fliboard

In the Google Play Store, there is an update for Flipboard that helps prevent accidental page flipping. Additionally, the update also exterminates some bugs that afflicted the app. But more importantly, for those with Android 4.2, it supports the Daydream feature for the OS build.

flipbaord

Daydream is a screensaver that turns on when the phone is charging or docked. Users can choose between seeing the clock, changing colors, photos or headlines from Google Currents. While the latter might sound interesting, it is not interactive which means while headlines appear before your eyes, you cannot touch on one to open a news story. And this is where Flipboard's update comes in.

ubuntu Phone OS

Ubuntu OS for phones was formally announced just last week, and won't be available on the market until early 2014. Test images that have been promised, to allow developers and various other technophiles to play around with the platform, won't be made available until late in February.

Great work is definitely being done on the platform, and it seems that Ubuntu for phones has already gotten a performance update.

ubuntu Phone OS

The video comes from Mika Meskanen, an Ubuntu interaction designer, showing off two devices one running the original build of Ubuntu for phones and the other running the new update. One of the things that we had all noticed from the early hands-on with Ubuntu for phones was that there was some lag and stutters in the UI when scrolling and such. From the new video, it seems those issues have been smoothed out.

android logo

Android's mascot, known as Bugdroid (little green roboto above), has become instantly recognizable in the mobile world and it has already gone several transformations to match the dessert a given Android version is named after.

DandDroid

This loopy-looking robot were created by Dan Morrill, who worked in developer relations, when he decided that slides for a presentation to Google's dev team needed eye candy. These were never used officially, but apparently they lived long enough to pick up a nickname "Dandroids". In the End, Google went with the Bugdroid design by Irina Blo.

J = Jelly Bean

Mr. Morrill isn't done with the Android trivia. The second internal developer launch of Android was called R2-D2, short for "Release To Developers 2". Due to trademark considerations, Android's naming scheme moved on to desserts, which was an idea by Ryan PC Gibson, starting from the letter "C = Cupcake" and moving on in an alphabetically order.

ubuntu

Canonical has announced that an "all-new Ubuntu product" will be released on January,2nd which is just a couple days away, but there has been no word on what the product will be.

ubuntu

Of course, we can make an educated guess based on the known products in development, and since Ubuntu is all open-source, it's kind of hard for there to be a complete surprise release. Our best guess is that this could be the release of Ubuntu for Android.

We will know tomorrow for sure, Stay tuned!

android

The Android distribution statistics for November,2012 have just arrived, Jelly bean and Ice Cream Sandwich showing a good increase.

Version 4.1 Jelly Bean is now on 5.9% of the Android devices from 2.7% last month, while the recently released 4.2 Jelly Bean already powers 0.8% of the droids out tehre. Undoubtedly, the release of the new Nexus devices has to do something with it, but the release of JB updates from Samsung and HTC has also helped a bit.

Android

Surely, the growth of both Jelly Bean and Ice Cream Sandwich is at Gingerbread's expense. It's still taking the largest piece of the pie at 50.6%, but that's 3.3 percent points lower than last month and 5.2 percent points lower than it was in September.

Facebook Android

These posters you see above is from Facebook's Menlo Park campus as Facebook is telling its employees to switch to Android and leave their iPhones (which the company have given them). The reason behind this was they knew that the Android version of their app sucks and that they wanted their employees to teest their app and report back on what's wrong with it.

Facebook Android poster

Facebook employees get to try the latest and greatest versions of the apps before everyone else. Their version also has a feature called "Rage Shake", where the user just shakes their phone when they come across an issue and it gets reported automatically.

However, with most of the employees at Facebook using iPhones, they weren't getting enough data on the Android app to know what's wrong with it, so this initiative for asking the employees to switch is a step to correct that problem.

Ubuntu

Ubuntu on Android is a concept Ubuntu is trying to sell to Android phone makers, enterprise-level customers, and peripheral manufacturers. You can see Ubuntu's pitch and explanation of features and specifications on their site. The idea is that a full, slightly modified installation of the Ubuntu desktop is stashed on the storage of a multi-core Android phone. Whenever that phone is set in a dock and connected to a monitor, that Ubuntu installation comes to life and runs. The Android phone becomes just a very small computer, and the owner gets the full desktop experience of keyboard, mouse, and big screen.

Ubuntu

The snappiness and space depend on each phone, of course, but with most major new Android smartphones arriving with at least dual cores and at least 32 GB of space available to users, Ubuntu is a feasible option. Watch the demonstration video, and you'll see that browsers open fairly quickly, and app switching is fairly fast. This has something to do with the solid-state nature of Android storage,  and the lightweight nature of Ubnutu. There are definitely delays, especially when switching from Android to Ubuntu and back again from dock plugging, but it's early-stage software that can hopefully be optimized.

