular basis.

By regularly doing these easy procedures, you can keep your email client in peak condition, avoiding any interruptions in your inbox management.

Not All Heroes Wear Capes: Seeking External Help

It's OK to ask for help once in a while when dealing with a problem that won't go away. The Genius Bar, together with Apple's online forums and helplines, is a goldmine of knowledge and support. Software like MailSteward and Emailchemy can aid in the management and repair of email archives and should be taken into consideration.

Frequently asked questions and solutions to problems with Apple Mail may be found on websites like MacRumors and Apple Stack Exchange. Leveraging the knowledge of several people may be really helpful.

The Apple Mail app is a powerful tool, but it does have its limitations. However, if you are well-informed and take preventative measures, you may guarantee a pleasant and trouble-free email experience for yourself and your contacts. Keep in mind that there's a bright side to every cloud (or iCloud, in this case!).

Some Pixel 8 Pro displays are warping

It appears that the Pixel 8 Pro smartphones might have a display problem. According to posts on Reddit and the Google Support forums, some Pixel 8 Pro smartphone owners are noticing some warping on their displays.

These warpings come in the form of bumps and indentations that have suddenly shown up. While for the most part these bumps don't appear to be too obvious, there are concerns that it might get worse over time.

Some Pixel 8 Pro displays are warping

As 9to5Google points out, teardowns of the phone in the past have revealed some components under the display that could have caused those bumps and indentations, where the components could be pressing against the OLED panel. Users are claiming that for now, there is no impact on the touch functionality or image quality of the screen, but obviously this is not a good sign.

Luckily for some users, they have managed to get a replacement phone from Google, although we have to wonder how widespread this issue is and if Google might need to launch an exchange program. It is unclear why this is only happening now, but perhaps some of these phones were put into tight pockets or were accidentally sat upon, causing the components to pierce the display panel.

OPPO Find X7 Pro could be the ultimate zoom camera

A lot of smartphone makers market the telephoto lenses on their phones in a kind of ridiculous manner, like being able to take a photo of the moon. It's impressive, no doubt, but how often would we need to take such photos?

Zoom lenses are probably one of the more underrated lenses on smartphones, and if you're a fan of telephoto lenses, then the upcoming Oppo Find X7 Pro could be a phone to keep an eye out for. This is because a post on Weibo by Digital Chat Station has revealed that the handset could launch with dual telephoto lenses.

According to the rumor, the Find X7 Pro's main camera will be a 50MP Sony LYT-900 1-inch sensor, and it will be accompanied by a 50MP 2.7x optical zoom lens that uses Sony's 1/1.56-inch IMX890 sensor and a 50MP 6x optical zoom lens that uses the Sony 1/2.4-inch IMX858 sensor. Lastly, there will be a fourth lens in the form of a 50MP ultrawide.

Nothing Chats removed from Play Store over security concerns

Last week, Nothing announced Nothing Chats. This is a new messaging app by the company that would solve the green-bubble-blue-bubble issue by allowing iMessage users to send rich text messages to Android users.

Unfortunately, it looks like the app has since been pulled from the Play Store over certain security and privacy concerns.

When the app was launched, while the concept seemed like a good one, many were quick to point out the potential security issues involved. It was later discovered that the app isn't really end-to-end encrypted as they claimed, and that user data is exposed in plain text which would have allowed attackers to read the data pretty easily.

To be fair, the app was launched in beta and bugs are to be expected, but perhaps Nothing should have done a better job at QC-ing the app before publishing it. Many users are now blasting the company for calling these pretty serious security and privacy flaws as mere "bugs".

That being said, it should be noted that shortly after Nothing's app was launched, Apple themselves came forward and announced that in 2024, they will finally introduce support for RCS, so we're not sure how relevant the Nothing Chats app will remain once that starts rolling out with presumably more attention paid towards the overall security and privacy of the service.

The OnePlus 12 launch date has been confirmed!

The OnePlus 12 will be the company's next flagship phone, and it also seems that it will launch next month. This was confirmed by OnePlus on Weibo in which they revealed that the phone will be announced on the 4th of December, 2023.

This is interesting because OnePlus usually makes flagship announcements at the start of the new year, but we have been hearing rumors that OnePlus plans to launch their next flagship phone before the end of 2023 with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, and it looks like those rumors are true.

The phone was recently spotted on a certification website so we can't say we're too surprised by this announcement. Whether or not this announcement will cover global availability or just China availability remains to be seen. In the meantime, we have been hearing rumors that the OnePlus 12 could come with cameras that takes advantage of Sony's latest CMOS sensors.

OnePlus also recently confirmed a partnership with display maker BOE, where the handset could feature one of the brightest displays we've ever seen on a smartphone. Either way, we'll find out in the next couple of weeks so mark the date down on your calendar and check back with us on the 4th of December for the details.

Google will Soon let You Hide that "At a Glance" Widget on your Pixel

While one of Android's biggest strengths is its flexibility when it comes to personalization and customization, it should be said that there are times when it seems that the OS is fully locked down in certain parts. Take for example the "At a Glance" widget, which is found on Google Pixel phones, which for some reason has been an immovable fixture on Pixel home screens for quite some time now.

Unsurprisingly, this has led to complaints from some users regarding the rigid approach that Google has implemented with the At a Glance widget's existence. With that in mind, it looks like Google has been listening, and users might be able to hide the widget soon after all.

The change was listed by tech writer Mishaal Rahman in a social media post, which lists other new features spotted in Android 14 QPR2 Beta 1. Based on several screenshots, it looks like Google has added a toggle within the Pixel launcher that will allow users to hide At a Glance, and instead use the space for their own widgets or app shortcuts.

With that being said, the entire thread lists several other changes which are very likely to arrive for Android, such as a new privacy indicator dialog, single app casting (as opposed to your entire display), and "quarantined apps" in developer options, to name a few. It's expected that these new features might officially make their debut in the next Pixel feature drop.

Qi2 wireless charging will be launching in time for the holidays

At the start of the year, the Wireless Power Consortium announced their brand new Qi2 wireless charging standard. Despite it having been announced for almost a year, we've yet to see smartphones or accessories that support it, but it looks like the wait is almost over.

The WPC has announced that they have approved the new charging standard and that they expect that it will launch in time for the holidays, meaning that we should be able to look forward to Qi2-certified charging accessories very soon.

If you're learning about Qi2 for the first time and are wondering what is Qi2, it's a new wireless charging standard that relies on magnets. This is similar to Apple's MagSafe, which isn't surprising given that Apple lent their MagSafe tech to help develop the new standard.

While magnetic charging isn't new, the WPC has created a set of guidelines that companies will need to adhere to if they want their devices to be considered Qi2 certified. At the moment the iPhone 15 is a Qi2 compatible smartphone, but there are no accessories that have launched as many accessory makers are still testing their products and waiting for certification.

2024 should usher in more smartphones that support the technology, so if you're an Android user but love the concept of MagSafe, then these accessories and smartphones should be something to look forward to.

Future Samsung OLED panels will be more energy efficient, but it will be a long wait

Battery tech in our smartphones doesn't seem to be getting better. What this means is that the next best thing would be to try and make the other components in our phones more energy efficient.

We've seen that being done to chipsets where they're becoming more energy efficient, but what about displays? That could be something to look forward to in the future in Samsung phones and Samsung made OLEDs. According to a report from The Elec, it seems that Samsung could be considering improving its OLED panels.

This will be accomplished by adding blue phosphorescent materials to help reduce the amount of power it consumes. At the moment, OLED panels have red and green phosphorescent materials which have an internal luminous efficiency of 100%, whereas the blue materials are at 25%, which means that using this new material should in theory reduce overall energy consumption.

Exactly how much more battery gains we're talking about remains to be seen, especially since there are many other factors to consider, but it's still a good thing nonetheless. That being said, don't expect to see these panels anytime soon. The report claims that development does not appear to be going smoothly which means that it might be either 2025 or 2026 where we will see these OLED panels utilizing this new material.

The OneXGPU wants to put an external GPU in your backpack

If you want to play games on your laptop, you need to buy a laptop that has a decent GPU because some games might require more power than what your CPU's integrated graphics can provide.

While there are external GPU solutions, they're all pretty much big and bulky and not ideal when it comes to portability. That's a status quo that One Notebook is hoping to change with the OneXGPU.

This is a new external GPU that the company is marketing as a truly portable solution. From what we can tell based on the images, it looks like it will be small enough to slip into your backpack.

It is powered by the Radeon RX 7600M XT and will feature DC-in ports, DisplayPort and HDMI connections, an Ethernet port, and USB-A and USB-C ports, while also boasting an internal M.2 SSD.

Given its size, it means that it is a more portable solution compared to other external GPUs, so if you really need to game on the move, this could be an option to consider if you don't own a gaming laptop.

At the moment the OneXGPU is in preview on Indiegogo where the company plans to launch a crowdfunding campaign, so other details are a bit foggy for now, but it could be something to keep an eye out for when it does launch.

Nothing Finally has a Solution for the iMessage-RCS Conundrum

As Google continues to pursue Apple to open up inter-platform support between iMessage and RCS messaging, it looks like Nothing has taken the initiative to break down barriers between Android and iOS users with its recent announcement. Company CEO Carl Pei revealed that Nothing has been working on an app that will allow Nothing Phone 2 owners access to iMessage services and features.

More specifically, the app will come in the form of "Nothing Chats," a software feature developed in collaboration with Sunbird and its end-to-end encrypted messaging architecture. With the app, Nothing says that a user's message sent via Nothing Chats will appear as any other iMessage chat, complete with the signature "blue bubble" that so many iMessage users place importance upon.

"Nothing Chats allows for freedom of communication between anyone regardless of their brand of smartphone - which is how it should be," notes Pei. "We want to remind consumers that they do have a choice when it comes to device selection and that their daily behaviors should not be dictated by any one company."

The ongoing quest to develop iMessage and RCS compatibility support is something that Google has been trying at for some time now, given the popularity of Apple's messaging platform across North America. Most recently, Google is reported to be in talks with EU regulators about forcing Apple to integrate RCS messaging.

In terms of availability, Nothing Chats will be up for download on November 17th via the Google Play Store for Nothing Phone 2 owners. There's no word yet on whether or not this service will be available for devices from other OEMs, at least at the moment.

MediaTek's Dimensity 9300 Makes its Debut in Vivo's X100 Series Phones

Following the launch of MediaTek's latest high-powered mobile SoC not too long ago, Vivo finally announced its newest flagship Android phones, the Vivo X100 and X100 Pro. In addition to some impressive hardware components, the phone also marks the first appearance of the Dimensity 9300 in a commercially-available smartphone.

MediaTek's Dimensity 9300 Makes its Debut in Vivo's X100 Series Phones

Aside from the Dimensity 9300 chip inside, the X100 handsets share some similarities, such as curved 6.78-inch AMOLED screens with 1260p resolution and a variable 120Hz refresh rate, and a rather similar design overall, which features a large circular camera module in the rear panel's center, a design element that's common on a lot of smartphones these days.

Both devices also come with Vivo's custom OriginOS, which is based on Android 14 and comes with some Vivo-exclusive apps and third-party software.

MediaTek's Dimensity 9300 Makes its Debut in Vivo's X100 Series Phones

There are some notable differences though - for one, the X100 Pro does feature a triple-camera setup with a 1-inch Sony IMX989 main sensor, as well as a telephoto lens certified by Zeiss APO. Meanwhile, the base model X100 comes with a 50MP IMX920 main sensor, a 64MP 1/2" telephoto sensor, and an ultrawide lens.

