Galaxy Player

Samsung might have decided that it makes sense to take the 5.8" Galaxy Player, and turn it into a phone. Granted, the resolution of said multimedia device is just qHD, and it is on the huge size.

Samsung Galaxy Player

Galaxy GT-I9152 Fonblet is the codename of this Player reincarnation, and before you dismiss the name as unlikely to happen, remember that Samsung actually filed a trademark for the Fonblet moniker last year, so it has every chance to become reality.

fliboard

In the Google Play Store, there is an update for Flipboard that helps prevent accidental page flipping. Additionally, the update also exterminates some bugs that afflicted the app. But more importantly, for those with Android 4.2, it supports the Daydream feature for the OS build.

flipbaord

Daydream is a screensaver that turns on when the phone is charging or docked. Users can choose between seeing the clock, changing colors, photos or headlines from Google Currents. While the latter might sound interesting, it is not interactive which means while headlines appear before your eyes, you cannot touch on one to open a news story. And this is where Flipboard's update comes in.

ubuntu Phone OS

Ubuntu OS for phones was formally announced just last week, and won't be available on the market until early 2014. Test images that have been promised, to allow developers and various other technophiles to play around with the platform, won't be made available until late in February.

Great work is definitely being done on the platform, and it seems that Ubuntu for phones has already gotten a performance update.

ubuntu Phone OS

The video comes from Mika Meskanen, an Ubuntu interaction designer, showing off two devices one running the original build of Ubuntu for phones and the other running the new update. One of the things that we had all noticed from the early hands-on with Ubuntu for phones was that there was some lag and stutters in the UI when scrolling and such. From the new video, it seems those issues have been smoothed out.

Information regarding actual devices has been scarce to this point, but we now know that at least one major manufacturer is serious about Firefox OS ZTE.

verizon

Verizon Communications Chairman and CEO Lowell McAdams sat down with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to discuss football and entertainment the other day at CES 2013 in Las Vegas. Both talked about increasing the technology available to those attending a game, and since McAdams no longer is in charge of just wireless, the talk also covered the ways that those watching at home over cable could enjoy more interactive options.

verizon

But the highlight of the discussion was when McAdams revealed that Big Red is seeking to broadcast the Super Bowl to Verizon connected handsets over its 4G LTE network. Last year, Verizon streamed the game to its customers through the NFL Mobile app, but a broadcast would offer a more stable view of the game and would eliminate the buffering that takes away from the experience. McAdams said that a broadcast of the Super Bowl could take place as soon as the 2014 game.

The 2014 Super Bowl will be held at Met Life Stadium in New Jersey Next year.

Samsung ces youm

Last year, when we saw the Samsung's flexible OLED displays under the brand "YOUM" we've been waiting for an official reveal of actual products featuring this technology. Today at the CES 2013, Samsung's executives has officially showed off some live prototype devices with flexible panels during the CES keynote, using YOUM panels and plastic, these devices can bend easily and become unbreakable.

ces youm

youm

One of the possible uses for a flexible display panel is on a tablet that can be folded in half, thus becoming a smartphone that one can fit in their pocket. As you can see on the Photo below... This device is a concept of a future YOUM GALAXY smartphone (in the left) and future YOUM GALAXY Tab (in the right).

Galaxy YOUM

Another way to take advantage of this technology is to have a smartphone with a screen extending to the sides where notifications can be displayed even when the handset is lying down on a flat surface.

youm

Of course, these are merely possibilities rather than practical real-world applications of the Youm flexible screens. But since we know that this innovative tech is almost ready for prime time, it will be interesting to see what kind of smartphones and tablets Samsung and other OEMs might implement bendable screens in.

Exynos Octa

Samsung has just Officially announced the 8-Cores processor Exynos 5 Octa, will be on upcoming Samsung's products during this year.

The latest member of the 5-series has been done with frugality/performance ratio in mind, as the chief of Samsung Electronics Stephen Woo admitted that the task to up performance while decreasing power consumption has been the one bothering him, and keeping him awake at night.

