iPad3

Well, We have plenty of rumors for the Apple Next-gen iPad aka iPad 3 already, but can we confirm any of them? Well yes, The Most Expected feature for the iPad 3 is the Retina display for its 9.7-inch screen, It will need to have very High-resolution to match the pixel density about 2048 x 1536 (even Higher than HD 1920 x 1080).

This feature will surely boost the iPad 3 sales and Apple will concentrate on this Feature on all the upcoming iPad 3 commercials.

iPad3

If you take a look on the leaked photo of some iPad 3 components (Photo above). In this photo you will find a three wide ribbon cables as opposed to the two that the previous models had. This extra cable is more than likely in place to carry additional screen-data to the high resolution display. If the iPad 3 carry a Retina display at the massive 2048 x 1536 pixels resolution, the data transfer of three cables will be needed for sure.

Macbook Air 4 sizes

Apple will completely revamp its MacBook Pro line of notebooks this year, according to sources familiar with the company plans for 2012. The new MacBook Pros are expected to feature an ultra-thin unibody design modeled after the MacBook Air and get a spec boost to Intel next-gen Ivy Bridge chips.

Macbook Pro

Citing a source familiar with the new MacBook Pro design, AppleInsider reveals that the new Air-like MacBook Pros will be phased in over the course of this year. The revamped version of the more popular 15-inch model will be introduced first, followed by the 17-inch model later.

This will include new, ultra-thin unibody enclosures that jettison yesteryear technologies like optical disk drives and traditional hard drives in favor of models with lightweight chassis that employ flash-memory based solid-state drives, instant-on capabilities, extended battery life, and rely on digital distribution for software and media.

"They are all going to look like MacBook Airs," one person familiar with the new MacBook Pro designs told AppleInsider. Meanwhile, existing MacBook Pro designs are expected to be phased out over the course of the year.

Chrome 18 BETA

Google has just updated Chrome Beta to version 18 after Chrome 17 gone final yesterday. Its headline new feature is improved 2D graphics performance in HTML5 and a software rasterizer to enable older machines to display content rendered using newer unsupported technologies (by these old Machines) such as WebGL.

Chrome 18 Beta also sees improvements to the PDF plug-in and Printing, plus fixes a number of issues such as full-screen performance under Windows and startup issues in Red Hat Enterprise 6.

Most Windows and Mac users should start to see major performance improvements from certain web apps and websites thanks to support for GPU-accelerated rendering for 2D Canvas content. Because of the wide variety of hardware configurations out there, the Chromium development team has taken a conservative approach to this new technology, enabling just a few features and keen to hear feedback from anyone who encounters performance issues as a result of the tweaks. To see what new features are supported by your system, type chrome://gpu/ into the URL bar.

Megaupload

Believe it or not, it was and is possible to track the traffic that MegaUpload and the rest of the piracy-laden file-sharing groups out there have compared to the rest of the web. In One hour following the January 19th raid of MegaUpload the Global entirety of the Internet lost between 2-3 precent of its total volume in traffic.

This first statistic comes from a report from DeepField Networks called File Sharing in the Post MegaUpload Era. This same study had MegaUpload downloads representing no less than 30-40% of all file sharing on the internet. As MegaUpload own MegaVideo and the other biggest sharer of files after that, Filesonic, both shuttered their doors effectively on January 18th, their percentages (34.1% for Mega and 19.1% for Filesonic) were distributed amongst the rest of the next biggest hosts. According again to DeepField, "MegaUpload sprawled over more than 1000 servers and 25 petabytes of data in Carpathia facilities." That is an intense amount of copies of Skyrim, that iss for sure.

filesharing jan18

On the 19th of January it was Putlocker up top with nearly 30% of all the file sharing on the web with several services next in line like MediaFire and NovaMov. Both the graphics you see above and below come from DeepField.

Wikipedia

On the 18th,January 2012 in light of the proposed SOPA legislation, Wikipedia blacked itself out for a whole day. This meant visitors to the site got only an anti-SOPA message and an explanation of why the site was therefore inaccessible.

However, on the same day Wikipedia also launched their official Android application, Here is a Review on the App and the Download link Below it!

First Impressions

The first thing WE noticed about the official Wikipedia app was its speed. There is very little delay when it first loads up, and clicking highlighted links in any article gives you a very speedy return.

On the other hand, oddly, the front page "featured article" is hunched together, without any spaces for new paragraphs rather, just a wall of dense text. Furthermore, the text is really quite small. You can increase the size; there are ‘Smaller’, ‘Normal’ and ‘Larger’ to choose from in the settings menu, but even the large size is going to still cause problems if your eyesight is not very good.