As for battery specs, the regular X100 model packs a 5,000 mAh battery with 120W fast charging, while its Pro sibling omes with a slightly larger 5,400 mAh battery with 100W charging support, as well as 50W wireless fast charging. Both phones are currently exclusive for Chinese markets.

Huawei's next OS will drop Android app support

Ever since the US government banned Huawei from doing business with US companies, the company has been trying to find ways to survive. One of those ways included developing their own mobile operating system called HarmonyOS.

The company has since been working on newer versions, such as HarmonyOS Next, which was revealed earlier this year in the summer. Now according to Huawei's Richard Yu, HarmonyOS Next is close to release which is good news, but there is one thing users should note and that is the update will drop support for Android apps.

Prior to this, users who had Huawei phones with HarmonyOS could still download and run Android apps (just not Google's apps), but with HarmonyOS Next, the company is dropping Android libraries support. We kind of get what Huawei is trying to do, which is create their own mobile OS that can stand on its own two feet.

The problem with this move is that by removing Android app support, there might be users who will find it difficult to use their Huawei phones since some of their favorite apps may no longer be available, or a HarmonyOS version hasn't been created yet. This could create issues for the platform's viability as we have seen in the past with other mobile operating systems like Windows Phone.

Without a robust ecosystem, users won't want to adopt it, and developers won't want to develop for it since there aren't that many people using it - it's a vicious cycle. Maybe Huawei's branding and user base is large enough where this won't pose a problem.

The Vivo Watch 3 Finally goes Live with a New Custom OS

The smart wearable market has seen a lot of expansion in the past couple of years, at least in terms of popularity - more and more manufacturers have continued to join the wave of newer and more capable devices, and Vivo's latest entry seeks to do just that. Dubbed the "vivo Watch 3," Vivo's new smartwatch comes with its own set of tricks up its sleeve.

Perhaps one of the biggest features is the operating system that ships inside the watch - the Vivo Watch 3 comes with BlueOS, a custom wearable platform designed by Vivo. It features its own exclusive set of apps and software services, as well as its own app store. There's also "Jovi" assistant on board, Vivo's own smart voice assistant.

The Vivo Watch 3 Finally goes Live with a New Custom OS

In terms of design, the Vivo Watch 3 comes with a round look that's reminiscent of most smart wearables on the market, and it comes with two physical buttons on the side consisting of an action button and a crown-style button for navigation. The watch packs a 500 mAh battery that Vivo says can last up to 16 days, although you'd have to use the watch as a standalone device without Bluetooth connectivity enabled. Otherwise, this endurance goes down to around a week's worth of use.

The device also comes with the usual set of hardware and software features designed to keep an eye on users' health, including SPO2 and heart rate monitoring, sleep tracking, as well as a variety of different exercise modes. The watch is priced at around $150 for the base model which comes with Bluetooth-only connectivity, although there's an e-Sim variant which costs around $200.

As you spin the reels and chase the dream, remember that the odds may be fickle, but fortune favors the fearless. So, go forth, game on and may the codes lead you to pleasure.

Introduced this past January, Qualcomm and Iridium surprised the mobile industry at the end of last week by announcing the end of Snapdragon Satellite without having one Android phone manufacturer sign on the dotted line. Snapdragon Satellite was expected to be used by Android manufacturers as a way to match the iPhone 14 and iPhone 15's Emergency SOS via Satellite feature.

Qualcomm and Iridium end the partnership that resulted in Snapdragon Satellite

Announced last year one day after Huawei unveiled a similar feature for its Mate 50 series, Emergency SOS via Satellite allows someone with a compatible iPhone model to report an emergency even in areas where there is no cellular connectivity. The iPhone screen helps show the user where to position the device to connect with a satellite; information about the emergency is texted to emergency services who dispatch first responders. The feature has already been credited with saving some lives.

Snapdragon Satellite was set to work with Iridum's satellite constellation and both Qualcomm and Iridium have announced the end of their partnership starting on December 3rd. This action effectively ends Snapdragon Satellite, at least for now. In its press release, Iridium notes that the decision to end the partnership is due to one huge factor: no business. As the satellite firm wrote, "The companies successfully developed and demonstrated the technology; however, notwithstanding this technical success, smartphone manufacturers have not included the technology in their devices."

Where this leaves Samsung is unclear. Last month, John Yong-In Park, head of Samsung Electronics SLSI Business Division, said during the 2023 Semiconductor Expo (SEDEX) keynote that 2024 Samsung Galaxy phones will offer satellite connectivity. He did not mention any specific models, but it was believed that the Galaxy S24 line might be Samsung's first phones to offer emergency satellite connectivity.

Last February, chipmaker MediaTek announced its MT6825 chipset that offers satellite connectivity for Android smartphones through Bullitt's Satellite Connect platform. The chipset supports two-way satellite messaging, location sharing, and emergency SOS. Last year, T-Mobile announced that it would team up with Elon Musk's Starlink to cover areas with no cellular coverage with satellite connectivity allowing users to send and receive SMS and MMS messages.

Android manufacturers are expected to turn to standards-based solutions to create a new satellite-to-phone platform

Iridium CEO Iridium Matt Desch, talking about the end of his firm's partnership with Qualcomm, said, "While I'm disappointed that this partnership didn't bear immediate fruit, we believe the direction of the industry is clear toward increased satellite connectivity in consumer devices. Led by Apple today, MNOs and device manufacturers still plan, over time, to provide their customers with expanded coverage and new satellite-based features, and our global coverage and regulatory certainty make us well suited to be a key player in this emerging market. User experience will be critical to their success, and we've proven that we can provide a reliable, global capability to mobile users."

Qualcomm also commented by stating that the lack of Snapdragon Satellite to sign a deal with any Android manufacturers "indicated a preference towards standards-based solutions" to be used to support smartphone-to-satellite connectivity. "We expect to continue to collaborate with Iridium on standards-based solutions while discontinuing efforts on the proprietary solution that was introduced earlier this year," Qualcomm said.

With a standards-based solution, several companies could get together to create the technology to allow Android handsets to offer emergency satellite connectivity.

As we noted earlier in the story, Huawei last year became the first phone manufacturer to offer satellite connectivity for emergencies and beat out Apple by one day. This year, the new Mate 60 line reportedly offers users the opportunity to make satellite calls using the new flagship phones. This could be considered an improvement over the technology used by Apple which is limited to text-based communications.

iPhone 16 Pro prototype is being tested with a hole-punch cutout instead of the Dynamic Island

The iPhone 15 series hasn't been out for two months yet but already we are examining rumors about next year's iPhone 16 series. According to "X" tipster and Dragon Ball Z villainMajin Bu (via Wccftech), Apple is currently testing a prototype version of the Phone 16 Pro with a hole-punch cutout instead of the Dynamic Island. The Dynamic Island debuted last year on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max and is on all four iPhone 15 models this year.

It would seem to be too early to say goodbye to the Dynamic Island. According to Ross Young, the accurate tipster and CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), all four iPhone 16 models will feature the Dynamic Island. The big news next year will be an increase in the size of the displays on the Pro models from 6.1-inch on the iPhone 15 Pro to 6.3-inch on the iPhone 16 Pro. And the iPhone 15 Pro Max's 6.7-inch display will be hiked to 6.9-inch with the iPhone 16 Pro Max.

Young sees big changes for the iPhone 17 in 2025 as that year he expects to see the non-Pro models match the screen sizes of the Pro models. So that year the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro will both have a 6.3-inch display while the iPhone 17 Plus and iPhone 17 Pro Max will each be equipped with a 6.9-inch screen. Young says that the Dynamic Island will still be found on the non-Pro models in 2025 and for the first time on the less expensive phones, the ProMotion 120Hz display will be used.

The iPhone 17 Pro series will have moved on in 2025 to an under-display Face ID module with a hole-punch cutout on the screen similar to what is reportedly being tested on the iPhone 16 Pro right now. As for the Dynamic Island, Young's forecast doesn't show the feature appearing on the iPhone 17 Pro line so we wonder whether Apple is already thinking about letting the Dynamic Island die off.

iPhone 16 Pro prototype is being tested with a hole-punch cutout instead of the Dynamic Island

Considering the excitement that the Dynamic Island generated when it was a surprise introduction during the 2022 iPhone 14 series unveiling, the actual capabilities of the feature are underwhelming although there is still hope that Apple will be adding more functionality for the notch replacement.

In his tweet, Majin Bu points out that Apple has yet to decide exactly whether it will use a hole-punch cutout for next year's iPhone 16 Pro models. He also says that as far as he knows, the Dynamic Island could return on the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. Writing about the hole-punch being tested on the iPhone 16 Pro, the tipster says, "However I only said that they are testing that version but it is very unlikely to be released."

In the modern era of education, where technological innovations are reshaping traditional paradigms, mobile applications have emerged as transformative tools, particularly in the realm of mathematics education. Humane's AI Pin is here to replace our smartphones

While the form factor and design of our phones have evolved over the years, they're still largely similar in concept where they're a device that we hold and interact with in our hands. Humane is here to challenge that notion with the announcement of the AI Pin, a wearable that we clip onto our clothes.

Humane, for those unfamiliar, is a startup led by former Apple employees. The AI Pin is a badge that is worn on our clothes that is reminiscent of a Star Trek communicator. It does not have a screen nor does it have its own app store, meaning that it only does whatever the company thinks it should do.

Humane's AI Pin is here to replace our smartphones

It runs on an operating system called Cosmos which relies heavily on AI to accomplish the desired task, meaning that while there are no apps (at least not in the traditional sense) that users can download to do specific things, it will still be capable of getting the job done. There is a camera that can be used to identify objects around the user, and if users need to see information like their messages, there is a built-in projector that can beam the software's interface onto your hand.

Humane's AI Pin is here to replace our smartphones

This interface can be interacted with through hand and finger gestures which is actually pretty cool if it actually works as advertised. There is also a microphone for users to issue commands and it can also double up as a translator where it can detect a foreign language being spoken and translate it into English.

It's a very interesting approach, but it could be a hard sell. Many of us are used to our phones and how we use them on a daily basis, so it's hard to imagine giving up all of that so suddenly.

Humane is expected to start selling the AI Pin on the 16th of November where it will be priced at $699, but it will also require a cellular connection that will cost $24 per month which also includes access to a bunch of AI tools.

Google Pulls Out Fitbit Services and Products from Several Countries

Google's acquisition of Fitbit a few years back seemed like the perfect scenario for a lot of fans and buyers, especially with Google's dominance in software development and Fitbit's expertise with health-tracking hardware. This partnership eventually resulted in products like the Google Pixel Watch, which is now in its second generation.

However, we're seeing some concerning moves on behalf of Google's part - the company recently announced that it will be withdrawing Fitbit products and services from several countries in the EU. According to Google's official support page:

We are no longer selling Fitbit products in select countries-but don't worry! We will continue to support you and the devices you currently own with software releases, security updates, warranty fulfillment, and access to customer service.

This change lists several countries in the EU which include Croatia, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Poland, Portugal, Romania, and Slovakia. Google adds that auto-renewals of Fitbit Premium memberships purchased in the aforementioned countries will stop effective October 24, 2023.

This move also affects several other countries in the Asia Pacific region, including Hong Kong, Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines, with membership auto-renewals ending on August 11, 2023. As such, this decision from Google has had a lot of users scratching their heads, given that Fitbit's services and products have been available in those markets long before the Google acquisition.