With over 20 million users, Ubuntu is the world's favourite free operating system and Ubuntu for Android is the first complete solution for office productivity on a phone. It lets Android and Ubuntu share the same Linux kernel, so they can run at the same time Android for the phone experience and Ubuntu when docked. Which means one address book, one set of bookmarks, one place for text messages and one inbox for mail. And thanks to careful integration between the Ubuntu desktop and Android, user's have access to the phone's functions when it's docked including making and receiving calls.

ubuntu

This isn't Ubuntu for Android, or a hacked together demo made by an enthusiast, this is Real Official version of Ubuntu running on a Google Nexus 7 tablet and being shown off by an official Canonical engineer.

Canonical founder, Mark Shuttlesworth, has said that beginning with Ubuntu 13.04, which is due in April 2013, the team will be focusing on "mobile metrics" like battery life and memory consumption, which will lead to the OS being able to run on a much wider range of Android & mobile devices.

Ubuntu

The Unity UI is already a solid step towards being touchscreen friendly, so now it is just a matter of optimizing the OS for touchscreen devices. The start of that work looks to be right around the corner as Shuttlesworth told developers attending the Ubuntu Developer Summit (UDS) in Copenhagen Denmark next week to bring their Nexus 7s, because Google's tablet is apparently a great "reference" device for the project.

App store

Claiming that the term "App Store" has become a generic title, lawyers for Amazon are asking a judge to toss Apple's lawsuit against the online retailer for calling its applications store the Amazon Appstore.

"Apple presumably does not contend that its past and current CEOs made false statements regarding to those other app stores to thousands of investors in earnings calls. To the contrary, the use of the term 'app store' to refer to stores selling apps is commonplace in the industry." - Amazon

Amazon attorneys noted in a filing that even Apple's last two CEOs (the late Steve Jobs and Tim Cook) had used the app store phrase generically when talking about what was then called the Android Market. Apple holds a trademark on the App Store name and originally filed the suit in March 2011.

Oppo find 5 1080p

Oppo, the Chinese company, is not very popular around the world, but it made it into the headlines recently by unveiling the Oppo Finder, the thinnest smartphone available. Now, Oppo has an even more amazing device coming this year "Oppo Find 5" which is a 5-inch smartphone that might well become the first Android smartphone with a 1080p screen (1920 x 1080 resolution).

Oppo find 5 1080p

Oppo Find 5 has a pixel density of 441ppi, this blows all competition out of the water, even in comparison with screens like the "Retina" on the iPhone 4S. At 441ppi, the pixel density is a lot more detailed than the 326ppi iPhone display.

The Oppo Find 5 is also said to be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro chip with a Quad-core Krait processor. Powered by Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. The device has no Price or Release date yet but it said to be coming during this year.

faceunlock

This is one of those patents that we were pretty curious about, because the timeline of the story was quite interesting. Google announced Face Unlock as part of Ice Cream Sandwich last year. A little bit after that we found out that Apple had applied for a patent for what seemed to be the very same thing back in 2010. Of course, Google's Face Unlock was based on technology from PittPatt, which had a patent granted in 2007. Google's newly granted patent was submitted for approval in late 2011, just before the ICS announcement.

Google's new patent details the same mechanism as Apple's for recognizing various facial features, but seems to go well beyond that into a number of methods for logging in to a computer with the facial recognition. Additionally, where Apple's filing was specifically for iOS devices, Google's new patent covers any device with a camera, including smartphones, tablets, laptops, desktops, etc., which means Apple can't use this feature without a licence from Google patent or it will be an infringement.

According to Google, Smart App Updates are only a third in size, the Play Store will only download whatever is New/Changed within the APK instead of downloading the entire app all over again. which means you save a lot of time and data in updating apps. This feature has now been activated on the Google Play Store and some apps are already making use of it.

OUYA didn't waste any time getting its Console up for pre-order. However, you'll have to wait until April,2013 to get your device delivered to you.

The pricing isn't as bad as one would imagine for a project that scored one of the most successful Kickstarter funding of all time. The pre-order price for a console coming with one controller is $99. If you want two controllers its $129, and $189 for four controllers. Sounds like a pretty sweet deal to me.

Galaxy Nexus 2

First thing I would like to address the poeple who like to comment on everything New by typing "FAKE!"... This photo is just a concept and NOT REAL device.