Octa

With Exynos 5 Octa, Samsung thinks it has cracked that code, and demonstrated on stage how you can search for restaurants and watch an HD movie at the same time, as well as some 3D gaming with Need for Speed: Most Wanted chosen as the demo... all this without a single lag.

"Level of pure processing power, never seen before in mobile devices and more detailed damage to cards, then ever before" - Samsung Exec.

Samsung's peeps said that the new Exynos has twice the graphics performance of anything currently on the market, but it is also very frugal, for up to 70% power savings. It's built around ARM's big.LITTLE concept, with a mix of frugal Cortex-A7 cores for the mundane tasks, and Cortex-A15 ones for the heavy lifting.

Samsung will present an 8-core Octa Core chip of Cortex A15 and Cortex A7 CPU cores in a "Big.Little" configuration at the CES 2013 event today. "Big.Little" architecture combines very low-power cores like Cortex A7 with very high-performance cores like Cortex A15, for a well optimized mobile experience and balanced battery life.

First 8 Core Mobile Processor

It's possible that for the time being we'll only see a chip that contains 2 clusters of dual core CPU's for smartphones (2 A15+2 A7), although there's no rumor of this chip existing yet, but it seems like the natural progression for Samsung Exynos 5 Dual that currently lacks the A7 parts.

This would be the first 8-cores mobile processor in the markets, showing us the future after the Quad-core, let's wait and see if this Exynos beast will beat the Nvidia Tegra 4 with the 72 GPU cores.

The Xperia ZL is a smartphone pretty similar to the Xperia Z, save for the lack of IP57 certification and the slightly different design. The Xperia ZL has its front camera placed in the bottom right corner of the front panel, has a tad smaller footprint and is slightly lighter than the Xperia Z.

The rest is pretty much the same the 5" 1080p display, the Snapdragon S4 Pro chipset, the 13MP camera, the connectivity department, etc. Don't worry, the Xperia ZL also sports a microSD slot.

samsung

Samsung financial report for the Q4,2012 (October - November - December) isn't officially announced yet, but has been leaked. If the leak is correct, Samsung could have made a crazy $8 Billion in profits in Q4 of 2012, $5.5 Billion are from Mobile products.

The official numbers are expected near the end of the month, but early reports say that Samsung will be announcing Q4 operating profits that are up 65% compared to last year at 8.7 trillion. That would mark a new record hight, 7% better than the previous record of 8.1 trillion won in July-September.

Galaxy S IV

We've seen Samsung GT-I9500 device recently in many benchmark results and software development kits. From the model number we can indicate its a high-end device from the "Galaxy S" family.

We still not sure if the device is the rumored Galaxy S IV with Android 4.2.1 or a TIZEN smartphone, as Samsung plans on moving to TIZEN OS during this year. Now it's on the Samsung's Official website...

I9500

Today, The Samsung GT-I9500X has been spotted on the company's software download page, probably entered into the database early by an error and its still there. Unfortunately, the website does not reveal anything on the this Smartphone, the "X" indicates that the device will have more than one version (e.g. I9500G, I9500P... etc).

There is one more thing unlike most past shows, this upcoming one isn't expected to bring some hot sequels or smashing new IPs to Xbox 360. Halo 4 is out, Gears of War and Mass Effect Trilogies are over, and there are just few announced games that seems to deserve the gamers' attention. Oh, and none of them is an Xbox 360 exclusive. A new Xbox should definitely be on the cards then.

While sales of the U.S. version, HTC DROID DNA for verizon are still unknown, Verizon has recently started an advertising campaign for the phone, featuring a television commercial now in rotation on prime-time television and during televised sporting events.

volte

The dream of quite a few cellphones nerds is to finally get rid of the per minute mobile plans, or the per text plans, and just have a pipe of data streaming to your hand. One big piece to that puzzle is voice-over-IP (VoIP) or voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) as it has become known since everyone wants to brand everything with LTE these days.

The next generation of LTE chips from ST-Ericsson could help push this agenda because they are expected to support VoLTE and use 50% less power than current chips.