Some have even gone so far as to speculate that Fitbit might end up being another casualty in the Google Graveyard, which most recently added Google Pixel Pass and Stadia to its list of discontinued services and products.

Xiaomi's stance on bootloader unlocking could be bad news for enthusiasts

Unlocking the bootloader on smartphones has been a mixed bag experience as it varies from OEM to OEM. In the past, some have embraced the enthusiast community, while others cite security issues as being the reason to not officially allow the bootloaders of their phones to be unlocked.

Unfortunately for Xiaomi smartphone owners, it seems that the company isn't too keen on allowing the bootloaders of their phones to be unlocked. Speaking to Android Authority, the company confirmed that the bootloader on their phones running HyperOS will be locked by default and that unlocking will be disabled.

This doesn't mean that Xiaomi will disallow the unlocking of the bootloader completely. Instead, users who wish to unlock the bootloader of their Xiaomi phones will need to apply for permission via Xiaomi's community forum. Over in China, it might be even harder because according to MIUI Polska writer Kacper Skrzypek, users in China will need to reach "level five" on the forums, and even then they will have a limit of three unlocked devices per year.

Also, another thing to note is that Xiaomi phones running on MIUI who have their bootloaders unlocked will not receive the update that will upgrade them to HyperOS (which is the new OS Xiaomi introduced in the Xiaomi 14 phones) as long as they remain unlocked.

Here's What You Can Expect from the Nothing OS 2.5 Open Beta 2

As Android 14 continues its descent into different Android brands, we recently got word that Nothing has announced that it was rolling out the Open Beta 2 for Nothing OS 2.5, which is powered by Android 14. This gives users early access to new improvements and enhancements from Open Beta 1.

In terms of new features, Open Beta 2 comes with new Glyph Interface functionality, including progress integration for the Google Calendar app, as well as new functions for the Glyph Timer which now supports time presets, quick access from the lock screen, and tap-to-open for the pop-up window. The Glyph interface can now light up as well whenever the device is used for NFC functionality.

Gesture controls have also gotten new additions, including predictive back gestures for all Nothing apps, more options for the double-press power button gesture, and improved reliability of the three-finger swipe gesture. Nothing does note that since this is beta software, users do run the risk of system instabilities.

Users enrolled in the Beta can update via the Settings app > System > System Update. Users can also sign up by heading on over to nothing.community. Nothing says it will give an update on the full Android 14 rollout to Phone (1) and Phone (2) devices at a later date.

Samsung Galaxy S24's AI features could be locked behind a paywall

When using online services that are free, there is usually an option to pay for a more premium version of that service that comes with additional perks that some users might appreciate. But what if you were to pay for a product, but then be told you had to pay more to use some of its features?

That's what Samsung could be planning to do with its upcoming Galaxy S24 series of phones, where a post on X by @Tech_Reve claims that Samsung is toying with the idea of charging users a subscription fee to use the on-device AI features.

Now, it was previously rumored that AI could be a big new feature of the Galaxy S24 phones. This was supposed to be a good thing as it could finally bring some features that would put it on par with Google's Pixel series of phones, but if this rumor is true, we're not sure if that's such a good idea.

It is unclear why Samsung might want to charge for this. We know that companies like Apple and Google offer subscription services for things like cloud storage, music, and videos, but it's fair because those are additional things that don't necessarily take away from the user experience if users choose not to pay for them.

In this case, if Samsung is going to make a big deal about AI on its Galaxy S24 phones, locking those features behind a paywall just seems outright dumb. Hopefully it's not true, but we'll have to wait and see come January 2024.

Android 14 Finally Arrives for the Sony Xperia 1 V

With Android 14 finally beginning to roll out from different manufacturers, we're bound to see more smartphone models receive the much-awaited system upgrade from Google. More recently, Sony announced that its flagship Xperia 1 V will finally be getting Android 14 via an OTA download.

The update comes with software version number 67.1.A.2.112, in addition to the October 2023 security patch for Android. As per Sony's announcement:

The yearly Android update season is here! The long-awaited Android 14 brings you attractive new features with all kinds of updates and fun. You're going to love it!

Now, with Android 14, if you ever lose a device like your earphones, you can find it using the Find My Device app. Share files and photos between your Xperia device and Windows computer with the new and improved Nearby Share feature. More shortcut customization options have also been added for your lock screen.

And as always, Android keeps the improvements coming on the entertainment front!

As mentioned, Android 14 for the Sony Xperia 1 V comes with enhancements for features such as Nearby Share for Windows, Find My, as well as instant lock screen customization (which works very similar to what we've seen on the Pixel). Sony has also brought over the Video Creator app, which allows users to edit their video clips into more refined content.

HMD Prepares to Move Forward with its Separate Smartphone Brand

A while back, we got word that HMD Global was planning to launch its own line of Android smartphones, a surprising move given that the company is heavily tied to Nokia's mobile business. With that in mind, it looks like the company is getting closer and closer to launching its debut smartphone.

More specifically, diagrams and key details regarding the device - with model numbers TA-1585 and N159V - were spotted via the GSMA IMEI database.

Based on a manual included in the listing, it's also expected that the phone might be designed by HMD Global for M-Kopa, a company based in Africa. Furthermore, the manual shows some branding on the rear panel with the M-Kopa logo, alongside the words "Designed by HMD". Referred to as the "M-Kopa X1" in the manual, it's speculated that the device might be a rebranded variant of the Nokia C32.

With that being said, there's no word on pricing or availability at the moment, although it is interesting to see this move from HMD Global. The company did state that its smartphones will co-exist with Nokia's own devices for the time being.

"Ultra" version of the Xiaomi 14 expected early next year

Xiaomi recently announced the Xiaomi 14 series which consists of the Xiaomi 14 and Xiaomi 14 Pro. But in case you're looking for an even higher-end and more powerful variant, you could be in luck because come early 2024, an Ultra version could be launched.

This is according to a post on Weibo by Digital Chat Station in which they claim that Xiaomi could be working on the Xiaomi 14 Ultra that could debut in the first quarter of 2024. So what will be different about this model compared to the other Xiaomi 14 models? Apparently the display and camera will be some of its most differentiating factors.

The display is said to be slightly curved, similar to phones like the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra where the surface will be flat but it will be ever-so-slightly curved along the edges. Its display is rumored to be 6.67-inches and will have a 144Hz refresh rate, and under the hood the same Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset can be found.

It is also rumored to sport a brand new camera where it will pair the Sony LYT900 sensor together with a Leica Summilux f/f1.42-4.0 lens. Other rumored specs include 12GB of RAM, up to 1TB of storage, and a 5,000mAh battery with 120W charging. To date there hasn't been an announcement regarding the global availability of the Xiaomi 14 series, but hopefully we'll have more details about that come 2024.

The S Pen may get its own home on the Galaxy Z Fold 6

While the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 supports the S Pen accessory, there is no silo or other housing for the S Pen on the body of the foldable. And the S Pen is an optional additional purchase for those buying the book-style foldable. But that might change as a U.S. patent awarded to Samsung Electronics by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) indicates that Samsung has devised a way for owners of a future Galaxy Z Fold model to store the digital stylus on-device so it will always be there when they need it.

Samsung gets a patent for on-phone storage for the S Pen on a Galaxy Z Fold phone

The patent is titled "Electronic device using electronic pen and method thereof," and was given the number US 11,803,268. An illustration from the patent posted on "X" by @xleaks7 shows how the S Pen can be stored on the back or the side of a future Galaxy S Fold handset. No, it's not a silo like you'll find on the Galaxy S23 Ultra, but it is a slot that the S Pen could fit into. The S Pen is an optional accessory for Galaxy Z Fold 5 buyers who can store it in a special stylus case that has a place where the S Pen can be housed until needed.

The S Pen may get its own home on the Galaxy Z Fold 6

By leaving room along the side of the phone or on the back, Samsung would be able to offer the Galaxy Z Fold 6 with the S Pen out of the box and give users a place to store it on-device without making the device any thicker. Samsung is expecting to sell over 10 million foldable phones next year and is looking to increase the number of higher-priced phones that it ships next year. Samsung's average selling price (ASP) for its smartphones is $295 compared to $988 for Apple so anything it can do to generate more demand for the Galaxy Z Fold 6 will help the company with its goal.

Just because Samsung has received a patent for on-phone storage of the S Pen for the Galaxy Z Fold 6 doesn't mean that the design change will happen next year, or at all. Many companies routinely apply for patents on some ideas even if they don't plan on using them in the near future.

The illustrations in the patent documentation also show an S Pen with extra buttons. One button would be used to interact with the phone while the S Pen tip hovers above the phone;s internal display. Another button could quickly change the color of the lines being "drawn" by the S Pen on the display without having to open the Settings on the phone.

Samsung might need to eat a price hike forced on it by including the S Pen with the Galaxy Z Fold 6

One thing to keep in mind is that if Samsung were to add the S Pen slots on the Galaxy Z Fold 6 next year and include the digital stylus with the phone right out of the box, it probably would have to raise the price of the device by about $50 or eat the additional cost. Considering the competition that the Galaxy Z Fold 5 has with the Pixel Fold, we wouldn't be surprised to see Samsung keep the Galaxy Z Fold 6's starting price unchanged. The Pixel Fold also has a $1,799 starting price.

The S Pen may get its own home on the Galaxy Z Fold 6

Another competitor that might force Samsung to include the S Pen out of the box with the Galaxy Z Fold 6 is the OnePlus Open. While that device does not include a stylus, many believe that it might have a better photography system than the Galaxy Z Fold 5.

According to Tom's Guide, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 could feature dust resistance, a larger and wider cover display, but it could be equipped with the same camera array used for Sammy's 2023 book-style foldable. Whether Samsung throws an S Pen into the mix along with a slot for the accessory is anyone's guess. The new foldable models aren't due until next summer so there is still plenty of time before we might find out what Samsung has in mind.

Vivo X100 Pro shows up in official pictures ahead of launch

With about a week left until vivo's big event where the company is expected to take the wraps off the vivo X100 series, the better device of the two that are to be unveiled next week has just popped up in official pictures.

We've been reporting about the vivo X100 since the Chinese company confirmed it will announce its new flagship on November 13. However, previous rumors claimed the X100 Pro model won't hit shelves until early next year, which doesn't seem to be accurate.

Earlier today, vivo published a bunch of official pictures of the vivo X100 Pro, one of the flagships that will be introduced next week. In addition, video teaser showing some of the most important technical specs has been posted on Chinese microblogging website Weibo.

Vivo X100 Pro shows up in official pictures ahead of launch

Thanks to all the marketing material revealed today, most of the previous reports about the vivo X100's specs have been confirmed. For starters, both the vivo X100 and X100 Pro will be equipped with MediaTek's Dimensity 9300 chipset.

Also, the X100 Pro will feature a same powerful triple camera that includes a 1-inch main sensor, a 64-megapixel periscope module, and Vario-Apo-Sonnar lenses.

Another new piece of information is the confirmed color options: Star Trail Blue, Sunset Orange, White Moonlight, and Chenye Black. More importantly, the price of the base 12/256GB vivo X100 has been posted on vivo's website and it's looking pretty good: CNY 3,999 ($550).

Sadly, vivo's flagships are likely to be exclusively available in China, so don't get your hopes too high if you're considering one (unless you live in the Mainland).