This Galaxy Nexus 2 concept was designed by Killu-Chan, and shows a Samsung-made Nexus phone that would feature a 5" display at 720p resolution covered in Gorilla Glass 2. Inside, the concept calls for 32GB of storage, 42Mbps HSPA+, Bluetooth 4.0, microUSB 2.0 with MHL and USB on the go. The ridiculous part is that the concept also suggest an 8GB of RAM, which is impossible because if that's really an expected feature of the designer, we may just have to throw out the entire idea. Rounding out the internals would be a 2GHz quad-core Tegra 3+ and a 3200 mAh battery.

As far as cameras, there would be a 2MP front-facing camera, and a 12MP rear camera. Also on the back would be an LED flash, and in addition to the current set of camera features, the designer is calling for simultaneous HD video and image recording.

Android piracy

The problem with "Android App Piracy" seems to be escalating lately, with more and more developers expressing their negative opinion towards the platform's little to no protection against this problem.

App piracy on Android is nothing new. The percentage of pirated apps versus bought ones has always been higher on Android than on iOS, and developers have not once brought this issue to the public's attention.

apk

The solution to all this seems quite simple to us get rid of the option that allows you to install apps from sources other than the Google Play store. Of course, Android is open and tech-savvy people will quickly find a workaround for that, but in case Google tries hard to make this workaround complicated enough, the vast majority of users will never bother to implement the workaround. As a result, people will just stick to getting their apps from the Play Store. Still, Google is yet to make this move, and there are no indications that it's going to happen anytime soon.

We are aware that such a transition will be hard at first, and probably many hardcore Android users will be pissed off, but the question is, should Google bother about those users? Google has always tried to be good to its customers, to not be evil, but now this kind of generosity is going against its own ecosystem. Developers are getting hurt financially, and are finding it increasingly hard to stay afloat due to this whole "open", and "don't be evil" mantra. Google will not become evil, if it closes that part of Android that makes piracy so easy. As a matter of fact, it should feel obliged to do so, because these devs are the same devs that made Android a worthwhile experience.

Nielsen, a popular analyst company, has published its report on the US smartphone market in the second quarter of 2012. The quarter saw smartphone growth continue as two thirds of all new customers picked a smartphone.

Android continues to be in lead, Android is powering 51.8% of all US smartphones and 54.6% of the devices purchased over the past three months. And that was the quarter before the Samsung Galaxy S III was launched.

US Total Smartphones 2012

Apple's iOS platform users is decreasing, with Apple's OS accounting for 34.3% of US smartphones and 36.3% of the newly acquired ones. Expectedly iOS is starting to lose pace in the third quarter of iPhone 4S availability.

amazon phone

Amazon is said to be developing its own smartphone, which will compete against the iPhone and the Android smartphones, says Bloomberg. The world's largest online retailer is said to have partnered with Foxconn to manufacture the handset for it.

There are no other details available at the moment but if Amazon plans to compete with iPhone their phone has to be high-end, unlike the Kindle Fire, which was a budget offering. We don't know what software it would be running but it's fair to assume it would be a heavily customized version of Android such as the one on the Kindle Fire.

Considering Amazon has its own application store, along with books, music, movies and loads of other stuff, it really doesn't matter if it doesn't allow access to the Google Play Store.

SM10

With the release of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, CyanogenMod had provides some details about when they will be releasing an update to CyanogenMod. CyanogenMod team has taken to Google+ and although they did not provide an ETA for the update, they did provide a few details about the update itself.

CM10

The next update, as you may have guessed, will be called CM10, keeping with the tradition of giving the update the same number as the position of the alphabet of the Android version is named after (Jelly Bean). Here is the Official Announcement:

"...On Jelly Bean

Unless you have been internet deprived lately, you are aware that Android 4.1 aka Jelly Bean (JB) is due out in the coming weeks. Which inevitably leads to the question: How does this affect me CyanogenMod?

Now, to preface this, we do not have our hands on the source code, and things in this post may change dependent on analysis of the code first hand and the impacts. That said, we do have a general understanding of the changes and what we can expect, and this post serves to highlight the key changes.

CyanogenMod Next

Many have asked whether JB will be CM9.1 or CM10. Keeping with the pattern thus far, every newly named AOSP update results in a bump to the CM major version. This has the added benefit of fitting into the pattern of [insert codename position in the english alphabet] = CM version. Examples being: G is the 7th letter thus CM7, I is the 9th letter thus CM9 and J = 10.