VoLTE

LTE chips have gotten quite a bit more power efficient since they first came out, but attempting VoLTE would still drain your battery pretty quickly, which would make the dream Google Wireless carrier be a bust from the start. But, make the next generation 50% more efficient and that opens up some possibilities, especially given that MetroPCS already has VoLTE live in select markets, and Verizon is planning to begin rolling out VoLTE this year in order to have it widely available by 2014.

Google TV

Who owns a Google TV ? Google has proven itself to be a company that knows when to cut its losses with a product, so that alone makes us feel like Google thinks the set-top box war is one that it can win. Google announced that it will be showing off more Google TV boxes at CES this year, and will be pushing functionality like voice command and the new PrimeTime guide.

Year by year Google TV looks cooler and cooler with the Android UI, but every year it has the same problem as well. There is one big problem with the idea that Google has: cable providers have absolutely no interest in supporting the product.

The new Google TVs are planned to come from traditional hardware partners LG, Visio, and Sony, as well as new partners Asus, Hisense, TCL and others. In addition to pushing the voice command features, there is also a new PrimeTime guide. Check out the Demo Below!

android logo

Android's mascot, known as Bugdroid (little green roboto above), has become instantly recognizable in the mobile world and it has already gone several transformations to match the dessert a given Android version is named after.

DandDroid

This loopy-looking robot were created by Dan Morrill, who worked in developer relations, when he decided that slides for a presentation to Google's dev team needed eye candy. These were never used officially, but apparently they lived long enough to pick up a nickname "Dandroids". In the End, Google went with the Bugdroid design by Irina Blo.

J = Jelly Bean

Mr. Morrill isn't done with the Android trivia. The second internal developer launch of Android was called R2-D2, short for "Release To Developers 2". Due to trademark considerations, Android's naming scheme moved on to desserts, which was an idea by Ryan PC Gibson, starting from the letter "C = Cupcake" and moving on in an alphabetically order.

ubuntu

Canonical founder Mark Shuttleworth, said that the work to put Ubuntu on phones and tablets should be done in time for the release of Ubuntu 14.04 in April 2014. In the announcement today, Shuttleworth said that the Ubuntu Phone OS had been designed from the ground up to offer a "crisper, sharper" experience on low-end phones.

He expects these low-end phones to drive adoption, much like Ubuntu's Linux-based cousin, Android. Ubuntu will have a "lean mode" which would run well on a device with an A9 ARM processor and 1GB RAM, and a "heavy mode" for high-end hardware. Shuttleworth says that Ubuntu will also target emerging markets by offering a "less complex" user experience than the competition.

ubuntu

In the demo showing off the phone (Watch it below), Shuttleworth showed how that "less complex" experience may look. For instance, an Ubuntu phone won't have a lock screen, but rather a "welcome screen" which will be personally tailored to you and the information you want. Ubuntu will also supposedly offer more screen space for apps than other platforms.

Apple iOS6

When Steve Jobs first Introduced the iPhone in 2007, he said "Who needs a stylus ?... you gonna use your fingers". Well, Today Apple received a patent for a stylus technology called the "Active Stylus".

The "Active Stylus" is a stylus that does more than just help you input a touch on a screen. Your regular everyday stylus works by blocking electric lines. Instead of being passive, like the current stylus, Apple's tool would have the capability to create its own electronic field and couple signals with the main device.

active stylus

This could increase the speed and accuracy of the stylus and eliminate the lag that some S Pen users have complained about. Despite the lag, the S Pen has become extremely popular, so much so that speculation has Samsung including it with the Samsung Galaxy S IV. And we would say that the popularity of the S Pen comes from its ability to be more like a marker or a crayon rather than a touch input like Steve Jobs was thinking about when he dissed the stylus in 2007.

do not disturb

The Do Not Disturb mode introduced for the first time with Apple's latest iOS 6 appears to have a serious bug. Since the turn of the year, it stopped functioning as promised and prevented quite a lot of people from getting their calls and messages.