Vivo's upcoming flagship gets its insides revealed thanks to recent benchmark

Vivo was one of the biggest brands in China until Honor became the number one handset manufacturer in the country. That doesn't necessarily mean that the company lost its mojo, especially considering what Vivo has in the pipeline next.

As we reported early this week, Vivo confirmed its new flagship will be officially introduced on November 13. The company even published a picture of the phone to hype the upcoming event.

Since we already had reports that shed light on the Vivo X100's specs, it's probably no surprise that the phone is going to use one of MediaTek's powerful chipsets.

For those who haven't read any of the previous reports regarding Vivo X100's hardware, here is what a Geekbench list revealed (via MySmartPrice). As mentioned earlier, the X100 will be powered by MediaTek's Dimensity 9300 processor, paired with 12GB of RAM.

Also, the benchmark reveals that Vivo X100 will ship with Android 14 right out of the box. Well, not Google's clean of Android 14, but one specifically developed by Vivo called Origin OS 4.

That's about all we get from Geekbench, but previous leaks suggest Vivo's flagship will pack a triple camera featuring a Sony IMX920 main sensor and a Samsung ISOCELL JN1 wide-angle sensor.

We also know the phone's 5,000 mAh battery will support 120W fast charging. While Vivo X100 will be officially introduced in China next week, it's unlikely that this will be available in Europe or North America.

The OnePlus Tab is about to get much better thanks to OnePlus Open's awesome multitasking!

OnePlus launched its first foldable phone very recently, and it impressed the tech world with its combination of great hardware and outstanding camera system, but also with the level of polish on the software side of things. One feature related to the OnePlus Open's software experience is the multi-tasking tool called 'Open Canvas.' Now, Open Canvas is coming to the OnePlus Pad as well.

What is Open Canvas?

One of the main benefits of a larger screen is, of course, having more space to work with. Yes, having a big display is great for entertainment, but it also makes working and carrying out tasks a much more pleasant experience.

The OnePlus Tab is about to get much better thanks to OnePlus Open's awesome multitasking!

OnePlus' Open Canvas solution aims to make multi-window handling more seamless and natural. It allows users to customize the size and aspect ratio of app windows they have opened up. On the OnePlus Open, you have a cap of three apps in total that can be opened simultaneously: two are running side by side at all times, while a third one remains as a visual cue to the side, always a tap away.

Now, it would make sense if that cap increased for the OnePlus Tab, as the display is much larger than that of the OnePlus Open. Unfortunately, when OnePlus let owners of its first tablet know that Open Canvas is coming to the OnePlus Tab in an AMA on Reddit, it did not specify whether it would function the same way as on the OnePlus Open or if it has any differences and what they might be.

Nevertheless, this sounds like a potentially massive upgrade for the OnePlus Tab, making the tablet's potential as a productivity tool much more potent than it was during its launch at the beginning of this year. It seems like the company is catching the lead on large-screen Android devices.

Google makes it easier to identify secure apps in the Play Store

Google conducts reviews on apps submitted to the Play Store to ensure they comply with Google's policies and do not contain malicious code. Unfortunately, as we have seen in the past, some apps do slip through the cracks which means by the time it's discovered, it might be too late.

The good news is that Google has since announced a new Play Store initiative that will make it easier for users to discover apps that are secure. This will be done through a new "Independent Security Review" badge for certain apps that have met the security and privacy standards set by the industry.

Google makes it easier to identify secure apps in the Play Store

Apps that have this badge means that they have been reviewed by MASA (Mobile App Security Assessment) created by the App Defense Alliance (ADA) last year. According to Google:

"This signals to users that an independent third-party has validated that the developers designed their apps to meet these industry mobile security and privacy minimum best practices and the developers are going the extra mile to identify and mitigate vulnerabilities. This, in turn, makes it harder for attackers to reach users' devices and improves app quality across the ecosystem."

Google does note that just because an app has this badge does not mean that it is free from vulnerabilities. This would be near impossible because developers cannot anticipate every single scenario, but at the very least users will now be able to easily identify apps whose developer has prioritized security and privacy practices.

The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra could be the fastest flagship phone in 2024

If you're looking to get the best and most powerful flagship phone of 2024, the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra could be it. This is according to benchmarks which has revealed that the Galaxy S24 Ultra could be running an overclocked version of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.

Based on the benchmarks, the Galaxy S24 Ultra was clocked at 3.4GHz. For context, the official speeds offered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is 3.3GHz, meaning that Samsung will be using a slightly faster variant.

This seems to be a similar strategy that Samsung used this year with its Galaxy S23 Ultra where they had an exclusive deal with Qualcomm to supply them with an overclocked version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. The deal isn't permanently exclusive as Qualcomm later made it available to other handset makers, but at least for a period in time, the Galaxy S23 Ultra was the fastest phone available in the market.

That being said, CPU clock speed is only one aspect of a phone. There are other factors to consider when choosing a handset, like battery life, charging speed, cameras, size and weight, display, and so on. But if you're after the best possible performance, the Galaxy S24 Ultra could be it.

Google just figured out how to give any earbuds the ability to measure your heart rate

When it comes to wearables that can monitor our heart rate, smartwatches and fitness bands are probably some of the most common options out there. But there are some earbuds that have that ability as well, although they aren't quite as common.

The downside is that due to them not being so common, users will need to decide if measuring their heart rate is more important or sound quality, but in the future that may no longer be necessary, thanks to the efforts of Google's scientists.

In a study published by Google's researchers, it appears that the company has figured out a way to measure the heart rate of the user through off-the-shelf ANC earbuds. This is done through a method called Audioplethysmography (APG) by sending low intensity ultrasound signals, and receiving those signals back through the earbuds' built-in microphones.

It turns out our blood vessels in our ear canals change in accordance with our heart beat, so by using ultrasound, it measures those changes to determine the wearer's heart rate.

What's amazing is the fact that Google used off-the-shelf earbuds, meaning that apart from the requirement that these earbuds need to have ANC, in theory any earbuds could gain this feature through a software update. Of course, whether or not headphone makers will do that remains to be seen, since it is more lucrative to just build a new product and sell that to consumers who want that feature.

Qualcomm's CEO just confirmed some unfortunate Samsung Galaxy S24 news

The Samsung Galaxy S23 series is probably one of the best Android smartphones of 2023, especially if you live in a region in which past Samsung flagship launches would leave you stuck with an Exynos chipset while everyone else got the "better" Qualcomm variant.

Qualcomm's CEO just confirmed some unfortunate Samsung Galaxy S24 news

Unfortunately, the rumors have been claiming that Samsung is expected to return to its two-chip strategy with the Galaxy S24 series. For those hoping the rumors aren't true, that might seem like a pipe dream because Qualcomm's CEO Cristiano Amon has seemingly confirmed it.

During a recent conference call, Amon stated that the Galaxy S24 series will be released soon and that "Qualcomm has the majority market share". Unless Amon was simply talking about Qualcomm's market share as a whole, this would suggest that Samsung will be releasing the Galaxy S24 in both Exynos and Qualcomm variants.

Qualcomm's CEO just confirmed some unfortunate Samsung Galaxy S24 news

Regions like the US will be getting the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, while other regions like those in Asia will be getting the Exynos version, which at this point in time has been rumored to be the Exynos 2400. The Galaxy S24 series is expected to be announced in early 2024, possibly in January, so check back with us in the coming months for the details.

Galaxy Z Flip 5 Retro Edition brings back a classic colorway if you are old enough to remember

We heard rumors that Samsung was working on a new color variant for the Galaxy Z Flip 5 called the "Retro Edition". For those curious about the phone, it has since been officially launched but unfortunately, it will only be available in South Korea, the UK, Germany, Spain, Australia, and France.

Galaxy Z Flip 5 Retro Edition brings back a classic colorway if you are old enough to remember

As for what makes this the "Retro Edition", it turns out the colorway was not inspired by the Galaxy S3 as we previously thought. Instead, it is an homage to the Samsung SGH-E700 that was launched way, way back in 2003, a good two decades ago.

For those who are old enough to remember the handset, this is indeed one of Samsung's classics and a phone that I actually personally owned back in the day. It was one of the first few phones from back then that came with a built-in camera, and also software features that allowed users to capture photos and animate them.

Galaxy Z Flip 5 Retro Edition brings back a classic colorway if you are old enough to remember

These days these types of features are almost a given, but back then it was kind of groundbreaking. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 Retro Edition will come with three Flipsuit cards that feature different Samsung logos throughout the years, a Flipsuit case, and a collector card engraved with a unique serial number.

Apple to outclass Qualcomm's new laptop chipsets

Last week, Apple sent out invites to a "Scary Fast" event that will be taking place on the 30th of October. While the company did not mention what we can expect, it has been speculated that it will be the announcement of the new M3 chipsets that will power Apple's Mac computers for the next year.

So, what can we expect from the new M3 chipset? According to Mark Gurman's Power On newsletter, we can look forward to three new chipsets - the M3, the M3 Pro, and the M3 Max, which shouldn't be surprising given Apple's past M-series launches.

According to Gurman, the base M3 chipset will most likely feature an octa-core CPU and 10-core GPU, which has a similar configuration as the M2, but will benefit from being faster. The M3 Pro could come in a couple of different configurations, like a 12-core CPU with an 18-core GPU, or a 14-core CPU and a 20-core GPU. As for the M3 Max, which will be the top-of-the-line option, it is expected to pack a 16-core CPU with a whopping 32-40-core GPU.

Apple has been dominating the chipset space when it comes to ARM-based chipsets for computers. Qualcomm did launch its new Snapdragon X Elite recently in which benchmarks suggests that it has caught up with the Apple M1, but it falls short compared to the M2, so if the improvements of the M3 are anything to go by, Apple is expected to maintain their lead for the foreseeable future.

The electrifying release of the 5G Mate 60 series makes a huge impact on Huawei's bottom line

On the last day of August, Huawei shocked the smartphone industry by announcing its new Mate 60 flagship line. The company, despite facing U.S. sanctions that prevent it from obtaining cutting-edge chips, equipped the Mate 60, Mate 60 Pro, Mate 60 Pro+, and the Mare 60 RS with a 7nm homegrown Kirin 9000s application processor (AP) that supports 5G. The Mate 60 series featured the first 5G phones from Huawei since 2020's Mate 40 series which was powered by the Kirin 9000 chipset.

The introduction of the Mate 60 series with its 5G chipset shocked the smartphone world

The chip was reportedly made by China's largest foundry, SMIC, which is limited to previous-generation lithography equipment. Still, with tools obtained from other companies, SMIC used its Deep Ultraviolet Lithography machine and was able to give Huawei the 5G chips its previous flagship phones were unable to use. The Mate 50 series from 2022 and the P60 line from earlier this year were powered by the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC. Huawei received a license allowing it to buy the older but still powerful chip because it was tweaked so as not to support 5G signals.

The electrifying release of the 5G Mate 60 series makes a huge impact on Huawei's bottom line

But thanks to the Mate 60 line and the Kirin 9000s AP, Huawei sent a jolt of electricity through the Chinese smartphone market which is the top smartphone market in the world ahead of India and the U.S. This has led Huawei to report that third-quarter profits soared 118% in the period to 26.4 billion yuan ($3.6 billion) despite only a small hike in sales to 145.7 billion yuan. Being able to use your own chips will greatly improve your profit margin.

For those new to the smartphone world or the Huawei story, the Chinese manufacturer in 2016 said that in five years it would surpass Samsung and Apple to be the King of the smartphone world. And it came very close as it took the top spot from Samsung during April 2020. But the U.S. had already placed Huawei on the Entity List in 2019 which prevented the company from accessing its U.S. supply chain, including Google.

