A report from a Strategy Analytics, shows that Apple and Samsung are the top smartphones vendor in the world in the fourth Quarter of 2014. Surprisingly, Apple and Samsung sold the EXACT same amount of devices in the Q4,2014 which is 74.5 million each.

Samsung apple

For the year as a whole, Samsung remained at the top with total shipments of 317.2 million, which translates into 24.7% share of the market. This compares to 2013, when the company's overall smartphone shipments stood at 319.8 million, giving it a 32.3% market share.

Samsung continues to face intense competition from Apple at the higher-end of the smartphone market, from Huawei in the middle-tiers, and from Xiaomi and others at the entry-level," the report said, adding that the company "may soon have to consider taking over rivals, such as Blackberry, in order to revitalize growth this year.

HTC

HTC continues its winning streak in the 3rd Quarter. HTC's financial report for the Q3,2014 states the company made a profit of $19 million (NT$0.6 billion). Revenue for the period is $1.38 billion (NT$41.9 billion), which is down from $2.17 billion from the previous quarter.

The company is content with how the HTC One M8 held its ground for the period and continued to sell well despite growing competition. The mid-range Desire line-up is also profitable for HTC, but it didn't specify exact shipment figures for any device.

In the last quarter, the HTC One M8 was the main culprit for the company's $92 million profit turnout. HTC is looking up for a similar to Q3 last quarter of the year with a revenue of $1.38 billion - $1.55 billion.

OpenSignal Inc. thrive on smartphone statistics and took the time to plot Android Brand fragmentation. It was a Huge undertaking as the dominant smartphone platform has splintered in many different ways.

First off is that Android devices are made by a myriad of manufacturers. Samsung was by far the biggest with 43% market share and 12 of the 13 most popular devices. Despite the domination, the company's market share has actually slipped, last year it had 47.5% of the market.

Android brand fragmentation 2014

Sony comes in a distant second with 4.8% market share. There's a large number of old Sony devices out there, some dating from the Sony Ericsson days. LG and Motorola also have decently-sized shares. Huawei and Lenovo are doing okay too, keep in mind new Motorolas will soon be counted towards Lenovo's share.

iphone 6

Apple is doing good on the worldwide market shipments. KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has a decent track record on Apple-related industry predictions, has estimated that Apple has sold more than 73 million iPhones in the last quarter (Q4,2014) only which includes about 42 million iPhone 6 and 16 million iPhone 6 Plus sold.

For Q1,2015, Kuo is expecting the figure to be around 61.6 million, up 41.1% year-on-year, but 15.6% less than the previous quarter, something which isn't exactly surprising given the fact that it was a holiday quarter.

As for the iPad, total Q4, 2014 shipments stood at around 21.4 million, down 17.8% year-on-year, but up 73.8% compared to Q3. That number is expected to be around 10 million for the ongoing quarter.

After Samsung launched its Android 6.0 beta program on two of its premier devices from 2015, people were curious whether or not some of the older 2014 models will receive the Marshmallow update. As it turns out, the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge are just the beta platforms for the Company to consolidate its Android 6.0 Marshmallow firmware, but certainly not the only ones who will get the update.

Historically speaking, Samsung always updates its major/flagship devices twice when it comes to big Android version updates. Therefore, the Galaxy S5 for example, should receive Android Marshmallow as its second update is still due. Our previous reports regarding the ongoing work on the Marshmallow firmware for S5 also confirms our educated guess. The Note 4, the Note Edge and the Galaxy S5 LTE-A among others should receive the same sometime in 2016.

Needless to say, the more recent devices launched in 2015 will also get Android 6.0 but the exact time for those updates are not yet clear. Unlike Nexus or Motorola devices, Samsung phones do not necessarily get the fastest updates because the company also needs to customize its own TouchWiz UI on top of the new Android version. The delay might irritate some users, but it is better to get a bug-free, solid version than a faster botched up update in our opinion.

Galaxy S5 Android L Screenshot

Android L official launch date is this Month. You might be wondering when Samsung will update it's latest flagship devices for this year like the Galaxy S5, Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge... well, the latest reports indicates that Samsung will bring the Android L Update to its flagships devices by the end of this year, probably in late December this year.

Samsung, HTC, LG and many Other companies already building their firmwares on the current Android L developer preview image, by the time Google release the official Android L image, these companies will be almost ready to release an OTA update based on the latest Android L image build.

Note 4

Android L update for Samsung devices will bring New TouchWiz UI tweaks, performance enhancements, security improvements and new features too. Samsung Galaxy S5 will get a Note4-like UI with the Android L update, which takes multi-tasking to a whole New level.

Samsung is working hard on bringing Android 5.0 Lollipop to all its devices. We got the (Phase 1) official list of the Samsung devices that will be updated to Lollipop. The list shows many of the latest Samsung devices, some are still under development, some awaiting approval.

According to reports, Samsung Galaxy S5 will get the Lollipop Update during December,2014. Samsung Galaxy S4 (I9500) will get the same update Early,2015 which will be the first Exynos device to get the Lollipop.

S4

The Snapdragon 600 version (I9505) should be getting it sometime later on, the Galaxy S4 Active (I9295) should be getting at the same time since the internals are basically the same. There are also Snapdragon 800 versions - the Galaxy S4 LTE-A (I9506 and some local versions) and the Galaxy S4 Active LTE-A. Those are essentially based on the Galaxy Note 3 with S800 platform (the Note 3 with Exynos uses a different chipset than the I9500).