Relatively small font size

Relatively small font size

Article Viewing

If you’re unfamiliar with the other Wikipedia apps, articles are usually presented with the introduction and initial paragraphs showing, and subheadings are subsequently hidden and you need to press their tab to open them. This usually makes for easier reading, as you can jump straight to where you want to look. One of the things I’ve historically used Wikipedia for is tracing the careers of actors, and this interface makes it easy to jump straight to a filmography.

Subheadings help with navigation

Subheadings help with navigation

As you can see above, the official Wikipedia app also supports this format very user friendly. You can also see that the text isn’t hunched and is far easier to read; although it should be noted the text size here is set to ‘Larger’.

One thing I felt a little let down by is that, if you make a spelling error while searching, the app doesn’t suggest the correct one. So, if you search for ‘Scarlett Johannsson’, you just get a error message. Compare this to the actual website, which will make a suggestion with the correct spelling.

Fails to make a suggestion if spelling is incorrect

Menu

Opening the menu on any page gives you an assortment of features. You can change the language you are reading in; the app supports 32 different languages. You can also search for Wikipedia articles based on items ‘Nearby’ for example, schools and local landmarks often come up on a map which you can then select from.

Nearby feature

Nearby feature

Also in the menu you’ll find your viewed article history. Additionally you can save a page and view your saved pages, which is like creating bookmarks in a browser. Then you have a ‘More’ tab which provides the options to share, forward, select text, view the About page and change the settings. The settings themselves are quite minimal: just language and font size.

Comparison: Wapedia

Crucially, it’s worth comparing Wikipedia with the 3rd party clients which have been available for some time already. Most notable of these in my experience has been Wapedia from developers Taptu. Wapedia is without doubt an extremely feature-rich app which, like Wikipedia, lets you save pages. It’s also worth noting that both apps include the often brilliant photographs from the main Wikipedia website.

Rich interface, pictures look great

Rich interface, pictures looks great

However, Wapedia then goes above and beyond by providing access to a variety of community-created ‘wiki’s’. These include zones of information related to the media, film, books, entertainment, humour, games, lifestyle, technology, sports, health, religion and science. So, if you’re looking for a wiki on tennis or even zombies, there’s plenty of information to be found. This is not only incredibly rich and diverse, but it’s simple to access and regularly updated.

The problem then for Wikipedia is identifying how it can be superior. I did notice a slightly faster response from the official app over Wapedia, but this was generally very slight. Wapedia also offers customisations which include a better variety of text size and a white or black theme in addition to a widget. There’s just no getting away from the fact that, despite being the official Wikipedia app and being very quick, the likes of Wapedia are arguably some way ahead in terms of usability and functionality.

Google Wallet

There is a HUGE security vulnerability in Google Wallet that effects all users regardless of if they are rooted or not. The security flaw is painfully easy to do and requires no extra software nor does it require root.

All a person who wants to access your Google Wallet has to do is go into the application settings menu and clear the data for the Google Wallet app. After doing that your Google Wallet app will be reset and will prompt for you to set a new pin the next time you open it.

Wallet

The problem here is that since Google Wallet is tied to the device itself and not tied to your Google account, that once they set the new pin and log into the app, when they add the Google prepaid card it will add the card that is tied to that device. In other words, they would be able to add your card and have full access to your funds.

This vulnerability is particularly bad as it does not require root or an other software in order to gain access to your Google Wallet. All a person needs to be able to do this is access to your phone and within 1-2 minutes they will have complete access to your Google Wallet account.

Chrome for Android

Google recently launched Chrome for Android Beta for Android smartphones and tablets running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The new mobile browser includes many features that make Chrome so popular on the PC including speed, simple design, bookmark and open tabs sync, and autocomplete suggestions. But Google mobile Chrome is not all good news, there are also a few letdowns for people who love Adobe Flash, Chrome extensions or are part of the 99 percent.

No Flash Support!
Even though Android supports the mobile version of Flash Player, Chrome for Android did not ship with Adobe plug-in unlike its desktop counterpart. Shortly after the new mobile browser was released, Adobe said it would not be supporting Chrome for Android. Adobe in November announced it would no longer be developing Flash Player for mobile devices at all and would instead focus on pushing HTML 5 standards for mobile browsers.

Support Android ICS 4.0 only!
Chrome for Android is currently only available for Android 4.0. That effectively means you can only get it if you own a Galaxy Nexus, Nexus S, Motorola Xoom or Asus Transformer Prime. Ice Cream Sandwich updates to Gingerbread and Honeycomb devices are slated for rollout later this year.