The following year, the U.S. revised its export rules to prevent foundries using American tech to make chips from shipping any cutting-edge silicon to Huawei. The U.S. was doing this all in the name of national security since Huawei was branded a national security threat in the U.S. along with fellow Chinese phone and network equipment manufacturer ZTE. Both firms were believed to have ties to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Despite developing its own operating system and ecosystem, once the U.S. sanctions took hold, Huawei quickly lost support from its once loyal customers.

Huawei's phones have Chinese consumers buzzing but the company still struggles to regain its status in China

Huawei had once dominated phone sales in China. During the third quarter of 2019, before the effects of the U.S. sanctions were felt, the company had a 42.4% share of the smartphone market in China and reported an incredible 66% year-over-year gain in domestic shipments for the three months.

And while the Mate 50 series released last year had consumers in China waiting in line, the company sold off its Honor sub-unit for an estimated $15 billion in 2020 to help Honor break away from the U.S. sanctions. While the sale raised much-needed funds for Huawei, it also created a new competitor in China. Last quarter, Honor had the largest slice of the Chinese smartphone market with an 18% share. Oppo and Apple were next with both achieving a market share of 16%.

In a statement, Huawei said, "We continue to optimize our management systems, improve the efficiency and quality of our operations, and refine our sales strategy and product mix. These actions have had a very positive impact on our profit margin."

Huawei continues to innovate despite the U.S. bans. The Mate 50 Pro beat out the iPhone 14 series by one day last year to become the first smartphone to offer emergency satellite communications. This year, the Mate 60 Pro offers users the ability to make satellite calls.

Carl Pei reveals why the Nothing Power (1) never made it to the marketplace

You just gotta love Carl Pei. Not only does he have the greatest "X" username of all time (@getpeid), but he helped launch not one, but two mobile firms from scratch in OnePlus and Nothing, and both firms look as though they will be big successes in a very competitive industry. Pei makes sure that Nothing is completely transparent as he disseminates messages and videos to the public often.

Recently, Nothing released a video about a product it was working on that didn't make it to the marketplace, the Nothing Power (1). This was a pocketable three-in-one charger that included support for 65W wireless charging. It also was equipped with internal batteries that were designed to charge multiple devices at the same time such as your laptop and phone. It is also a power bank. And as you can tell by looking at the video, the Nothing Power (1) sports the Nothing design language

Thinking back about the device, Pei said that it was scheduled to be released after the Nothing ear (1) which was released in August 2021. Pei and his team had high hopes for the Power (1) and said that it was really innovative, or at least Pei thought so at the time. While the device never shipped, the company learned plenty of lessons from the Power (1).

Carl Pei reveals why the Nothing Power (1) never made it to the marketplace

It seems that one reason why Pei didn't release the product was because all of the features it had were already available even though Nothing was packaging them together in one device. While that might be considered one type of innovation, the founder of the company said that the product would not have lived up to the potential of Nothing. "I think we can do a lot more than that," Pei said. He added that while the Power (1) might have been a great product in 2021, the company's ambitions in 2023 are a lot larger.

Pei says that the company gave up on bringing the device to the marketplace when all of the different teams working on it reported about challenges they were having. One problem that Pei mentions is that with a charger that small, to have it charge at the speed that he wanted it to, the company had to be careful about the thermals so that the device didn't get too hot. And Nothing had to make sure that the device was safe and durable. The Power (1) couldn't pass Nothing's drop tests.

Canceling the Power (1) was painful, according to Pei, but was "ultimately the right decision." Since then, the company has released two smartphones, a sequel to the Ear (1), and the Ear (stick).

Meet Amazfit's Two Newest Active-Series Wearables

Xiaomi's Amazfit sub-brand recently announced the launch of two new smart wearables, the Amazfit Active and Active Edge. Both devices share some similarities, although there are some considerable differences in terms of price and features included.

Meet Amazfit's Two Newest Active-Series Wearables

First up is the Amazfit Active, which features a 1.75-inch AMOLED touch display. Compared to the Active Edge, the "regular" Active comes with a squared-off design which is rated for 5ATM water resistance. The watch runs on Zepp OS with support for third-party software, as well as Amazon Alexa. The watch is powered by a 300 mAh battery that supposedly can last up to 14 days of use.

Meanwhile, the Amazfit Active Edge comes with a circular design that features a more "rugged" appearance. This houses a 1.32-inch TFT display and a 10ATM rating for better water protection. It also comes with a larger 370 mAh battery, which can last up to 20 days depending on usage. As with the regular model, it runs on Zepp OS.

Both devices come with support for Bluetooth connectivity, as well as support for a variety of sports modes and health tracking features including heart rate monitoring, sleep and stress tracking, and personal exercise plans. The Amazfit Active and Active Edge are priced at $149.99.

Xiaomi 14: The world's first Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 smartphone has arrived

Earlier this week, Qualcomm announced its latest flagship chipset, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. Xiaomi also took to the stage during the event to confirm that its next flagship phone, the Xiaomi 14 series, will be the first to use the new chipset, and for those eager to get their hands on the device, the Xiaomi 14 series have been officially announced!

There are two phones in the lineup (for now) which includes the base Xiaomi 14 and the more expensive and feature rich Xiaomi 14 Pro. Both phones will be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, so in terms of performance, both these devices are more or less identical.

One of the more obvious differences would be its design. The Xiaomi 14 looks like your typical smartphone with flat edges and an edge-to-edge display, while the Xiaomi 14 Pro has opted for a sleeker look with a slightly curved displays thanks to the use of Xiaomi's Longjing Glass.

Xiaomi 14: The world's first Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 smartphone has arrived

Another difference is that the Xiaomi 14 will feature a smaller 6.36-inch display, while the Xiaomi 14 Pro will sport a larger 6.73-inch display, but even then both displays will have support for HDR10+, a peak brightness of 3,000 nits, and also a 120Hz refresh rate.

Another main difference is that the Xiaomi 14 will be available starting with 8GB of RAM and will go up to 16GB, while the Xiaomi 14 Pro will launch with 12GB and 16GB options, so there will be more RAM right off the bat.

In the camera department, interestingly enough both phones will feature near-identical camera specs. Both phones will feature a triple camera setup with a 50MP main, a 50MP telephoto, and a 50MP ultrawide, the only difference being that the Xiaomi 14 Pro's main camera has a slightly wider aperture of f/1.4 versus the f/1.6 on the Xiaomi 14.

Xiaomi 14: The world's first Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 smartphone has arrived

Both cameras do feature Leica's branding and will also feature the use of a new "Light Hunter 900" sensor, ditching the use of the 1-inch sensor which is honestly a bit of a shame, but we'll have to wait and see how it performs in real-life before we judge it. In terms of battery, the Xiaomi 14 will sport a smaller 4,610mAh battery with 90W wired charging, while the Xiaomi 14 Pro will come with a larger 4,880mAh battery with 120W charging.

Both phones are currently available for pre-order in China for now, with the Xiaomi 14 starting at CNY 3,999, while the Xiaomi 14 Pro will be priced starting at CNY 4,999. If the rumors are true, we can expect to see both phones launch globally starting next year.

Samsung's Galaxy Tab A9 Series is Now Official

A while back, we got word that Samsung began launching a new budget Android device (albeit discreetly) in select markets, with the Galaxy Tab A9 series. Initially spotted on Samsung's Guatemalan and UAE websites, the lineup consists of the Tab A9 and the larger Tab A9+.

With that in mind, the company has finally - and formally - announced the launch of its new budget tablet devices, which are now available in select markets worldwide. They're also priced just around the 300-dollar price point, making them more affordable than most competitors out there.

In terms of specs, the base model Galaxy Tab A9 comes with a small 8.7-inch IPS screen, with a rather average 800 x 1340 pixel resolution. The tablet also features up to 8GB of RAM and 128GB of expandable storage inside, alongside MediaTek's Helio G99 processor. The tablet will be available in Wifi and LTE variants, and will run on a modest 5,100 mAh battery.

Meanwhile, the larger Tab A9+ will comes with a larger 11-inch LCD screen with a 1200 x 1920 pixel resolution and 90hz refresh rate. Unlike its smaller sibling however, the A9+ is powered by a larger 7,040 mAh battery, with up to 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. There's also a 5G version in addition to a standard Wifi model.

T-Mobile realizes forcing customers to migrate to more expensive plans was a bad idea after all

Customers love being given a choice, which is something that T-Mobile has come to realize as they have since announced that they will be scrapping a program that would have forced legacy customers to migrate to more expensive plans.

Earlier this month, a leaked internal memo revealed that T-Mobile was looking to force migration upon its customers who were still using its legacy plans to its newer and more expensive options. This was met with a lot of backlash as not all customers needed the features and perks offered by these newer plans and were happy paying for what they were currently using.

T-Mobile's CEO later claimed that this was only part of a "test" and that the carrier was trying to figure out what would work best for its customers. During the carrier's quarterly earnings call, the company essentially walked back on it where T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert was quoted as saying:

"I think we've learned that particular test cell isn't something that our customers are going to love. We had planned it as a test cell, and then we aren't doing it because I think we've got plenty of feedback."

Had this plan gone through, T-Mobile customers would have been automatically upgraded to the newer plans, but they would also have the option to opt out. One of the problems with this plan is that not all customers may realize they have been upgraded which could have caused some issues. Making it opt-in would have been a better solution, but regardless, it looks like those plans have been scrapped.

The Pixel 8 Pro's display trumps Apple and Samsung in power efficiency

On the surface, Google's Pixel 8 Pro looks like a regular phone. In fact, it's almost kind of boring, but if you're looking for a phone that could potentially have great battery life, then the Pixel 8 Pro could be a smartphone worth considering.

This is because according to tests conducted on the Pixel 8 Pro's display, it has been found to be the most power efficient display available right now, or at least one of the most power efficient. This is compared against its predecessor, the Pixel 7 Pro, and also against the iPhone 14 Pro Max and the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra.

According to the tests, the Pixel 8 Pro hit its peak brightness of 960 nits while only consuming 3.0W of power, whereas the Pixel 7 Pro more than doubled its energy consumption at 6.4W to hit similar brightness levels. The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra and iPhone 14 Pro Max are actually not too far behind, but the Pixel 8 Pro still takes the cake.

The Pixel 8 Pro's display trumps Apple and Samsung in power efficiency

Of course, display power efficiency is only one aspect that contributes to overall battery life, but it might be an important point of consideration for some who are looking to squeeze as much battery life out of their phones as possible.

Prepare your wallets! Qualcomm hints that Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 could be more costly

The prices of our smartphones seem to be going up over the years and there are plenty of reasons for it, but come 2025, it seems that one of those reasons could be the use of Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chipset, which is expected to power the majority of flagship phones launching that year.

This is according to a report from Android Authority based on an answer that Qualcomm had given in response to a question. During the Snapdragon Summit, Qualcomm revealed that its next-gen chipset following the recently-announced Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, would be powered by custom Oryon CPU cores.

Qualcomm senior vice president Chris Patrick later suggested that due to the use of these custom CPU cores, it could result in costs for making the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 to be higher. Since we doubt that smartphone makers will be absorbing these costs on behalf of their customers, it means that those cost increases will be passed on to consumers instead.

It is unclear how much more expensive we're talking about and it would be hard to tell. Different companies have different deals with their suppliers, where those who order a higher volume might be eligible for a bigger discount, but either way, 2024 might be a better year to upgrade your smartphone if you're not looking forward to paying more in 2025.