I can't believe its not Butter

The ‘Project Butter' enhancements to Android are much anticipated and should not be a huge pain to merge. We anticipate some breakage in existing libs but nothing that the reference board devices or some hackery won't overcome. Essentially, if your device met our criteria for CM9 (512mb RAM, etc) and is already supported, then you should be in line for CM10. There may be some added headaches around hwcomposer, but we'll cross that bridge when we get source.

ETA?

When it's ready... "

We already know that Google is working on a Siri-like personal assistance to integrate it on Android. Today, Wall Street Journal about the smartphone ecosystem mentions that according to people on the inside, Google is accelerating the development of a Siri-like virtual, interactive personal assistant for Android users.

While whatever Google produces will naturally bring comparisons to Siri, Google has higher aspirations. There has been some speculation that the finished design would make Google's virtual assistant much more powerful with more capabilities than Siri.

Google has updated the Android distribution figures on its developer website. The Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich user base has grown to 7.1%, up from the 2.9% back on April,2012.

The sharp growth is likely due to the launch of new Android 4.0 devices such as the HTC One series phones, as well as several high-end devices receiving the Android 4.0 update. With even more Android 4.0 devices on their way and more updates planned for current devices, this number will continue to rise.

Google's purchase of Motorola Mobility has been approved by Europe and was was pending chinese approval. Today, A Google spokesman has confirmed that Chinese regulators gave the okay for the purchase on Saturday, and the formal approval should be coming this week.

According to reports, there is one major stipulation given by the Chinese regulators which says that approval is based on the promise that Google will keep Android open and freely available to anyone who wants to use it for the next 5 years. So, for anyone who still harbored some crazy idea that this move would lead to the closing of Android, that is now impossible... for 5 years.

This Device (MK802) may look like an ordinary USB stick, but it is a fully-functional computer. Of course, you need to attach it to a display, and connect some sort of keyboard/mouse combo, but the MK802 could very well be the smallest PC around. This computer is powered by Android 4.0 ICS and you can attach any mouse or keyboard to use on the linux-powered Google Operating system.

There are, of course, some trade-offs involved here. The MK802 is from an unspecified manufacturer, and has a single core 1.5Ghz processor. Also, the HDMI is a connector, rather than a socket, so you will need to use a cable rather than just stick it into the back of a TV.

It doesn't seem to be a commercial for the Galaxy Nexus itself because the Samsung branding was blacked out on the phone (as you can see on the photo above) OR the Nexus could be Clooney's own personal phone.

Android C#

As we all know with the Android law-suits with Oracle vs Google on the whole Java issue, some clever people thought that instead, just port all of the Android code automatically to C#. And, they are getting there!

Basically, they take the Android AOSP code then pull it through a tool they have helped develop called "Sharpen" which translates Java code to C# and the results are amazing. While only some of the Android code is physically working without Java at all, it is a great start and hopefully seeing this on low-end devices can speed things up a little.

Android Mono VM C#

A little more on the technical side, the way Android runs Java through the Dalvik virtual machine is fairly efficient, but using Java limits you severely by it's design and complexity, slowing down execution everywhere. While Android appears to do a fairly good job, it does not do it as well as it could do with Oracle efforts.

Here is a graph from the project showing performance:

Graph

As you can see, clearly using the C# is faster. However, there is still a while to go which if you want to have a look or even help out check out the link in the source for more technical information.

Android Updates are very slow in releasing especially the latest update to Ice Cream Sandwhich, The technical lead developer on the Android Open Source Project, Jean-Baptiste Queru, posts a post on Google+ saying that he believes the slow update rate many Android users have had to endure is very reasonable. He said on his Google+ post:

"This is actually a very reasonable time, since under the hood Ice Cream Sandwich is quite different from Honeycomb (and upgrades from Gingerbread are likely to take longer as those differences are huge),"

He Also added:

"...some variants of the Google-engineered flagship devices still haven't received Ice Cream Sandwich (or are stuck with older versions of Ice Cream Sandwich) because of delays introduced by operator approvals."

Xolo X900

Intel CEO Paul Otellini announced during a financial earnings call that the company's first Atom based smartphone will go on sale "later this week".

This is not really a surprise because the Indian company Lava, with whom Intel partnered to make Atom based Android phones, has already announced their intentions to launch the Xolo X900 tomorrow, April 19, in India.

Intel Atom

The X900 has a 4-inch display with 1024 x 600 resolution with proximately 295 PPI, 8-megapixel camera with flash, 10fps burst mode and 1080p video recording, 1.3 megapixel front camera, 1GB RAM, 16GB internal storage space, HSPA+ connectivity up to 21Mbps, HDMI out and NFC built-in. The device will launch with Android Gingerbread 2.3.7 and will be Upgraded to 4.0.3 in the near future.