Megaphone

As operators around the world look to curb people data usage by rolling out confusing pricing plans or just simply raising their rates, things are going a little bit differently in Russia. MegaFon, the third largest operator in Russia, recently held a contest whereby the person who could use the most amount of data would be awarded with a 150,000 ruble ($5,000) vacation overseas, the winner was someone who managed to pull 419 GB in a single week.

With some calculations, that is a constant download rate of 5.7 megabits per second. Not bad for a network that uses 21 Mbps HSPA+ technology, which is arguably inferior to anything offered in America, but on par with what is available in most of Europe. Some countries have 42 Mbps HSPA+ networks, but that technology is not widely deployed yet.

Women Dig Gadgets too

The truth of the matter is, men have spent more money on consumer electronics in the past and, as a result, women have unfortunately been left with ads targeted towards men or pink versions of everything. But no more.

According to a study out of the CEA, the same folks that brought you that over-sized week of madness called CES, more and more women are showing an interest in consumer electronics than they were in the past.

HTC Rhyme

Specifically, eight in ten women expressed an interest in gadgets, up 10 percentage points from the same time in 2007. Of those women, 41 percent said they were "very interested" in consumer electronics. But it gets more interesting than that.

And perhaps the most important thing we can take away from this study comes out of the mouth of CEA manager of strategic research Jessica Boothe:

"Forget pink. Women don't want to be catered to with ultra-feminine looking products; they simply prefer lightweight devices that can fit smaller hands and smaller body frames. Women play many roles, like mother, spouse and career women, and CE products that can perform many functions are a necessity."

The DROID RAZR MAXX is obviously selling like hot cupcakes these days with Verizon Wireless at one point listing the popular devices as out of stock.

However, the carrier and Motorola must have been working round the clock to fix this "injustice" and now the DROID RAZR MAXX is back with a small label that says "Will ship by 2/9." That is two days from now, so if you want the thicker version of the RAZR, you may still be able to get it by weekend or, worse case scenario, on Monday.

LG X3

LG new ICS Android phone, the X3, likely to be shown off at Mobile World Congress later this month. That device and one more are probably the source of a pair of certification filings in the Universal Plug and Play database, a set of standards for wired and wireless networking. The phones in question are the "LG-P880" and the "LG-P700". The former is of the most interest to spec hounds, and it probably the model number for the X3.

There is not a lot of information on either phone available, but a few nuggets can be found. Digging around in the GSM filing for the P880 reveals a resolution of 1280x720p and the P700 has a 640×480 resolution found mostly in second-generation Android phones. Oddly, the P700 is listed as an "ICS SmartPhone", not the P880.'

Apple iPad launch in China

China Daily reports that Proview Shenzhen Technology, a Chinese company based in the city Shenzhen, has pointed the finger at Apple over the iPad.

"We ask the court to stop selling and marketing for Apple iPad in China. We also demand an apology," Proview Technology attorney Xie Xianghui told China Daily.

Both companies claim "iPad" as a trademark, but Proview Shenzhen Technology says it has held the trademark since 2000 or 2001 and is asking for a cessation of iPad sales in China due to patent infringement as well as a fine for damages.

The case is set to come before a district court in Shanghai this month. A similar suit in Beijing is asking for a fine of around $38 million, or 240 million yuan. Late last year, Apple lost a suit wherein it claimed patent infringement on the Chinese company part.

FB Mobile App

Now that Facebook has filed for an IPO, we knew it might lead to some changes for the world largest social network. Well, a new report from the Financial Times reports that we could start to see some advertising on its mobile products in the coming weeks.

FB Tablet App

The report suggests that advertising on mobile Facebook will be different than on the web, as it will primarily concentrate on promotional "featured stories" within your news feed. These should be clearly identified but you just know that people are going to freak out whenever Facebook does anything. While I don't like more ads in my life, I understand why this has to happen.

Facebook listed mobile as one of its biggest risks because it currently does not generate any significant revenue from its apps or mobile web products, VentureBeat points out. This has all been by design, as Facebook was looking for scale on the mobile side before generating money. It has done quite well on that front, as it currently has more than 425 million mobile users.

Apple refusal to put its Siri voice control system on the iPhone 4 is not a shameless play to persuade users to upgrade to the 4S, it is suggested, but a limitation of the Apple A5 chip found inside the newest iOS smartphone. The A5, Linley Group analyst Linley Gwennap says, was always too large simply to accommodate two Cortex A9 CPUs and a GPU, CNET reports; the extra bulk is to house an on-chip noise-reduction system sourced from specialists Audience, which revealed its deal with Apple last month.

siri

"Apple has integrated our processor IP in certain of its mobile phones" Audience confirmed in its IPO documentation last month. Based on the company EarSmart technology, it allows phones to use effective background noise cancellation even when the microphone is held at arm reach, rather than when it is near the user mouth.