Qualcomm's latest chipset for Windows could give Apple some serious competition

Apple's M-series chipsets have been absolutely killing it, offering users massive performance upgrades over Intel's CPUs and also offering insane battery life. But it looks like Windows users could soon enjoy similar benefits, at least if these recently-discovered Geekbench benchmark scores are anything to go by.

The benchmarks are for Qualcomm's upcoming Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4 chipset which will be used to power Windows PCs. According to the benchmark scores, the chipset managed to score 1,197 on single-core and 9,337 on multi-core. As noted by Windows Latest, this new chipset still lags behind the M2 which scored between 2,592-2,645 for single-core and 9,797-14,197 for multi-core, but the gap is definitely closing.

It did, however, manage to beat the Apple M1 chipset, at least on the multi-core front.

Keep in mind that nothing official has been announced yet and that benchmarks can be faked or manipulated, but assuming these are semi-accurate, at this rate, it might take Qualcomm one or two more generations before the gap is closed or even surpassed, but for now it looks very promising.

Qualcomm has been developing ARM-based chipsets for Windows PCs in the past, but their performance levels did leave much to be desired, but these benchmarks certainly show a lot of potential.

Recently, there have also been rumors that in 2024/2025, NVIDIA and AMD could step in with their own ARM chipsets for PCs, providing PC makers and users with more potentially powerful options.

Google Chrome will be borrowing this iCloud feature to enhance user privacy

Every device that is connected to the internet has an IP address that helps identify them. While there are legitimate purposes for IP addresses, it can also be used for nefarious purposes like tracking where a device is logging in from. If you're concerned about your privacy, then you're in luck, especially if you're a Google Chrome user.

This is because Google seems to be working on a new "IP Protection" feature for Chrome, which as its name suggests, will protect your IP by hiding it from prying eyes. This means that when you surf the web, your IP address will be masked using proxy servers so that the website you're visiting won't know your actual IP address.

This is similar to using VPN services which can hide your IP address, perfect for users who need to mask their location and to prevent cross-site tracking. If this feature sounds familiar, it is because Apple actually has something similar to iOS devices called Privacy Relay. There are also other browsers such as Brave that also offer features that help users hide their IP address while browsing the internet.

That being said, there are some potential risks to using the IP Protection feature in Chrome. According to Google, as traffic will be sent through Google's servers, it could make it harder for security and fraud protection services to block DDoS attacks or detect invalid traffic. Another risk is that should Google's proxy servers become compromised, hackers could potentially see and even manipulate traffic that passes through it.

Chrome's new IP Protection feature will roll out initially as a test for users logged into Chrome with US-based IP addresses. It will also be an opt-in feature so users will have to enable it manually.

Nokia set to Lay Off 14,000 Personnel Due to Shrinking 5G Demand

While Nokia is usually known for its mobile devices, the company also makes a ton of profit from providing networking solutions such as Wifi routers and 5G equipment. However, it looks like things haven't been so peachy lately for the Finnish telecommunications giant.

In what is essentially the latest entry in a series of massive tech layoffs, Nokia recently announced that it will terminate 14,000 jobs in a bid to cut costs, following a considerable 20% drop due to weakening demand for 5G equipment. The latter is attributed to a slowdown of demand from the North American market, although the company has also attempted to establish growth in other markets like India.

In an interview with Reuters, Nokia Chief Executive Pekka Lundmark explained the circumstances influencing this decision:

The market situation is really challenging and it is witnessed by the fact that in our most important market, which is the North American market, our net sales are down 40% in Q3.

Following this massive layoff, Nokia is hoping to save up to 800 million euros ($842 million) and 1.2 billion euros by 2026. This reduction in personnel is expected to bring down the company's employee base from 86,000 down to between 72,000 and 77,000.

Recently, chip manufacturer Qualcomm also announced that it will be terminating around 1,200 employees, due to "continued uncertainty in the macroeconomic and demand environment," according to the company.

Samsung Plans to Sell More Foldables Amidst Rising Competition

Perhaps it's safe to say that while the record for the first-ever smart foldable launch goes to the Royole Flexpai, it was Samsung that really kickstarted a large part of the foldable smartphone trend. It's been half a decade now since the launch of the first-ever Galaxy Fold device, and we've seen a lot of new foldables from other manufacturers since.

As such, a new report suggests that Samsung might be planning to up the ante, that is by selling more foldable devices in 2024 - around 20 million, in fact. This estimated number will include sales of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5, as well as the upcoming Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6. Perhaps the South Korean tech giant is finally feeling the onslaught of new foldables from the top Chinese OEMs.

Just recently, research firm Counterpoint Statistics reported that Samsung dominated global market sales this year - the company was able to secure a fifth of the total sales in Q3 2023 thanks to its popular A-series smartphones, which continue to outsell its flagship devices and foldables.

Going back to Samsung's 20-million sales goal, it's also reported that the company will focus on launching thinner and lighter foldable devices next year, something that we've seen on some of this year's devices from competing brands such as xiaomi, Oppo and OnePlus.

For a long time, sales teams did things the old fashioned way - cold calling potential customers, sending emails, and meeting in person. But now, new technologies are quickly changing the sales game. In this article, we'll look at some of the latest tech tools sales teams are using to boost results. We'll also chat about key technologies shaping modern sales workflows.

Moving to Tech-Powered Sales Tactics

Old school sales focused a ton on outbound prospecting, phone conversations, and in-person meetings. While these approaches still matter, new technologies have created fresh ways for sales reps to connect with potential buyers in a more personal, targeted manner.
According to LinkedIn’s 2022 State of Sales report, over 90% of sales teams now use tech tools like CRMs, sales engagement platforms, and marketing automation software. Companies are investing heavily in cloud computing and new programs to upgrade their sales and marketing operations.
Tech-powered sales strategies offer many upsides, including:

  1. Automating manual tasks to improve efficiency
  2. Accessing more sales data and analytics to refine strategies
  3. Reaching buyers on their preferred digital platforms
  4. Personalizing messaging to make it more relevant
  5. Speeding up sales cycles and accelerating deals

With buyers over halfway through their decision making before ever talking to a sales rep, technology is critical for connecting with prospects earlier in their journey. Tech-driven tactics ensure sales teams can actively nurture leads, show ROI quickly, and ultimately drive higher conversion rates.

Simulive Events - A Next Gen Approach

One exciting new tech innovation changing modern sales tactics is simulive. Simulive webinars blend the flexibility of pre-recorded video with the authenticity of live events for a more engaging prospect experience.
With simulive events, sales and marketing teams can easily produce on-demand product demos, trainings, and virtual events with interactive elements like polls, Q&As, and live chats. These hybrid digital experiences boost engagement by allowing audiences to take in info on their own time while still connecting in real-time.
For example, a SaaS startup could use simulive webinars to host a demo day highlighting their platform’s capabilities. Prospects could view sections when convenient and get their specific questions answered live by product experts.
Compared to just pre-recorded content, simulive events drive 43% higher viewer attention, 32% greater recall, and 23% increased purchase intent. As today’s buyers want more dynamic content, simulive webinars are becoming a go-to medium for sales teams aiming to deliver next-level digital experiences.

Capitalizing on Real-Time Interaction

On top of video-based approaches like simulive production, sales teams are also tapping technology to facilitate real-time engagement across channels.
Real-time engagement platforms are gaining steam in commercial real estate, allowing brokers to instantly interact with prospective tenants visiting listings online. By kicking off live chats, brokers can right away field questions, schedule tours, and accelerate deal velocity.
According to real estate developer Granite Properties, leveraging real-time engagement led to 50% more leads and a 36% faster time-to-market for available spaces.
As buyer expectations shift, sales teams are using tech to recreate face-to-face conversation online. Real-time engagement powered by chatbots, live chats, and messaging helps teams nurture prospects proactively and shrink the time between initial interest and closed deals.

Social Media Emerging as a Sales Channel

Once seen solely as a brand awareness tool, social media has morphed into a vital sales channel for engaging buyers directly. Platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn all enable social selling, allowing brands to interact with prospects and generate leads straight from social content.
However, no platform has disrupted sales strategies quite like TikTok. With over 1 billion monthly active users, TikTok has become a key channel for driving conversions. Brands leverage short-form video content to teach audiences, run lead gen campaigns, and drive traffic to sales funnels.
Vendors like Swvl used TikTok to score 1200% more website clicks during their IPO campaign. Others tap into TikTok’s native commerce tools like shoppable videos to enable in-app purchases.
As younger audiences flock to emerging platforms like TikTok, forward-thinking sales teams are expanding social strategies to engage prospects where they’re already hanging out online. Integrating social selling into existing workflows is crucial for maximizing reach.

AI and Automation Reshaping Operations

According to a G2 survey, nearly 75% of SMBs are hesitant to adopt AI and automation in sales and marketing. Concerns around costs, data privacy, and less human interaction contribute to this reluctance.
However, when applied effectively, AI and automation provide major advantages:

  1. Machine learning algorithms can comb through customer data to identify ideal buyer profiles and refine targeting.
  2. Chatbots and virtual assistants can qualify leads and book demos 24/7.
  3. Automated workflows nurture prospects with hyper-personalized messaging at scale.

Leading sales teams combine AI with human oversight and interaction. People.ai blends automation with human nuance around tone and messaging for more impactful outreach. This hybrid model maximizes technology while retaining the human touch.
Though adoption is gradual, AI and automation are streamlining sales workflows. As tasks like lead scoring and data entry become automated, reps can focus on value-driven activities like relationship-building and closing complex deals.

Overcoming Tech Marketing Challenges

Despite the rise of tech, the 2023 Informa Tech Trust in Marketing Index revealed trust remains a major hurdle. Over half of consumers feel overwhelmed by irrelevant promotions and believe brands don’t have their best interests in mind.
To maximize results, tech-driven marketing strategies must prioritize transparency, relevance, and consent:

  1. Transparency - Clearly communicate how data is collected and used. Assure customers they are in control.
  2. Relevance - Use data to segment audiences and deliver timely, personalized messaging that provides real value.
  3. Consent - Allow consumers to opt-in and out of communications. Never spam buyers or use overly pushy outreach.

When leveraged strategically, technology builds trust by demonstrating an understanding of each person's needs. With consumer confidence as the base, tech-driven strategies perform much better across metrics like brand awareness, consideration rate, and lifetime value.

What's Next for Sales Technologies

While old school sales tactics still have merit, blending in new technologies is now essential for success. As buyers expect personalized, on-demand engagement, tech-driven strategies will only get more crucial.
In the near future, expect advanced technologies like AI, VR, and predictive analytics to transform sales workflows. VR could allow prospects to experience products virtually during consideration. Predictive analytics may uncover buyer objections before reps even reach out.
Ultimately, embracing innovation while staying grounded in human relationships is key. With trust, relevance and transparency as guiding principles, sales teams can boost conversions through technology while maintaining authentic human connections. The future looks bright for forward-thinking sales organizations.
Technology will keep rapidly evolving, bringing new opportunities to engage buyers and drive revenue. However, by keeping focused on impact and value, modern sales teams can thrive through any amount of change. The right tools empower reps to nurture prospects in a truly customer-centric way. While the tactics may shift, putting people first will always be the foundation of sales excellence.