The DND feature allows you to set a period of time when your iPhone will stop alerting you of incoming calls, messages and notifications. It doesn't affects the alarms though.

iOS 6

Unfortunately, since last midnight the DND mode won't turn off automatically once the scheduled time comes and continues to silence pretty much everything. If you are in iPhone user, don't panic, your friends didn't forget you (probably), your phone is not alerting. And maybe those friends you have a hard time reaching since last night, are probably victims of the said bug.

windows blue

Windows Blue was reported late 2012, and while the info was sparse, some of it sounded pretty solid. We like the idea of a yearly update cycle for Windows, much like what we see in mobile, and with MacOS and many Linux distros. We like the idea that it could initially be free, and more solidly unify mobile and desktops. And now, there is a rumor that the update could help add support for 7 - 8" tablets, which are sorely lacking in the Windows ecosystem. Windows Blue is rumored to launch during this year 2013 but no launch date yet!

windows blue

Windows 8 and Windows RT has done well to add plenty of 10"+ tablets, hybrids, and transformers to the mobile landscape, but not everyone wants a mobile device that big. As Google, and Amazon have proven, there is a large market for tablets around the 7" and $200 marks.

Windows RT HD2

Remember the HTC HD2 that was launched with Windows mobile 6.5, Well Now a developer hacked the HD2 to install & run the latest ARM version of the Microsoft Windows OS, the Windows RT.

HD2

The hack was performed by developer who goes by the ID @CotullaCode on Twitter. There are zero instructions on how he managed to get this done and how well it works but we do have several screenshots of the operating system in action. It's safe to assume the performance isn't going to be exhilarating but the mere fact that a tablet operating system is running on a three year old smartphone is impressive enough.

Jolla MeeGo OS

Jolla's Meego-based "Sailfish OS" got a New video demo showing us the New UI and deeper look on the its features. The still developing OS got shown off on Nokia N950 developer handset a logical occurrence given the fact that most of the people behind the Sailfish project are ex-Nokia employees.

Making your way around the OS is based on intuitive hand gestures, whose clever implementation allows you one-handed use of the Sailfish device regardless of its screen size. The OS in general is easy to customize starting from the shortcuts on the lockscreen, all the way to the OS's ambiance concept which changes the color of the UI elements once you change your wallpaper.

jolla meego OS

Sailfish OS supports true multitasking, where minimized apps can appear as cards on the homescreen. Each card can be customized by developers to display real-time app info and controls. Check the OS in action on the video below!

NFC

NFC (Near Field Communications) is not yet that popular between smartphone users but its included on all the current mobile devices and tablets in the market. There is no many Applications for the NFC use, but if you've ever dreamed of being able to use your smartphone to unlock or start your car with just a tap... just get a Smartphone with NFC cupport and wait till 2015.

We've already got cars like the Toyota Prius that doesn't need to have a key physically inserted into the car, it just uses RFID to know when the key is inside the car, and allows the car to start only then. But, the tap-and-go option of NFC could be a nice way to make it work as well.

NFC

The new Hyundai Connectivity Concept wants to give you that option. The trouble is that the Hyundai isn't planned for production until 2015. The concept car would also include an inductive charging pad like the Toyota Avalon that we saw recently.

Galaxy S3 mini

Apple withdrew a patent claim against a new Samsung phone with a hi-resolution screen. In a filing with the U.S. Federal Court in San Jose, Apple disclosed that it would not continue the patent claim since the device will not be offered in the U.S. The phone in question could be the Samsung Galaxy S III mini.

Last month, Apple asked the court to add that model, along with some other Samsung phones and tablets, to its seemingly non-stop patent battle against Korean rival Samsung. The latter responded that since the Samsung Galaxy S III mini will not be offered in the U.S., it should not be part of the litigation.

After selling over 150 million units worldwide since it went on sale almost 13 years ago, the old PlayStation 2 legacy is now finally making an exit. According to Famitsu, Sony has stopped shipping the console to retailers in Japan.

The PlayStation 2 went on sale in Japan back on March 4, 2000, and was a tremendous success for the company. The popularity of this console ended up killing Sega's Dreamcast console and even Microsoft's original Xbox and Nintendo's GameCube didn't stand much chance against Sony's juggernaut.