Audience does not detail its "custom processor for Apple" but the volume inclusion timescale Q4 of 2011 fits in with the launch of the iPhone 4S. EarSmart models the human brain, using two microphones and custom DSP to filter out background sound.

Android@Home

Approximately 252 homes are in a trial run this month with a brand new Google Entertainment Device which very well may be the project thus far known as Android@Home. This project has been tipped by the FCC where a collection of pre-run devices have been approved for testing, each of them working with Wi-fi and/or Bluetooth to connect the home. This filing was made this December and is only popping up now, Google making no official word on it because it is a big secret but chances are, it is the Android@Home Hub.

Android@home

The FCC filing itself has a tiny bit of information on what the project will contain, FCC says:

"Google is developing an entertainment device that requires testing outside the laboratory environment. The device is in the prototyping phase and will be modified prior to final compliance testing... Users will connect their device to home WiFi networks and use Bluetooth to connect to other home electronics equipment. This line of testing will reveal real world engineering issues and reliability of networks. The device utilizes a standard WiFi/Bluetooth module, and the planned testing is not directed at evaluating the radio frequency characteristics of the module (which are known), but rather at the throughput and stability of the home WiFi networks that will support the device, as well as the basic functionality of the device. From this testing we hope to modify the design in order to maximize product robustness and user experience. Utilizing the requested number of units will allow testing of real world network performance and its impact on applications running on the device, so that any problems can be discovered and addressed promptly."

The company which specializes in providing real-time crash reports for mobile apps evaluated reports over a period of one month and found that iOS apps crash quite a lot more than their Android counterparts.

Report

In the first of the three quartiles we got data for, iOS apps crashed after 0.51% of all launches, whereas Android apps only crashed in 0.15%. In the second quartile the picture is similar with iOS apps crashing in 1.47% of the cases, whereas Android apps did so 0.73% of the time. Things are much closer in the third quartile 2.97% crashes for Android vs 3.66% for iOS.

iOS and Android All versions

Crittercism even gave us a detailed breakdown of the most problematic releases by OS. As it turns out, iOS 5.0.1 generates more than a third of all iOS crashes 33.93%, while iOS 4.3.5 is the second most problematic with 10.62%. That sounds quite believable as these two software versions are the two latest releases of iOS4 and iOS5.

Microsoft has some major changes in store for Windows Phone 8, we have learned, which is the version of the platform currently being referred to by codename Apollo. Thanks to a video hosted by senior vice president and Windows Phone manager Joe Belfiore at Nokia, a number of WP8 features and themes have now been revealed.

Hardware changes

According to Belfiore, the overarching theme with regards to the Windows Phone 8 hardware ecosystem will be scale and choice. Specifically, Apollo will add support for multicore processors, new screen resolutions, and removable microSD card storage. It is clear that Microsoft is addressing one of the platform pain points, which is a perceived inability to compete in spec sheet comparisons with the iPhone and Android-based devices.

NFC

NFC radios will also be supported, with Belfiore placing specific emphasis on 8's push into contactless payments. The "Wallet experience," as he calls it, will have the capability to be carrier-branded and controlled, either by a secure element on the SIM card or utilizing hardware in the phone itself. In addition, tap-to-share capabilities will reportedly work across multiple platforms, allowing desktops, laptops, tablets, and phones to all share content.

Windows 8 integration

Windows Phone 8 will not just share a UI with the next-generation desktop and tablet OS, apparently: it will use many of the same components as Windows 8, allowing developers to "reuse by far most of their code" when porting an app from desktop to phone, according to Belfiore. He specifically mentions the kernel, networking stacks, security, and multimedia support as areas of heavy overlap.

Moreover, Windows Phone 8 will reportedly scrap integration with the desktop Zune client in favor of a syncing relationship with a dedicated companion application. In other words, Microsoft is bringing back a richer version of ActiveSync after letting that program die out for the most part.

We have some good news for owners of the HTC Sensation smartphone. A press release has been published that says the HTC Sensation will get the official Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update soon. HTC does not give a specific date that the update will come, simply saying it will come out OTA soon. HTC also dropped information on a new version of the Sensation that is coming to the Netherlands.

The new version of the HTC Sensation will be identical hardware wise to the existing version and the difference will be that the new phone comes in an ice white color. That ice white color looks more like silver to me. The HTC press release says that the phone will land on March 1 in the Netherlands and will already be running Android 4.0 when it hits. There is no word on an official launch date in other countries.