Casino gambling is an age-old pastime that has been enjoyed by people all over the world. It is a popular form of entertainment that offers the thrill of taking risks and the potential to win big. People are drawn to the excitement and rush that comes with playing various casino games, such as blackjack, poker, roulette, and slot machines.

Unleashing the Thrill: Why Online Casinos Are the Future of Gaming

One of the main reasons why people enjoy casino gambling so much is the adrenaline rush it gives them. The uncertainty of whether they will win or lose adds to the excitement of the experience. The possibility of winning a large sum of money with just one lucky spin or card hand is a major motivation for many people to continue playing.

Aside from the potential of winning money, casino gambling also offers a social aspect. Many people visit casinos with their friends or loved ones, making it a fun and social experience. They can bond over the shared excitement of playing and cheering on each other's wins.

What makes the experience even more thrilling is the atmosphere of a traditional casino. The bright lights, the sounds of the slot machines, and the energy of the players all add to the overall experience. It is an escape from reality and a way to let loose and have some fun.

However, with the advancement of technology, the casino industry has seen a significant shift towards online gambling. Online casinos offer the same thrills and excitement as traditional physical casinos, but with added convenience and accessibility.

Its Advantages

One of the major advantages of online casinos is that they can be accessed from anywhere at any time. Players no longer have to travel to a physical casino to enjoy their favorite games. They can simply log on to their computer or mobile device and play from the comfort of their own home.

Online casinos also offer a wider range of the best online casino games than physical casinos. Players have access to a vast selection of traditional casino games, as well as newer and more innovative options. This variety keeps players engaged and adds to the overall enjoyment of the experience.

Additionally, online casinos often offer lucrative bonuses and promotions, enticing players to keep coming back for more. This not only adds to the fun of playing but also increases the potential for bigger wins.

Furthermore, the anonymity of online gambling allows players to focus solely on the games without any external distractions. This can enhance the overall gambling experience and make it even more enjoyable.

These very reasons make online casinos get the same love and popularity in the casino world as land-based casinos. It's a way for people to indulge in their favorite gambling activities from the comfort of their own home. The added convenience and accessibility make it possible for more people to join in on the fun and experience the thrill of casino gambling.

It's The Future of Gaming!

Online casinos have been gaining immense popularity in recent years and it's no surprise why. With the advancement of technology, online casinos have become the future of gaming. Not only do they offer the same thrills and excitement as traditional physical casinos, but they also have unique properties that make them stand out in the world of gaming.

One of the standout features of online casinos is their convenience and accessibility. As mentioned earlier, players can access online casinos from anywhere at any time, making it possible to indulge in their favorite gambling activities without leaving their homes. This allows for a more flexible and personalized gaming experience.

Moreover, online casinos are constantly evolving and innovating. They are always looking for new and exciting ways to engage and entertain their users. With the use of cutting-edge technology, online casinos are able to offer immersive and interactive experiences that were previously not possible in traditional casinos. Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) are two technologies that have already been incorporated into the world of online gambling. They allow players to fully immerse themselves in a virtual casino environment, making the experience even more realistic and thrilling.

Another factor that makes online casinos the future of gaming is the potential for even more exciting features to be introduced in the near future. The possibilities are endless, from live streaming of games to incorporating social media elements into the gaming experience.

One of the main draws of online casinos is the ability to offer a wider range of games than traditional casinos. In the future, we can expect to see even more variety and innovation in online casino gaming. This will not only attract more players to the industry but also keep existing players engaged and coming back for more.

Moreover, online casinos also have the potential to offer a more personalized gaming experience. With the use of data and algorithms, these platforms can cater to individual player preferences, making the gambling experience even more tailored and enjoyable.

As technology continues to advance, the potential for online casinos to offer new and exciting features is limitless. It is safe to say that online casinos are the future of gaming, and we can expect to see even more thrilling and innovative developments in the coming years.

Oppo's Find N3 series hits the global market

Usually when Chinese smartphone manufacturers announce a new phone, it tends to be made available in China first before it launches globally (if at all). This was the case with the Oppo Find N3 series that was launched back in August, but if you're not in China but like what you see, the global availability of both phones has since been announced.

During an event held in Singapore, Oppo announced the global availability of both the Find N3 and Find N3 Flip. The company says that pre-orders will kick off tomorrow on the 20th of October with prices starting at SGD1,499 (~$950) for the Find N3 Flip with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, and SGD2,399 (~$1,750) for the Find N3 with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage.

Oppo's Find N3 series hits the global market

In case you're learning about either phone for the first time, the Oppo Find N3 Flip will feature a 3.26-inch external AMOLED display with a 60Hz refresh rate, while its inner foldable display comes in at 6.8-inches with a 120Hz refresh rate. It uses Oppo's Flexion hinge design and under the hood, a MediaTek Dimensity 9200 chipset can be found, alongside a 4,300mAh battery.

The phone is also the first foldable flip phone with a triple camera setup which consists of a 50MP main shooter, a 48MP ultrawide, and a 32MP optical zoom, with a 32MP camera on the inside for the selfie cam.

Oppo's Find N3 series hits the global market

As for the Find N3, it packs a 6.3-inch display on the outside while its inner foldable display opens up to 7.8-inches, making it a pretty sizable device if you want a more tablet-like experience. The inner display also has a 120Hz refresh rate and it will also rely on Oppo's Flexion hinge technology.

Unlike the Find N3 Flip, the Find N3 will be powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset and comes with a 4,800mAh battery. For its cameras, the Find N3 will feature a Hasselblad-branded triple camera setup with a 48MP two-layer stacked CMOS sensor, a 48MP ultrawide, and a 64MP telephoto, with a 20MP selfie cam for the outer display, and a 32MP selfie cam for the inner display.

The OnePlus Open might have what it takes to take Samsung's crown

OnePlus has officially announced their foldable phone - the OnePlus Open, and with that, it marks the company's entry into the foldables market where they will be challenging the likes of companies such as Samsung, Motorola, Oppo, Vivo, and more. But the question is, will the OnePlus Open have what it takes to make it?

The OnePlus Open might have what it takes to take Samsung's crown

One of the more noticeable things about the OnePlus Open is the aspect ratio that the company has chosen, making the outer display look more like your typical smartphone. This is a good thing for those who want to use the outer display from time to time but don't want a narrow design which is what some other handset makers have opted for.

Speaking of the outer display, it measures 6.31-inches and has a peak brightness of 2,800 nits and a refresh rate of 120Hz, making it feel like OnePlus has given thought to its design. As for its inner display, when unfolded, the OnePlus Open measures 7.82-inches with an 89.6% screen-to-body ratio that is further reinforced with a triple layer of protection consisting of an Ultra-Thin Glass, a TPU layer that helps protect it from impact, and an anti-reflective screen protector.

Under the hood, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset can be found, meaning that users can expect the same high-level performance that you might expect from a flagship phone in 2023. It also comes with 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM, 512GB of UFS 4.0 storage, and a 4,805mAh battery that supports 67W SuperVOOC charging.

The OnePlus Open might have what it takes to take Samsung's crown

While some makers of foldable phones tend to focus on the foldable display and end up neglecting the cameras, it seems that OnePlus hasn't.

The OnePlus Open features a triple camera setup where its main shooter is a 48MP Sony Lytia-T808 Pixel Stacked sensor with OIS. It is also accompanied with a 64MP periscope telephoto lens, and a 48MP ultrawide camera. There are also two selfie cams where the outer display has a 32MP camera while the inner display has a 20MP camera. Users can also expect an improved Hasselblad Portrait Mode thanks to the company's ongoing partnership with the camera maker.

The OnePlus Open might have what it takes to take Samsung's crown

The handset will be powered by OxygenOS 13.2, and according to OnePlus, users can rest assured knowing that 95% of mainstream apps are compatible with the foldable display, so they don't have to worry about apps being resized weirdly or having to make adjustments to the way they use their apps.

There is also a new Open Canvas feature that will take advantage of the larger foldable display, giving users a desktop-like taskbar at the bottom of the screen, giving users quick access to apps and more.

If the OnePlus Open is a foldable phone you think you might be on board with, the phone will open for pre-order starting today where it will be priced at $1,699.99. OnePlus is also offering a trade-in program during the pre-order period. This will let you get $200 in trade-in credit for any phone in any condition, which is perfect if you have an old device sitting in your drawer collecting dust, or up to $1,000 off if you have a newer device.

Samsung's rumored Galaxy Watch "Ultra" could feature an upgraded display

Last year, Apple announced the Apple Watch Ultra, a more expensive but more feature-rich variant of the regular Apple Watch lineup. Now it looks like Samsung could be next to try and take a stab at the "Ultra" smartwatch as the company is rumored to be working on a Galaxy Watch "Ultra" model.

According to a report from GizmoChina, they claim that the Ultra model will be utilizing micro LED display technology. For context, the current Galaxy Watch 6 models rely on OLED, which is pretty much the same display tech used in many smartphones today.

While both OLED and micro LED have "LED" in their names, they are quite different from each other. One of the primary advantages micro LEDs have over OLED is their lifespan, where OLED displays are prone to burn-ins over time, whereas micro LEDs aren't, making them preferable for devices like TVs.

Apart from the potential use of micro LEDs, it is unclear what other differences this Ultra Galaxy Watch will have over its non-Ultra counterparts. Samsung did attempt to launch a Galaxy Watch model back in 2022 with the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro. It featured a larger display, long-lasting battery, more outdoorsy tracking features, and it also utilized titanium, but design wise it wasn't too different from the regular model.

In any case seeing as we're approaching the end of the year, we doubt that we'll be seeing this Ultra model launch in the coming months, so take it with a grain of salt for now.

The OG Pixel Watch is getting Wear OS 4 as we speak

If you happen to own a Pixel Watch that runs on Wear OS 3.5 or later, then you might be pleased to learn that Google has announced that the Wear OS 4 update has started to roll out to these devices.

Wear OS 4 was revealed earlier this year at Google I/O 2023 and with this update, Pixel Watch owners can look forward to all the changes that the company announced.

This includes the inclusion of the Google Calendar app that will be preinstalled on your watch following the update, giving users quick and easy access to their calendars and see what meetings or events they have coming up.

There will also be new safety features including Safety Check, Emergency Sharing, and Emergency Info. Google has also enhanced the notifications which now comes with a smart link when it detects things like phone numbers and addresses, allowing users the ability to quickly make a call or find directions just by tapping on them.

There are also a bunch of new accessibility features such as text-to-speech, TalkBack will also now be safer and more reliable, bold text, improved magnification, and more. The update is being rolled out as we speak so if you have a compatible Pixel Watch, then this is an update you'll want to keep an eye out for.

Xiaomi Teases Major UI Overhaul with Hyper OS

One of the biggest traits of Android is its ability to be customized with additional features and visual effects, which helps manufacturers differentiate their brands from rivals and competitors. As a result, we've gotten different variations of Android such as Samsung's One UI, Oppo's Color OS, and Xiaomi's MIUI, to name a few.

In the case of MIUI, there's been some speculation that Xiaomi might introduce a newer version of its mobile interface, which is expected to come with changes to how users can interact with its smartphones. It looks like this is bound to happen soon, as confirmed by Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun.

Based on a photo shared on Jun's official social media account, Xiaomi will be introducing a new mobile interface dubbed "HyperOS", which will make its debut on the upcoming Xiaomi 14 series smartphones. Jun adds that Hyper OS is the result of "years of collective work." There's no word on whether or not the new interface will make its way to older devices, although it shouldn't come as a surprise if that were the case.