X900

The Xolo X900 will use Intel Atom Z2460 processor that has a single-core 1.6GHz Saltwell CPU with Hyper-Threading, PowerVR SGX540 GPU clocked at 400MHz and 32-bit Dual channel LPDDR2 memory. This processor, however, is based on Intel x86 architecture that differs from the one that ARM uses on almost every other SoC on the market, which means application compatibility is going to be an issue initially.

Google CEO Larry Page made a statement regarding the Android Google State in 2012 bringing us the latest statistics, Page puts it plainly Android is on fire, and activating over 850,000 devices each day.

"Android is on fire, and the pace of mobile innovation has never been greater. Over 850,000 devices are activated daily through a network of 55 manufacturers and more than 300 carriers. Android is a tremendous example of the power of partnership, and it just gets better with each version. The latest update, Ice Cream Sandwich, has a beautiful interface that adapts to the form of the device. Whether it is on a phone or tablet, the software works seamlessly." L. Page, Google CEO

This number was about 500,000 last year (2011), this huge increase on the number of daily activated handsets is very impressive in our opinion.

ICS

Android ICS 4.0.3 released first on the Galaxy Nexus, All manufactures promise to update their latest phones from Gingerbread to ICS. Now, most major phone manufacturers including Asus, Samsung and Sony have finished the testing and certification and are ready to update device to ICS very soon.

Phone makers have not yet updated their devices to the latest Android despite the fact that the 4.0.x version was released in November of last year. That is nearly a five month gap in which Gingerbread continues to be the dominant Android version on high-end handsets on the platform.

And if the rumors are true, Android 5.0 JB should make fragmentation even worse as the publication expects the new version to arrive as early as May or June. Internally, this is allegedly slowing down phone manufacturers with ICS updates as they try to prepare for 5.0.

Samsung has already pushed an ICS update for its Galaxy S II, and next in line are the Galaxy Tab 8.9, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Galaxy Note. Asus has also updated its original Transformer, and Sony recently announced plans to bump up the Android versions of the Tablet P and Tablet S by end-April.

There are two main improvements to the app: under the My Apps menu, you can see Installed and All Apps in a separate tab. This allows you to re-download any app you've previously tried and deleted, or paid for and uninstalled, bringing the functionality more in line with the desktop portal. There is still no option to manually re-install all, or a select portion, of your apps, which would go a long way to building in the same functionality for non-root users as Titanium Backup does for root users.

Android Market

Before, Google limited the Android Market applications (.apk) size to 50MB, and developers have had to make smaller apks and the user will download the expansion files after installing the APK, Well Google changed this today by increasing the Market App size Up to 4GB. The new maximum application size of 4GB does not necessarily mean the size of the APK will be increased... but rather the Android Market will host the application expansion files. This will help the Google keep a closer eye on when a user completely finishes the download of a large application to properly start the refund period.

Most of us have experienced a long in-game download like Gameloft Asphalt 6, and then realized the refund period has already passed. In the Android Market, these expansion files are added to the 50MB size of your application so users know how much space the app will really take from his Phone Memory after full Installation.

Acer CloudMobile

The Acer CloudMobile was recently shown off at an event in Milan, Italy to the press. We found a Hands-on video on Youtube but Sadly its not in English!

The Acer CloudMobile is easily the most interesting phone to have come out of Acer. In fact, it won an iF design award even before it was officially launched. But it is not just the design that is great about it. The CloudMobile also comes loaded with some pretty great features.

Acer CloudMobile

Acer Cloud Mobile specs Starts with an Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box, which instantly earns it major brownie points. Next it has a 4.3-inch, 720p display with on-screen virtual controls, just like on the Galaxy Nexus. The device in the video above also has a separate row of capacitive keys below the display but that can be excused since it is a prototype device. The device shown in the press images does not have these extra keys.

KMC

Android had pretty tasty Names from the begins: Alpha, Beta, Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich... and Now Jelly Bean. They all alphabetically organized with a name of a tasty-sweet inside. After announcing that the Android 5.0 Jelly Bean (JB) is coming in Q2, 2012... We start thinking about the Future version of Android 6.0 Name!

Rumors suggest that the Upcoming Name for the Android 6.0 will be "Kendal Mint Cake" (KMC) which begins with a "K" and its a 3 parts name like the Ice cream sandwich and its a sweet ofcourse. So this is the Most likely Name for the Android 6.0 which might be released by Early 2014.