Galaxy S II PLUS

A device identifying itself as "Galaxy S 2+" showed up in the online test results of benchmark An3DBenchXL. The benchmark results offer the following info about the device: OS version 2.3.4, screen resolution 480x800 and CPU clock 1.5GHz.

Screenshot

The regular Galaxy S II has a 1.2GHz dual-core processor and so does the regular Galaxy Nexus. But clues to an alleged upgrade of the Galaxy Nexus with a 1.5GHz processor and a new GPU showed up a couple of days ago.

Quite a coincidence, but a Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket i727, for example, more or less matches the specs 1.5GHz CPU, Android Gingerbread and WVGA screen.

BlackBerry London is a name of the Upcoming Blackberry Next-Generation smartphone, Now we have an image of this upcoming smartphone based on RIM new BlackBerry 10 platform.

The image shows the device in black, and looks like a slide from a presentation. The front of the device looks similar to the last picture we saw of the phone but has some differences. It is completely black, but that could just be an alternate shade. What more important is that the beveled edges are missing, replaced by rounded corners and the large BlackBerry logo on the bottom is now a bit smaller and directly below the display.

An onlooker watches the three mysterious figures fly around New York

New Yorkers were left to ponder their sanity the other day as three mysterious figures flew silently through the sky seemingly unaided.

Truth be told, the occurrences that featured over the New York skyline were not of a supernatural nature, but rather to promote a movie about happenings of a supernatural nature. 20th Century Fox hired ad firm Thinkmodo to come up with a unique way to market their latest Sci Fi flick, "Chronicle".

The supernatural occurrence took place not far from locales such as the Statue of Liberty as well as other well known areas around Manhattan, but how and why?

Younghee Lee

Apple not only makes fantastic products, it also created an aura around its brand that many marketing executives would love to duplicate. One such executive is Younghee Lee of Samsung. Speaking with AllThingsD, Lee said she is trying to figure out how she (and Samsung) can "engage with consumers from the bottom of their heart, and not just be a big and functional and rational and reasonable brand." Though Lee did not say it, she wants customers to love Samsung like they love Apple.

One of Samsung first forays into becoming a recognizable and well-loved brand is its recent advertising push in the US. The ongoing video series features Samsung users showing off their handsets to iPhone owners. As expected, the iPhone is not as fast nor as big as the phones from the Korean company. The series is light-hearted and has been well-received by everyone except maybe Apple fans.

Apple Factories Foxconn

Apple CEO Tim Cook outrage at allegations the company knowingly overlooked labor mistreatment among its suppliers may have satisfied some, but that has not stopped an online petition of near 150,000 Apple fans demanding the company take further steps in protecting workers. Accruing nearly 150,000 signatures within 48 hours, the campaign was started by Mark Shields on Change.org and demands greater transparency on suppliers found to have committed rights violations.

It also suggests that "Apple release a worker protection strategy for new product releases, which are the instances when injuries and suicides typically spike because of the incredible pressure to meet quotas timed to releases."

"Here is the thing: you are Apple. You are supposed to think different. I want to continue to use and love the products you make, because they are changing the world, and have already changed my life" Shields wrote. "But I also want to know that when I buy products from you, it is not at the cost of horrible human suffering."

Galaxy Nexus

NenaMark 2 is a popular Android benchmark for 3D performance and it offers an online database of results. Interestingly, a Samsung Galaxy Nexus with an updated GPU popped up in the results.

The Galaxy Nexus uses a TI OMAP 4460 chipset, which packs a PowerVR SGX540 GPU. That's the same GPU Samsung used in the original Galaxy S. The interesting benchmark result (submitted anonymously) however claims it ran on PowerVR SGX544. It is used in the TI OMAP 4470 chipset, which suggest that the change is due to an upgraded chipset.

Anyway, the GPU scored 39.8fps, while the regular Galaxy Nexus got 24fps when we tested it. Which is what you would expect as the SGX544 offers double the raw performance of the SGX540 (they are both clocked at 384MHz in their respective chipsets).

Intel Core i5

Intel has just unveiled seven new members of its Sandy Bridge family of CPUs. We got three quad-core desktop processors of the Core i5 variety and four Celeron CPUs meant for use in mobile devices.

The first and most powerful of the new processors is Core i5-2550K, which is an unlocked-multiplier CPU with a stock clock speed of 100MHz higher than the i5-2500K. The i5-2550K runs at 3.4GHz, with frequencies of up to 3.8GHz possible with the Turbo boost.

The other two new i5 processors are 2450P and 2380P and they run at 3.2 GHz and 3.1 GHz, respectively. The P here stands for GPU-less, as those come without the built-in Intel HD 3000 graphics.