While MIUI was undoubtedly unique in its own way, it wasn't the most efficient Android skin, with users complaining of occasional performance bugs and glitches. With that in mind, we're hoping Hyper OS comes with a ton of improvements (and less bloatware, as well).

The new Apple Pencil has a very questionable design, but at least it's cheaper!

Apple's iPad Pro when combined with the Apple Pencil accessory is arguably one of the best portable drawing tools you can buy out there today. The main problem is that the Apple Pencil is a very expensive accessory and there's really no two ways about it, but if you want the Apple Pencil but don't want to pay the Apple tax, you're in luck.

Apple has announced a new Apple Pencil. This new accessory isn't the successor to the second-gen Apple Pencil, but rather it's a cheaper alternative. Its physical design is pretty much identical to the second-gen Apple Pencil, but there are some features that it is lacking compared to its more expensive sibling.

The new Apple Pencil has a very questionable design, but at least it's cheaper!

For example, it lacks pressure sensitivity. It also does not support the double-tap feature that lets you switch between tools, and there is no support for wireless pairing and charging which is admittedly one of the best features of the second-gen Apple Pencil, which brings us to our point about the questionable design choice Apple has made.

The new Apple Pencil has a sliding cap that when removed, reveals a USB-C port. This is to allow users to charge the accessory when it runs low on battery. I'll be honest, I kind of hate this design and it is almost as silly as the first-gen Apple Pencil which you had to plug into your iPad's Lightning Connector to charge.

The new Apple Pencil has a very questionable design, but at least it's cheaper!

This is admittedly a slightly better solution but it still feels kind of dumb. Users will still be able to mount the new Apple Pencil to the iPad magnetically, but while it is mounted, it enters sleep mode to preserve battery life as opposed to charging. This means that if you're planning to travel with it, you'll want to make sure you have enough battery life in the Apple Pencil.

Thankfully, Apple has the decency not to overcharge users for the new model. It is priced at $79 which is about $50 cheaper than the second-gen model and is expected to be released in November. If you don't want to spring for the (better) second-gen model, you can always get the first-gen model which at least has pressure sensitivity for $99.

The Oppo A2x could be the ultimate budget smartphone

The prices of smartphones have gone through the roof in recent years, where buying a flagship phone for $1,000 is starting to become the (disturbing) norm. Luckily, if you're in the market for a cheap smartphone, Oppo has you covered with their latest handset, the Oppo A2x.

There's honestly not much to say about the Oppo A2x. The phone comes with a 6.56-inch LCD panel with a HD+ resolution, but on the upside it does boast a 90Hz refresh rate, making it better than more expensive models that still pack a 60Hz refresh rate as its default. It also has a peak brightness of 720 nits.

The Oppo A2x could be the ultimate budget smartphone

Under the hood, a MediaTek Dimensity 6020 chipset can be found where it will be offered with either 6GB or 8GB of LPDDR4X RAM, along with 128GB or 256GB of storage. There is a microSD card for storage expansion, a bit of a rarity these days, so it's nice to see that Oppo hasn't ditched it completely yet.

As for the cameras, the Oppo A2x comes with a single 13MP camera with an aperture of f/2.2 and an LED flash, while the front-facing camera is of the 5MP variety. Once again, nothing to write home about. There is a 5,000mAh battery, support for fingerprint scanning, and there is also a 3.5mm headphone jack.

In terms of pricing, the base Oppo A2x will be priced at CNY1,099 which is roughly $150 after conversion, or CNY1,399 (~$190) for the model that comes with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. There's no word on international availability, so don't get your hopes up just yet unless you get it from gray market imports.

Samsung could beat TSMC at their own game

For a while, TSMC was leading the way when it came to the development of chipsets, creating more transistor-dense chipsets using smaller fabrication processes compared to the competition. But now it looks like TSMC is starting to fall behind and Samsung could actually beat them at their own game.

A recent report from PulseNews has revealed that TSMC has apparently slowed down their development progress in Baoshan due to a slowdown in the demand for chips. This also means that TSMC could delay the launch of their 2nm chipset, which in turn could result in Samsung launching a 2nm chipset before TSMC does.

It was initially expected that TSMC would be the first to launch a 3nm chipset, but Samsung actually managed to beat them to it. Assuming Samsung manages to maintain their pace and developmental progress, it is possible that Samsung could once again beat TSMC by launching the first 2nm chip.

This has huge implications because many companies like Apple and Qualcomm actually rely on TSMC for their chipsets, but if Samsung could create something better before TSMC does, those companies could start shifting more orders over to Samsung. It probably isn't as simple as that as things like pricing, quality control, yield rates, and more need to be factored in, but for now, it looks like Samsung is winning the race.

Google's Pixel 8 Phones Dominate Rivals in DXOMARK Tests

Perhaps it shouldn't be too surprising to say that some Android users have a love-hate relationship with Google Pixel phones. While Pixel devices have a generally satisfying software experience, some users might feel differently about the hardware onboard the phones, which usually play it safe while getting the job done.

This time however, things have taken a different turn at least in terms of display quality. Recent scores from online benchmarking site DXOMARK show that the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro perform impressively, even managing to outrank top-tier rivals such as the iPhone 15 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra.

More specifically, DXOMARK awarded scores of 154 for the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro, placing them first in the overall global rankings. According to DXOMARK, factors such as well-rendered colors, screen legibility, HDR10 video rendering, as well as a smooth and reactive scrolling experience were the main strong points of the displays on both devices. Meanwhile, the iPhone 15 Pro max and Galaxy S23 Ultra ranked 6th and 10th place, respectively.

There were some downsides however, such as aliasing during gaming, dark details in low-light conditions, as well as occasional unwanted palm touches registering on the edges of the screen.

During its product showcase event, Google marketed the displays on the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro with its new "Actua" branding. We suppose one could say that the new branding as well as the spec bump resulted in ideal outcomes for the new Pixel devices, at least as far as screen quality goes.

Qualcomm to Lay Off Over 1,200 Employees

If there's anything we've learned in the past couple of years, it's that even the largest tech companies aren't immune to making big, cost-cutting adjustments which unfortunately results in the loss of livelihood. As such, Qualcomm recently announced that it was axing over 1,200 employees due to considerable market slowdowns, amounting to around 2.5% of its work force.

More specifically, 1,064 personnel from the company's San Diego headquarters will be terminated, while 194 more from the Santa Clara offices will be let go. Based on information available online, employees will vacate their posts around mid-December, which will then be followed by restructuring.

As per a statement made by the company to the press:

"Given the continued uncertainty in the macroeconomic and demand environment, we expect to take additional restructuring actions to enable continued investments in key growth and diversification opportunities.

While we are in the process of developing our plans, we currently expect these actions to consist largely of workforce reductions, and in connection with any such actions we would expect to incur significant additional restructuring charges, a substantial portion of which we expect to incur in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2023. We currently anticipate these additional actions to be substantially completed in the first half of fiscal 2024."

Qualcomm is the latest in a long line of companies who have laid off a sizeable number of employees - this list includes big names such as Google, Spotify, Roku, Meta, and Twitter.

Pixel 8 Pro's Face Unlock might not be as secure as you think

Facial recognition on our smartphones aren't new. We've seen it introduced many years ago, although it was not as robust compared to what is available now. In fact, with the new Pixel 8 Pro smartphones, Google introduced an upgraded facial recognition system (Face Unlock) that they claim meets Android's Class 3 requirements.

This means that it is secure enough where it can be used for payment authentications and logging into apps, something that wasn't available on the Pixel 7. But it turns out that maybe it still isn't quite as secure as we would have liked.

This is because according to a post on Reddit, they are claiming that their Pixel 8 Pro was unlocked using Face Unlock by their brother. In Google's defense, facial recognition systems aren't 100% foolproof. Even Apple's Face ID which uses infrared scanning technology was found to be vulnerable in some rare instances.

The poster does note that they share similar facial features as their brother, but even then as long as they aren't identical twins, it shouldn't have been unlocked anyway. That being said, this is the first we're hearing about the Face Unlock feature being bypassed this way. We're not sure if this is an isolated issue or if others have experienced something similar.

Either way, if you're concerned about this, then maybe you could stick to fingerprint unlocking or using a PIN code on your phone instead.

Xiaomi 14 series could be claiming an industry first

Whenever Qualcomm announces their next-gen chipsets, they do it towards the end of the year and the following year is when we start seeing phones that use these chipsets, but that could change this year.

Qualcomm has moved up the date of its Snapdragon Summit to late October, and now if the rumors are to be believed, Xiaomi could be the first smartphone maker to launch a flagship phone that will use Qualcomm's upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset.

The company is rumored to launch their Xiaomi 14 series on the 27th of October, a day after the Snapdragon Summit, and the launch is said to consist of the base Xiaomi 14 and the more expensive and potentially more powerful and feature-rich Xiaomi 14 Pro. The rumors claim that there might be an "Ultra" variant in the works but that might only launch later.

It is unclear what we can expect from the new phones apart from the use of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, but it is rumored to come with a new design but it will still maintain the Leica-branded cameras as part of Xiaomi's ongoing partnership with the legendary German camera maker.

Take this with a grain of salt for now, but if the 27th of October date holds true, we won't have to wait much longer for the official details.

No surprises as the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 outperforms the Exynos 2400 in benchmarks

One of the reasons why some might be a bit apprehensive at the idea of Samsung bringing back the Exynos chipset for its Galaxy S24 smartphones next year is because over the years, it has been found that the Exynos chipset tends to underperform compared to Qualcomm's chipsets.

Unfortunately, it looks like the upcoming Exynos 2400 is no different. Based on benchmarks found on Geekbench's website for the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and the Exynos 2400, it looks like Qualcomm's chipset is once again pulling ahead of the Exynos in their performance scores.

The benchmarks revealed that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 scored 2,234 in single-core performance and 6,807 in multi-core performance, whereas the Exynos 2400 scored 2,067 and 6,520 respectively. The gap isn't that big in the multi-core side of things, but it is more obvious in single-core.

It is unclear how this difference will translate in real-life use of the phones. It is possible that users won't be able to tell the difference in performance for day-to-day tasks like browsing the web, chatting, sending emails, watching videos, and playing music, but it might become a bit more obvious when more intensive applications are being used, like gaming, or photo or video editing apps.

That being said, if you are concerned about the differences, you might want to consider the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra which is rumored to use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 across all regions it will be sold in.

Google's eSIM transfer tool makes setting up your brand new Pixel 8 a breeze

In some parts of the world, eSIMs are a bit bothersome because of the way some carriers have chosen to set it up, where users will need to visit a carrier's store in-person and request a QR code to get an eSIM or to install the eSIM on a new device.

The good news for Pixel 8 owners is that the process will be a lot simpler as Google has finally rolled out its brand new eSIM transfer tool. With this new feature, whenever you're setting up your Pixel 8 smartphone, you will have the option of transferring the eSIM profile from your previous Pixel phone onto the new Pixel 8.

This is according to a post on X by Mishaal Rahman who revealed that the tool is now live. The tool will also give users the ability to convert a physical SIM into an eSIM profile, meaning that if your old phone still uses a physical SIM but you want to make the switch to an eSIM, this tool will make your life a lot easier.

Granted, most of us only change our smartphones every couple of years, if not longer, so this isn't something we need to do every few months. At the same time, making the setup process a lot faster isn't necessarily a bad thing either. Google isn't the first to introduce this feature to their phones as Samsung had previously introduced a similar tool in the past, but it's good to see more handset makers are jumping on board.
